Working around the clock might help you find success at your job, but what's the value if you feel burnt out? Now more than ever, finding a work-life balance that works for you is essential. Today Linda is joined by Amanda Abella, CEO and founder of Make Money Your Honey, to talk about the value of rest and relaxation and how Amanda finds balance in her own life. The benefits of finding time for rest and relaxation: Having time for relaxation helps generate better ideas, feel better physically, and be more emotionally balanced. These criteria not only affect your work productivity, but also your general mental health and ability to find meaning and happiness in your life. How does Amanda relax? Personally, Amanda goes to the beach. But, for building her business, Amanda likes to think she's on a mission to fire herself. To build stability and time for relaxation within her business, she thinks with the end in mind. Most business owners don't think about the end result and take whatever comes to them. When Amanda hired her first assistant, they sat down and planned their vision. Amanda only wanted to sell and make connections through podcasts. That's it. It took them over two years for Amanda to get to that goal. But she started with that vision in mind and made decisions to reach it. Amanda's experience with letting go: Amanda naturally just generates ideas, so a big part of shutting down was accepting that's how she's wired, and there's nothing wrong with it. Instead of fighting it, which was draining, she just accepted it. However, just because she lets herself develop ideas doesn't mean she starts implementing them all tomorrow. Why relaxation is essential to Amanda's community: Amanda doesn't want her or her team to be running ragged because that doesn't help anybody. She teaches sales to women, who are notorious underearners. Women are conditioned to overwork for little pay and not ask for what they want, and it creates a perpetual cycle of overworking and underearning. Amanda wants to teach women not to accept this. What can someone do if they have a hard time relaxing? If you have a hard time relaxing, there's something you aren't owning or something you're trying to avoid. Do some self-inquiry to determine why and what the problem is. For Amanda, realizing there's a difference between recognizing her vision and goals and allowing herself to become overworked and overloaded feels different. Overcoming Underearning by Barbara Houston (formerly Barbara Stanny) changed Amanda's life and revealed how to earn what you deserve and live at your full potential. Most 8-year-olds don’t dream of working in The White House, but that’s exactly what Linda Van Kessler was determined to do. At age 19 she achieved that dream by becoming a Staff Assistant to President Ford at The White House and following his term in office, Linda moved to Palm Springs, CA with him and became the Director of Scheduling and Press for President and Mrs. Ford. She went on to become Director of Scheduling and Press for Dr. Robert Schuller at the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, CA followed by 28 years with Dr. Billy Graham working in crusades around the world. Linda then opened her own public relations, booking and management company in Beverly Hills, CA representing some of the world’s greatest talent and authors. Today Linda is the CEO of Passion 4 Life Liquid Vitamins and Minerals (passion4lifevitamins.com) as well as the Executive Director of Passion 4 K.I.D.S. (Kids In Desperate Situations) non-profit charity (passion4kids.org), both of which she has started with her husband. Linda Van Kessler spends many hours working with children. This is the cause closest to her heart. Having a profound love for children, she opens her heart and arms to countless children who need love, attention, a listening ear and someone just to talk to. Always quick to give a hug or encouraging word, Linda’s own son calls her “the Pied Piper” as wherever she goes, even on vacations in other countries, it isn’t long before she has a group of children following her around. She can often be seen holding 2 or more children per hand as they clamor to be included in the “love”. Linda and Charles are very hands on with the children they support. In an effort to bring fun and joy to their young, troubled lives, Linda and Charles take them on weekend outings bowling, to the park, to sporting events, restaurants, etc. They personally try to teach the children manners, ethics, morals and help them navigate the difficulties of life. Because many of the children come from devastating, unstable home situations, the Van Kesslers develop long-term relationships with the children and reinforce to them that they will be a constant presence in their lives for many years to come which allows them to build a level of trust that the children can depend on. With a background in media and public relations, Linda organizes all Passion 4 K.I.D.S.’ events and works tirelessly with the media to gain attention for these children in need. Linda is a Foster Youth Mentor for the County of San Diego as well as a tutor/mentor for foreign students at San Diego State University. She also served on the San Diego State University Parent Advisory Board. She also serves as a mentor for the Leap Foundation. Linda’s desire is to share with you how to set and reach a goal even when others say you can’t. She will also inspire you on how to make every day count for others by incorporating a cause you are passionate about into your daily life, business and school life while learning how to make the media an ally in your efforts. Potcast 173 features one of my favorite cannabis scientists to talk about brain injuries and the use of cannabis as a treatment tool for TBI and CTE. You last met Dr. Linda Klumpers during our discussion about tolerance breaks and cannabis during pregnancy on Potcast 155. Today Linda and I discuss the basics of brain injury and the varying cognitive and emotional effects. We explore the pitfalls of diagnosing brain injury, what the existing research suggests about cannabis as a neuro-protectant, and the politics blocking researchers and folks like you and me from learning more. I also ask Linda about the long-term implications of head trauma on adult brains and the developing brains of