hi, my friends! Welcome back to another episode of "tena talks" I'm Tena Pettis, and today, we're diving deep into a topic that's close to every entrepreneur's heart – finding that delicate balance between working in your business and working on your business. We'll define these terms, uncover their significance, and explore how you can shift your focus for long-term success. So, let's get right to it. What do I mean by "working in" and "working on" your business? Working in your business involves the daily grind – those tasks like fulfilling orders or providing services. In contrast, working on your business entails activities like creating new programs, updating your website, and crafting marketing content that drive future growth. Now, let's tackle the big question – why is this dilemma so important? Working in your business often means immediate cash flow – it's the essential lifeblood of your operation. However, working on your business is an investment in your future, where you'll see cash flow later. The work you're doing today might not yield results for 3-6 months, but this typically applies to the work done when you're working on your business. So, how do we make that shift in focus? Here's a three-step plan: Choose one pivotal aspect of your business to work on right now – something that will bring you a concrete win. Dedicate specific time in your schedule to these critical tasks. Making working on your business a priority is essential. Paint a vivid picture of what these efforts will achieve when they're completed. Visualize the impact and benefits they'll bring to your business. To bring this dilemma to life, let me share a few real-life examples of times I've successfully shifted my focus from working in to working on my business: Productivity Retreats: These retreats allowed me to step away from the daily grind and focus on strategic planning and growth. "Fall in Love with Twitter" Online Course: Taking 3 days to write, design and launch a new online course. "Contagiously Confident" Program: Creating this program not only generated income but also expanded my brand's reach and reputation. "FLOW" Group Membership: One week to pull together an idea and create an entire community. Here is more information on this current membership: www.tenapettis.com/flow  So there you have it, my friends – the entrepreneur's dilemma, working on versus in your business. It's a challenge we all face, and by understanding the distinction and taking deliberate steps to shift your focus, you can pave the way for long-term success and sustainability. Thanks for joining me today on "tena talks". Be sure to subscribe for more insightful discussions on the journey of entrepreneurship. - tena pettis www.tenapettis.com www.instagram.com/tenapettis

Are you wondering how sales have changed during COVID-19? There's no doubt that market conditions continuously vary, making it challenging to escape its ripple effects. There's a great deal of uncertainty right now, and my heart hurts for those businesses that had mandatory shutdowns. But as they say, every cloud has a silver lining. I want to empower you that many of my clients are having their BEST YEARS IN BUSINESS RIGHT NOW. What's the new normal that we need to adapt to stay on top of the game and weather the storm? Let's find out from my guest, Tena Pettis, about the actionable strategies used by top businesses right now! Part One of ‘How to Sell Anything: The Actionable Strategies Used by Top Businesses Right Now with Tena Pettis’ Meet Tena! She can often be found at the hockey rink (yes, even in the summer), the cutest local coffee shop, or cozied up in her home office on a Zoom meeting.  After ten years of running and owning multiple businesses and managing a couple of dozen employees, she found herself ready to ditch it all to work from home alongside her hubby and three kiddos.  Fast forward right to the middle of 2020, their fam has decided to bring even more home... add 'teacher' to her pile of titles. Tena is a truth-seeker, essential oil dealer and lover of deep, quality conversations.   Tena thrives on relationships and connections. Her essential oil business is designed to be event-based, where sessions are usually held in person. You can imagine it gives people a more memorable experience by actually smelling the oil products in person.   Due to COVID-19, she had to bring her entire business online, which turned out to be an emotional transition. She had moments of grief when her flight to Arizona got canceled. She was supposed to meet up with the top leaders on her team, and she could have met thousands of people if her plan went through successfully. But as expected, we all need to adapt to constantly changing market conditions. Since it's her primary source of income, she knew that she needed to pivot quickly. Personally, I can relate to her; we all do! I had to go through this rollercoaster of self-pity, anger, and grief because we depend on live events. Many of my clients have booked their plane tickets to attend the Sales Camp event, but we had no choice but to cancel some appointments and events. As entrepreneurs, it sucks that the situation doesn't give us an option, but I had this strong realization that I was made for this! As a sales expert, I've been preparing for this for years. I know how to change your beliefs.  