Savor sea food with Theodora Goss as we discuss the ways in which being an immigrant is like living in a fantasy world, how she knows when a poem is a poem and a story is a story, the power of the specificity of prose, what Neil Gaiman once said about writing for theme anthologies which perfectly described her own process, our surprisingly similar  experiences with editorial suggestions, why so many fantasy writers love Middlemarch, her theories about the best way to moderate panels, how she knows when a story is truly done, and much more.

Page Turn the Largo Public Library Podcast

Hello and welcome to Episode Forty Eight of Page Turn: the Largo Public Library Podcast. I'm your host, Hannah! If you enjoy the podcast subscribe, tell a friend, or write us a review! The English Language Transcript can be found below But as always we start with Reader's Advisory! The Reader's Advisory for Episode Forty Eight is Tripping Arcadia by Kit Mayquist. If you like the sound of Tripping Arcadia you should also check out: The Strange Case of the Alchemist's Daughter by Theodora Goss, Plain Bad Heroines by Emily Danforth, and The Hacienda by Isabel Cañas. Bonus segment my personal favorite Goodreads list Tripping Arcadia is on is 2022 Releases I Might Read Happy Reading Everyone Today's Library Tidbit is a history tidbit! More specifically a very brief history of Largo ending with a brief history of the land the current library building sits on. Largo is on the unseeded lands of the Tocoboga and Seminole people. When the Spanish landed in the 1500s at first the traded with the Native population and then proceeded to commit genocide in the name of conquest. By the 1700s the Tocoboga had been virtually annihilated as a people, leaving the Seminole people as the remaining dominate tribe in the area. However, due to war against the Spanish and the English and White Americans the Seminole people were never able to firmly establish in Pinellas County. You can go back to listen to episode 28 of Page Turn to learn more! During the Seminole Wars white settlers came to Pinellas County and began homesteading. Some names you may recognize include McMullen, Lowe, Belcher, and Taylor. Several of their houses have been moved to Heritage Village to preserve the history of the county. The families that settled mid-Pinellas all came to farm the land. Discovering an area that could sustain citrus crops, cattle, as well as, provided ample fish and other meat through hunting. The railroad arrived in Pinellas County in 1888. Prior to this the area had been called Luluville, so named after a 500-acre lake called Lake Tolulu. This lake was believed to have been named by John Gideon Blitch after his daughter Lulu. However, this is possibly apocryphal as I can find few sources, and much is on hearsay. This lake was only known as Lake Tolulu for a few years as it had been renamed Lake Largo by 1888. Once the railroad arrived this area was named Largo after the lake. With the railroad arriving Largo and the surrounding areas increased in size. While St. Pete grew into an urban city attracting tourists to its hotels and beach, Largo focused on farming and citrus packing. Largo continued to increase in population fairly steadily through the years. Leading to more demand for land. Leading to, in the early 1900s, a major push in the state of Florida to drain away all the fresh water in the entire state, who needs that right? Most people in Florida will know of the push to drain the Everglades lead by Jennings and Broward, but that push can also be felt in Pinellas County. Between 1915 and 1917 canals and drainage ditches were dug to drain Lake Largo. And they succeeded! What was once a major source of freshwater, not only for the human population but also for farming and fishing, had been drained into the bayou. What was left behind was great farming land. As the Largo Sentinel said in 1918: “While it was a pleasing picture before the drainage work … it is now a much more pleasing picture when one looks out over the hammock lands now in cultivation. … This large tract of reclaimed land shows what drainage is worth to (the acreage east of Largo) which has always been considered practically worthless.” My favorite part of this decision? By the late 1940s, less than 30 years later, residents of the area had realized that turning all of their freshwater to saltwater had been a mistake and created Lake Seminole to replace Lake Largo. The land the lake was drained for was used as crop ...

"Cimmeria: From the Journal of Imaginary Anthropology" A group of academics initiate a project to "imagine" a fictional country, only to find that their collective imaginings have coalesced into a very real country with very real history, culture, and geopolitical significance. The story takes the form of one of the academics' writings, which take a harrowing and intimately personal turn. The Author: Theodora Goss is the World Fantasy and Locus Award-winning author of the short story collection In the Forest of Forgetting (2006); Interfictions (2007), a short story anthology coedited with Delia Sherman; Voices from Fairyland (2008), a poetry anthology with critical essays and a selection of her own poems; The Thorn and the Blossom (2012), a novella in a two-sided accordion format; the poetry collection Songs for Ophelia (2014); debut novel The Strange Case of the Alchemist’s Daughter (2017), and sequel European Travel for the Monstrous Gentlewoman (2018). She has been a finalist for the Nebula, Crawford, Seiun, and Mythopoeic Awards, as well as on the Tiptree Award Honor List. Her work has been translated into twelve languages. She teaches literature and writing at Boston University and in the Stonecoast MFA Program. Visit her at theodoragoss.com. The Actor: Wilson Fowlie has been reading stories out loud since the age of 4, and credits any talent he has in this area to his parents, who are both excellent at reading aloud. He started narrating stories for more than just his own family in late 2008, when he answered a call for readers on the PodCastle forum. Since then, he has gone on to become PodCastle’s most prolific narrator, reading or appearing in over 30 episodes. He’s also narrated for many other podcasts, including all of the other Escape Artists ’casts, StarShipSofa and other District of Wonder podcasts, Beam Me Up, Cast Macabre, Dunesteef Audio Fiction magazine and the Journey Into… podcast. He fits in all this narrating between his day job as a web developer in Vancouver, Canada, acting in local theatre productions and looking for voice acting jobs.

