I initially interviewed Amanda Householder on June 10, 2020. During our conversation, she revealed that a staggering number of "troubled teen homes" existed across the United States.Despite purporting to assist at-risk youth, these facilities often functioned as unregulated prisons, particularly those with a faith-based orientation, enjoying even less oversight due to religious exemptions.Amanda detailed various forms of physical, sexual, and mental abuse, encompassing forced starvation, force feedings, rape, molestation, beatings, and months of isolation. For Amanda, the fight against the troubled teen industry hits close to home, as she grew up in the Bible Belt, where her parents served as staff at the Agape Boarding School in Stockton, Missouri, before departing to establish their own unlicensed children's home called Circle of Hope. Much has transpired since our initial conversation.Less than a year later, Amanda's parents, Boyd and Stephanie Householder, were arrested, facing 100 charges of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse allegedly occurring at their faith-based boarding school in Missouri. Consequently, Circle of Hope closed its doors. In January 2023, Agape Boarding School shut down following an extensive investigation and scrutiny. Additionally, in November 2023, Amanda's story was featured in the four-part documentary series "Let Us Prey," premiering on Investigation Discovery and currently available for streaming on Max.In this conversation, we delve into Amanda's participation in the production of "Let Us Prey," the current state of the Troubled Teen industry, and what the future holds for Amanda's activism.✖️✖️✖️CONNECT WITH THE SHOW:- preacherboyspodcast.com- https://www.facebook.com/preacherboysdoc/- https://twitter.com/preacherboysdoc- https://www.instagram.com/preacherboysdoc/To connect with a community that shares the Preacher Boys Podcast's mission to expose abuse in the IFB, join the OFFICIAL Preacher Boys Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1403898676438188/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/preacher-boys-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
In episode 215 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked in with Amanda Dashwood. Amanda currently works as a Practitioner for The Revenge Porn Helpline. Amanda has worked for the helpline since October 2021, which support all adults affected by Intimate Image Abuse (IIA) in the UK. In the podcast, we refer to revenge porn as IIA throughout as this is the established umbrella term for it. In this episode we discuss what IIA is, the four different forms of it and the disproportionate amount of male victims there are from one form of IIA called ‘sextortion'. We also discuss how IIA is used in domestically abusive relationships and why two forms of IIA, voyeurism and sharing private images and videos are disproportionately female victims. We discuss a prominent example of voyeurism, which was the court case of the convicted reality TV celebrity Stephen Bear and a tool that the helpline have developed where people can protect their sexual images if they suspect a perpetrator might look to publish them on the internet. For Amanda's mental health, we discuss the mental toll of dealing with distressing calls to the helpline, how she healthily detaches and switches off and protects her mental health and a period of travelling she did to Vietnam and Bali to work as an English-language teacher. As always, #itsokaytovent Find out more about The Revenge Porn Helpline here: https://revengepornhelpline.org.uk/ If you are someone or know someone who has been a victim of IIA, you can contact the helpline on 0345 6000 459 (The Helpline is open from 10:00am to 16:00pm Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays). Hydrocephalus isn't as widely-known as Parkinson's or Alzheimer's, although about one million Americans live with a diagnosis. And because of this, sharing the stories of those who live every day with the condition makes what was once invisible, visible.Amanda Garzon is the COO of the Hydrocephalus Association. The work of sharing people's stories, connecting the community, and advancing research is close to her heart. Amanda received the diagnosis for her daughter after spending their first 90 days together in the hospital. For Amanda, her strategies about expanding reach and engagement center around empowering and serving her community. But she also believes that there are things to learn from the for-profit world. She said, “We have to think like a for-profit because we are selling this incredibly valuable service, for free! So even though we aren't measuring our profit margins, we are selling ourselves. And it is priceless what we are selling.” Bio:As the Chief Operations Officer, Amanda is responsible for developing and implementing operations strategies that allow the Hydrocephalus Association (HA) to meet its strategic goals and vision. She works in partnership with the CEO and management team to find innovative ways to grow revenue that support the diverse research and patient-focused programs of the association. She oversees the development and oversight of education and advocacy initiatives, patient-centered support services as well as the management and implementation of an aggressive communications and marketing strategy. Amanda's passion for the mission of the association stem from a personal