Episode 419 of The VentureFizz Podcast features Chip Hazard, General Partner at Flybridge. Before we get into the details of Chip's career, I have to call out a random fun fact: Chip is the only VC with his own action figure, yes – it's true. There's a DreamWorks animated movie called Small Soldiers. The lead character is named Chip Hazard, voiced by Tommy Lee Jones. As you'll hear in this episode, there's a great story suggesting that the character's name was actually inspired by Chip himself, which absolutely makes sense once you hear the story. But beyond the fun facts, as you'll hear, Chip has a major leg up on most investors because he's successfully navigated multiple platform shifts – from the internet and mobile to the cloud and now AI. What's impressive is that Chip and the team at Flybridge saw this latest AI shift coming long before the hype. For proof, you just have to look at his blog post titled “Applied AI: Beyond the Algorithms” which he published all the way back in 2019. Chip has backed some of the most impactful companies in tech, like MongoDB back when it was still called 10Gen. Today, it's a public company with a $20B+ dollar market cap, and Chip still serves on the board. His portfolio also includes Nasuni which was valued at $1.2 billion following a strategic investment led by Vista Equity Partners in 2024. If you aren't familiar with Flybridge, they are a seed-stage firm investing in ambitious founders leveraging the power of AI. Last September, they announced their latest fund, a $100M seventh fund. This week we interview Christopher J. Millerick. Christopher is a revenue architect, go-to-market strategist, and expert in partner eco-systems leadership who has spent more than fifteen years engineering the systems that translate Private Equity and Venture Capital investment theses into predictable, capital-efficient revenue growth for enterprise SaaS and cybersecurity companies. As Global Vice President of Worldwide Partner Sales, Alliances & Hyperscalers at Infoblox—a Vista Equity Partners and Warburg Pincus portfolio company—Chris led the structural transformation of a stagnant $450M transactional channel into a strategic growth ecosystem that now executes 97% of total company revenue. Under his leadership, partner-sourced revenue grew from 38% to 73% of new customer bookings, new customer acquisition increased 43%, and the organization scaled steadily toward $1B in annual recurring revenue—all while meeting the board's rigorous "Rule of 60" profitability and growth mandates. Chris brought expertise that in collaboration with Infoblox's previous CRO led to the adoption of the "3 WHYs" qualifying framework — a buyer-centric methodology that aligns direct sales, marketing, and partner engagement around the three questions every enterprise buyer must answer before committing: Why now? (Urgency drivers) What happens if I do nothing? (Cost of inaction) Why this solution? (Value clarity) The framework has been deployed across global organizations to compress complex sales cycles and systematically improve capital efficiency. His operating experience spans the full PE value creation lifecycle. He built a greenfield enterprise region at Nutanix from zero to a top-producing region in North America within 24 months, led global revenue responsibility through the successful acquisition of Unitrends by Kaseya and co-led the Plexxi go-to-market turn-around through to acquisition by Hewlett Packard Enterprise. Chris led global channel sales for EMC Corporation's flagship storage business and held a variety of sales and GTM roles with progressive financial impact across a twelve-year tenure. A 5-time CRN Channel Chief honoree, Executive Revenue Growth Advisor in the Hubble network, and Limited Partner at Stage 2 Capital, Chris holds a BA from the College of the Holy Cross, an MBA from Babson College and Chief Revenue Officer Leadership Program Certificate from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He speaks on partner ecosystem transformation, PE/VC value creation through GTM architecture, leveraging AI in GTM and building revenue engines that deliver both growth and profitability at scale.

#390 – How Jim Whatmore chose patience over speed to dominate UK field service

A story about building market leadership by saying no to obvious growth—on purpose. This episode is for SaaS founders chasing international expansion—and questioning if dominating locally first makes more sense. Most SaaS companies chase international markets early. Get traction locally, then expand globally fast.Jim Whatmore, CEO of Joblogic, walked away from that playbook. He spent three years attending HVAC shows in the US, picked up customers, then stopped. He saved his marketing budget for UK and Ireland only. He turned down international revenue to dominate his home market first. From 11 people and £500K revenue in 2013 to 500 people today. Ten-year grind to £9M, then quadrupled in two years through four strategic acquisitions. Vista Equity Partners betting £100M+ on the execution. And this inspired me to invite Jim to my podcast. We explore how geographic restraint and strategic patience create market dominance. Jim shares his thinking about why he walked away from US customers, how staying trade-agnostic opened entire markets, and why he spent four years completely rebuilding his cloud platform while competitors kept betting on their old stack. And you'll discover why he bought competitors instead of trying to outbuild them.We also zoom in on three of the 10 traits that define remarkable software companies:Acknowledge you cannot please everyone – UK and Ireland only, walking away from US revenue Focus on the essence – Field engineer workflows are similar regardless of trade Master creating momentum – Quadrupled revenue in two years after a decade of patient buildingJim's story is proof that dominating your home market beats chasing global reach too early. Here's one of Jim's quotes that captures why geographic focus matters:"Our tagline for job logic is growing job logic, for us, it's personal, and it's personal because of the tenure of a lot of my team have been with us for a long time, and a lot of our customers have been with us for a long time. And there's a lot of value in that, that we're present and that we're on the ground, and that we know our customers, and that's more difficult to achieve in a different geo without a bulletproof strategy."By listening to this episode, you'll learn:Why walking away from international revenue accelerates home market dominanceWhen staying trade-agnostic beats vertical specialization in field serviceWhy acquiring competitors with legacy tech accelerates customer base growthWhat patience actually looks like when rebuilding platforms under competitive pressureGuest InfoFor more information about the guest from this week:Guest: Jim Whatmore, CEO at Joblogic Website: joblogic.com

