Tesho Akindele - Former Major League Soccer and Canadian national team player turned urbanist and real estate developer - is here for the pitch on why athletes make great urbanists, and a dialogue on the intersection of sports and American cities. We discuss: The importance of urbanism becoming a part of popular culture, rather than just criticizing it. The urbanist pitch to athletes, and why athletes make great urbanists. Living and playing in sprawling cities like Orlando, Florida and Dallas, Texas. Shaping the built environment in mid-large American cities like Charlotte, North Carolina. The role that sporting clubs should (and are beginning to) play in U.S. cities. Locker room urbanism talk. Growing in the real estate development profession. Community impact, and why there is nothing like bettering the built environment. Our new campaign: players biking to stadiums on gameday (s/o Klay Thompson). Building better neighborhoods. In this episode, I reconnect with former pro soccer player, Tesho Akindele, for a conversation about his unlikely and unexpected journey from pro sports to urbanism and developing, walkable and bike-friendly communities in Charlotte, NC. I first met Tesho at the annual Congress for the New Urbanism gathering in Charlotte and immediately knew I needed to have him on the Channel to chat about his advocacy efforts in the YIMBY and Legalize Housing movements. He also shares how the book Walkable City by Jeff Speck was instrumental in influencing his passion for urbanism. If the typical professional athlete talks about transportation at all, it's usually in the context of a mulit-million SUV commercial. Soccer star Tesho Akindele, though, isn't the typical athlete — and as he transitions out of his career onthe field, he's making building walkable, bikeable, equitable cities his full-time job. Today on The Brake, we talk to Tesho about how he fell in love with urbanism, why he uses his platform to talk about parking minimums, and the secret to getting non-wonks on board the movement to end car dependency and create people-centered places. Follow Tesho at Twitter @Tesho13.
This week, it's all about the newbies! Both Orlando City and the Orlando Pride welcomed some new faces to the City Beautiful and we're here to talk about it. We started off with the news of Rodrigo Schlegel signing a new contract just one year after signing his last deal. Essentially, it potentially keeps the Argentine defender in Orlando for an additional year and he likely gets a bump in pay for services rendered. Hey, he earned it! Also on the MLS side, the Lions added two important cogs to the 2023 machine in U22 Initiative forward Romiro Enrique and box-to-box midfielder Dagur Dan Thorhallsson. While I was disappointed that “Dagur” doesn't mean “dagger” in Icelandic, his name is still pretty metal and fans can look forward to seeing the versatile player on the pitch this season. As far as Enrique is concerned, the Lions have obviously decided to go for young talent over experience in replacing departing forwards Alexandre Pato, Benji Michel, and Tesho Akindele. Moving to the Orlando Pride side, the team has a new boss. Haley Carter has the credentials as the club's new vice president of soccer operations and general manager. Now, we'll get to see how her experience translates to the position. Meanwhile, the Pride added goalkeeper Carly Nelson to replace 2022 starter Erin McLeod on the roster. And speaking of the roster, the Pride opened preseason camp and we went through all of the position groups. Finally, we looked in our mailbag and, surprisingly, it was empty. That almost never happens! We got to leave work early as a result. If there's anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here's how No. 324 went down: 0:15 - The Lions continue their preseason and some new faces have been added to the mix. There's still some concern over center back depth and the fullback races have yet to be determined, but things are coming together with the first preseason scrimmage scheduled for today. 18:56 - The Pride have a new overlord and an additional goalkeeper as camp opens. We talked about the notable absences from the presason roster in addition to all of those who are on it. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
