Houston Athletic Director Eddie Nuñez joins HEA for a conversation on how he is operating Houston athletics two years into his tenure. Nuñez discusses his working relationship with Chancellor Renu Khator and explains why he intentionally sought out presidents earlier in his career to better understand higher education leadership (and why future ADs should do that today). I asked Nuñez how ADs are blocking out the noise of so much commentary and industry news but still making sure they stay informed. He also responds to my curiosity on which would make fans more happy, Houston's pursuit of a national championship in men's basketball, or the football program making the College Football Playoff. The conversation also explores Nuñez's thoughts on what job descriptions and verticals he needed to make to fit their vision and approach to chase revenue. We also discussed the realities of competing in the state of Texas, both on the field and in the increasingly competitive business environment that now defines modern college sports.0:00 Introduction0:30 The Modern AD Preview4:25 Thoughts on Ryan Berryman and Jalen Dominguez at New Mexico11:05 Working with Long-Time Chancellor Renu Khator in this Era13:15 How The AD Job is Similar to College Presidents17:50 Blocking Out Industry Distractions and Extracting Good Information20:50 Isomorphism in Higher Education and College Athletics23:30 Competing Against Texas in Sports, Attention and Business 25:11 Men's Basketball National Championship or College Football Playoff Win?29:25 Reconfiguration of Job Descriptions for Revenue Generation Strategy33:48 Advice for Traditional Administrators to Stay the Course but LEARN Outside Comfort ZoneRead the first edition of The Modern AD: https://higheredathletics.com/AD Vantage empowers athletic directors with comprehensive staff data, performance analytics, and AI-powered candidate insights to make smarter hiring, compensation, and retention decisions in an era where every dollar counts. This episode with Zsuzsanna Szelényi explores Hungary's dramatic political transformation following the end of Viktor Orbán's 16-year rule, examining how an entrenched illiberal system was dismantled through democratic means and what this reveals about the resilience of liberal democracy in Europe. The conversation traces the structural factors that converged to break Orbán's grip on power—including economic mismanagement, systemic corruption, generational shift, and Hungary's confrontational stance towards the European Union and Ukraine. We discuss how Orbán methodically constructed an illiberal state by capturing institutions, centralising media, and leveraging constitutional power whilst maintaining democratic appearances, and why the process of unwinding this system presents both extraordinary opportunities and significant dangers for Hungary's new government. The episode also considers how Hungary's experience challenges prevailing assumptions about the inevitability of illiberal forces in Europe, what the transition means for Hungary's relationship with Russia and the European Union, and why the new government's ability to exercise restraint despite holding a constitutional majority will shape democratic governance far beyond Hungary's borders.Zsuzsanna Szelényi is a foreign policy specialist, former member of the Hungarian Parliament, and Programme Director at the CEU Democracy Institute. She was an early member of Fidesz party in the 1990s and later returned to Hungarian politics from 2012 to 2018 as part of the opposition. She is the author of Tainted Democracy, which examines Hungary's transformation over three decades and the erosion of democratic norms under Orbán's rule. The International Risk Podcast brings you conversations with global experts, frontline practitioners, and senior decision-makers who are shaping how we understand and respond to international risk. Healthcare does not lack workers; it lacks a work model capable of supporting them. Modern care assumed infinite elasticity from clinicians, but that model has reached its limit. What comes next is not incremental change; it is reconfiguration: team-based, patient-centered, digitally enabled, and economically aligned with value. When the work is redesigned, the workforce stabilizes. This necessary reconfiguration is not a trend; it is an inescapable reality.

As geopolitics shakes our perception of the world on a nearly daily basis, how does this translate in the tangible terms of the economy? Are states that seem at odds with each other actually avoiding investing in each other, or are they in fact doing business together? And are they doing so more than they did before the current tensions, or less? Host Sabina Șancu and programme executive Francisco Lopez sat down with Tiago Devesa, senior fellow at the McKinsey Global Institute, to discuss trade distances and geopolitical divides, and assess trade diversification. The geopolitics of the Middle East have entered a period of profound flux. In recent years, shifting alliances, contested interventions, and the rise of non-state actors have reshaped the region's landscape. From the Iran–Saudi détente to the Abraham Accords, from the wars in Syria and Yemen to the conflict in Gaza, the stakes for regional and international order are considerable. In his remarks to the IIEA, Dr Hellyer offers a perspective from the region itself, exploring how Middle Eastern states interpret threats and opportunities, the changing role of global powers, and the prospects for a regional security framework less dependent on external actors. He also considers the implications for Europe and the wider international community. Speaker bio: Dr. H. A. Hellyer is Senior Associate Fellow with expertise in Geopolitics and Middle East Studies at the Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies (RUSI), the world's oldest defense think tank. He is also Senior Fellow in Geopolitics and Security Studies at the Center for American Progress in Washington, D.C., which follows senior tenures in Washington at the Brookings Institution, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, the Brookings Institution, and the Atlantic Council. Dr Hellyer has advised the UK government on radicalisation and extremism in Europe, and is regularly called upon by the public and the private sectors for non-partisan expertise on Middle East developments. A frequent media commentator, he has provided analysis for CNN, the BBC, the Washington Post, and The New York Times. Dr. Hellyer has also held appointments at Cambridge, Harvard, Warwick, and the American University in Cairo. He is the author of ten books and hundreds of articles on the politics and security of the Middle East and Europe.

