We are joined by Dr Ilia Xypolia, Senior Lecturer in Politics and International Relations at the University of Aberdeen; and Dr Zana Gul, Lecturer in International Politics at the University of Stirling. They discuss their SCGA-funded project on the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne, the first negotiated peace settlement post-World War One, its aftermath and its lessons for the greater Middle East.Considered by some as the introduction of partition as a policy, and as the “birth certificate” of modern Turkey, the Treaty created a legacy that persists today. While the Treaty also marked the beginning of the end of British foreign policy predominance, this episode discusses the UK's persistent and discrete role in the greater Middle East today, the place of Turkey at the hinge of regional affairs, and touches upon aspects of gender. It also looks at how the Treaty prefigures the reconfiguration of power and influence that continues in global affairs today - with lessons and opportunities for Scotland's role too. Also mentioned: United States Institute of Peace and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). Abstract: Natural behaviors occur in closed action-perception loops and are supported by dynamic and flexible beliefs abstracted away from our immediate sensory milieu. How this real-world flexibility is instantiated in neural circuits remains unknown. Here we have macaques navigate in a virtual environment by primarily leveraging sensory (optic flow) signals, or by more heavily relying on acquired internal models. We record single-unit spiking activity simultaneously from the dorsomedial superior temporal area (MSTd), parietal area 7a, and the dorso-lateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC). Results show that while animals were able to maintain adaptive task-relevant beliefs regardless of sensory context, the fine-grain statistical dependencies between neurons, particularly in 7a and dlPFC, dynamically remapped with the changing computational demands. In dlPFC, but not 7a, destroying these statistical dependencies abolished the areas ability for cross-context decoding. Lastly, correlation analyses suggested that the more unit-to-unit couplings remapped in dlPFC, and the less they did so in MSTd, the less were population codes and behavior impacted by the loss of sensory evidence. We conclude that dynamic functional connectivity between prefrontal cortex neurons maintains a stable population code and context-invariant beliefs during naturalistic behavior with closed action-perception loops. Abstract: Learning from experience is driven by reward prediction errors - signals that reflect updates to our expectations of reward. Despite numerous studies on neural correlates of reward prediction errors, the question of how broader neuronal networks reconfigure in response to reward prediction error signalling remains open. Here we ask how functional networks change in response to reward prediction errors in various contexts. Participants performed the probabilistic reversal learning task in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanner in two experimental contexts: a reward-seeking setting and a punishment-avoiding. We found that the participants' learning speed depended on the sign of the prediction error but not on the experimental context. Whole-brain network analysis revealed a multi-scale community structure with a separate striatal reward network emerging at a finer topological scale and a ventromedial prefrontal network emerging at a coarser scale. We also found that the integration between large-scale networks increased when switching from positive to negative prediction error events. This pattern of large-scale network reconfiguration aligns with the broad range of research showing increased network integration with increased cognitive demands. Our findings offer a first sketch of how processing reward prediction error affects the functional connectivity of brain-wide networks. Copy rights belong to original authors. Abstract: Behaviours and their execution depend on the context and emotional state in which they are performed. The contextual modulation of behavior likely relies on regions such as the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) that multiplex information about emotional/autonomic states and behaviours. The objective of the present study was to understand how the representations of behaviors by ACC neurons become modified when performed in different emotional states. A pipeline of machine learning techniques was developed to categorize and classify complex, spontaneous behaviors from video. This pipeline, termed HUB-DT, discovered a range of statistically separable behaviors during a task in which motivationally significant outcomes were delivered in blocks of trials that created 3 unique "emotional contexts". HUB-DT was capable of detecting behaviors specific to each emotional context and was able to identify and segregate the portions of a neural signal related to a behaviour and to emotional context. Overall, ~10x as many neurons responded to behaviors in a contextually dependent versus a fixed manner, highlighting the extreme impact of emotional state on representations of behaviors that were precisely defined based on detailed analyses of limb kinematics. This type of modulation may be a key mechanism that allows the ACC to modify behavioral output based on emotional states and contextual demands. Copy rights belong to original authors. Richard Feynman, winner of the Nobel Prize, said, “Nature uses only the longest threads to weave her patterns, so that each small piece of her fabric reveals the organization of the entire tapestry.” He was speaking, of course, of DNA, the organizing pattern of every type of life on our planet.Your DNA contains the archetypal pattern of your physical body, but the world around you is bigger than your body. The world around you contains an infinite number of archetypes. An archetype is any recurrent pattern recognized by the pattern-seeking right hemisphere of the brain.Archetypes exist in our minds and in the physical reality that surrounds us. Archetypes are the interface that allows us to interpret, understand, and catalogue what we are experiencing.Archetypes are the basis for all similes and metaphors. Carl Jung understood this.If you Google “Jungian archetypes” you'll find that most writers list the archetypes as twelve basic characters: Lover, Magician, Explorer, Creator, Sage, Outlaw, Hero, Jester, Everyman, Caretaker, Ruler, and the Innocent. These 12 characters populate the movies, television shows, novels, myths, and award-winning ad campaigns we experience on a daily basis. But what Jung actually taught is that archetypes are the psychological structures that allow us to recognize recurrent patterns in the world around us. They are the unconscious organizers of perceptions and ideas, since they spring from the systemic order that transcends both the external world and the human mind. Jung claimed there can be no master list of archetypes because there are an indefinite number of them, one for every recurrent pattern we observe. And not just patterns of personalities, but