Doc Searls, Dan Lynch, and Jonathan Bennett talk about what happens when open source companies get too big for the licenses that helped them get there, and how their communities are dealing with that. Red Hat recently changed its source code distribution rules, prompting other vendors like Oracle, SUSE, and CIQ to form the Open Enterprise Linux Association in response. What are the implications of these changes, and do Red Hat's actions violate the GPL?

Now.. whether you can get it still depends on your insurance, your doctor – a new prescription is needed – and the availability at your pharmacy. Whether you want to get it may depend on if you use a compatible pump system – the G7 will NOT work with Tandem's CIQ or Omnipod 5 for several more months. Mounting evidence suggests Covid-19 infections are tied to a new diagnosis of diabetes, though it's not clear whether this relationship is a coincidence or cause-and-effect. Big study here, 23,000 adults who'd had Covid-19 at least once. The raw data showed that people who'd had Covid-19 had higher risks of being diagnosed with diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure after their infections. But when the researchers adjusted those numbers to account for the benchmark diagnosis, only the risk of diabetes remained significantly elevated. Covid-19 increased the odds of a new diabetes diagnosis by an average of about 58%. The new study is notable because it adds recent data, said Wander, who was not involved in the research. It also used strategies to try to address shifts in health care during the pandemic. Another strength of the study was that it included people who were diagnosed between March 2020 and June 2022, so it was able to estimate the risk even after the Omicron variant swept through the US. https://www.cnn.com/2023/02/14/health/covid-diabetes-risk-study/index.html XX Insulet making a couple of interesting acquisitions.. $25 million in assets from Automated Glucose Control LLC in California. And the same amount $25 million of assets from Bigfoot Biomedical. AGC and Insulet have had a partnership since 2016 which mostly involved the algorithm that led to Omnipod 5. Bigfoot has also claimed patents regarding more hands-off insulin delivery, The acquisition effectively doubles Insulet's IP portfolio, Eric Benjamin, the company's executive VP of innovation, strategy and digital products, said in a press release. XX Dr. Halis Akturk and colleagues began noticing patterns among people with T1D in Colorado hospital emergency departments (ED) after cannabis was legalized in the state. They have since conducted several nationwide retrospective studies on those living with T1D that also use cannabis, including hospitalization records and T1D Exchange Registry participant surveys. They found that T1D participants had repeated return visits to the ED in the following weeks, and DKA was frequently misdiagnosed. Based on that research, Dr. Akturk's team has recently developed a key to differentiating between DKA and a new syndrome that mimics DKA, one they've named HK-CHS: Hyperglycemic Ketosis-Cannabis Hyperemesis Syndrome. To treat HK-CHS, your care team will typically increase fluids, treat the high blood glucose with insulin, and balance your electrolytes, or anion gap. You will be advised to stop using cannabis until the symptoms resolve. These treatments will bring your blood glucose levels back into target range and get your gut moving again, which will ease the nausea and vomiting. Depending on your dose, frequency, and duration of use, symptoms may take several days to several weeks to resolve. https://t1dexchange.org/cannabis-t1d-risks/ XX About two thirds of people with type 1 diabetes in the United States have overweight or obesity, nearly the same proportion as Americans without diabetes, new nationwide survey data suggest. What's more, among people with overweight or obesity, those with type 1 diabetes are less likely to receive lifestyle recommendations from healthcare professionals than those with type 2 diabetes, and are less likely to actually engage in lifestyle weight management activities than others with overweight or obesity, with or without type 2 diabetes. "the lack of evidence for safe, effective methods of diet- and exercise-based weight control in people with type 1 diabetes may be keeping doctors from recommending such methods," these researchers say. "Large clinical trials have been done in type 2 diabetes patients to establish guidelines for diet- and exercise-based weight management, and we now need something similar for type 1 diabetes patients." https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/988199 XX New research showing men and women have different risk factors when it comes to type 2 diabetes. In healthy women, low serum level of the adipose tissue protein adiponectin was an independent strong predictor of type 2 diabetes and prediabetes in the future. In healthy men, instead, low serum level of the liver protein IGFBP-1, was an independent strong predictor of type 2 diabetes and prediabetes This means that these proteins, which are measures of insulin sensitivity in adipose tissue (adiponectin) and liver and muscle (IGFBP-1), can predict whether one has a high risk of getting type 2 diabetes in 10 years. A previous study performed in Shanghai in 2016 showed gender differences in the same direction. In men with prediabetes the risk of future type 2 diabetes was significantly reduced if they increased their physical activity and muscle mass . In contrast, the same study showed that women with prediabetes must avoid increasing waist circumference and abdominal obesity or reducing large waist circumference to prevent type 2 diabetes. https://medicalxpress.com/news/2023-02-women-men-shown-factors-diabetes.html XX Tempramed/ VIVI Cap XX XX 2023 Diabetes Scholars applications are now open! The platform is open to both adults and children with T1D living in the U.S. Personal information remains confidential and participation is fully voluntary. Once enrolled, participants will complete annual surveys and have the opportunity to sign up for other studies on specific topics related to T1D. The registry aims to improve knowledge of T1D, accelerate the discovery and development of new treatments and technologies, and generate evidence to support policy or insurance changes that help the T1D community. By sharing opinions, experiences and data, patients can help advance meaningful T1D treatment, care and policy.

