When 16-year-old Dylan Lawrence was diagnosed with a diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma, the deadliest childhood brain tumor, he said, “I don't want my life to be pointless.” I was planning on interviewing Dylan for this podcast, but unfortunately he got too sick and died several weeks after our scheduled interview. But I still wanted to somehow capture who Dylan was. So Dylan's “bonus mom” Susan Lawrence and I decided that we would carry his voice after his death through hers. In this episode, you're going to hear a lot about who Dylan was as person, how Susan and Dylan talked about his terminal illness, and about how even in the midst of darkness, Susan was able to feel gratitude. Susan also talks in detail about Dylan's death, and about the trauma of witnessing Dylan's struggle to die. This episode is heavy at times, but if you're up for it, you can help hold a space for the unimaginable: losing a child. In this episode Mark talks about one of his favourite films: the 1988 American fantasy comedy-drama "Big" directed by Penny Marshall. The story of the film follows 12 year-old Josh Baskin (played by David Moscow), from Cliffside, New Jersey, who one night - while at a fun fare with his Mom, Dad, and little sister Rachel - encounters an antique arcade fortune teller machine called "Zoltar" and who makes a wish to it for him to be "big" and then overnight grows into becoming an adult version of himself (played by Tom Hanks). When the fun fare moves on, taking the mysterious "Zoltar" fortune teller machine with it, Josh is forced to flee his family home to temporarily live in New York City while they attempt to find out where the "Zoltar" fortune teller machine is so that he can be turned back into a kid again. Josh is assisted by his best friend, Billy Kopecki (played by Jared Rushton), who immediately helps him with money, with finding a rundown apartment in New York City, and with finding a job to survive the six weeks that it will take to find out where the "Zoltar" machine will be next - which leads Josh to innitially take a job as a computer operator at MacMillan Toy Company, before he is recognised by the company's owner, Mr. MacMillan (played Robert Loggia), as having an insight into what toys children like and why, and is subsequently given a promotion to becoming vice president in charge of project development at FAO Schwartz. As Josh's reputation in the toy company grows he begins to attract the attention of a rival at the company, Paul Davenport (played by John Heard), who is jealous of Josh's rapid rise and also of all the attention now being put on Josh. Josh also starts to attract the attention and the affection of Susan Lawrence (played by Elizabeth Perkins), who over the course of the film starts to feel a youthful exuberance because of her interactions with Josh, and who starts to fall in love with Josh - but who has no idea who Josh really is, nor how old he really is. The iconic soundtrack to the film was composed by the great Howard Shore. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/markthepoet/message

When you were 12, did you ever wish you were bigger? And did you also ever wish to make your mom think you got kidnapped and that a 30-something brash woman with smoker's breath would have sex with you while also pretending to be your new mommy? If so, then the 1988 Penny Marshall movie "Big" starring Tom Hanks is right up your alley. Sure, the sickly sweet score, oversized piano dancing, cushy job at a toy company, and silly-string fights make this film feel like a light-hearted age-swap romp, but when you actually look at what this movie is about, it feels more like a horror movie. Hanks plays Josh Baskin, a kid who made a wish on a racist fortune teller machine and then aged about 20 years overnight. He's obsessed with little kid toys even though he's weeks away from turning 13, and he doesn't seem to mind pretending to be his own kidnapper to his distraught mother faster than he can say, "I'm technically getting molested by my co-worker!" Elizabeth Perkins plays Susan Lawrence, Josh's said jaded, workaholic, man-eating, 30-something co-worker who falls for a man with the mind of a 12-year-old boy and doesn't seem all that fazed when she finds out he actually is 12 years old.  Robert Loggia plays Mr. MacMillan, the aloof owner of the toy company Josh quickly climbs the ladder of, whose entire character is to pretend that every innocent and dumb thing that comes out of Josh's mouth is somehow insightful and refreshing even when they're not. To round out the cast, we have John Heard (the dad from "Home Alone") as Hank's one-sided rival, Mercedes Ruehl as Josh's super sad mother, and Jared Rushton (one of the shrunken kids in "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids") as Josh's wily best friend, Billy Kopecki.  Join us discuss all the 26 minutes of weird scenes that were added to the "extended cut" of this movie, wonder why the police don't seem to care much that the young Josh is missing, and question how Tom Hanks' version of Josh is able to get a bank account and rent an expensive apartment without even knowing his own social security number.  Tell us what you think by chatting with us (@filmsnuff) on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, or by shooting us an email over at mailbag@filmsnuff.com. Dr Jane Hamlett Department of History, Royal Holloway, University of London) Dr Alastair Owens (School of Geography, Queen Mary University of London) Abstracts Dr Jane Hamlett Institutional Things: Material Culture and Patient Experience at Bethlem, 1870-1910 This paper draws on research for the ESRC At Home in the Institution Project -- a cross-institutional study of space and material culture in lunatic asylums (as they were known to contemporaries), schools and lodging houses in Victorian and Edwardian England. Built en masse in the nineteenth century, institutions created new material worlds that their inmates had to try and negotiate. The paper will examine interior decoration, furnishing and provision of goods within asylums. Taking Bethlem Hospital, then based in Lambeth, as a case study, I will explore the efforts made to domesticate this establishment through home-like décor. However, the main focus will be patients' responses to and engagement with material culture. The paper will draw on a unique collection of hundreds of letters preserved in Bethlem's case books, which offer an unparalleled record of inmates' reactions to their environments and the things they thought were most important. In a highly controlled material world, small goods, the portable and peripheral, became vital to patients as they attempted to maintain identity and agency within institutional walls. Dr Alastair Owens People and things on the move: domestic material culture, poverty and mobility in Victorian London The development of what Alan Mayne and Susan Lawrence (1999) termed ‘ethnographic’ approaches to studying nineteenth-century households and urban communities has gathered momentum in recent years. Building on critiques of such approaches, this paper examines the material culture of poor households in Victorian London. Drawing upon a study of Victorian archaeological remains excavated from a site in Limehouse in London’s East End, and inspired by the theoretical insights provided by the ‘new mobilities paradigm’, it aims to place ‘mobility’ as a central and enabling intellectual framework for understanding the relationships between people, place and poverty. While historians and archaeologists have tended to regard mobility as an obstacle to understanding the lives of the poor, here I want to show how by examining the temporal routines and geographical movements of people and things across a variety of time frames and spatial scales, we can perhaps better grasp the struggles and uncertainties of life in Victorian London’s most socially deprived communities. I conclude that as historians of material culture, we need to be more open to the restlessness and dynamism of people and objects.
