Hey there, and welcome to a special milestone—the 300th episode of the Retroist Podcast! Today, I'm diving into the world of one of the most iconic console games of its time—The Legend of Zelda. If you were a gamer in the '80s, you'd know exactly what I'm talking about! Before we embark on this journey through Hyrule, let me take you back to my own memories of receiving and playing The Legend of Zelda. I remember the excitement and wonder as I unwrapped the game, knowing it was something special. From the moment I popped that golden cartridge into my NES, I was hooked. The vast scope and intricate design of the game changed my gaming expectations forever. Now, let's get into the nitty-gritty of this gaming masterpiece. The game was developed by Nintendo, a company that has left an indelible mark on the gaming world. The Legend of Zelda first appeared on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)—a console that holds a special place in the hearts of gamers from that era. But what made this game truly exceptional were the brilliant minds behind it. From the visionary creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, to the talented designer, Takashi Tezuka, and the composer, Koji Kondo, every aspect of The Legend of Zelda was infused with passion and creativity. As for the game itself, it was unlike anything gamers had experienced before. Players took on the role of the brave hero, Link, as he embarked on a quest to rescue Princess Zelda from the clutches of the evil Ganon. Exploring the vast world of Hyrule, solving puzzles, battling enemies, and uncovering secrets—The Legend of Zelda was an epic adventure. But it wasn't just about the gameplay; it was the rich mythology and lore that captured our imaginations. The Triforce, the Master Sword, the land of Hyrule—these became iconic elements of the gaming world. The Legend of Zelda was also a technological marvel for its time. The game featured a battery-backed save system, allowing players to continue their adventure right where they left off—an innovation that set it apart from other games. Its success led to a series of beloved sequels, each building upon the legacy of the original game. From The Adventure of Link to A Link to the Past and beyond, The Legend of Zelda franchise continued to captivate players with its deep storytelling and immersive gameplay. And we can't forget the iconic music. Koji Kondo's masterful compositions, such as the main theme and the catchy overworld tune, became instant classics and are still celebrated to this day. But despite my love for The Legend of Zelda, I found it incredibly challenging to do justice to such an influential game in my previous podcast attempts. It's hard to put into words just how much this game means to me and countless gamers around the world. I hope this latest effort brings a fresh perspective to the game and reignites your love for this gaming gem. So, let's dust off our swords and shields, don our green tunics, and journey once more into the fantastical world of Hyrule. The Legend of Zelda awaits, and I'm thrilled to share this adventure with you all.

Two of the most powerfully entertaining brands in gaming and entertainment are joining forces and the outcome is absolutely mind-blowing as it merges virtual play with physical play. The LEGO Group and Nintendo have announced that they have an exciting new product called LEGO® Super Mario™ which is currently in the preorder phase. The new product line features an interactive LEGO Mario figure that collects coins in real-life game levels that you can create through lego bricks. So it’s kind of not a video game or a traditional LEGO playset. It’s more of a hybrid that will change the way people interact with these characters. The series will begin with an entry point set called “Adventures with Mario Starter Course”. This will feature seven action bricks with various interactions and a LEGO Mario figure, Bowser and Goomba. There are 231 pieces in the pack, but you’ll be able to add more with expansion sets to further grow your collection and see even more variety in the way you play with your creations. The LEGO Mario figure is unique also as it has LCD screens in his eyes, mouth, and chest to display a variety of instant reactions to movement, colour and action bricks. The set also has a speaker that plays the iconic Super Mario sounds and music from the video game series. “Super Mario has continued to appear, always in a form adapted to the current hardware of the time.” said Takashi Tezuka, Executive Officer and Game Producer of Nintendo Co., Ltd. “I am thankful that in this project with the LEGO Group, Mario is jumping out of the digital world of game consoles and smart devices, and we are able to bring him into the world with a new, physical type of Mario play. It's very exciting to think of LEGO Mario becoming a real friend to children and to picture them playing in their very own Mario world that they imagined themselves.” If you have children aged 6+ this will be great for them to build levels and learn to play in their own unique style. Make sure you grab the free LEGO® Super Mario™ app as well, that has building instructions, inspiration & other fun ways to use your pack creatively.  The full LEGO® Super Mario™ assortment will launch on August 1 2020. The idea is to pre-order now though so you don’t miss out on the initial batch.  The Starter course in Australia will retail for around $89.99 while the expansions will come in at around $49.99 for the Piranha Plant Power Expansion Set and @149.99 for the big “Bowser’s Castle Boss Battle Expansion Set” While traditional play with either of these two massive brands is still unmatched it’s truly something special to see when giants like this team up to give a truly unique style of play while still sticking to the brand fundamentals that make them great individually.  More gaming online www.random30.com.au or subscribe to our channel

Hello my beautiful Mario and Luigi makers! Super Mario Maker 2 is out this week so let’s chat! Takashi Tezuka has given us some pearls of info to muse on. Galen and Oni have a running argument on autorunner levels. The gang also discusses what Nintendo does with the future of Mario 2D side-scroller platformers as stand alone titles. Oni thinks they need to go a totally new direction, and he has THE BEST ideas. Nintendo, please check these out. They’re free. Oni and Galen have basically acted as creative producer on this and workshopped ‘em. Oni and Galen then blab on about some new info on an upgraded Switch model, and consider things not only from a consumer standpoint, but from a developer’s burden point of view, as well. We muse on the big questions like, “Is the inevitable Switch model going to be a small bump or a huge leap so it can at least hold its own against the PS5 and Xbox Scarlett?” Galen brings up marketing and aiming at different markets, while Oni fights back with discussions of the slippery slope effect that the Switch could lose 3rd party support.