I'm Stacey Simms and these are the top diabetes stories and headlines of the past seven days. As always, I'm going to link up my sources in the Facebook comments – where we are live – we are also Live on YouTube and in the show notes at d-c dot com when this airs as a podcast.. XX In the News is brought to you by The World's Worst Diabetes Mom, Real life stories of raising a child with diabetes. Available in paperback, on Kindle or as an audio book – all at Amazon.com -- XX Our top story, evidence that SGLT-2 inhibitors can help kidney and heart health in people with type 1. These are diabetes drugs that are already shown to lower blood sugar levels – they have brand names like Invokana and Jardiance – but they are not approved for T1D in the United States. The problem is that they can lead to DKA even with normal glucose levels. However, they are approved in Europe and many advocates say they can be used safely if people no to monitor closely. https://www.news-medical.net/news/20211107/Study-examines-benefits-of-SGLT2-inhibitors-in-individuals-with-type-1-diabetes.aspx XX Some tidbits in Tandem's third quarter investment call last week. CEO John Sheridan says they plan to ask the US FDA this year to approve Control IQ down to age 2 – right now it's only approved to age six. Also asking for expanded labeling for people with type 2. Mobile bolus or bolus by phone still out there waiting for approval – Sheridan says the FDA last asked them any questions in August. He says they have three initiatives for 2022: filing for the Tsport pump, integrating the upcoming Dexcom G7 and moving ahead with their partnership with Abbott's Libre. Sheridan thinks it'll be a matter of a few months before Tandem pumps integrate the G7 saying, “When it comes to Dexcom, we've integrated three generations of their sensors already. We're on the fourth. We know how to do this” I hadn't heard this, but Sheridan says the Libre had a bit of a hiccup with the FDA approving it as an iCGM, that's a newer designation… because taking vitamin C can throw the readings off.. but he believes they've addressed that. We'll follow up. https://www.fool.com/earnings/call-transcripts/2021/11/03/tandem-diabetes-care-inc-tndm-q3-2021-earnings-cal/ XX Insulet also had their quarterly call – CEO Shacey Petrovic says she's still optimistic about Omnipod 5 being approved this year.. she says they've had a lot of back and forth with the FDA in the last few months and that's what makes her more confident. Other tidbits.. Omnipod reports that 80% of their customers were previously on multiple daily injections only .. no prior pump experience. They think when Omnipod 5 comes out there will be more competitive switchers from other pumps. They reiterated that it will be a limited release when approval comes with a gradual rollout in the US. https://www.fool.com/earnings/call-transcripts/2021/11/04/insulet-corporation-podd-q3-2021-earnings-call-tra/ XX Really interesting news about some children in the US with type 1 during the pandemic – they had more time in range and lower A1Cs during the first year of the pandemic compared to the year before.  