Patrick welcomes listeners with fresh thoughts on family struggles, sharing both supportive insights and caution when couples split and children are involved. He celebrates Taco Tuesday through a playful exchange on mariachi traditions, brings sharp humor to the immigration debate with satirical moments, and fields candid questions about Catholic teaching, mixed marriages, and faith journeys. Lyn (email) - In David’s children's mind, it is a "divorce". Same consequences and sadness for children especially if the father remarries. He should try and reconcile w the mother for the children's sake. (00:44) Daniel - Do you have a 'grito'? That is the sound Mariachi's make. (03:01) Michelle - I think legal is legal is legal. We are a nation of laws. I think that is the bottom line. (05:41) Audio: Josh Seiter - Woke white liberal asked to vacate home for transnative man of color (13:31) Audio: Josh Seiter - Trans indigenous people for ICE (15:48) Steve (email) - I really enjoyed hearing different perspectives on the current situation surrounding illegal immigration and deportations. (19:59) Cathy (email) - Regarding the immigration debate and current political discussion, it seems that the term "racist" is used too loosely. Asking questions or posing an alternative opinion often comes with accusation of racism which is not necessarily true. Jim - I heard the Archbishop's speech and I understand what he is saying. I don't hold the same view. A family pitching a tent in our yard is the same as someone coming into our country without asking permission. (26:44) Maria - Is it ok to use crystal candles in my house? (31:58) Caden (email) - Can I assign a new godparent to my 5-year-old whose godparent wasn't actually eligible at the time of her baptism? (37:56) Chandler - I come from a big LDS (Mormon) family, and they are asking me about my faith. How do I approach the conversation when my family gets confrontational? (40:24) David - How long did Job's trial last in the Bible? (48:39) Carmel - I am an immigrant and I had to be vetted and was investigated in Ireland before coming here. I think this process should still be enacted. (49:42)

Steve Taylor (the one and only) checks in to discuss Sketch, his latest film production (in conjunction with writer Seth Worley and starring actor Tony Hale). We also touch on Steve's musical career including his classic "Meltdown (At Madame Tussaud's)", artists he has written for/produced, and the influence of his dad and mom. Tim grew up loving Steve's brand of alternative/punk rock--full of energy & witty lyrics, packed with meaning and way ahead of their time--frequently tackling difficult subjects head-on, challenging people (often the within the church) without making himself the center of attention, if such a thing is possible. Examples include "I Want To Be A Clone," "(We Don't Need No) Color Code," "Lifeboat," "I Blew Up The Clinic Real Good," "What Is The Measure of Your Success?," and "Bannerman," among a trove of others. Taylor also directed many music videos for his songs (and other artists) and wrote/collaborated with a number of artists including newsboys. As a record label executive, he was very involved with Chevelle, Leigh Bingham Nash & Sixpence None The Richer (including their worldwide smash "Kiss Me", Burlap to Cashmere & L.A. Symphony. Taylor has also performed in other bands including Chagall Guevara, and invested years of his life as a filmmaker including "The Second Chance" (with Rev Jeff Obafemi Carr & Michael W. Smith) and with "Blue Like Jazz," an adaption of Donald Miller's book. On this week's episode of the District 3 Podcast, hosts Irvin, Miggs, and Elena sit down with one of the most intriguing young artists emerging from the scene right now — JP. At only 18 years old, JP is already redefining what it means to be a versatile performer. After spending the last few years mastering the traditional world of Mariachi, he's now stepping boldly into a new era of his artistry: a smooth, soulful lane inspired by the timeless swagger of legends like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and the entire golden-age crooner era.In this episode, JP opens up about the moment he realized he wanted to switch genres, the challenges of reinventing himself at such a young age, and how his cultural roots still influence his sound today. The hosts dig into his creative process, the risks he's taking, and the vision behind his fresh new approach to music.JP also breaks down the making of his debut single, “SUFFERING,” a track that marks his official leap into his solo career. It's emotional, atmospheric, and showcases a side of him that fans haven't heard before — and it's out now on all streaming platforms.Tap in for an episode full of laughs, inspiration, behind-the-scenes stories, and a look at an artist who's just getting started but already moving with star-level intention. This is one you don't want to miss.
This week on Friends Talking Nerdy, Professor Aubrey and Tim the Nerd dust off the record player and go head-to-head once again in The Musicwed Game — the game where friendship meets finely tuned musical instincts. Each picks five songs they believe the other will love, and whoever racks up the most correct guesses earns bragging rights as the reigning music whisperer. The playlist this round is as eclectic as ever — a sonic road trip through dusty border towns, cosmic dance floors, and smoky backroom stages. You'll hear talk of the swaggering “Canción del Mariachi” from Antonio Banderas and Los Lobos, the bittersweet twang of Glen Campbell's “Galveston,” and the glitter-soaked groove of Ace Frehley's “New York Groove.” From the haunting “This Mess We're In” (PJ Harvey featuring Thom Yorke) to the gospel fire of Sister Rosetta Tharpe's “Strange Things Happening Every Day,” every track sparks stories, laughter, and passionate debate.Rounding out the mix are Orville Peck's outlaw spin on “Born This Way (The Country Road Version),” the late-90s alt-pop gem “F.N.T.” by Semisonic, the heartfelt lift of Patty Griffin's “Top of the World,” the fiery “Malagueña Salerosa” by CHINGÓN, and the introspective “Just By Myself” from Greg Brown.Whether you're a die-hard music nerd or just love hearing two friends geek out with gusto, this episode hits all the right notes — nostalgia, discovery, and a few good-natured arguments about what makes a song perfectly Tim or undeniably Aubrey.