connection to the condition as the mother of an adult daughter with hydrocephalus. In an environment designed to be anti hospitable, it is a daunting task to create a space of warmth and comfort. Today's guest is someone who helps bring a sense of hospitality to otherwise unwelcoming spaces. She is an activist who fights for justice and advocates for those whose voices have been silenced. Joining the show this week is author of her memoir “Waiting to be heard” and the Host of the “Labyrinths” podcast, Amanda Knox.Amanda sits down with Host Dan Ryan to share how she was an advocate for her community while in prison, the steps for resolving conflict with others, and the ways someone's background shapes others' perceptions of them. Takeaways: True Hospitality is identifying someone's needs, and using the resources available to you to meet those needs. This can be enacted through giving someone a comfortable place to stay, or simply being an advocate for them. Someone's background creates a lens through which each interaction they have will be viewed. For people who are previously incarcerated, they face a lens of inherent suspicion and distrust from others. While tough situations require positive outlooks, those outlooks vary person to person. For Amanda, her positive outlook was accepting the circumstances, and making the best out of them. Her mother's outlook was fighting for what was right without giving up. There are four steps to resolving conflict with a person. Set the stage by finding common ground you can agree on; identify the strongest form of their argument they are trying to argue; show them compassion; and ultimately, allow yourself to be open to change. When large impacts happen, they affect everyone around the individual. Families are put under undue emotional, financial, physical and emotional stress as they work to assist those affected. While Amanda was incarcerated, she sought to overcome the limitations of the situation and assist others as best she could. She became a writer and translator for other prisoners, helping them write home and read court documents. Quote of the Show:“No matter what circumstance you are in, no matter what condition you're in, there's always the opportunity to connect with people and to make some kind of positive impact in other people's lives.” - Amanda Knox Links: Twitter: https://twitter.com/amandaknox Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/amamaknox/ Website: https://www.knoxrobinson.com/ Website: https://innocenceproject.org/ Book Link: https://a.co/d/cJDYQIK Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/labyrinths-getting-lost-with-amanda-knox/id1494368441 Shout Outs: 01:11 - MIT 13:51 - Man's Search For Meaning: https://a.co/d/9c6N7t0 17:13 - The Obstacle Is The Way: https://a.co/d/7F2gejn 22:13 - Steve Martin 43:38 - The Innocence Project 43:58 - The Labyrinths Podcast Ways to Tune In: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A2XOJvb6mGqEPYJ5bilPX Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/defining-hospitality-podcast/id1573596386 Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGVmaW5pbmdob3NwaXRhbGl0eS5saXZlL2ZlZWQueG1s Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/8c904932-90fa-41c3-813e-1cb8f3c42419

Our study on Moses continues! In this episode, we are taking a look at God having to be somewhat repetitive with Moses when giving Moses specific commands. And not because Moses did not hear Him the first time. How many times has God needed to be repetitive with us as well? It continues to comfort my heart how much I seem to relate to Moses in these ways. Enjoy this ninth lesson of our Bible study! Blessings! We are about knee deep into our Bible study on Moses and the deliverance of God's people. In our last lesson we ended on a bit of a cliff hanger, where Moses laments to God about having been obedient to Him in going to the Pharaoh. In this eighth lesson, we will read God's response to the cry and angst of Moses. We can learn a lot about God's heart and patience with how He responds to Moses. Let this lesson encourage you!Scripture Used In This Episode:Exodus 6:1-10 *main passage for our studyExodus 3:14-15Hebrews 11:1Psalm 34:18 Disclaimer: I am not a licensed professional in the mental healthcare industry. Welcome to the seventh lesson with our study on Moses from the Old Testament. We just learned how Moses and Aaron's first request to allow the Israelites a "leave of absence" from their work and go celebrate a festival unto the Lord out in the wilderness was denied by the Pharaoh. Well, in this lesson we will see this same Pharaoh continue responding to their request with more harshness, revealing much about him as a ruler. How will the Israelites respond and how will Moses take it? Your Hopeful Sister is ready for you to join this interesting, yet thought provoking lesson!Scripture Used In This Episode:Exodus 5:4-23 *main passage for our studyExodus 1:9-11Matthew 11:28-30Watch "Keep Them Busy", my teaching video pulled out of this podcast episode here: https://youtu.be/KerwDv44SlcDisclaimer: I am not a licensed professional in the mental healthcare industry. What happens to our hearts when we realize that God has been listening and hearing us throughout our struggles and valley seasons the entire time? Your Hopeful Sister is taking another nose dive into our study on Moses in the Bible, sharing how the enslaved Hebrews responded to God answering