They also saw their doctors more, even though 90-percents of the visits were virtual. This was a group of kids ages 1-17 all of whom use a CGM. The researchers say they want to take a closer look to try to figure out why this was the case: speculation ranges from more oversight from parents to flexibility in schedules. I can say this definitely happened in my house.. however I'll also throw in that my son started on his first hybrid closed loop system in Jan 2020 just before the pandemic– Tandem's CIQ - and that made a huge difference, especially when we were stuck at home and he was eating at 2am. They don't mention the insulin delivery system here.. just that every kid had a CGM. https://www.healio.com/news/endocrinology/20211108/metrics-improve-for-us-children-with-type-1-diabetes-using-cgm-in-first-year-of-covid19 XX Something called sleep-disordered breathing may play a role in gestational diabetes and insulin resistance. There isn't a lot of research here.. This study looked at women who had risk factors for obstructive sleep apnea, a form of sleep disordered breathing that has been linked with high blood pressure, heart disease, and Alzheimers. The data suggests those with it may enter pregnancy at higher risk for gestational diabetes and recommend more screening. They added further investigation is needed to see if treating the breathing issue in early pregnancy could improve glucose levels. https://www.contemporaryobgyn.net/view/women-with-sleep-disordered-breathing-linked-to-insulin-resistance-and-gestational-diabetes-risk XX Fun story in football this week: Mark Andrews and Blake Ferguson will face each other in the big Thursday night NFL game. Andrews is with the Baltimore Ravens, Ferguson plays for the Miami Dolphins. They both live with type 1.  It's thought this is the first time two NFL players with T1D have faced each other. They each use Tandem pumps, btw, so expect to see some posts from that company promoting the game. XX Big grant for Beyond Type 1's DKA Awareness Campaign. The Helmsley Charitable Trust is giving them more than $300-thousand dollars for their grassroots messaging movement. This provides posters to schools and communities and sends literature to pediatricians. Almost 50%  patients under the age of 18 in the U.S. are in DKA when diagnosed with Type 1. https://beyondtype1.org/beyond-type-1-receives-300985-helmsley-charitable-trust-grant-for-dka-awareness-campaign/ XX Lots of good stuff happening for Diabetes Awareness Month.. Dexcom is partnering with Nick Jonas and Patti LaBelle… they say to help the diabetes community feel seen and heard, while  advocating for improved access to diabetes care. Nick Jonas has been sharing people living with diabetes on Instagram and that's been really fun to see. Patti LaBelle lives with type 2.  She spoke to Congress earlier this month to talk about better access for people with Type 2 diabetes, especially in communities of color. XX Great round up of this kind of stuff – what the big organizations are doing for Diabetes Awareness Month over at Diabetes Mine.. I'll link that up in the show notes; https://www.healthline.com/diabetesmine/diabetes-awareness-month-2021#dexcom XX quick reminder that the podcast this week is our first ever tech roundtable. Really great discussion with two guys who follow this stuff very closely – Kamil Armacki better known as Nerdabetic and Chris Wilson. We go through everything in front of the USA FDA, some stuff that's approved in Europe and talk about what's coming next. you can listen to wherever you get your podcasts or if you're listening to this as on a podcast app, just go back an episode. Next week: holiday help – ask the Dmoms is back to help you through what can be a stressful time of year. That's In the News for this week.. if you like it, please share it! Thanks for joining me! See you back here soon.