We're back after a couple of weeks off to recharge our batteries and gather info, and now there's plenty to talk about for a full-length show. Starting out on the Orlando City side of the club, the Lions have been busy over the past three weeks. The biggest news is the re-signing of goalkeeper Pedro Gallese to a new two-year contract with an additional club option year. One of City's biggest off-season priorities was to either re-sign or replace the talented Peruvian international shot stopper and Luiz Muzzi has checked that off the to-do list. One of the other things the club has to do is find the right player to occupy the third Designated Player slot and that might be Argentine winger Martin Ojeda. Reports are swirling that an agreement is just about finalized but we'll have to wait and see if this is the guy. We discussed what Ojeda can do for the Lions and why this would be a good move for Orlando City if it comes to pass. In other news, we talked about Tesho Akindele's announcement that he's hanging up his professional soccer boots and going pro in something else. We enjoyed Tesho's hard work for the club and wish him the best. We also talked a bit about the 2023 Orlando City schedule and what fans can expect from it this year. Then we turned our attention to the MLS SuperDraft. In addition to adding four players — three in the first round — there was a big subtraction on draft day, as the Lions send right back Ruan to D.C. United. We spent some time on what Ruan's departure means for Orlando City in 2023. On the Pride side, there were multiple players re-signing on two-year contracts, so the club locked up Marta, Viviana Villacorta, and Erika Tymrak through 2024. What does it mean for the Pride? We've got thoughts on that. The Pride still have a lot of work to do this off-season in the front office, on the technical staff, and in addressing the roster. Meggie Dougherty Howard, Toni Pressley, Celia, Courtney Petersen, and Jordyn Listro are the remaining unsigned players from the 2022 squad. One interesting thing that happened since our last show was the announcement that Debinha will not be returning to the North Carolina Courage. A tweet from former Pride GM Ian Fleming seemed to suggest that he may have been working on something significant prior to parting ways with the team and that tweet came out pretty soon after the Debinha announcement. Could she join fellow Brazilian Marta in Central Florida? We'll have to wait and see, but since we're not allowed to have nice things, we're not getting our hopes up just yet. We also dipped into our mailbag, where we were asked about our thoughts on Gregg Berhalter, the timing of a new Pride general manager, and our Christmas lists. If there's anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. Programming Note: We are in our monthly off-season schedule for recording new episodes, but if the news cycle warrants it, we will of course put out new shows more frequently, as needed. In other words, we might be back in a week or a month. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here's how No. 320 went down: 0:15 - Orlando City's off-season moves rolled on over the last few weeks with the Gallese re-signing, a new SuperDraft class, and the departure of Ruan. 39:10 - The Pride are dishing out two-year contracts — one of which was signed by Marta — and wouldn't it be pretty cool if Debinha signed one? 50:44 - Mailbagbox time! This week, Bobby and Play By Players bring Orlando City SC and Canada Men's National Team forward Tesho Akindele to the podcast. Akindele boasts over 280 games played throughout his Major League Soccer career, 19 Canadian International Team representations, and two Open Cup championships. Listen in to hear more as Tesho sheds light on his life off the field, including the importance of education, exploring other interests as a professional athlete, and athletes using their voice for greater change.Akindele grew up in Canada and then moved to Colorado where he spent most of his adolescent years. Brought up with a large family influence, his father guided him to find his passion for soccer while both his parents taught him to maintain discipline through both his athletic and academic career. With an emphasis on academia, Akindele describes to viewers how pursuing a degree allowed him to mature and build as a player and seek his full potential in the league. This episode, listeners will have the chance to see Akindele's interests on and off the field including his active real estate investor status and efforts towards providing affordable housing through the “Yes in my back yard” movement.
