Tesho Akindele - Former Major League Soccer and Canadian national team player turned urbanist and real estate developer - is here for the pitch on why athletes make great urbanists, and a dialogue on the intersection of sports and American cities. We discuss: The importance of urbanism becoming a part of popular culture, rather than just criticizing it. The urbanist pitch to athletes, and why athletes make great urbanists. Living and playing in sprawling cities like Orlando, Florida and Dallas, Texas. Shaping the built environment in mid-large American cities like Charlotte, North Carolina. The role that sporting clubs should (and are beginning to) play in U.S. cities. Locker room urbanism talk. Growing in the real estate development profession. Community impact, and why there is nothing like bettering the built environment. Our new campaign: players biking to stadiums on gameday (s/o Klay Thompson). Building better neighborhoods. In this episode, I reconnect with former pro soccer player, Tesho Akindele, for a conversation about his unlikely and unexpected journey from pro sports to urbanism and developing, walkable and bike-friendly communities in Charlotte, NC. I first met Tesho at the annual Congress for the New Urbanism gathering in Charlotte and immediately knew I needed to have him on the Channel to chat about his advocacy efforts in the YIMBY and Legalize Housing movements. He also shares how the book Walkable City by Jeff Speck was instrumental in influencing his passion for urbanism. If the typical professional athlete talks about transportation at all, it's usually in the context of a mulit-million SUV commercial. Soccer star Tesho Akindele, though, isn't the typical athlete — and as he transitions out of his career onthe field, he's making building walkable, bikeable, equitable cities his full-time job.  Today on The Brake, we talk to Tesho about how he fell in love with urbanism, why he uses his platform to talk about parking minimums, and the secret to getting non-wonks on board the movement to end car dependency and create people-centered places. We're back after a couple of weeks off to recharge our batteries and gather info, and now there's plenty to talk about for a full-length show. Starting out on the Orlando City side of the club, the Lions have been busy over the past three weeks. The biggest news is the re-signing of goalkeeper Pedro Gallese to a new two-year contract with an additional club option year. One of City's biggest off-season priorities was to either re-sign or replace the talented Peruvian international shot stopper and Luiz Muzzi has checked that off the to-do list. One of the other things the club has to do is find the right player to occupy the third Designated Player slot and that might be Argentine winger Martin Ojeda. Reports are swirling that an agreement is just about finalized but we'll have to wait and see if this is the guy. We discussed what Ojeda can do for the Lions and why this would be a good move for Orlando City if it comes to pass. In other news, we talked about Tesho Akindele's announcement that he's hanging up his professional soccer boots and going pro in something else. We enjoyed Tesho's hard work for the club and wish him the best. We also talked a bit about the 2023 Orlando City schedule and what fans can expect from it this year. Then we turned our attention to the MLS SuperDraft. In addition to adding four players — three in the first round — there was a big subtraction on draft day, as the Lions send right back Ruan to D.C. United. We spent some time on what Ruan's departure means for Orlando City in 2023. On the Pride side, there were multiple players re-signing on two-year contracts, so the club locked up Marta, Viviana Villacorta, and Erika Tymrak through 2024. What does it mean for the Pride? We've got thoughts on that. The Pride still have a lot of work to do this off-season in the front office, on the technical staff, and in addressing the roster. Meggie Dougherty Howard, Toni Pressley, Celia, Courtney Petersen, and Jordyn Listro are the remaining unsigned players from the 2022 squad. One interesting thing that happened since our last show was the announcement that Debinha will not be returning to the North Carolina Courage. A tweet from former Pride GM Ian Fleming seemed to suggest that he may have been working on something significant prior to parting ways with the team and that tweet came out pretty soon after the Debinha announcement. Could she join fellow Brazilian Marta in Central Florida? We'll have to wait and see, but since we're not allowed to have nice things, we're not getting our hopes up just yet. We also dipped into our mailbag, where we were asked about our thoughts on Gregg Berhalter, the timing of a new Pride general manager, and our Christmas lists. If there's anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. Programming Note: We are in our monthly off-season schedule for recording new episodes, but if the news cycle warrants it, we will of course put out new shows more frequently, as needed. In other words, we might be back in a week or a month. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here's how No. 320 went down: 0:15 - Orlando City's off-season moves rolled on over the last few weeks with the Gallese re-signing, a new SuperDraft class, and the departure of Ruan. 39:10 - The Pride are dishing out two-year contracts — one of which was signed by Marta — and wouldn't it be pretty cool if Debinha signed one? 50:44 - Mailbagbox time! Orlando City SC extended its winning streak to a season-best three games but that almost didn't happen. Tesho Akindele's header deep in stoppage time turned a good performance with a meh result into a good performance with a great result at the death. Tesho is making late game-winning goals a habit and that's one that we hope he just can't quit. David Rohe and I are breaking down the latest win by the Lions — at home, no less! — and make our selections for Man of the Match. We also talked about the Lions who were honored this week with an appearance on the MLS Team of the Week. While the Lions finally got a streak going, the Orlando Pride saw theirs come to an end. The seven-game unbeaten run was halted in the 92nd minute on Friday night by Megan Rapinoe, who lifted OL Reign to a late 2-1 win over the Pride at Exploria Stadium. It was a massive game as far as playoff implications and a match the Pride really could have used as a springboard