Episode transcript and links below: Click here for iPhone      Click here for Android   Hi, I’m Stacey Simms, the host of Diabetes Connections, a weekly podcast providing info & inspiration with a focus on people who use insulin. This is “In the news..” a new, short newscast full of the top diabetes news of the past week. The goal here is to get you up to speed – quickly – with good info. XX And let’s not forget.. Diabetes Connections In the News is brought to you by Inside the Breakthrough. A new history of science podcast full of “Did You Know Stuff” Let’s jump in! In The News… XX Novo Nordisk is voluntarily recalling nearly 15-hundred product samples because they were stored at the wrong temperature. This recall is only for product samples – NOT for the insulin you get at pharmacies or mail-order services. But it does cover Levemir®, Tresiba®, Fiasp®, Novolog® and Xultophy (ZUL-ti-fye like multiply). We’ll have a link in the show notes with all the info, batch and lot numbers to look for. Side note we just got Tresiba samples for the first time from my son’s endo. So good timing there!. You should receive a notice from your doctor if you have any of this insulin, but there’s a phone number to call and a way to report to the FDA as well. Again, link in the comments here on FB and in the show notes if you’re listening to the podcast. Insulin sample recall: https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/novo-nordisk-issues-voluntary-nationwide-recall-of-levemir-tresiba-fiasp-novolog-and-xultophy-product-samples-due-to-improper-storage-temperature-conditions-301286839.html XX Bigfoot Biomedical gets FDA approval for it’s Unity Diabetes Management System. This is a connected pen system – where the insulin pens, both long and short acting, take data from a Libre 2 continuous glucose monitor and give insulin dosing instructions. You’ll get current glucose numbers as well as any recommended correction doses. The system also provides reminders for the long acting pen and provides low  notifications. The unity system was cleared for people 12 and older with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. Bigfoot was founded in 2014 to create a commercial version of an existing DIY hybrid closed loop pump system. That is still in the works, under the Autonomy label. We’re working on talking to Bigfoot in the next week or so to catch up. Bigfoot Unity FDA approved https://www.mobihealthnews.com/news/fda-greenlights-bigfoot-biomedicals-insulin-recommending-diabetes-management-system   https://www.ajmc.com/view/diabetes-in-the-news-pregnancy-and-diabetes-dementia-risk-pediatric-ketoacidosis   https://www.bizjournals.com/triad/news/2021/04/22/vtv-wins-fda-designation-for-diabetes-therapy.html XX After nearly a century, BD is spinning off its diabetes care business. The split is expected to be completed in the first half of 2022, after which the segment will become a completely separate, publicly traded company, tentatively dubbed "NewCo." BD spins off: https://www.fiercebiotech.com/medtech/bd-to-spin-off-diabetes-care-business-into-newco-a-standalone-public-company XX New deal for Eli Lilly and four diabetes management companies – integrating the not yet released Tempo Pen and Tempo Smart Button products. The companies that signed with Lilly here are Dexcom, Glooko, myDiabby Healthcare and Roche’s MySugr. myDiabby is French and I’m sure I’ve pronounced it wrong. These agreements are all about integrating with software platforms and allow for the collection and sharing of personal health data. Lilly agreement with 4 diabetes companies: https://www.mobihealthnews.com/news/focused-diabetes-eli-lilly-inks-integration-deals-roche-dexcom-glooko-and-more XX Tandem’s latest earning call in just a moment but first.. quick break – want to tell you about one of our great sponsors who helps make Diabetes Connections possible. Inside the Breakthrough explores the idea of a “Eureka” moment. It’s historical wisdom mixed with modern insight – a little bit history show, little bit science show. The latest episode tells the story of Dr. Banting and the discovery of insulin. Every week is a different story – they’ve talked about snake oil and leaded gasoline & crime – but this week has info about the discovery of insulin that I’d never heard.. Banting had to sell his car to get money to buy dogfood. And of course, there’s scientific info as well. Listen to Inside the Breakthrough wherever you listen to podcasts.. XX Back to the news.. Tandem diabetes had it’s first quarter earnings call last week. Several highlights: They have submitted a couple of new features to the FDA and are waiting on approval. First, still waiting for an update to the Control IQ algorithm to allow for more personalization Second is the mobile bolus or what I call bolus by phone. They got some response from the FDA in March but this, like many projects, is delayed because of COVID. IN THIS EPISODE: Today were going to discuss one of my favorite topics which is neuroscience and the study of the brain!  About 20 years ago I was introduced to neuroscience through the lens of how it applied to coaching, training and leadership development. This understanding of neuroscience instantly gave me a context for why a particular development approach worked well and why another didn’t. I found that when the approach sync’d with how the brain works it was successful, when it ran counter it almost always failed. It changed the way I trained and coached. And ever since, I’m always on the lookout to increase my knowledge and understanding of neuroscience.  