Dan Michaels mother Dorothy Olson passed away a tribute, legacy,  a song and a laugh too!  Here's the full obituary    Dorothy Olson, age 91, was reunited with Vince, the love of her life, on April 24, 2022. She touched many lives during her 91 years and will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew and loved her.  A funeral service will be held at 5:00 PM Saturday, April 30th at Epworth United Methodist Church in Valley City.  Visitation will be held on Saturday from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM at Epworth United Methodist Church.  A formal time of sharing memories and stories about Dorothy will begin at 4:00 followed by the funeral service beginning at 5:00 PM.  Interment will be held on Monday, May 2nd at the North Dakota Veteran's Cemetery in Mandan at 3:00 PM.  An online guestbook and the time of sharing and the funeral service for Dorothy will be livestreamed at www.lerudmathias.com. Dorothy was born to Art and Alice Ratzlaff on September 20, 1930 in Valley City where she grew up and graduated from VCHS in 1948. During her junior year, she met Vincent Olson. She was charmed by his effervescent personality, but was not particularly impressed that he did not seem to share her seriousness for studying. They began dating in 1947 and, as she would say, “the rest is history!” After graduating, Dorothy went on to Mercy School of Nursing in Valley City. Vince & Dorothy were married on same afternoon she graduated with her RN degree and Vince shipped out for Korea a short time later.  With some urging from the Valley City community, the Olson Funeral Home was established and celebrated its grand opening in September of 1957. They then waited….and waited…and waited for business. Dorothy was the boots on the ground for getting organized and office affairs. To accommodate time with their growing family, they later merged with another funeral home in Valley City and started the Peterson-Olson Funeral Home (1965-1983). After “retirement,” Vince ran for the legislature, which presented Dorothy with yet another new adventure in Bismarck.  Dorothy worked as a nurse in a variety of capacities. While Vince was in Korea, she was the night supervisor at Mercy Hospital, later working at MacDonald Clinic. At the same time, they owned and operated the ambulance service where Dorothy was the “onboard nurse.” In 1979, she quit working at the funeral home and began a new career with Proctor & Gamble, marketing adult diapers. The traveling was overwhelming and she left the job after two years. She then went to work for Professional Rehabilitation Management. Some travel was required, but now with Vince retired, he began “Driving Miss Dorothy” all over the region. Dorothy loved her friends and relationships. She played with the same bridge club for fifty years. She enjoyed her Bible study and was involved in many church activities. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and traveled around the region to attend functions. She was active with water aerobics, becoming the leader during the months she spent in Arizona. She always welcomed visitors in both Arizona and North Dakota, Let us raise our glasses with a Crown Royal toast to Dorothy for a job well done!  At her 80th birthday celebration Dorothy said, “I have had a good life. God has provided me with a wonderful husband…. five children who have made my life worthwhile and, the loves of my life, seven grandchildren: Sarah, Becky, Mike, Charlie, Dustin, Hannah and Haley. I have been blessed indeed!” (Dorothy in her own words.) Dorothy will be lovingly remembered by her children: Bob Schlotman (son-in-law), Cooperstown; Linda Olson, Cooperstown; David Olson, Valley City; Dan (Patty) Olson, Fargo; Grandchildren: Michael (Jenny) Schlotman-(Bob); Sarah (Rodd) Zorn & Becky (Perry) Kuss-(Connie); Charlie Olson-(Linda); Dustin Olson, Hannah (Cory) Hoffstatter & Haley Olson-(David); and Great-Grandchildren: Berkley Kuss-(Becky); Grace, Madelyn & Gus Zorn-(Sarah). Hattie & baby to be born Hoffstatter (Hannah) Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Vince; an infant son, Michael; daughters, Beth and Connie; and her parents and grandparents. Show Notes  Today we have on our show a favorite guest, master storyteller, Linda Olson. Linda has a brand-new book that demonstrates how to use the discipline of storytelling to, as stated in the subtitle, Empower Your Hope When Going Through Tough Times. As I was chatting with Linda earlier this week, I came to the realization that there is a huge difference between your “stories” and your “STORY.” In our previous podcasts with Linda we talked primarily about developing tools necessary to tell your life “stories” in a lucid, yet concise manner. We will continue that a bit in this show, but today I'd like to talk about the value of your “life story” or your “narrative” and how that story impacts your life. This will be fun. Linda Olsen is a bestselling author, TEDx speaker and Founder of Wealth Through Stories. As former college dean, and marriage and family therapist Linda brings us deep knowledge of personal transformation through telling your own story. The collapse of the Champlain Towers has been a mysterious and important event in the real estate world, especially for the families deeply affected by the tragedy. It brought to light some of the essential things to note for environmentally-challenged properties; all buildings do degrade and are affected by the elements of nature. Our guest, Linda Olson is a REALTOR® and environment consultant in Florida. This episode focuses on how we can best advise our clients when they are purchasing condominium properties or properties in environmentally challenged areas. What can the rest of us learn from the tragedy in Surfside?   [2:55] Linda's background and what she does today as an environmentalist and REALTOR®.   [5:52] Building codes in Florida and the state's rules and regulations.   [11:13] Regulations differ from state to state, and even between the state and local levels. Most areas leave it up to the local governments to decide building codes, etc.   [15:00] Causes that contributed to the Champlain Tower collapse, and environmental factors that came into play specifically due to location.   [25:50] The difference in the inspection process between residential real estate and condo buildings.   [28:50] What REALTORS® can do to help their clients when they are purchasing a unit in a condo.   [33:13] A “condo checklist” that you could use with your clients so they have an idea of what types of things to check out before buying a property.   [38:12] Monica shares some information from Robert Norlund about the physical and financial health of a building and its homeowner's association, and a few of his tips for REALTORS®.   [42:05] Predictability in the natural wear and tear and degradation of properties and the life expectancy of buildings, and how appraisers use this when valuing a property.   [46:45] Upkeep and maintenance of apartments compared to a condo or townhouse   [49:20] REALTORS®' responsibility to educate our sellers and our buyers, to act as professionals, and to advise our clients of the concerns to be aware of, and what they should consider prior to closing on a property.   Tweetables:   “Even if there are building codes, when inspections are done by the local government, they are only looking to make sure that the building code standards have been met at a minimum. They don't inspect the quality of the work.” — Linda   “I think it's part of our responsibility as REALTORS® to be able to advise our clients as to things that may affect them before they purchase a property. If you don't take the time to learn how it can affect it, you don't have any advice or assistance that you can give your clients.” — Linda   “Deferred maintenance is a big deal. If we don't take care of things when they come up and replace them when appropriate, the building will go back to the Earth.” — Monica   Guest Links:   Linda Olson EducatorLinda.com   Robert Nordlund Reservestudy.com   NPR Article Npr.org/2021/07/19/1016940192/why-steady-low-condo-fees-should-…   Additional Links:   Crdpodcast.com Onlinelearning.realtor for NAR Online Education Training4RE.com — List of Classroom Courses from NAR and its affiliates   Questions? re-Post of Thursday 3/18/21 Linda K Olson shares her incredible story, becoming a triple amputee at 29, how she overcame, then being diagnosed with Parkinson's at 65 and how she stays positive! Her website https://lindakolson.com/ Book review by Affinity magazine Gone: A Memoir of Love, Body, and Taking Back My Life is a memoir by triple-amputee Linda Olson. While, admittedly, memoir isn't my genre of choice, Olson's story was incredible and enticing. From the first page, I was drawn into Olson's narrative and consumed the rest of the book quickly thereafter. Olson is witty, honest, and resilient. She bars no details about her incredible recovery: every detail of Olson's miraculous story is conveyed through Gone. She doesn't ask for pity, in fact, she repeatedly infuses humor into her situation in an attempt to make both the reader and her family laugh! Gone was a wholly enjoyable and inspiring read for me, especially at a time when reflection and perspective are necessary.

At age 29, Linda Olson was strapped inside a van that stalled on a railroad track. A train hit the van and she went on to live her very full life as a mother, radiologist, and triple amputee. At 71, she has published her first book, a memoir called  GONE (https://amzn.to/2TQf85q), and is newly diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease.  After the train accident, she says, “I had a choice to make: Do I want to be happy or not?” There were people standing at the end of her hospital bed unable to look her in the eye when she decided “I want to make them happy and so I focused on their mental attitudes.  It worked. They put me in a wheelchair, I went out to the garden and started making lists of what I am going to do when I got back home.” Growing up, Linda’s mother would post a list of her daily required activities on her door and the focus—both then and after the accident-- helped her get through each day feeling accomplished. “I still have the lists [I made that day],” she says. “They got me back into rehab and after four months I walked a mile with my prosthetic legs.” Today she is still pushing the boundaries of her physical abilities. “After 41 years there are new things I have to figure out,” she says, "—like filing my nails with one hand.” Her husband used to do it for her, but just the other day, Linda says she designed a way to do it herself. “It’s about accepting, adapting, innovating. Make a game of it, “ she says.