their cries for help with worship. This lesson also has us finally looking at the first approach before the Pharaoh by Moses and Aaron who ask him to allow the Israelites to leave into the wilderness for a festival. Enjoy this sixth lesson of our study on Moses!Scripture Used In This Episode:Exodus 4:27-31, 5:1-3 *main passage for our studyExodus 4:14-16Exodus 18:2Exodus 3:16-17Exodus 3:18Exodus 8:26Watch "When Our Pain Is Validated", my teaching video pulled out of this podcast episode here: https://youtu.be/2bLaw-BjyK4Disclaimer: I am not a licensed professional in the mental healthcare industry. This fifth lesson of our Moses study has us facing some baffling verses that Your Hopeful Sister bravely attempts to bring a better understanding, or at least provide possible different explanations that will help us understand. Moses has decided to take his family back to Egypt in obedience to God. We take a look at how difficult this had to have been for Moses, who had many years prior fled Egypt for his life. Obedience to the Lord is not always an easy route, but it is the most rewarding. Enjoy this lesson and be blessed!Scripture Used In This Episode:Exodus 4:18-26 *main passage for our studyExodus 2:11-15Exodus 3:19Book of JonahWatch "Understanding God's Heart", my teaching video pulled out of this podcast episode here: https://youtu.be/50jeFitTJpMDisclaimer: I am not a licensed professional in the mental healthcare industry. Within the dialogue between Moses and the Lord, Moses is apprehensive to go to Egypt and be used to deliver God's people from the Pharaoh. God responds with showing Moses the authority He has given him in order to be such a powerful instrument. The staff within his hands is a symbol of that authority, his shepherding staff. This will be our fourth lesson in our Moses study here on the Brain Don't Fail Me Podcast Show, and Your Hopeful Sister is delighted to have you here with us. Welcome to lesson three with Moses! We are now getting into the exciting part of Moses' story. God revealing Himself to Moses through a burning bush that is not actually affected by the fire that is consuming it is beyond amazing. Not only that, but God calling Moses to be an instrument of deliverance for God's people after 40 years living outside of Egypt has to be a complete shocker to our main character as well. We're all familiar with CEOs and CFOs, but we're well overdue for a Chief Officer in the HR department. That's why Amanda Young is here as Chief Human Resources Officer at Bankers Trust — to talk about what that role means and how the expectations have changed over the past two decades. Amanda started her career in HR, working through internships and learning from mentors along the way. She found herself as an HR manager at 27, and today she is one of Fortune's 40 under 40 as the CHRO at Bankers Trust. She manages a team of 525 employees and, although banks are known for being stuffy and structured, Amanda brings new life to the industry by focusing on creating the meaningful work experiences employees want. Just over the past two years, the talent landscape has changed. People are leaving behind traditional roles for a variety of experiences that bring new depth to their careers. It's less about climbing the corporate ladder and more about enriching the work experience. For Amanda, it's about creating the flexibility for her team to do just that. Like many businesses, Bankers Trust transitioned to a more flexible workplace over the pandemic. But more than going online, the bank relaxed the dress code and maintained its focus on leadership and managerial training. Amanda is still facing a few obstacles in the coming year, but learning to respond to changes instead of just reacting to them isn't one. Her intentional responses and the deliberate and collaborative programs she's implemented for her team continue to provide them with the meaningful experiences they need. Of course, not every program can be a success story. Amanda shares her pitfalls and what happens when the programs you plan don't have any follow-through. It really takes a team to manage a company, and she takes care to enrich and empower her team just as much as she empowers herself. Tune in now to hear more about the role of a Chief Human Resources Officer and the resources Amanda uses for herself. Diving right in with excitement, Your Hopeful Sister, will be sharing the second lesson on our study of Moses. We will visit the birth of Moses and all that surrounded it, as well as, what his upbringing entailed and how this shaped who he was. A great takeaway from this particular part to our study in this sixth season of "The Brain Don't Fail Me" podcast show, is how despite Moses failing miserably to a calling God had placed in his heart to be a rescuer of His people, the Hebrews enslaved in Egypt, God still plans to use him further along in his life. Let this episode encourage you to fully walk out a direction the Lord gave you despite your own shortcomings!Scripture Used In This Episode:Exodus 2:1-22 *main passage for our studyExodus 1:22Exodus 6:20Hebrews 11:23-27Acts 7:20-29Genesis 25:1-6This Episode's Sponsor:Dory's Gardens In Tyler, Texas 600 W. Studying through the life of Joseph was tremendously fun and it has launched Your Hopeful Sister into another deep dive into another famous man of God, Moses! Welcome to the sixth season here on the Brain Don't Fail Me Podcast show. It is