It's hoped a new development at Ennis General Hospital is a stepping stone to a new facility in the region. The HSE has been given approval to carry out a "comprehensive refurbishment and reconfiguration" of the facility's Pathology Laboratory which it states is currently "completely inadequate and cannot cope with any further expansion". An estimated 12 million tests take place in the department each year with sample numbers having increased by roughly 50% in the last decade. Ennis Fianna Fáil Councillor and Regional Health Forum West member Antoinette Baker-Bashua says population growth in the region means a new hospital is a no brainer.

Clare County Council is calling on the Government to address the "huge failures" of reconfiguration and the HSE in the MidWest. It's after a proposal was passed with cross-party support at this week's meeting of elected representatives; just four days after the Department of Health announced a review to determine if a second Emergency Department is needed in the region. HSE MidWest Regional Executive Officer Sandra Broderick is due to appear before the council next Monday for an in-camera workshop to discuss local service deficits. Shannon Independent Councillor Gerry Flynn says the HSE must recognise that serious action is needed here now.

Richard Feynman, winner of the Nobel Prize, said, “Nature uses only the longest threads to weave her patterns, so that each small piece of her fabric reveals the organization of the entire tapestry.” He was speaking, of course, of DNA, the organizing pattern of every type of life on our planet.Your DNA contains the archetypal pattern of your physical body, but the world around you is bigger than your body. The world around you contains an infinite number of archetypes. An archetype is any recurrent pattern recognized by the pattern-seeking right hemisphere of the brain.Archetypes exist in our minds and in the physical reality that surrounds us. Archetypes are the interface that allows us to interpret, understand, and catalogue what we are experiencing.Archetypes are the basis for all similes and metaphors. Carl Jung understood this.If you Google “Jungian archetypes” you'll find that most writers list the archetypes as twelve basic characters: Lover, Magician, Explorer, Creator, Sage, Outlaw, Hero, Jester, Everyman, Caretaker, Ruler, and the Innocent. These 12 characters populate the movies, television shows, novels, myths, and award-winning ad campaigns we experience on a daily basis. But what Jung actually taught is that archetypes are the psychological structures that allow us to recognize recurrent patterns in the world around us. They are the unconscious organizers of perceptions and ideas, since they spring from the systemic order that transcends both the external world and the human mind. Jung claimed there can be no master list of archetypes because there are an indefinite number of them, one for every recurrent pattern we observe. And not just patterns of personalities, but patterns of events, as well. Examples of events that follow an archetypal pattern include: Reproduction, Substitution, Reconfiguration, Following a Path, Collapse, Renewal, De-alignment, Re-alignment, and the Investment Bubble that always precedes delayed gratification.Every introduction of change requires a Pattern Shift, a transition from one pattern to another.Although most events could be categorized as “transitions,” an Archetypal Transition is a specific type of event, such as the ritual of Initiation (baptism,) or the ritual of Union (marriage,) or the ritual of Casting Out (divorce.) An Archetypal Transition is a portal to a new identity. Some examples of Archetypal Transition include being parented, courtship, loss of virginity, a sudden change in status, and preparation for death.Archetypes of Transition open the door for a new and different person to experience a new and different world. As a writer, you create new realities in the imaginations of your readers, so it is perfectly reasonable that you should observe and name new archetypes. You are not limited only to those named by Jung and popularized by tradition. In fact, I have invented names for several recurrent patterns that I have observed, and have mentioned several of them to you already. And now I officially give you permission to do the same:1. Go. Observe the world around you.2. Recognize and name the recurrent patterns that you find.3. Keep a list of them.Indy Beagle and I look forward to reading about your discoveries.Ciao for Niao,Roy H. WilliamsPS – Today's soirée was inspired by my partner, Vi Wickam, who sent me the Richard Feynman quote that opened today's Monday Morning Memo. When Victoria Pelletier sets her mind to achieving a goal, she won't let anything or anyone stop her. Nor will she blame anyone but herself when things don't go the way she planned. Those two personality traits — being unstoppable and making no excuses — have been a recipe for success since she became the chief operating...
Written by Treston Wheat Narrated by Patrick Kirchner Winner of the Inaugural Andrew W. Marshall Paper Prize on Future Reconfigurations in Asia When corporations were created four centuries ago, they fundamentally altered the relationship between the market and the state while also shifting geopolitical power. Technology corporations are creating a similar revolution in the contemporary age. As the world moves from industrial and postindustrial economies to digital ones, technology companies now touch practically every area of modern life. Politically and geopolitically, they are also changing how states interact with each other and achieve their strategic objectives. Technology corporations now play a central role in states' relative power, and over the next two decades they will impact the balance of power in Asia. A country's relative power may be intimately connected to native technology companies as they become essential to economic growth, defend infrastructure and businesses, participate in investigations and attributions of cyber events, and even engage in offensive cyber operations. This paper looks at those different areas, examines trends, and then posits a plausible future in which technology corporations may contribute to a reconfiguration of the balance of power in Asia by 2045. Paul and the Reconfiguration of the Self, (Studies in Christian Ethics, Vol 36, Issue 1, February 2023) in which he challenges the notion that ‘exclusive altruism' or total self-sacrifice is the lens through which we are to understand Christian ethics. He explores the various passages of Philippians which often are used toward seeing Christian love through this lens.