At the time of her accident, Linda Olson, author of Gone: A Memoir of Love, Body, and Taking Back My Life, had it all. She and her husband were both young doctors traveling through Germany when a train hit their van in an accident that shattered their lives—and Linda's body—forever. Now, as a triple amputee, Linda opens up about the pact her and her husband made when they were first reunited in the hospital and why the family secret they kept for 35-years was an important part of why their lives turned out so well. She talks about dropping the blame game and never looking back at "what-if," using humor to make others comfortable with her disability, why initiating contact with a single word—hello—kept her from being left behind in her new life and how a recent Parkison's diagnosis is daring her, once again, to overcome limitations through a mindset of innovation. To connect with Linda, visit her:Website: www.lindakolson.comAmazon: Gone: A Memoir of Love, Body, and Taking Back My Life—Work with Chelsea: www.breakupward.com/shopChelsea’s website: www.breakupward.comInstagram: www.instagram.com/thankyouheartbreakEmail: Chelsea@breakupward.com

At age twenty-nine, Linda Olson, M.D. FACR was vacationing with her husband in Germany when their van was hit by a train, shattering their lives as well as her body. “I didn’t marry your arms or your legs. If you can do it, I can do it,” was the first thing her husband said to her in the hospital after she woke up as a triple amputee in 1979. In her courageous new release GONE: A Memoir of Love, Body, and Taking Back My Life (on sale October 27, She Writes Press), Olson shares the inspiring true story about how she learned to walk with prostheses, change diapers and insert IVs with one hand. Despite challenges, Olson pursued an illustrious thirty-year career as an award-winning Professor of Radiology at UCSD and raised two children to canoe, backpack, kayak and travel in remote places. One of Parade magazine’s best memoirs of 2020, GONE is part medical-survivor memoir, part marriage guide and parenting confessional, and part travel blog, asking readers to find not only courage but also laughter in the unexpected adversities we all face. Diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2015, Olson is now a motivational speaker committed to empowering patients and families to live life as full as possible via her “Get Out and Go” message. A worthy addition to anyone’s list of amazing memoirs. I can recommend it highly for anyone who needs a lesson in the power of positive thinking.” ―Readers Lane

What’s next? None of us knows what’s going to happen, and life requires constant learning and adaptation, says Linda Olson, Motivational Speaker, Author, and Triple Amputee. Rather than being bothered by this uncertainty, we can prepare for change and then accept, adapt and innovate when it happens. Linda knows about adapting to change. When she and her husband, Dave, were vacationing in Germany, a train hit their vehicle, leaving Linda a triple amputee. Determined not to be a victim, Linda was motivated to maintain her independence and to be of service as a doctor. Following a 30-year career as a radiologist, Linda has now written a memoir, Gone: A Memoir of Love, Body, and Taking Back My Life, which will be published this October. The key themes in her story are resilience, hope, and taking control. At the heart of her memoir is a love story between Linda and Dave, and their enduring commitment to each other. REPEAT SHOW, SCAN 2175 -- Tonight's special guest is Dr Linda Olson from Atlanta, Georgia. She grew up with childhood domestic violence (CDV) and, for over 30 years, has been a licensed clinical psychologist and a CDV victim advocate, specializing in helping women, children, couples, and families who witnessed domestic violence heal from anxiety, depression, and trauma. CDV, the impact experienced by children who grow up in a household where there is domestic violence, is a devastating crisis that affects one billion people around the globe and, at the same time, is an issue that is rarely mentioned by the news media. This tragic “well-kept secret” affects one out of every 7 people in the U.S. Young children exposed to domestic violence suffer the same kind of trauma as PTSD experienced by military veterans – a trauma that research has found literally “rewires” their brain, with a destructive and lasting impact. “These kids really have lost their childhood,” Linda says. “And the saddest part is they don't understand why they are so fearful, lack confidence and feel so guilty. I love teaching my patients the skills and tools that can undo these years of damage.” Linda is also the founder of Project Hope Bear, a Trauma, Grief and Loss Teddy Bear program, to bring hope, comfort and healing to children and families who witnessed violence between parents or caregivers or lost a loved one to violence. Teddy bears reduce a sense of loneliness and anxiety in children who have experienced trauma, loss, and grief. Socially isolated children benefit from touching and holding a teddy bear and express more positive emotions. Linda is hoping to bring “Project Hope Bear” to children throughout the U.S.