a unique experience to read the Bible searching for truths that lead us to find our own healing from challenges with depression, anxiety, or even just woundings we have received in life. Moses has definitely had to face valleys that brought him to points in his life where he no doubt questioned everything. And God still chose him and used him for His great and mighty purposes. What a comfort to realize that we do not have to be completely perfect or whole to be used by God, though it is wise to continue down a read of healing for our own peace and to be better used by the Lord. Here begins the first lesson of the Brain Don't Fail Me Podcast show's newest BIBLE STUDY on MOSES. Your Hopeful Sister is sharing this new study here with her podcast family first! It has been exciting to discover so much from the Lord as I write this study for you. In this start of another season we begin with learning the history and context in which Moses was born into. How and why were the Israelites enslaved after Joseph was used to bring them to Egypt to escape a great famine? Why does this Pharaoh perhaps not know about or care to know about the ruling of Joseph as second in command to an earlier Pharaoh? These questions will be covered and more!Scripture Used In This Episode:Exodus 1:1-22 *main passage for our studyGenesis 32:22-32Genesis 46:2-4Genesis 12:2-3Genesis 15:12-15John 12:242 Corinthians 4:7-9Ezekiel 20:8Acts 5:29Matthew 10:16,19-20Articles Referenced In This Episode:www.cleopatraegypttours.com/travel-guide/hyksos-and-invasion-of-ancient-egypt/www.arce.org http://thecompletepilgrim.com/were-there-egyptians-among-the-israelites-of-the-exodus/Disclaimer: I am not a licensed professional in the mental healthcare industry. Your Hopeful Sister is wrapping up this fifth season on trauma with discussing how to overcome shame caused by those terrifying experiences. Shame can enter our hearts through either abuse, a terrifying event, a painful and humiliating experience or even through poor choices of our own. Healing can come from shame, which is basically identifying oneself with what has happened to you or what bad decision you may have made. As believers in Christ, we should be mindful of how our Lord has taken even our shame with Him on the cross. It is no longer ours to carry. Learning how to unload shame is integral for our healing. It has always made her sad to hear people complain that vintage is too fancy or costume-y to be worn everyday. For her, vintage clothes are very versatile. People can wear one piece or a whole ensemble, look fabulous, and ignore what other people think! That's her motto—ignore what other people think. For Amanda, Vintage is about self expression and timeless personal style. There's a piece of vintage clothing for everyone, and if you can envision it, most likely she will have it for you! Here on the Brain Don't Fail Me podcast show, Your Hopeful Sister will be sharing some treatments for trauma that are available. There are probably many more treatments and programs, depending on what type of trauma has been diagnosed, available that was not touched on in this episode. I also share my own personal experience thus far with my EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy sessions and how the Lord is using it to heal and set me free from horrible lies I have believed for way too long. Definitely a longer episode, but worth the listen to find a possible solution for your own recovery from trauma! Disclaimer: I am not a licensed professional in the mental healthcare industry. If you have not recognized yet the impact of unresolved trauma with our physical bodies, then you will want to listen to this episode where Your Hopeful Sister dives into how this works. Traumatic events can be trapped in the body and when we learn how to revisit those memories for the purposes of healing then we can see the return of health within our bodies. This discussion will also move into understanding our two nervous systems and the importance of training our brains to move out of survival mode and into peace and calm, a state that the Lord intends for us to live out of more on a regular basis. So much neat information to learn today! Keep a look out for the next episode where the discussion on healing from trauma begins. You will LOVE this guest episode with Amanda Smith, founder of The Dallas Girl Gang, an inclusive global community for women in business that is the OPPOSITE of mean girls culture. (Legit, their slogan is “you CAN sit with us” lol.) In this interview Amanda and I recall our first (& kinda negative) experiences with networking in the small business community, and we reflect on where the industry has shifted since then. For Amanda, what started as a simple Facebook group and a few dates in Eventbrite, would soon turn into a MASSIVE community and a high-end event business. (Don't worry, I ask a lot of questions about how she got from there to here.) It is so important to find a group of people who can champion you as you embark on the tough stuff that entrepreneurship holds. You *can* do it alone, but you will get farther and have more fun along the way if you invite others in. Working around the clock might help you find success at your job, but what's the value if you feel burnt out? Now more than ever, finding a work-life balance that works for you is essential. Today Linda is joined by Amanda Abella, CEO and founder of Make Money Your