Orlando City SC extended its winning streak to a season-best three games but that almost didn't happen. Tesho Akindele's header deep in stoppage time turned a good performance with a meh result into a good performance with a great result at the death. Tesho is making late game-winning goals a habit and that's one that we hope he just can't quit. David Rohe and I are breaking down the latest win by the Lions — at home, no less! — and make our selections for Man of the Match. We also talked about the Lions who were honored this week with an appearance on the MLS Team of the Week. While the Lions finally got a streak going, the Orlando Pride saw theirs come to an end. The seven-game unbeaten run was halted in the 92nd minute on Friday night by Megan Rapinoe, who lifted OL Reign to a late 2-1 win over the Pride at Exploria Stadium. It was a massive game as far as playoff implications and a match the Pride really could have used as a springboard above the postseason line. Alas... Orlando City B split the difference between the senior side and the Pride, with a 2-2 draw Monday night at Osceola County Stadium against FC Cincinnati 2. The Young Lions got a brace from teenage sensation Favian Loyola but it wasn't enough for the win. To make matters worse, the visitors won the post-draw penalty shootout, 7-6, to claim an additional point in the standings. Loyola's brace was a fantastic celebration of the MLS NEXT Pro contract he had signed earlier in the day. We look forward to seeing how that young man develops as a player over the coming years. This week's mailbag asked us about Welcome to Wrexham, Only Murders in the Building, the choice we'd make between a cup final appearance and home-field advantage in the MLS playoffs, and the biopics we'd like to see. If there's anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. Finally, we gave our key match-ups and predictions for Orlando City's upcoming match tonight at home against the Seattle Sounders. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here's how No. 309 went down: 0:15 - The Lions might not exactly have gotten “hot,” but they have picked up some wins and it's always nice to beat New York City FC. 27:31 - The Pride did not win or draw. This displeases us. OCB did not win but did draw. That's fine. 41:29 - We answer our mail and make our predictions for the Lions against the Sounders in a midweek tilt. Orlando City SC went a second straight week without any of its three teams suffering a defeat. Although it would be foolish to get used to that, it feels kind of great and if it continued, I'd never complain about it. The Lions went to North Carolina — and so did I — and brought home all three points after a 2-1 win against expansion side Charlotte FC, getting a season sweep by the same scoreline. We break down Orlando City's second consecutive road victory — which included the return of Ercan Kara — and make our selections for Man of the Match. We also discussed the surgery Alexandre Pato will have in his native Brazil and the chances we'll ever see the Duck in purple again. Next up for the Lions is fellow 2015 MLS expansion rival New York City FC but Orlando will be without midfield maestro Mauricio Pereyra (due to yellow card suspension). The Pride stretched their unbeaten run to seven matches, matching the club's second-longest such streak in its history. Orlando went on the road and beat Gotham FC 2-1 with new striker Ally Watt providing the margin of victory. The team has managed to crawl within a few points of the playoff line and if Seb Hines can continue to will his team on to a few more results, a disastrous start to the season will be long forgotten. Orlando's NWSL side also added a defender to the roster this week. Haley Hanson has joined the club to provide more depth to a Pride team that appears to have fewer holes now than when the season began. OCB played twice since our last show and managed to get two results, defeating Rochester New York FC and drawing Columbus Crew 2. The 5-2 win over Rochester was assisted by several first-team players and I'm not saying Tesho Akindele's goal for OCB led to his game winner on Sunday night, but I'm also not not saying it. The kids played against Crew 2 on the weekend and got a 2-2 home draw despite seeing two players sent off. This week's mailbag asked us to provide kickball walk-up music for several Orlando City players and we did just that. If there's anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. Finally, we gave our key match-ups and predictions for Orlando City's upcoming match this Sunday night at home against New York City FC. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here's how No. 308 went down: 0:15 - The Lions got the season sweep over Charlotte with a win on the fake plastic grass of Bank of America Stadium. 33:54 - The Pride made it two straight wins by dispatching Gotham. 