Part Two of ‘How to Sell Anything: The Actionable Strategies Used by Top Businesses Right Now with Tena Pettis’ Let’s go back to 2009, Tena knew that her job wasn't cutting it for her. With the encouragement of family, friends, and her hubby, she left her job in the corporate world to begin running her own company called TENA.CIOUS. Along the way, she eventually realized, "I want to be passionate about what I'm selling." Can you imagine how that feels? Selling something you're no longer excited to sell?  Moving forward, this is how she transitioned to becoming a wellness advocate, sharing the life-enhancing benefits of therapeutic-grade essential oils with the world. Now, she enjoys sharing the world's highest-quality essential oil products—products that have been developed by highly-educated and experienced botanists, chemists, health scientists, and healthcare professionals. Despite the pandemic, Tena remained committed to leading her team and supporting them. They poured out their time into their online classes since most people are stuck at home. She scheduled what she calls, “Key Leader Calls” with every single one of her leaders each week. They received 30-minute strategy calls if they were part-time or, if they were full-time, received 60-minute strategy calls. They talked about three things they were to accomplish each week and three things that they already achieved. What we can learn from her successful direct sales strategy is the importance of scheduling intentionally. If it's not on your calendar, it's not going to happen. It's a matter of consistently showing up and being bold. Her story is an inspiration for everyone because we need everyone to show up powerfully and lead their industry more than ever. Don't let the news about mandatory shutdown discourage you. Keep going because this season is full of possibilities!  Ready for a speaker that takes your sales to the next level? Now getting to launch this venture into its 3rd year, Tena shared with us some of her biggest lessons learned, and why she loves doing events. In this episode we discuss: Why Tena decided to do a live event and the experience (or lack of) she had putting on something at such a large scale How Tena set-up the event to make her money back, and the different ways she makes income from it How she used free masterminds to hand pick her attendees and keep the integrity of the room at a maximum How many tickets she gave away free to her first event (you’ll be shocked by this answer), and the cool story behind it. The biggest lesson she learned and the mistake she made in year 2 vs. year The details she refused to overlook, and the difference they made The biggest piece of prep work she did before ever creating the event, and how that drives every decision she made You can learn more about The Before Conference by clicking here: The Before. Today's guest is Shawndel Spader. Her business has really grown a lot over the past couple of years, so I'm really excited to dig in and hear what she's done to grow it and also how she's managed to blast through some of the limiting beliefs that might have got in her way.   Shawndel is the powerhouse behind Spader Group LLC, a virtual Bookkeeping and Office Management Company. She has a degree in Business Management and Accounting from Rasmusson Business College and over nineteen years of experience in managing business finances. Shawndel greets each client with a smile and energetic initiative to develop a plan for them to accomplish their goals.      In the few years before Shawndel launched The Spader Group, she was doing Daycare.  She really wanted to go back to where her heart lived however, as although she loved her kids, she really needed more for herself. At the time she first launched The Spader Group, she held the limiting belief that nobody would believe that she was qualified to do it because she thought that people would look at her most recent experience and say that she ran a Daycare.  She was belittling, in her own head, where her experience was lying. Once she got over that and realized that she had actually been running a business for the last three years and she was more than capable of being supportive to other business owners with their finances, bookkeeping and office administration, huge doors opened for her.  Listen in to find out more.   Show highlights:   It's interesting that women tend to keep perpetuating the beliefs which are their own worst enemies. Shawndel explains how she managed to overcome these limiting ideas that she held about herself.  Two big things happened- one of them was that she decided to step right outside of her comfort zone and she joined a Networking Group. This was terrifying for her at first as she had never before had to go out and promote herself. The women in the group understood and supported her and helped to pull her out of her shell and so she soon realized that she could both speak the speak and walk the walk. The second thing was that she met Ursula very early on, through Tena Pettis, who she really looked up to. Then huge doors opened for her again, through her knowing that she had support and that people believed in her, and through having  Ursula help her to transform those ideas into tangible tools.  Shawndel attended a Sales Camp with Ursula and then four months later, she noticed a huge upswing with her sales, although she hadn't quite doubled them yet, at that point. Then, a month later, she actually tripled her sales! From there she let go of most of her limiting beliefs and seeing the true, hard numbers, she realized that she was actually playing a whole new ballgame. She realized that with selling, consistency is key and also knowing that she needed to be really clear and focused about what she was going to say, really changed things for her. She became confident about her abilities from that point on. Shawndel's clarity on what she was offering and on how she could truly help other business owners was huge and it really helped them to see her company's value. Shawndel became laser focused and clear about what she was selling, so it became easy to explain to clients how they could utilize her company's services.   