In this episode, Kathy Stevens and Linda Soper-Kolton discuss: How Linda developed her love of cooking and her connection to food. The origins of Catskill Animal Sanctuary’s Compassionate Cuisine program. Some of the most common questions asked about the vegan lifestyle. Key Takeaways: Vegan cooking works for all types of eaters with all types of lifestyles. Making the animal connection can be more difficult if you aren’t able to see, touch, and feel the animals. Compassionate Cuisine strives to deliver that animal connection. We are doing damage to ourselves by eating far more protein than we need. If you have enough time to eat animals, you have enough time to eat vegan. “I really don’t ever consciously say ‘where am I going to get my protein tonight?’ I just know that if I eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, grains, beans, nuts, and seeds and these are ingredients that create other foods, if I eat that way, I’m good." – Linda Soper-Kolton Connect with Linda Soper-Kolton:Book: Compassionate Cuisine: 125 Plant-Based Recipes From Our Vegan KitchenBlog: Compassionate Cuisine Blog Connect with Kathy Stevens: Facebook: facebook.com/kathy.stevens.CAS, facebook.com/catskillanimalsanctuaryTwitter: twitter.com/CASanctuary/Books: https://store.casanctuary.org/collections/books/products/where-the-blind-horse-singsWebsite: Catskill Animal SanctuaryInstagram: instagram.com/catskill_animal_sanctuary/YouTube: www.youtube.com/user/CASanctuary

Can you really capture emotion in art? Is there something that you can convey on the canvas that transfers to the viewer? Emotion is such a complicated and complex human experience that the effort to capture it on canvas seems like an impossible task. My guest, Linda Christensen is proving that notion wrong with her amazing artwork. Linda is a Northern California based artist who paints a moment in time in women’s lives, she looks for the emotional connection and tries to capture it. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree and her Graduate Certificate from the University of California, Santa Cruz. In our conversation, Linda opens up about how she got started as an artist, habits and rituals that keep her in a creative flow, how a David Park painting influenced her, why she is ok with “getting it wrong,” tips for connecting with a gallery and pricing artwork, and much more. I know that artist like you will get a lot out of our wonderful conversation. Expressing emotion in art. Have you ever had that moment in your career where you finally found someone who expressed themselves creatively as you do? Who was that artist for you? What was it in their work that resonated with you? For Linda Christensen, that moment came when she was viewing a painting by the figurative artist, David Park. When she saw one of his paintings, Linda had an immediate and emotional connection that she’d never experienced before. That encounter with the David Park painting told Linda that emotion could be captured in a painting. Embracing distraction. What is your process like in the studio? Do you have a checklist you go through so you can get into your creative flow? Some artists love to work with music playing or after they’ve spent time in an art book, but everyone has to find their groove. I’ve found it helpful over the years to hear from my peers like Linda Christensen who are more than willing to share what they’ve found useful as they approach the canvas. Linda likes to knock out all of her errands and personal tasks before she steps foot into her studio. She also loves to have an old black and white movie playing in the background that she’s seen before so she can have a contrast to her painting process. I loved hearing all about Linda’s studio process and her love for Catherine Hepburn movies; I hope you enjoy it too. Getting it wrong. Do you ever find yourself jumping through hoops and trying to please someone else or working fulfill some idea of what you “ought” to be doing with your artwork? Do you give in to those voices and let them shape your art or do you try to silence them? Artist Linda Christensen has embraced the idea of “getting it wrong” because she knows that she’ll never “get it right.” Someone will always have a critique ready but Linda is ok with that, and she encourages other artists to embrace this mindset as well. At the end of the day, none of us are, as Linda says, “movie-ready” we all have flaws, why not embrace them? Outline of This Episode [2:30] I introduce my guest, Linda Christensen. [4:00] What led Linda to a career as an artist? [5:30] Linda talks about how David Park influenced her artwork. [7:45] How Linda describes her artwork and how her process plays out. Linda Nottingham joins me today to talk about her experience selling her healthcare insurance agency. SIN began as a joint venture with a like-minded business partner. After a successful growth in their business, and personal events, Linda’s partner left the company. She recounts what it was like to make that transition. Eventually, Linda decided to sell her company to a larger insurance company. She had high hopes for the merger in the beginning, but she soon learned what is said around the negotiation table isn’t always honored after the fact. Linda tells me how she bounced back from her disappointing experience and found a new path as a business mentor. You will learn about: Linda’s background in education. How she stumbled into healthcare. The small insurance agency Linda founded with her business partner. How they build the largest private company in Chicago for the time. Why Linda and her partner decided to go into insurance. How their partnership was structured. Why Linda’s partner left the company and how they handled her departure. How Linda found the best people in her industry. The process of the company’s sale. The issues that surfaced after the fact. The importance of finding a capable attorney. Why Linda sued her buyer. How she coped with the aftermath. Linda’s time in retail. What is SCORE? The power of admitting mistakes. How to be a good CEO. Of all the things you wished you’d known to do, today’s guest has covered a couple of the super important ones in business. Linda Nottingham had the spectacular experience of being on bad terms with her acquirer — both in the sense of poorly worded terms in her sale agreement and being on bad terms with the individuals themselves (and going as far as lawsuits on both sides). If that doesn’t catch your interest as an entrepreneur, I don’t know what will. Linda’s situation is all-too-common and can happen to anybody, but here are some key points to take away from her experiences. Document, Document, Document Everything you do with your partners or potential buyers that pertains to the sale of the business should be documented. Despite wanting to see the best in everybody, you really have to protect yourself. And, honestly, if your buyer is upfront and honest with you, what issue could he or she have with committing verbally agreed-upon terms to paper? So you want to ensure those clauses and stipulations get in there in ink, not just a handshake or verbal agreement. The one huge boon Linda had working for her was having a buy-sell agreement in place from day one. Before her company earned any revenue or had to make any big decisions, she and her partner sought a professional to write up a buy-sell agreement for them which covered what would happen should one of them need to leave the company. This saved them so much hassle when Joan’s husband got sick and she had to leave the company sooner than anticipated. By following the document they created before a time of stress and need was upon them, Linda and her partner were able to complete their buy-out discussions in 30-40 minutes. Can you think of how many man hours they saved by doing this early? How much money? And also, how many personal relationships stayed intact by having this document agreed upon in times of cooler heads? Co