Happy Halloween! This North American tradition of dressing up for October has spread around the world and we on the Quackcast acknowledge that by dressing up and joining in with the fun! Us in costume will be in a freely viewable video to anyone that looks at our Patreon this week, you don't have to be paid subscribers. I am a skull-faced Mariachi because I have a great skull mask and a pretty awesome authentic tailored charro suit and wide sombrero, Tantz is a magical steampunk vampire in fantastic makeup, a vintage hat and gothic coat, and Banes is a creepy Pennywise screencap haha! See us here: https://www.patreon.com/DrunkDuck on our Patreon vid for this week! When I was a little kid growing up in Australia back in the day Halloween was this strange thing you ONLY saw on American TV shows, usually part of the storyline for seasonal episodes. When it started coming here I, like a lot of people, resisted it because it seemed like obnoxious cultural imperialism… but I've accepted it since because the dressing up part is obviously fun. In the Quackcast we chat about dressing up and some horror stuff. I watched both Scary Movie 1 and Scary Movie 2 for the cast to get into the feel of things. I had never seen them before! Despite being parody comedy movies I still found the killings in the first movie pretty disturbing most of the time and it just seemed like a normal horror movie in a lot of ways but with brighter lighting and dumber jokes (I actually found Heredity much funnier and less horrific). The second film was a much broader comedy, which was pretty silly in many ways but the jokes were also better done, especially the reconstructed skeleton scene. What are your fave horror comedies? And what will you dress up as for Halloween? This week Gunwallace has given us the musical theme to - Le French Ninja - This strikes me as saucy French take on the videogame inspired theme to Scott Pilgrim Vs The World. It has the sidescroller beat-em-up 8 bit feel, but it's cooler somehow, wearing a beret and a black turtleneck. This week on Stanford Hispanic Broadcasting, we're proud to feature an exclusive interview with Martha Rodríguez‑Salazar, curator of the San Francisco Symphony's annual Día de los Muertos celebration. Martha, a classically trained musician, educator, and cultural leader originally from Mexico City, has been the visionary behind this beloved event since 2008. Her deep commitment to community, tradition, and education shines through in every detail of the celebration — from the music to the vibrant lobby experiences that welcome families into the heart of this cultural ritual. This year's Día de los Muertos event takes place on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco. The focus is on children and interactivity — creating a space where families can connect with the meaning and magic of this tradition. Starting at 1:30 pm, the lobby of Davies Hall will transform into a colorful, immersive experience featuring altars created by local artists, face painting, sugar skull decorating, paper flower making, and even a Mariachi instrument “petting zoo.” It's an opportunity for young people to engage directly with the symbols, sounds, and spirit of Día de los Muertos. At 3:00 pm, the concert begins — a vibrant musical tribute under the [...]

Adrian Quesada is probably best known as one of the two co-founders of the psychedelic soul band Black Pumas, but the guitarist and producer has also been part of Grupo Fantasma, Brownout and Ocote Soul Sounds. Lately, he's also been pursuing another musical project called Boleros Psicodélicos, an homage to the phenomenon of balada music that blossomed throughout Latin America between the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. Balada is “a refined collision of bossa nova smoothness, Beatlesque psychedelia and torrid boleropathos” which “used art-pop instrumentation (mostly strings and harpsichords)”, and “employed songs about heartbreak and longing as a means to transport the listener to an opulent, cinematic fantasy world”, (Bandcamp). Quesada has recently released the second volume of these modern takes on vintage Latin pop sounds, all featuring some of the leading voices in modern Latin alternative music. Quesada, his band, and guest artists -L.A. singer and producer Angélica Garcia, Grammy-winning Puerto Rican singer-songwriter iLe (Ileana Cabra), and violinist and vocalist Mireya Ramos (of the all-female Mariachi band Flor de Toloache) – all perform in-studio. Set list: 1. Tus Tormentas with Mireya Ramos 2. No Juego with Angelica Garcia 3. Mentiras con Cariño with iLe

Jared Shavelson was raised in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, just outside of Philadelphia. His drumming journey stated early in life and got his first drumset at age seven. While playing in all of the local orchestras, marching bands, jazz bands, and theaters in southern New Jersey, he was taking weekly private lessons. During this time he was also starting to play out with his own bands, getting him heavily involved with the Philadelphia punk/hardcore scene. Leaving that area in 1999, he went to New York to attend college at SUNY Purchase studying jazz performance with greats like Ritchie Morales and Kim Plainfield. Jared completed 2 years at the Music Conservatory and left after his second year to start touring internationally with the Boston hardcore band The Hope Conspiracy. Soon after, he also began playing with the pop punk band None More Black, along with the political punk band Paint It Black. After living in New York City, Brooklyn, and Philadelphia, he now resides in Los Angeles where he started playing with more eclectic acts like Digital Daggers, Pure Love, The Rentals, The Aquabats, Meg Myers, Seal, Dark Waves, Cyn, Ways Away, Boysetsfire, Joyce Manor, The Bronx, Mariachi El Bronx, Chuck Ragan, Chase Atlantic, Ceremony, and many more.