Needless to say, I was really intrigued when I heard a friend use the phrase “brain myths” during a conversation. Ooh, tell me more!  So let me step back a bit for a minute and tell you about my friend. Jess Walcott is an assistant professor at Bucks County Community College where she teaches neuroscience and biology. Her undergraduate work at Bryn Mawr College was in chemistry and psychology but she then went on to complete a Ph.D. in neuropharmacology at the University of Pennsylvania. After graduation, Jess began a career as a medical writer working on regulatory submissions for new drugs and writing publications in scientific journals which she found more gratifying that running her own experiments. On a lark, she began teaching biology at Bucks and realized this was WAY more engaging than sitting at a computer analyzing patient data. These days her focus is completely on teaching where she concentrates on boosting scientific literacy and getting messy doing real experiments.  Back to brain myths.   As as a fun and  interesting way of pulling together the learning for her students at the end of the semester, Jess challenges them to identify a myth about the brain and then explain why it’s not true. There are many beliefs about the brain that we commonly believe are true, when in fact they’re not. What are we talking about here? You know things like there are left-brained and right-brained people. That the brain works like a computer. Another one is very common is the belief that we only use 10% of our brains. Of course a favorite of mine, and apparently of Jess’ students is the myth that drinking alcohol can kill brain cells.  Jess and I sat down to discuss these brain myths and others and to get into some of the science that underlies these fallacies and if there are parts of them that might in fact be a little bit true. ABOUT OUR GUEST: Jess is an adjunct professor at Bucks County Community College where she gets to learn along with her students in neuroscience and biology. Although she majored in chemistry and psychology for her undergraduate work at Bryn Mawr College, she studied neurodegeneration in an inherited form of muscular atrophy to complete her Ph.D. in neuropharmacology at the University of Pennsylvania. Outside of the classroom, Jess serves on the board of directors for a residential summer camp and volunteers at an organic farm. Jess also has two boys who provide her with countless opportunities to marvel at the wonders of the developing brain. These biases impact how each of us view the world, our decision making processes and how we interact with others. The impact of bias is felt everywhere - in the workplace, the classroom, and in our larger society. Unfortunately, we’re often unaware of our biases, hence the term “unconscious bias”.  But what can we do about unconscious bias - after all, it’s unconscious, right? On the surface it might seem hopeless but luckily, there are strategies to manage unconscious bias and its impacts. To explore the options and opportunities, I asked an expert in unconscious bias to join us on today’s podcast. ABOUT OUR GUEST: Glenda Gracia-Rivera is the Director of Professional Development and Training at the Center for Women & Work, Rutgers University. Glenda’s work focuses on issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion in education and corporate industries through professional development, leadership training, curriculum development, student programming, and provision of technical assistance. She is a member of the Board of Trustees of Mercer Street Friends in Trenton and serves as the Chairperson for their Governance Committee. The most recent Gallup survey shows 34% of US workers are engaged, tying the highest results in the survey's history, while “actively disengaged” is down to 13%, a new low. However, it still means 66% of US workers are not engaged at some level. We know engagement is highly correlated with positive business outcomes so even though the numbers are up, there's still a lot of work to be done. To explore the topic of engagement, I invited a professional colleague of mine, Rich McLaughlin, to join us on the podcast. ABOUT OUR GUEST: Rich has been an observer and practitioner of innovation and employee engagement processes for over 20 years. He has over 13,000 hours designing and facilitating leadership and interpersonal skills workshops, and innovation explorations with teams to help them jump start their change and innovation efforts. He has helped teams as small as 8 and departments as large as 100 learn how to blend external developments (to understand where customer needs are moving) with internal employee engagement processes (to show how to stimulate internal experiments and capitalize on those opportunities). Rich also enjoys helping leaders grow by focusing more on people skills and less on technical ones. He brings an experiential approach in his work with client teams. His client's value the engaging way he works with their people whether facilitating a leadership workshop, working with a specific team, or challenging employees to be more accountable for the whole. Rich spent time learning about instructional design and change management at Accenture, helped Square D Company develop and implement their TQM programs and processes and developed the leadership curriculum and internal consulting practice at Baxter Healthcare during his time as an internal OD practitioner. The last 8 years of his practice he has been following the intersection of Innovation and Design Thinking. You’d have a rich and diverse collection of opinions and advice, but getting a hold of all those people might be a bit difficult.  