Linda Seabright and James Arey have a lot in common. Linda is a radio personality on KRCB, one of the NPR stations in San Francisco. James is a radio personality on Classical 104.9 in New Orleans, and you might have heard him in his previous incarnation as an announcer on New Orleans NPR station, WWNO. How James jumped ship and ended up back on the same ship is a pretty interesting tale. How Linda ended up teaching mindfulness while still contemplating her previous 6 boyfriends going all the way back to the guy she toured Europe with for a year on 800 is an even more interesting tale. While all that s going on, Kelcy Mae has a new band, called Ever More Nest, a new spirit guide, and a new record coming out, called The Place That You Call Home. And perhaps what might be the biggest revelation to come out of today s show you can get Quaaludes legally in South Africa. If you don t know what a Quaalude is, we ll be selling them at Happy Hour as soon as C Rock hooks us up. Photos at Wayfare by Alison Moon.

She teaches heart-centred business owners how to get over: self doubt, the fear of being seen, and the fear of charging their full worth, which means they can then go on to market themselves so much more boldly, create more clients, and make an even bigger difference in the world doing what they love, rather than just getting a job to pay the bills. Linda has been running TIYS for 14 years, so like Melanie Mackie's interview last week, it was great to hear her wisdom and insights when it comes to her experiences of being an entrepreneur during that time. We talked about overcoming inner resistance, self-confidence, and doing the work you really (really) want to be doing. Three words that sum up what the entrepreneurial journey has meant to Linda so far are: "Procrastination, Fear and Growth" What you'll learn by listening to this episode: - What a transformational impact it had on Linda and her business, when she went from 'people pleasing' to listening to her own voice, and deciding to act on that instead. - The huge lightbulb moment she had, when asked one simple question by her coach. - How Linda went from being stuck in a feast & famine cycle to being in a place where now, she is generally booked up for two months in advance. - What self-care looks like for Linda, and how fresh air and getting on her bike is key to recharging her batteries every day. - The importance of finding the right networking communities that connect you to your tribe of people. - How thinking that just being very good at what you do is a bit like trying to fly with one wing, and how learning the sales and marketing piece changed everything. Recommendations and Resources: During our conversation, Linda refers to two business coaches who each helped her make incredible progress in her business, they are: www.CatherineWatkin.com Corrina Gordon Barnes (n/b Corrina has since moved her focus from teaching business and marketing, towards the work that she does now which is relationship coaching. However her website www.YouInspireMe.co.uk is still available, and on there you'll find a treasure trove of information when it comes to learning all about authentic marketing.
