"How does your cluttered desk serve you?" I was asked this question recently by one of my coaches, Karen Chappell.(Look her up if you want to live a pain-free life...she is a-MAZ-ing!)I was talking with Karen about minimalism after re-watching a Netflix documentary called "Minimalism: Less is Now" based on the book "The Minimalists" by Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus. The idea of living a more intentional life with less useless clutter (in my house, in my head, in my technology) appeals to me very much.I was telling Karen that I have a lot of clutter and it does weigh on me. So she asked me, "How does your cluttered desk serve you?"Because we don't do things over and over again without there being some payoff for us--even for things that maybe aren't healthy or in our best interests.I did have some thoughts on that. Check out the latest episode of Cafe Grit (048, info below) and find out how my cluttered desk serves me. PS: My desk is no longer cluttered and in the podcast I reveal how it got all cleaned up, with Karen's help!

A few years ago, one of my co-workers wanted to work remotely for the winter. They received permission and spent 3 or 4 months in France, waking up early to work for an hour or two, skiing in the late morning and early afternoon, and then coming back to work more at night. I was quite jealous. Mostly because with family, this wasn't an option for me. Don't feel too bad for me as I get the chance to slide down mountains plenty during the winter. In this article on flexible working plans, number four makes a good point. What work is suited for live, in-person interaction? Which aspects of your job benefit from seeing others face-to-face? Today I'm asking data professionals to think about it. I know we can do all our jobs remotely, after all, many of us have been doing that for at least a couple of years, and some for far longer. I can't remember the last time I actually needed to look at a physical server I wrote code for? Probably when I self-hosted SQL Server Central back in 2002-2003 and went to reboot a machine or add a disk drive. Even then, those weren't DBA or developer jobs, but really Operations hardware tasks. Read the rest of Which Work Is Suited for In-Person?

The future of how we will work is uncertain. Every time I read something or talk to someone, I hear different thoughts and experiences, which influence how I feel. Actually, I'm not sure how I feel. Some companies are pushing back their office openings (Google, Microsoft) to a future time, while others are bringing people back part or full time. I had lunch with some friends working at a financial institution, and they are allowed to work at home a day or two a week, but otherwise, they're in the office every week. I know some other people that are back in the office five days a week. There are mixed feelings among many people. While I don't know many technology people that want to be in the office every day, some do want the option to go periodically to the office. Depending on your commute, you might feel differently, as there are plenty of data pros that want to remain at home full time. Both groups, however, feel that we can be effective at our jobs while working remotely. Read the rest of Poor Work Management

My middle kid is about to graduate from college and is starting to look for a job. I suspect he won't have too much trouble, as an aeronautical engineer near the top of his class, but I do think that it's going to be more challenging to find employment than it was two years ago. Though likely better than last year. While my employer has continued to hire people throughout the last year, we definitely know it's been a challenge for some of them to get up to speed, build relationships, and get productive. It's likely easier for technical people, especially for those with experience, but not necessarily easy for those just getting their careers going. Read the rest of Getting Started Remotely

Google is aiming for Sept 1 and requires you to request remote work for more than 14 days a year. A few other friends are starting to go back 1-2 days a week at their companies, with the idea that this may increase over time. Redgate has still extended full time remote to the end of 2021, and I have no idea what things will look like after that. I'm curious, and anxious, as I want to go back to the office. Like mentioned in this piece, I am missing others, along with the interactions and the chance meetings. Grant wrote about things we miss recently, and that was my response. Microsoft was one of the companies that dramatically pivoted to remote work. They enhanced their Teams product in a number of ways to help themselves, and their customers collaborate when people are not located in the same physical space. They also started to study the way in which people worked. I wrote about this last year, and they continue to study how work has changed, even though they are allowing workers back into offices. There is a new article that talks about the differences between workers and managers. Managers think they are thriving, and workers are not. There may be many reasons for this, but I suspect one of these is the privilege of space. Many managers and senior workers likely have bigger residences, and can spread out. They can change their locations and experience a new environment. Since so many of them might get by with less powerful laptops, and often work on a single item at a time, it's easy to move from the kitchen to a dedicated office, to a bedroom, or even out on a deck.   Read the rest of Finding a Break

Most discussions concerning the COVID-19 global pandemic aspire to a path leading to some form of normalcy – a “new normal.” That pathway is often framed in terms of phases, with each phase leading to an equilibrium of sorts. In other words, the state of equilibrium will be defined differently with each phase. There is no roadmap for what is about to happen soon or next, but each iteration requiring a search for equilibrium results from changes in market and individual behavior, as well as adjustments in business processes to address those changes. That is why resiliency is the North Star that will guide the most successful companies forward.Protiviti has published a two-part series on finding equilibrium in uncertain times. In other words, the state of equilibrium will be defined differently with each phase. No one really knows how this transition is going to work, since there is no playbook for recovery from a pandemic that literally shuts down whole economies.