Once upon a time, there was a princess named Little Snowdrop, who had six brothers and four sisters. Her brothers were ravens, and her sisters were swans. Whenever they wished, they would fly around the castle on their black or white wings, but Snowdrop, not having any wings of her own, could not join them. She could only wave at them from the window of a high tower as they flew by. Her father was the King, and he loved her very much. | Copyright 2018 by Theodora Goss. Narrated by Gabrielle de Cuir.

This week, in celebration of the 200th anniversary of the publication of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, we are joined by two authors whose own recent works celebrate that classic work.  John Kessel's Pride and Prometheus will be published in February, combining characters from Shelley's classic and Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, while Theodora Goss's The Strange Case of the Alchemist's Daughter, featuring a number of classic characters from 19th century fantastic fiction—including Frankenstein's “daughter”--will be joined by its sequel European Travel for the Monstrous Gentlewoman in July; both are part of her series "The Extraordinary Adventures of the Athena Club.” We touch upon Shelley's work, the problems of writing narratives that exist within the spaces of earlier novels, whether or not Frankenstein was really the first science fiction novel, and—briefly—on the debt we all own to Ursula K. Le Guin after her passing earlier in the week. As always, our thanks to our guests, Dora and John. We hope you enjoy the episode. See you next week!

Normal service resumes with a rambly episode after last week's chat with Jane Yolen. Having decided what they were going to discuss beforehand, Gary and Jonathan immediately head off and start discussing something else altogether! It's a ramble, it's a chat, it's very much business as usual. Topics discussed this week include novellas, Kelly Robson's "Gods, Monsters and the Lucky Peach", the persistence of fairy tales in modern fantasy, and the new anthology Robots v. Fairies.  The frankly dodgy Western Australian internet connection didn't quite hold out until the end, so the chat ends a little short, though complete.   As always, we hope you enjoy the episode. Next week: John Kessel and Theodora Goss are scheduled to discuss their new novels and the fascination with Frankenstein.

Hello Everyone, As promised, here is the finale episode of my interview with Theodora Goss, and it's probably my favorite part. As you'll hear, we talk about Hungary as a fairyland, the politics of walls, Jane Austin as post apocalyptic required reading, and bears. But most important, we really get at Theodora's writer's journey, which is always personal, nuanced, and challenging for anybody who picks up the pen (keyboard? tablet? Smartphone?). Thank you, Theodora for your honesty, time, and of course your stories. Everyone, go buy her book. In today's episode, we'll start the discussion with the differences between vampires, fairies, and witches in Eastern Europe and the Catholic church's fight against them, or at least the belief in them. And speaking of vampires, we'll get a little more into the backstory of the classic novel, Dracula, particularly what (or who) was left out. We'll also discuss some of the other stories that Theodora is working on and how teaching has improved her own writing. Finally, we'll discuss one of my favorite stories from Theodora, Cimmeria: From the Journal of Imaginary Anthropology.

This week we talk with the multi-talented Theodora Goss, whose forthcoming novel, The Strange Case of the Alchemist's Daughter, draws not only from her own doctoral research in late Victorian Gothic fiction, but from her earlier story "The Mad Scientist's Daughter." By focusing on a group of women characters drawn from classic tales by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Robert Louis Stevenson, H.G. Wells, and Mary Shelley—and bearing the familiar names of Jekyll, Hyde, Moreau, Rappaccini, and Frankenstein—Goss gives a voice to the largely invisible figures from classic works of terror. We also touch upon her recent story, “Come See the Living Dryad”—is it fantasy or not?-- as well as the reasons behind the appeal of monsters and the monstrous, and the delights of playing with genre. As always, we'd like thank Dora for making time to talk to us, and we hope you enjoy the episode. Note: We experienced some technical difficulties with this episode. There were issues with the audio (Dora drops out occasionally). We think the episode is interesting enough to release, but do apologise for the problems and hope you'll persevere.

Remembering Cimmeria: I walk through the bazaar, between the stalls of the spice sellers, smelling turmeric and cloves, hearing the clash of bronze from the sellers of cooking pots, the bleat of goats from the butcher's alley. Rugs hang from wooden racks, scarlet and indigo. In the corners of the alleys, men without legs perch on wooden carts, telling their stories to a crowd of ragged children, making coins disappear into the air. | Copyright 2014 by Theodora Goss.