We are lucky that today's guest, Dr. Terry M. Christensen, is all of those things. There are few people who have had careers with the wide ranging and multidisciplinary experiences that Terry has had. From his life-long love of football and wrestling both as a player and a coach, his time as a merchant marine captain, the loss of eyesight that reignited his academic career, his non-profit board service and his battle with cancer. Terry has done it all. And it’s given him some unique perspectives on the topic of mentoring and the value of passing wisdom along to the next generation.   ABOUT OUR GUEST: From an early background in commercial fishing, Terry transitioned to the ocean-towing industry. In 1981, he earned a Merchant Marine Deck Officers License and continued his professional advancement with the vast majority of his merchant sea service being spent in Alaskan waters.   From 1985-1988, Terry served as Chief Instructor of the U.S. Department of Labor Seamanship training program at Tongue Point Job Corps Center in Astoria, Oregon. He also served as Master of the Training Vessels INLAND CHIEFand BIG ED. In 1988, he returned to sea as a deck officer in the ocean towing and salvage trade. In 1990, Terry joined the Maritime Science Department at Clatsop Community College and became one of a select group of maritime instructors across the nation, who were authorized by the U.S. Coast Guard to prepare and administer professional examinations for Merchant Marine personnel.   In 1994, Terry developed a degenerative disease of the optic nerve. The consequent loss of functional vision precipitated a change in career and he began the process of establishing the academic credentials that would allow him to return to teaching.  He earned MS and PhD degrees in the History of Science from Oregon State University and has published several academic papers. Terry continues to volunteer as a coach in the wrestling and football programs at The George School in Newtown, PA. He also has served on the boards of several non-profit organizations including: The Peace Center, the Alumni Association of Guide Dogs for the Blind, Yardley Friends Meeting, and Friends Home and Village.   SHOW NOTES: To connect with Terry on LinkedIn: click here   INSIGHT AT WORK PODCAST THEME MUSIC: Our theme music is composed by Chris Lucca, Jr.. IN THIS EPISODE: Networking is a misunderstood activity, and is often associated only with job search. But it’s much more than that.   Done well, networking can of course help you land a job, but it can also expand your circle of professional contacts, be a source of referrals, or perhaps allow you to find a mentor or even a friend. However, done wrong, it can be a painful and awkward series of one-way interactions that not only won’t help you succeed but may cause people to run in the opposite direction. Today’s guest is Jerome Laday, a master networker who has been successfully networking for over 25 years. In that time he’s learned a lot about how to do things right and how to avoid the pitfalls that can derail your efforts.  He’ll share a simple plan of how to get started networking including: How to begin with the right approach & mindset Key Do’s and Don’ts Steps for effective follow-up after the first interaction How to avoid “dive bomb” networking Building relationships instead of having a transactional approach How to handle the emotional roller-coaster when you’re networking and also in job search mode Understanding the spirit of how to network – that it is more about giving than receiving. And most important guiding principle of all: “Networking is not just for Not-working” ABOUT OUR GUEST: Of course, Jerome's done a lot more than just network over the last 25 years. He has worked as an Human Resources professional for some of the top companies in manufacturing and pharmaceuticals. He is a holder of both SPHR and SHRM-SCP certifications, which are the highest possible in the world of human resources. He has been active in several professional associations and is one of the founding members of the Whine & Dine Networking Group. She says we need to move to much deeper, richer conversations, which she calls going from transactional to co-creational. Judith is influenced by a number of leaders and you can find out more about her work, like the concept of C-IQ by visiting Conversationalintelligence.com. She advises us to “listen to connect not judge or reject.” The key is to learn how to pull the right information from people and not push them away. This style of listening shifts the chemistry in our brains and moves to an open space for greater communication. Don’t miss what she says about language. Listen to how she truly believes in living outside-of-the-box and not being bound by others. This isn’t the first time that a leader told us that they wanted to be able to fly. Check it out. She talks about listening to herself and trusting her gut. Don’t miss what she says about instinct.   She talks about the rhythm of the universe and the bond we all have with one other. Fascinating. Don’t miss it. Judith’s interview is filled with practical advice for leaders, and it really hits home on something we do everyday--communicate--but that we need to do better as leaders. Her ideas helps develop leaders by getting to simple with speaking and listening in a more profound way. Be sure to get your copy of her book, Conversational Intelligence: How Great Leaders Build Trust and Get Extraordinary Results, and let us know what you think. Please follow, like, and comment; it really helps. Use #onethingseries and #SH302 so that we can find you. Joe & T.J.