Shawndel explains what she did differently and how she managed to close almost all of her sales, right after Sales Camp. She had become intentional and she knew what she was going to say. She knew that what she was offering was exactly what her company could serve. She could verbalize things in a way that was clear to others and it's hard to catch her off-guard when she's really clear. The number one limiting belief that Shawndel changed was the “who am I to do this?” belief. She changed that to “why not me?”. She now knows that she has tools and resources and she wants to share them.  The top two strategies that Shawndel and her team implemented in order to triple their sales for the first time, were consistency and a laser focus on exactly what it was that they were sharing and how they could be of service- Bookkeeping being their front runner in that area, with the Office Management piece following just behind that. This pertains to both new and existing clients.  Shawndel's team manages and takes care of their clients and she takes on the sales role, so she went back to her “why not me?” conversation with herself and pep talked herself, in order to become really clear about what she was doing and to overcome any resistance she may have had, to following up with prospective clients. She also relies on notes that she's made, to pick up where she left off with the prospective clients.  She uses an Excel Spreadsheet to help her keep track. They've dabbled with a few different CRL's, but have always reverted back to Excel, due to its consistency. She keeps her notes right there, in her Spreadsheet. Shawndel's had to follow up nine or ten times, with certain prospects, before converting them to sales, so it's always worth following up until you get a clear “yes” or “no”. Shawndel gives some strategies that she uses.  Really knowing your numbers, so that you can make educated decisions is really key, so keeping your Spreadsheets up to date is really crucial. She thinks that everybody needs to use a bookkeeping tool of some kind, even a simple one, so long as you can have your sales and expenses in front of you and that you know what the numbers are telling you. Best to schedule an hour a week, to stay on top of it. Also, you should know which things you should be doing in your business and which things should be delegated, so that you can do what you're good at and grow your business. All your business processes should be really clear and consistent. Consistency is key in whatever you do in your business.   Shawndel's special offer: A free 30-minute consultation, to talk about where you're at with your business and in the areas that Shawndel's company can serve you, you will get a 10% discount for the first consultation.  You can find her at www.spadergroup.com. Today's guest is the amazing Angie Weber. After finishing college, at the University of Minnesota, Angie wasn't sure where she was going to end up, until she was introduced to Tena Pettis, the owner of Tena-cious. She jumped on board at Tena-cious and has never looked back. As a committed and loyal member of the team, Angie has seen Tena-cious grow, from its baby stages to the incredible storehouse of minds that it is today. She's sometimes known as mini Tena and she remains oblivious to the fact that almost everyone in the office really aspires to be a mini Angie! She has learned more, from watching the business grow from the ground up, about the processes, struggles and successes than she could ever have imagined. Entrepreneurship was never a part of her plans, yet she had the drive and heart and she took Tena-cious on, as if it was her own company. She's a self-proclaimed Intrapreneur and with her passion for making an impact, she co-founded Hello Life, a natural cosmetics line, giving back to Mental Health awareness. As well as all of this, she's a wife, mom, friend and daughter. She's going after some big goals and can't wait to tackle the challenges ahead, while trying to fit in A Balancing Act, between jobs. She also has a podcast,  on the Balancing Act. Listen in to find out more about Angie and what really drives her.   Show highlights:   After graduating, Angie really didn't want to get into a 'big girl job' just yet, so she worked in a restaurant. She had the mindset that she was eventually going to be in a nine to five and would have to work for the rest of her life, so she had the limiting belief that you had to work really hard, in order to make a good amount of money. She never thought that she would ever be in sales either. She thought that she would have to be sleazy and pushy to be in sales and that people would think that she just wanted their money. Getting into the mindset that sales was actually serving people with sales was really a big thing for her. Coming into a company that she didn't own for herself, she had little confidence with selling, so Tena told her to just go with her gut, when it first came to naming a price.  