patterns of events, as well. Examples of events that follow an archetypal pattern include: Reproduction, Substitution, Reconfiguration, Following a Path, Collapse, Renewal, De-alignment, Re-alignment, and the Investment Bubble that always precedes delayed gratification.Every introduction of change requires a Pattern Shift, a transition from one pattern to another.Although most events could be categorized as “transitions,” an Archetypal Transition is a specific type of event, such as the ritual of Initiation (baptism,) or the ritual of Union (marriage,) or the ritual of Casting Out (divorce.) An Archetypal Transition is a portal to a new identity. Some examples of Archetypal Transition include being parented, courtship, loss of virginity, a sudden change in status, and preparation for death.Archetypes of Transition open the door for a new and different person to experience a new and different world. As a writer, you create new realities in the imaginations of your readers, so it is perfectly reasonable that you should observe and name new archetypes. You are not limited only to those named by Jung and popularized by tradition. In fact, I have invented names for several recurrent patterns that I have observed, and have mentioned several of them to you already. And now I officially give you permission to do the same:1. Go. Observe the world around you.2. Recognize and name the recurrent patterns that you find.3. Keep a list of them.Indy Beagle and I look forward to reading about your discoveries.Ciao for Niao,Roy H. Abstract: Exposure to sustained stress can have a profound impact on the brain, emotion and cognition, with either adaptive or maladaptive effects. Human functional brain networks are dynamically organized to enable rapid and flexible adaptation to meet ever-changing task demands. Yet, little is known about how long-term stress alters the dynamic reconfiguration of functional brain networks across multi-task demands. Here we show prominent changes in the dynamic reconfiguration of large-scale brain networks during resting-state, emotional and working-memory processing under long-term stress. Hidden Markov Model analysis detected several latent brain states and switching processes involving the default mode, emotional salience and executive-control networks that are dominant to rest, emotion and working memory, respectively. Critically, long-term stress increased persistent time on brain states relevant to goal-directed demands and cognitive control, with more frequent transitions to these brain states when compared to controls. Furthermore, long-term stress led to higher correlations of the occupancy and persistency of brain states linked to psychological distress and behavioral performance. Our findings provide a neurocognitive framework whereby long-term stress shapes the way the brain adapts to varying task demands and increases the sensitivity of functional brain networks to psychological and behavioral responses. These changes can be both adaptive and maladaptive, reflecting the complex effects of long-term stress on brain function. Copy rights belong to original authors. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.03.24.532772v1?rss=1 Authors: Zhang, X., Li, Y., Guan, Q., Dong, D., Zhang, J., Meng, X., Chen, F., Luo, Y., Zhang, H. Abstract: The hubs of the intra-grey matter (GM) network were sensitive to anatomical distance and susceptible to neuropathological damage. However, few studies examined the hubs of cross-tissue distance-dependent networks and their changes in Alzheimers disease (AD). Using resting-state fMRI data of 30 AD patients and 37 normal older adults (NC), we constructed the cross-tissue networks based on functional connectivity (FC) between GM and white matter (WM) voxels. In the full-ranged and distance-dependent networks (characterized by gradually increased Euclidean distances between GM and WM voxels), their hubs were identified with weight degree metrics (frWD and ddWD). We compared these WD metrics between AD and NC; using the resultant abnormal WDs as the seeds, we performed seed-based FC analysis. With increasing distance, the GM hubs of distance-dependent networks moved from the medial to lateral cortices, and the WM hubs spread from the projection fibers to longitudinal fascicles. Abnormal ddWD metrics in AD were primarily located in the hubs of distance-dependent networks around 20-100mm. Decreased ddWDs were located in the left corona radiation (CR), which had decreased FCs with the executive networks GM regions in AD. Increased ddWDs were located in the posterior thalamic radiation (PTR) and the temporal-parietal-occipital junction (TPO), and their FCs were larger in AD. Increased ddWDs were shown in the sagittal striatum, which had larger FCs with the salience networks GM regions in AD. The reconfiguration of cross-tissue distance-dependent networks possibly reflected the disruption in the neural circuit of executive function and the compensatory changes in the neural circuits of visuospatial and social-emotional functions in AD. Written by Treston Wheat Narrated by Patrick Kirchner Winner of the Inaugural Andrew W. Marshall Paper Prize on Future Reconfigurations in Asia When corporations were created four centuries ago, they fundamentally altered the relationship between the market and the state while also shifting geopolitical power. Technology corporations are creating a similar revolution in the contemporary age. As the world moves from industrial and postindustrial economies to digital ones, technology companies now touch practically every area of modern life. Politically and geopolitically, they are also changing how states interact with each other and achieve their strategic objectives. Technology corporations now play a central role in states' relative power, and over the next two decades they will impact the balance of power in Asia. A country's relative power may be intimately connected to native technology companies as they become essential to economic growth, defend infrastructure and businesses, participate in investigations and attributions of cyber events, and even engage in offensive cyber operations. This paper looks at those different areas, examines trends, and then posits a plausible future in which technology corporations may contribute to a reconfiguration of the balance of power in Asia by 2045. Reconfiguring Relationships: Episode 24 - Astrological Events of Feb 1 - 8 2021 This week brings us into deep introspection and reflection around Venusian issues: self-love, relationships, inner balance, and our investments. We are offered opportunities to improve our communication and find new ways of partnering. There's plenty up for review. It's a chance to take a long hard look at some of our more intense emotions. Where are embedded thought patterns and protective behaviors preventing us from authenticity and intimacy? After a tough but fruitful conversation with ourselves, we can revamp the ways we think of ourselves and the way we work with others. The long distance Aquarian perspective (courtesy of a five planet stellium) provides a touch of emotional distance to help us regain a sense of clarity after some miscommunication.