59:59 - We answer our mail and make our predictions for the Lions against NYCFC. Orlando City returned to the pitch on Saturday after a two-week layoff and while it would be wrong to say the Lions didn't miss a beat, they at least captured all three vital points in a road match-up with FC Cincinnati. The win was a lot more difficult than it needed to be, due in part to the Lions' play in the second half and partly due to no one being able to look at a monitor long enough to see whether Tesho Akindele's crossbar ricochet fully crossed the line (we certainly thought so), but winning in a place the team has never previously won is always good. We break down the win and make our Man of the Match selections. We also dive a little into the USMNT's crucial win over Costa Rica and how Gregg Berhalter's team is positioned in the Octagonal after the close of the international window. The Orlando Pride played twice since our last show and things did not go well. The Pride will not be heading to the postseason after dropping games in Chicago and Louisville. The team has little to play for with one match remaining in what turned into a disappointing season after the Pride had sat atop the table at the one-third-season mark. We discuss the two matches and dive into what Ian Fleming and the Pride brass have to do to get this team to the next level. This week's mailbag gave us a lot of work to do on deciding which eight teams we think will make the MLS postseason from the Eastern Conference. If there's anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. We close the show with our key match-ups and score predictions for Orlando City vs. Montreal tonight and vs. New England on Sunday. That's all for this week. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here's how No. 268 went down: 0:15 - Junior Urso's goal was just enough to keep Orlando's unbeaten run going Saturday and now the competition gets tougher even if it is at home. Plus, Berhalter's got the USMNT in a good spot so let's just see how things play out. 31:56 - The Pride are toast for 2021 and so they will spend the postseason at home yet again. Changes are coming for this team. Plus, our mailbag and our keys to the next two matches as well as our score predictions. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Orlando City was off this week with the international break but Daryl Dike has been spotted within the footprint of the 48 contiguous states and we hope to have him back in Orlando after tonight's USMNT friendly against Costa Rica. While the Lions were off, the Orlando Pride were not, as they hit the road to face the Washington Spirit. It turns out that the only team the Pride can't seem to beat in 2021 is Washington, as the teams played to another 1-1 draw. However, with no Sydney Leroux in the lineup and facing a tough opponent during a hot afternoon match, a point seems like a good consolation prize from a trip to the nation's capital. We break down the Pride's latest match in what is now a five-game unbeaten streak to start the season. There's lots of praise to go around. Following Pride talk, we break down the United States Men's National Team's run in the Nations League. OK, we gloss over the Honduras game a bit, but there's a whole lot to unpack from the championship game against Mexico. That match was as Concacaf as Concacaf gets, but the resilient young Yanks came away with a trophy in the competition's first go-round. Getting one over on Mexico is always fun, even with all the shenanigans from Sunday night. Orlando City forward Tesho Akindele jumped on with us this week to talk about his season so far, the Lions' 2021 campaign, what the team is up to during the break, and his approach to so many situations. Tesho was a great guest and we enjoyed this conversation quite a bit. Our mailbag was small this week but we discuss Gregg Berhalter's approach to Sunday's final. If there's anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. That's all for this week. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here's how show No. 249 went down: 0:15 - The Orlando Pride stayed unbeaten and for once Alex Morgan didn't score a goal. Also, the USMNT wins a trophy in a crazy game that had a little bit of everything — even some things that we didn't even know were things. 52:00 - Sorry to keep you waiting for Tesho, but that was an insane U.S.-Mexico match, so blame it on them. We think he was worth the wait. 1:08:53 - A quick update on the upcoming matches for the national teams and Orlando's pro sides and some deep thoughts from a shallow mailbag. Orlando City extended its season-opening unbeaten to six matches with Saturday’s 1-0 home win over Toronto FC. The Lions were forced to beat the Reds with their captain and both starting fullbacks tied behind their backs but they were stout defensively and got a timely early goal from Tesho Akindele. They also got some great saves from Pedro Gallese. We discuss the match, Silvester van der Water’s first MLS start, another solid game for the back line, and more. We handed out our Man of the Match selections to the same guy this week. Then we discuss the suspension MLS handed down to Nani just 25 hours before the game. Who asked for it? Why was it necessary? We dissect this and can come to only one conclusion, so put on your tin foil hat