That gave her a lot more confidence, for selling. She felt as if she could take ownership and that's also where her entrepreneurial journey really started. It helped that she felt that she had some say in the business and also about prices. That was super powerful for her. Then, about a year later, she had a moment,  at a Sales Camp, where she looked at Tena's gold watch and told Tena that she would have to buy her a watch like that when she managed to double her sales. Tena loved the idea and the challenge was on! After more than doubling her sales, she finally figured out that she really could do it! It really takes a lot of work to double your sales in one month, but she got over her initial limiting belief. After she doubled her sales, she believed that she was a great sales person and she was able to hit her goals. The month that she doubled her sales, she was just under $35 000- her goal was $30 000, and she was a little upset that she didn't quite make the $35 000 mark. She realized that when you're motivated, you keep trying to stretch yourself.  She changed her intention from focusing on money, to focusing on the number of Strategy Sessions she wanted to help people with, in that month. Angie's current average closing ratio is at about sixty to seventy percent. She managed to rid herself of her limiting beliefs around money- that people who are rich can be really greedy and shady and also that what she was doing was so easy and second nature to her that it didn't warrant being paid for. She came to realize that her services really are amazing and valuable and they really do help clients out and that's why she's able to be paid for them.  Following up was a number one thing for Angie, with Hello Life, so she stayed really consistent with getting back to clients. She overcame the limiting belief that because the person didn't call her back, they didn't want to work with her. Keeping track of her numbers was also very important to her. She set a date, her birthday, as a strategy to motivate her towards doubling her sales for the first time. She managed to overshoot her goal by noon of that day. Angie always had her work in progress sheet in front of her- this is a strategy that really helped her during the times that she just wanted to give up. She and Tena also always have a call sheet, to list the top twenty-five people that they want to reach out to, at the beginning of every week and this, as well as a Monday morning meeting, also help to keep her motivated. Using accountability partners and having her tribe of entrepreneurs around her, really helps keep her on track and motivated. Going back to money loves a plan and when one door closes, another one opens, also keeps her on track and motivated. Events are a really great way to sell. It is a lot harder if you're not known, though. It's much easier in a warm market. Fear of success is another limiting belief. Just because people say you should, doesn't mean you have to.. Facebook and Instagram take a lot of time and energy.     Go to www.salescoachnow.com, to download Ursula's free video series, Secrets of the Top Ten Percent, valued at almost $500.    Ursula's email address is: ursula@salescoachnow.com

He actually said to me "you are way too talented to be sitting in a cubicle" and it just like a huge light bulb went off. I always wanted to do the entrepreneurial thing. And I just never really knew what it looked like." Tena Pettis "When I started thinking of Tena.cious and that light bulb went off. I thought, 'you know what? I don't want to be like every other design firm or web firm or when they combine and do design and web. I thought what is like that third thing I can do. And again, light bulb, it was like, I can manage Facebook Business Pages for people." Tena Pettis "One of the things that really changed me was in January in 2013 is when I first did my first coaching program. And it was a group coaching program that I did with Erika Lyremark. And she, back then, had a business called The Morning Whip or the Daily Whip actually, and one of her courses was called The Morning Whip. She was an ex-stripper, she's doing amazing things still to this day. But she's kind of like similar in what she teaches to like the Marie Forleo B-School, but very different and much more hands on. You got to talk to Erika all of the time. So, I started working with her. And I remember at the time, in December of 2012, we had about $10,000 in sales a month. So, you know I had staff. I had overhead. I had all of these different things. And $10,000 is really not a lot. I hired and did that group coaching program and by February, actually, we had more than doubled our sales. So, that February was $22,000 in sales for that month. I was a true believer of the coaching program, let me tell you. And it just changed my whole mindset." Tena Pettis "One thing that does come easy to me is ideas. I'm never out of new ideas...what's been hard is knowing when to take that next step. Knowing when to hire that person. Or when to take that next step. Risk." Tena Pettis "I love to talk to people who have been there and done that." Tena Pettis "I think Masterminds are best when people aren't working together." Tena Pettis "I want to keep making the stuff we have, that much better." Tena Pettis "I think most people and women especially are taking on too much at a time. And we want to do every social media platform and have our blog look perfect and our video look perfect and do Periscope and Blab and Meerkat. And blah blah blah blah blah. And the thing is, no one is benefiting from that. So, I say narrow things down. Declutter as much as you possibly can."