On the AI front, DataRobot's open-source framework for agentic workflows and Deloitte's launch of a Global Agentic Network both highlight the race to operationalize autonomous digital workforces. Product innovation also remains intense: Snyk's AI Trust Platform, Gainsight's Atlas, and Similarweb's AI Agent collections illustrate how vendors are embedding intelligence across ecosystems. Complementing this trend, Invoca's acquisition of Symbl.ai and Salesforce's plan to acquire Informatica show how data and conversational intelligence are becoming central to customer engagement strategies. Even digital service providers like TELUS Digital are doubling down on CRM-centric growth through the acquisition of Gerent, reflecting how every layer of the enterprise stack is being redefined by AI and data infrastructure convergence. In today's episode, we invited a panel of industry analysts for a live discussion on LinkedIn to analyze current enterprise software stories. We covered many grounds including the direction and roadmaps of each enterprise software vendors. Finally, we analyzed future trends and how they might shape the enterprise software industry. Background Soundtrack: Away From You – Mauro SommFor more information on growth strategies for SMBs using ERP and digital transformation, visit our community at wbs. rocks or elevatiq.com. Richard Change is co-founder and CEO of PFA Solutions, the provider of FirmView software. FirmView® is the leading carry and compensation management platform for private equity investors to manage their internal compensation from fees and carried interest. Richard was a senior architect for a large private equity firm when he discovered this complex problem that was being managed on spreadsheets. He left to start PFA Solutions and bootstrapped the development of FirmView with consulting revenue. From inception, through growth and ultimately acquisition, Richard never took any outside funding. FirmView adoption grew steadily, serving large private equity firms. PFA Solutions eventually grew to 34 employees before being acquired by Allvue Systems in 2024. Allvue is a private-equity-backed software company that serves the alternative investment industry. Quote from Richard Change, co-founder and CEO of PFA Solutions "Once you're in it, once you've decided to start a company, own it. No regrets. No one's going to save you. There's not a fairy godmother that will come and wave all your problems away. You have to own it. "There's no magic wand that will come and wave a wand and say, OK, all your problems are solved. And that magic wand in my mind wasn't outside capital; it wasn't VC funding. That wasn't magic because what do when the money runs out? "Is your product generating revenue? That's the real problem. If there's a problem to be solved and you have a great idea or solution, you can generate revenue from it. Prove to yourself and the world that this is viable and has product-market fit." She also held various leadership positions, including Chief Privacy Counsel and Lead Attorney, Publisher Technology Group at AppNexus, through its $1.6B sale to AT&T. Before advertising, Julia spent a decade in mergers and acquisitions at both Latham & Watkins and UBM. She is recognized as an industry leader at the intersection of privacy, products, advertising, policy, and strategy. In this episode… Navigating the intersection of privacy, product, and advertising demands strategy. Companies need to view privacy as integral to their operations and growth, especially in highly regulated industries like AdTech. Without effective privacy programs, companies face potential deal disruptions, diminished valuations, and reputational damages. For early-stage companies in particular, failing to integrate privacy into their operations can hinder growth, derail funding opportunities, and even lead to regulatory scrutiny. How can organizations ensure that privacy is both a priority and an enabler of success? Developing effective privacy programs requires a tailored, pragmatic approach. Leaders need to educate their teams on privacy obligations and integrate privacy practices into business processes. This includes fostering collaboration among privacy experts and cross-functional departments, such as engineering and marketing, while adapting to industry-specific nuances. In this episode of She Said Privacy/He Said Security, Jodi and Justin Daniels speak with Julia Shullman, General Counsel and Chief Privacy Officer at Telly, about building privacy programs that drive business success. Drawing from her extensive experience in M&A, privacy, and AdTech, Julia offers insights into balancing privacy with business monetization goals. She discusses the importance of understanding industry dynamics and the role of privacy in facilitating successful exits and partnerships. Julia emphasizes the value of cross-departmental collaboration and education in creating privacy solutions that resonate with a company's culture and business objectives. She also provides tips on how organizations can align their privacy programs with broader business strategies to build trust, ensure compliance, and drive innovation.