before listening to this pod. We also discussed Daryl Dike’s season at Barnsley coming to an end and what’s next for the big guy before we could possibly see him back in a purple kit at Exploria Stadium. We hope he represents the USMNT proudly and has some success in his upcoming friendlies. We’re joined by Ben Cork of Once a Metro this week to find out more about Orlando City’s opponents Saturday afternoon — the New York Red Bulls. Ben tells us what’s new with the Red Bulls under their new manager, what is being done to cover for Aaron Long’s season-ending injury, and what we can expect on Saturday at Red Bull Arena. The Pride got a huge 2-1 road win at the North Carolina Courage on Saturday night, making it a six-point night for the club. Alex Morgan seems to be getting going and Sydney Leroux also found the net, while backup goalkeeper Erin McLeod turned in a standout performance while filling in for Ashlyn Harris (no injury issues there, just some fixture congestion ahead). Orlando faces its toughest challenge of the season so far tonight against Portland and then will also host Kansas City this Sunday. Morgan got another USWNT call-up but it might not affect the Pride much until the Olympics. We explain. This week’s mailbag has some snark as well as questions about Dike and van der Water. Then we get to our key match-ups and score predictions for Orlando City at the New York Red Bulls. If there’s anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. That’s all for this week. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here’s how show No. 247 went down: 0:15 - Orlando City got its second straight 1-0 win and continued to play stingy defense. We break down the win, Nani’s suspension, and Daryl’s upcoming schedule. 39:29 - Ben Cork jumps on to give us all the intel we need on the New York Red Bulls. With no Nani to fear, he’s setting his sights on Chris Mueller. Orlando City got its first W of the 2021 season in dominating fashion over FC Cincinnati. Record-breaker Tesho Akindele, spectacular Nani, and Junior Urso all got onto the score sheet - but how much can we take away from such a lopsided victory?
Orlando City finally got that elusive first win of 2021 out of the way after Saturday night’s 3-0 win over FC Cincinnati. We break down Orlando’s best game so far, including the return of Mauricio Pereyra, a good performance from Tesho Akindele, an easy night for El Pulpo, and more. Plus, we name our Man of the Match. After that, we’ve got some Tesho talk and maybe — just maybe — some folks are being too hard on the Canadian. And we’ve got an injury update on Alexandre Pato and a general discussion of Orlando City injuries. Christian Smith, manager of Hudson River Blue, joins us to break down the Orlando City vs. New York City FC match-up and what we can expect from the Pigeons in this early part of 2021. Big thanks to Christian, who now lives in the heart of Lion country, so if you see someone walking around Winter Park wearing an NYCFC kit, it might be him. The Pride closed out their 2021 NWSL Challenge Cup run in North Carolina with a hard-fought 0-0 draw against the Courage. We discuss why Pride fans should be encouraged by the four-game set, even though Marc Skinner still has a lot of work to do. There’s a lot of positive energy building up with the Pride and hopefully they can ride it to a much-improved 2021 NWSL regular season. This week’s mailbag asks some Star Wars-themed questions and touches on the protest at Old Trafford by Manchester United fans. We’ve got stuff to say about all of that. Then we get to our key match-ups and score predictions for Orlando City vs. New York City FC on Saturday. If there’s anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. That’s all for this week. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here’s how show No. 244 went down: 0:15 - Orlando City wins! We hope you got your discounted pizza the next day and we hope you enjoy our walk through the match. Plus, Tesho’s reputation and Pato’s procedure. 41:15 - Christian Smith joins us to talk us through the start of NYCFC’s season and tells us what shape and lineup we might be looking at on Saturday, as well as what to expect from the visitors. 1:00:04 - The Pride are out of the Challenge Cup but in the end they were basically two plays from winning the whole darn East. The team seems to be improving but can it maintain that upward trajectory? Plus, our mailbag and predictions. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Oh, Canada! In this episode of The Call Up Susannah & Jill catch up with two of the finest from north of the border who have both made headlines in the MLS is Back Tournament. Thomas Hasal, the 21-year-old backup keeper for Vancouver discusses THAT performance, how he was prepared for the big stage, becoming an MLS meme and his new celebrity status. Also, are Orlando City SC the tournament underdogs? Tesho Akindele gives the gals his take and explains why Oscar Pareja has this team rolling. Plus, Jill braves a hurricane to record this episode in her car. This is the content you need, we promise!