above the postseason line. Alas... Orlando City B split the difference between the senior side and the Pride, with a 2-2 draw Monday night at Osceola County Stadium against FC Cincinnati 2. The Young Lions got a brace from teenage sensation Favian Loyola but it wasn't enough for the win. To make matters worse, the visitors won the post-draw penalty shootout, 7-6, to claim an additional point in the standings. Loyola's brace was a fantastic celebration of the MLS NEXT Pro contract he had signed earlier in the day. We look forward to seeing how that young man develops as a player over the coming years. This week's mailbag asked us about Welcome to Wrexham, Only Murders in the Building, the choice we'd make between a cup final appearance and home-field advantage in the MLS playoffs, and the biopics we'd like to see. If there's anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. Finally, we gave our key match-ups and predictions for Orlando City's upcoming match tonight at home against the Seattle Sounders. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here's how No. 309 went down: 0:15 - The Lions might not exactly have gotten “hot,” but they have picked up some wins and it's always nice to beat New York City FC. 27:31 - The Pride did not win or draw. This displeases us. OCB did not win but did draw. That's fine. 41:29 - We answer our mail and make our predictions for the Lions against the Sounders in a midweek tilt. Orlando City was off this week with the international break but Daryl Dike has been spotted within the footprint of the 48 contiguous states and we hope to have him back in Orlando after tonight's USMNT friendly against Costa Rica. While the Lions were off, the Orlando Pride were not, as they hit the road to face the Washington Spirit. It turns out that the only team the Pride can't seem to beat in 2021 is Washington, as the teams played to another 1-1 draw. However, with no Sydney Leroux in the lineup and facing a tough opponent during a hot afternoon match, a point seems like a good consolation prize from a trip to the nation's capital. We break down the Pride's latest match in what is now a five-game unbeaten streak to start the season. There's lots of praise to go around. Following Pride talk, we break down the United States Men's National Team's run in the Nations League. OK, we gloss over the Honduras game a bit, but there's a whole lot to unpack from the championship game against Mexico. That match was as Concacaf as Concacaf gets, but the resilient young Yanks came away with a trophy in the competition's first go-round. Getting one over on Mexico is always fun, even with all the shenanigans from Sunday night. Orlando City forward Tesho Akindele jumped on with us this week to talk about his season so far, the Lions' 2021 campaign, what the team is up to during the break, and his approach to so many situations. Tesho was a great guest and we enjoyed this conversation quite a bit. Our mailbag was small this week but we discuss Gregg Berhalter's approach to Sunday's final. If there's anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. That's all for this week. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here's how show No. 249 went down: 0:15 - The Orlando Pride stayed unbeaten and for once Alex Morgan didn't score a goal. Also, the USMNT wins a trophy in a crazy game that had a little bit of everything — even some things that we didn't even know were things. 52:00 - Sorry to keep you waiting for Tesho, but that was an insane U.S.-Mexico match, so blame it on them. We think he was worth the wait. 1:08:53 - A quick update on the upcoming matches for the national teams and Orlando's pro sides and some deep thoughts from a shallow mailbag. Orlando City finally got that elusive first win of 2021 out of the way after Saturday night’s 3-0 win over FC Cincinnati. We break down Orlando’s best game so far, including the return of Mauricio Pereyra, a good performance from Tesho Akindele, an easy night for El Pulpo, and more. Plus, we name our Man of the Match. After that, we’ve got some Tesho talk and maybe — just maybe — some folks are being too hard on the Canadian. And we’ve got an injury update on Alexandre Pato and a general discussion of Orlando City injuries. Christian Smith, manager of Hudson River Blue, joins us to break down the Orlando City vs. New York City FC match-up and what we can expect from the Pigeons in this early part of 2021. Big thanks to Christian, who now lives in the heart of Lion country, so if you see someone walking around Winter Park wearing an NYCFC kit, it might be him. The Pride closed out their 2021 NWSL Challenge Cup run in North Carolina with a hard-fought 0-0 draw against the Courage. We discuss why Pride fans should be encouraged by the four-game set, even though Marc Skinner still has a lot of work to do. There’s a lot of positive energy building up with the Pride and hopefully they can ride it to a much-improved 2021 NWSL regular season. This week’s mailbag asks some Star Wars-themed questions and touches on the protest at Old Trafford by Manchester United fans. We’ve got stuff to say about all of that. Then we get to our key match-ups and score predictions for Orlando City vs. New York City FC on Saturday. If there’s anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. That’s all for this week. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here’s how show No. 244 went down: 0:15 - Orlando City wins! We hope you got your discounted pizza the next day and we hope you enjoy our walk through the match. Plus, Tesho’s reputation and Pato’s procedure. 41:15 - Christian Smith joins us to talk us through the start of NYCFC’s season and tells us what shape and lineup we might be looking at on Saturday, as well as what to expect from the visitors. 1:00:04 - The Pride are out of the Challenge Cup but in the end they were basically two plays from winning the whole darn East. The team seems to be improving but can it maintain that upward trajectory? Plus, our mailbag and predictions. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Today we are joined by Tesho Akindele who we interviewed in a conference room at Toyota Park while he was a member of FC Dallas. He is now a member of Orlando City, so while we are excited for Tesho we can't help but ask if this was our fault somehow. Several players we interview tend to move on to other clubs. Is it a coincidence? Probably! Or is there a Cooligans curse?!?