kids. Not everything we talk about is comfortable but everyone deserves the insight to make informed decisions. Find resources in the Potcast 173 show notes at casuallybaked.com/blog. In this Magnificent Mujer interview with Enrique Morones we are reintroduced to Linda Ronstadt, a woman who is a “Soldadera”, a vocalist, musical cultural, activist soldier, in her own right. She did what they said couldn’t be done. Her vision and her capacity to imagine and hear a sound in her head that others couldn’t propelled her where no woman had gone before; becoming a multi platinum recording artist in English, and becoming an icon in the Spanish language music world with the highest selling Spanish language album of all time. The esteemed position that she holds as one of the most influential and prolific vocalists, recording artists, and popular cultural ambassadors of the last century came through hard work, perseverance, determination, and a great sense of pride and vision as to what a Mexican American woman could create. She has inspired many female artists after her across the genres of Rock, Country, Mariachi, New Wave, Jazz, Light Opera, and Musical Theatre among others to cross boundaries of what is possible to achieve in a career. Linda followed her heart, and her bliss, and nothing was off limits. Today Linda is experiencing physical limitations due to the progressive effects of living with Parkinson’s disease. As you will experience in this interview, Linda’s inability to sing today has not affected her ability to awe her admirers with her sense of gratitude, humor and tenacity to keep acting to effect change and awareness by any means necessary. As she continues to speak out and be an advocate for those who today have been silenced or limited as refugees, asylum seekers, migrants or due to their language or age barriers she asks us to open our hearts. Please share this episode with your loved ones, especially our future generations and introduce them to an account of this inspiring path. Be aware, as Linda reminds us now that we have so much more music to make as a nation and as a world. How amazing it would be if we, like Linda, looked at life as an opportunity to co-create new sounds from those of our families and ancestors and our new neighbors without borders. "It's really important that people be a student of history, ...know whose shoulders you are standing on, each generation, it only takes a generation to forget, what Dolores Huerta and Cesar Chavez did for the Farm Workers cannot be forgotten and already there are kids that are 15 years old that don’t know this history.” - Linda Ronstadt in a 2013 interview with CreatTV San Jose, where she and Dolores Huerta spoke on activist women, for the upcoming Tucson Mariachi and Mexican Cultural Festival, which Ronstadt helped produce. The theme of that festival was the “Soldaderas”, the female soldiers of the Mexican Revolution The 2013 Tucson. Mariachi and Mexican Cultural Festival celebrated the 100 year anniversary of the Mexican Revolution (1910-1920) by celebrating the contributions of the “Soldaderas”. The women who fought alongside the men, were responsible for cooking, preparing the camps, but also fighting on the frontlines alongside the men if their husbands were killed or injured. In 2013 Linda Ronstadt published, “Simple Dreams: A Musical Memoir”, where she chronologized her unique and uncharted path through the annals of recording and performing history with a career that spanned over four decades and earned her 10 top-10 singles and over 30 studio albums. “Simple Dreams”, which she wrote completely on her own, and was very difficult work, for a woman who respects the written word immensely and had set the bar high for her own debut as an author, became a New York Times Bestseller. Her selfcrafted narrative of a woman’s journey through a male dominated music industry, and her own self charted path inspired producers James Keach and Michele Farinola and directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman to pursue her tirelessly to make a documentary, released in late 2019 titled,... Learn about HBS 2+2 from Tess Michaels, entrepreneur and HBS 2+2 student [Show Summary] Stride Funding is an innovative start-up that is revolutionizing student financing with income share arrangements instead of traditional student loans. Today Linda talks to Tess Michaels, founder of Stride Funding, and second-year student at Harvard Business School who joined the class of 2020 through HBS 2+2. She shares how she came up with the idea, how HBS has been instrumental in Stride’s success, and her path to HBS and 2+2. Tess Michaels discusses what it's like being an HBS student with a Start-up [Show Notes] Our guest today, Tess Michaels, has done a ton. I’m going to give you a few details, and then let her fill in her story herself as well as tell us about the new student financing start-up she has founded and is running. Tess graduated from Penn with a Bachelors in Applied Science and another Bachelors from the Wharton School in Global Impact Investing and Operations Management. She has a long list of activities and offices held while there, and in addition founded Soceana, a platform to “democratize giving and promote corporate volunteerism,” which was acquired in 2018. After graduation and being accepted to Harvard’s 2+2 program she worked at Goldman Sachs as an analyst for two years and then at Vista Equity Partners as a PE Associate. She joined HBS in 2018 and immediately founded Stride Funding, which we will learn more about later in this interview. Can you tell us a little about your background? Where you grew up? What do you like to do for fun? [2:31] I grew up in Texas and have a big love of BBQ. I love going to comedy shows, seeing live music and movies. One of my favorite films is Good Will Hunting, a Boston classic! Why did you decide to get two bachelors degrees at Penn? [3:12] Growing up I was really interested in science but also in business. At Penn I had the opportunity to study biology but also operations and investing at Wharton so I decided to take advantage of it. Why HBS 2+2? [4:01] My junior year at Penn I met with a couple upperclassmen who had applied and told me about the benefits. I knew I had gotten a lot out of the business classes at Wharton and wanted to take the opportunity to learn from a very global peer set as well as utilize the case method, which was very different from how I had been studying. 