Orlando City Stadium is no more. Long live...Exploria Stadium? No, it’s not named after one of the characters on My Little Pony, but instead after a resort company. Money is good and the company gave our club a substantial amount of it, although we don’t know the final amount, which is not all that uncommon. Kudos to the sales folks over at OCSC for making it happen, even if some people don’t seem that happy about it. What’s in a name? A purple palace by any other name is still as sweet. Orlando City came home from Canada with three points — something the team had only ever done once before in MLS play — after a 3-0 win over the Montreal Impact on Saturday. Nani went back to scoring from the spot and Tesho Akindele and Will Johnson added strikes in a game in which virtually everyone on the team played well. We discuss that and give our man of the match. OCB made it three straight results after a 2-2 road draw. The Pride continued to flounder at the bottom of the NWSL by getting shut out yet again. We discuss both teams’ fates this past weekend. We touch on some of the U.S. international happenings and then dive into our listener mailbag. Yes, we have some candidates for best goal ever in Orlando’s MLS history. If there’s something you want us to address on our next show, just ask by tweeting it to us @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. Here’s how show No. 165 went down: 0:15 - Orlando City Stadium has a new name and some people are angry online about it. Oh, and the Lions won big at Montreal, which is pretty cool. 49:50 - OCB extended its point streak to three games, while the Pride continue to fail to score goals or win matches. 1:09:50 - After we talk about all the national team stuff going on with the U.S., we answer the biggest questions our listeners could think to ask us. Orlando City clobbered FC Cincinnati in a much-needed victory. Tesho Akindele has showed out this season but can he shoulder the load while Dom Dwyer is struggling? Does this blowout signal Orlando is on the upswing?
Today we are joined by Tesho Akindele who we interviewed in a conference room at Toyota Park while he was a member of FC Dallas. He is now a member of Orlando City, so while we are excited for Tesho we can't help but ask if this was our fault somehow. Several players we interview tend to move on to other clubs. Is it a coincidence? Probably! Or is there a Cooligans curse?!? 90 Shades of Blue: Recapping our New York City FC in 90 seconds. In front of over 25 thousand fans New York City and FC Dallas played a not so pretty game ending at 2-2. In the 8th minute Tommy McNamara tapped in a shot to put NYC up 1-0 with a great feed by Ronald Matarrita and amazing header pass by Jack Harrison. Great Awareness and team work! Twelve minutes later, Dallas’ Maximiliano Urruti burns our defense and forces a shot into the net that Saunders could not deflect enough to tie the match at 1-1. Tied 1-1 at the half, City gave up an early goal when Michael Barrios is kept on sides AND much like McNamara’s first goal, easily taps it in. Dallas goes up 2-1. Though don’t count City out, not with fresh cut Shelton coming off the bench, when in the 78th minute Khiry slams in a beautiful header to tie the game 2-2 and all credit goes to Mr Jack Harrison who lobbed a beautiful cross into the box. End of game 2-2. Quick Points: Our fan base either likes or dislikes Mendoza. He certainly didn’t help himself when he missed a huge opportunity in the 93rd minute. Thankfully it was only to WIN the game, imagine if it was to tie. Great game by McNamara offensively. Yes I like McNamara starting over Mendoza and he nearly got another goal off corner kick during the second half. He was also the player defending Urruti on Dallas’ first goal and he was the man who kept Barrios on-sides for Dallas’ second goal. Talking about Poor game defensively…Jefferson Mena…gosh. The Colombian homer in me is fading for him. Should Hernandez start over Mena moving forward? I say no. What do you think? Hate on Josh Saunders as much as you want but this game he came through. The biggest of saves was against Tesho Akindele in the 90th minute which would of made it 3-2 for Dallas. Don’t forget to follow the podcast on Twitter @NYCFCPodcast and myself @TheAndresSoto Week Wrap up: NYC stays in 3rd place in the Eastern Division with 45 points and with a negative 1 goal differential. Toronto clinched a playoff spot with their 3-3 tie against the Red Bulls leaving them in first with 47 points and New Jersey in second with 45. Both teams have a positive 12 goal differential. Philadelphia who lost against Portland stays in 4th place and 4 points behind New York City. NYC's next game is Friday, September 23 vs. Chicago Fire who are currently in last place in the Eastern Division. They may have had some luck, poor finishing by their opponents and an inspired David Ousted along the way, but Vancouver Whitecaps got back on the horse again on Saturday night with a 3-0 win over MLS leaders FC Dallas. We look back over the win, the standouts, the key moments and what it might mean for the Whitecaps going forward, now that they've broken their three game winless streak and scored their first open play goal of the season. We hear from both head coaches, Vancouver's Carl Robinson and Dallas' Oscar Pareja, and visit the visitors' locker room to hear from Canadian striker Tesho Akindele, defender Walker Zimmerman and former Whitecap Mauro Rosales. And there's still time to look ahead to Wednesday Western Conference clash at home to Sporting KC. What changes will Robbo make for that one? There's a lot of chat to be had, so have a listen!