What is the difference between a love story and a romance? Which do you prefer?  We sat down at the Bryant Corner Café to talk about love. Valentines Day had everyone thinking about it, but we got into a pretty substantive discussion about the difference between love stories and romances.  Finally, different kinds of love, between different people emerge as our main theme.  Nancy started out, however, by calling our attention to a recently published novel she found remarkable by an author she follows.“A God In Every Stone,” by Kamila Shamsie, is the story of a young English woman who goes on an archeological dig in what would become Pakistan just before WW1 just breaks out. Nancy says, “What we get in this wonderful, wonderful novel is a perspective on WW1 from the Indian soldiers who went to fight for the British and died in great numbers.”  It is also a story of the beginnings of the fight for independence on the sub-continent.  She says it opens up a period of history as only fiction can, bringing new insights and revealing the roots of our present turmoil in the struggles of the past.  It is a challenging book for the way the story is told and for the subject matter, but she says it fabulous. Here are the books we talked about. Some are romances. Most are love stories. What do you think, what is the difference? “Gone With The Wind,” by Margaret Mitchell“Romeo and Juliet,” by William Shakespeare“Soulless” by Gail Carriger, a romance about a young woman who is rudely attacked by a vampire. Nancy loved it. “Astrid and Veronika,” by Linda Olson.  Sharon says two women, one young, one old, share a love, but not a sexual love.“Me Before You,” by JoJo Moyes. A young woman takes care of a wheel-chair bound man.  Nancy loved it because JoJo Moyes doesn’t give into the easy way out andturned what mighthave beenaromance into a love story.“Plainsong,” by Ken Haruf a love story between two old men and the young girl they care for.“Dancing Alone Without Music” by Larry Gildersleeve, who is a friend of Jenny’s. She says it’s an evolution of different loves.Diana Galbadon’s long and involved books. “Life After Life” by Kate Atkinson. Judy says it is about love within a family.“Boys In The Boat,” by Daniel James Brown.  Judy said that what amazed her was the love of Mr. Pocock for the boats themselves and the young men in the boat. So now, when defined so broadly, what book isn’t a love story? “Angle of Repose,” by Wallace Stegner, in which Nancy asks, who loves whom? ( well, she said “who loves who,” but you know how autocorrect can be.)  Another love story by this definition can be Stegner’s “Crossing to Safety.”“Still Alice,” by Lisa Genova“Cocoon of Cancer” An Invitation to Love Deeply,” by Abbe Rolnick with Jim Wiggins“Chocolat,” by Joanne Harris is Roz’s choice. That prompts Nancy to plug her other books, which she says don’t get the attention they deserve. She recommends “Gentlemen and Players.”“Like Water For Chocolate,” by Laura Esquivel“Bettyville,” by George Hodgman is the story of a son who leaves his life to take care of his 90 year old mother.  Susie says it is funny and delightful.“Cold Mountain,” by Charles Fraser“Atonement,” by Ian McEwan“Love In The Time of Cholera,” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez“Love Again,” by Doris Lessing. Not about romantic or erotic love,  but about the trembling between them says Elwyn. He also loves the episode in Tom Sawyer where he explores his passion of Becky Thatcher.“Infinity in the Palm of Her Hand,” by Giaconda Belli“Middlemarch,” by George EliotWrapping, we had shout outs for Louise Penny’s Inspector Gamache mysteries, Dorothy Sayers’ romance between Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane and to get into the western genre, “Shane,” by Jack Shaefer about the love of a young boy for his father and the man who rides in to help.“Bridges of Madison County,” by Robert Waller, or “Fanny Hill,” by John Cleland, but now we are getting pretty far afield from love or even romance. These are but insubstantial flings, aren’t they?