2+2 gave me the flexibility to pursue work that built upon my skill set before going to b- school with the comfort of knowing I was going to go to HBS. How would your initial post graduate years have been different if you hadn’t been accepted to 2+2? [4:54] I would most likely have gone into investment banking anyway. It is a great place to grow a skill set. Having 2+2 let me decide that while I loved finance, I missed the operations piece, and knew I could focus on that once I arrived, which was nice. Do you remember anything particularly challenging about your MBA application process? [5:50] With 2+2 you are applying early in your career, really without formal work experience, and you have to be thoughtful about who you choose to write letters of recommendation. Luckily, I had the benefit of growing my first start up while at Penn, so had people who could speak to my abilities in that regard. The second is crafting the right story. Thinking through your career path, why business school, and where it will take you. What do you like most about Harvard Business School? [7:00] Number one: the people are so inspiring. 40% of the class is international. Second is the experiences – the international trips you take are led by fellow classmates from the countries you are visiting, which adds a whole new level of experience with a local’s perspective. Last, having the opportunity to grow Stride while in school has shaped my experience and made HBS similar to an accelerator - learning from professors, entrepreneurs in residence, etc. What would you like to see improved? [8:12]

Linda began her journey at the age of 46, after raising her two daughters and returning to the workforce after a 13 year absence. Her career up until that point had been primarily in the legal industry working as an administrator/paralegal in the areas of nonprofit, foreclosure, real estate, construction and engineering compliance. In her spare time she acquired her certifications in energy medicine, essential oils, anti-inflammatory nutrition and a certified health coach. She was recently accepted as a board certified health coach with the American Association of Drugless Practitioners. Having passed the age of 50, life for Linda continued to open up interesting opportunities and ideas, and the positive mindset change from her energy medicine training provided the tools to coach women over 50. To Linda, there was a missing piece to help women develop a positive mindset that could help women transform into their fabulous selves! Today Linda spends her time as a Wellness coach for women along with being a makeup artist and makeup instructor at John Casablanca's Modeling Agency. FABOVER50COACHING
Today Linda and I are talking about trust. We'll be talking about warmth and competence perception, and how those things go hand in hand to develop deeper levels of trust. This comes from the book “No One Understands You and What to Do About It” by Heidi Grant Halverson. Will be references this today, I'll link to it in the show notes. And One of the key messages of that book is that ”we judge other people by how we perceive them. But we want to be judged by our intentions.”

Linda has helped me to find my why which is all about simplicity. This has really helped me to fine-tune what I included in my last book, The Belief Zone. It has also given me so much excitement about what I do and the way that I help my clients, by reminding me of the problem that I have solved. Listen in today to find out what Linda has to share with you. Our sponsors for today, Tena.cious, are very near and dear to my heart and they also keep our show alive! The thing that I really love about Tena Pettis is that she shares my love for small businesses. She works with them and she creates offers specifically suited to their needs, and she also hosts one of the very best small business conferences that I've ever been part of in April of each year. It's called The Before Conference. Her vision is that every single business owner goes through many befores, in-betweens and afters and Tina is determined to help you, as a small business owner, to get through those stages quicker and smoother and to help you to retain your passion throughout it all. For more information about this conference go to www.beforeconference.com, where Tena is offering a discount to the listeners of this show. Most people don't realize just how transparent the blockchain is, but every transaction that happens on Bitcoin is public. None of us wants to have our net worth on display, leaving us vulnerable to fishing attacks and allowing others to see what we spend our money on. So how do we approach privacy in the cryptocurrency space? Where should we be storing our Bitcoin to keep it safe? And how can we be selectively transparent, choosing what information we want to reveal—and to whom? Linda Xie was working as a portfolio risk manager for AIG when Coinbase onboarded Overstock in January of 2014. Inspired by the move, Linda sent a cold email to Coinbase offering to work for the company in any capacity. By June, she was employed as a regulatory compliance investigator for the digital currency platform, working with law enforcement to conduct blockchain investigations and track down cybercriminals. Eventually Linda was promoted to Product Manager, and she continued at Coinbase until September of this year when became an entrepreneur in the cryptocurrency space. Linda currently serves as the co-founder and managing director of Scalar Capital, a cryptocurrency hedge fund. An expert in the areas of privacy and security, she is passionate about crypto as an ‘unseizable asset' that governments cannot control. Today Linda shares her take on where we should be storing our Bitcoin and what is stopping cryptocurrency from mass adoption. We discuss the introduction of Coinbase Custody, exploring why the fees are so high and the potential for competition in the space. Linda offers her definition of crypto privacy, explaining the concept of ‘selective transparency.' Listen in to understand what projects and tokens she is excited about and the impact of crypto as an asset that governments cannot seize or control.