It could be some week for Vancouver Whitecaps. We hear from the big man about the win, the 'Caps defence and look ahead to Wednesday's Voyageurs Cup final with Montreal and the possibility of Waston playing against Didier Drogba. The CANMNT advances past Dominica as the younger players shine and give hope for the future. All eyes would have been on the likes of Cyle Larin and Tesho Akindele, but Samuel Piette, Ashtone Morgan and Jonathan Osorio all had their moments looking good for Canada in their 4-0 win over Dominica. The team advances to the next round of qualifying, but up first is the Gold Cup and what will be a much stiffer test and level of competition as this will be Benito Floro's real test of how far the team has come over the last two years.
FC Dallas forward Tesho Akindele shares his Settlers of Catan and Monopoly advice and we discuss his options with the USA vs Canada national teams. In the second segment, we check in with long-time friend of the show and CSN-Washington anchor Sebastian Salazar.
On another all Futbol edition, (Gary and Randy will be back on Tuesday morning for a 2015 NFL Draft Preview)Sean and Matt break down the two Viernes de Futbol games between Chicago and NYCFC and Colorado vs. Dallas. There are just three games left in the MLS Cup Playoffs, presented by AT&T, and the guys set the stage for the second legs by breaking down the Eastern and Western Conference Championship matches on Sunday? Why are the Revs in the drivers seat? Why didn't Mike Petke tell his guys about their impending suspensions? Are the Sounders playing scared? Did LA do enough? It's all here. The Revs' Teal Bunbury, who dropped a goal and beautiful dime on the Red Bulls, calls in to talk day-after activities (hint: brekkie), the best left-footed goal he's ever scored, the Harlem Shake, banter with Jermaine Jones and advice for Tesho Akindele. Email us at ExtraTime@MLSsoccer.com or tweet us at @ExtraTimeRadio. And make sure you check out our West Coast brethren at March to the Match every Wednesday!
Guests include Kyle McCarthy and Tesho Akindele.
The blunderbus(s) is loaded. All aboard for episode 73 of the AFTN soccer podcast. Your usual co-hosts Michael McColl and Steve Pandher look at the latest happenings in Vancouver Whitecapsland with a Dallas post game show. More home points dropped against the FUDs, that's five points dropped in the last two home games, which is simply not good enough if Vancouver Whitecaps want to be a playoff contender. We look back at the 2-2 draw with Dallas, the mistakes that led to the visitors' two goals and the inability to convert more than two of the 30 chances created. Who played well? Who had a game to forget? What's missing and what can be done to change things? We look at all that and more. We also hear post game audio from both locker rooms. For Vancouver, we have some frustrations from head coach Carl Robinson, goalkeeper David Ousted, goalscorer and goal misser Darren Mattocks and captain Pedro Morales. Dallas coach Oscar Pareja shares his thoughts on the game and we hear from rising (hopefully) Canadian star Tesho Akindele. And there's still time to get some tweets from our listeners on where the Caps need to strengthen as the number one priority and a look at the heartbreak that was in store for the U23s in the PDL Western Conference Final Four. Have a listen!