Honey, to talk about the value of rest and relaxation and how Amanda finds balance in her own life. The benefits of finding time for rest and relaxation: Having time for relaxation helps generate better ideas, feel better physically, and be more emotionally balanced. These criteria not only affect your work productivity, but also your general mental health and ability to find meaning and happiness in your life. How does Amanda relax? Personally, Amanda goes to the beach. But, for building her business, Amanda likes to think she's on a mission to fire herself. To build stability and time for relaxation within her business, she thinks with the end in mind. Most business owners don't think about the end result and take whatever comes to them. When Amanda hired her first assistant, they sat down and planned their vision. Amanda only wanted to sell and make connections through podcasts. That's it. It took them over two years for Amanda to get to that goal. But she started with that vision in mind and made decisions to reach it. Amanda's experience with letting go: Amanda naturally just generates ideas, so a big part of shutting down was accepting that's how she's wired, and there's nothing wrong with it. Instead of fighting it, which was draining, she just accepted it. However, just because she lets herself develop ideas doesn't mean she starts implementing them all tomorrow. Why relaxation is essential to Amanda's community: Amanda doesn't want her or her team to be running ragged because that doesn't help anybody. She teaches sales to women, who are notorious underearners. Women are conditioned to overwork for little pay and not ask for what they want, and it creates a perpetual cycle of overworking and underearning. Amanda wants to teach women not to accept this. What can someone do if they have a hard time relaxing? If you have a hard time relaxing, there's something you aren't owning or something you're trying to avoid. Do some self-inquiry to determine why and what the problem is. It is so important for us to understand what trauma is and how to know if we have the symptoms of having been traumatized by a terrifying event. Your Hopeful Sister, in this first episode of season five, will share with us the research she did on this very topic which will lay the foundation of further discussions on trauma. Christians definitely go through traumatic events and we should learn how to recognize when we need to seek out healing from those experiences ourselves. Download Podcast TranscriptMost people treat their body and mind like two separate things. Amanda Armstrong discovered that this approach didn't help her, and she found out that several clients that reached out to her to work out also needed a safe space for their minds. That's why she created Rise As We, a safe place for women who want to address their mental and physical health as one. She developed programs to take care of the different needs that she and other women had: from struggling with depression and anxiety to postpartum activities in an environment free of the toxicity that other workout places can have. Highlights:Amanda tells her story, from kinesiologist graduate that worked at Google, to founder of Rise As We. Her studies led her to think how to address mental health through a non-traditional form.My ‘me' time. Working at Google, Amanda learned that even the people that we might consider as successful have their own struggles. She developed a space where not only they could do some physical workout, but also where they could stop worrying about work & family responsibilities and focus on themselves. We need to train our brains in a new way. Our brains are always ready to judge ourselves in the most negative way, for anything that we have done or even thought. For Amanda, everyone goes through this, but you can learn to not let it affect you.Amanda created the different programs of Rise As We thinking of what she needed at different times of her life, addressing physical and mental health at the same time. Mental health looks different for everybody, and this is another option available for those who need it.Amanda highlights what the anxiety or depression looks like or feels like, for anyone that might be having a hard time trying to figure out what they are going through. The benefits of journaling: Episode Notes Journaling is a practice that has been proven to be very effective for both our body and our mind. In fact, according to a few authoritative studies, expressive writing (which includes journaling) can lower blood pressure, improve immune system functionality and positively affect our mood, among other things. In this episode of the Stepsero podcast we host Amánda Efthimiou, Mental Health Advocate, Writer, and Entrepreneur, to discuss some benefits of journaling, as well as different approaches to it, including poetry. Here are some highlights from our discussion: According to Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor, the chemical processes that are provoked by our emotions end within 90 seconds. Everything that happens after that is the result of the stories that you tell yourself. Based on this, journaling could help label your emotions, and ultimately allow you to regulate and balance your feelings.A gratitude journal can be a great way to start, and it can be as simple as writing three things that you are grateful for in the morning.Writing in free flow for just 15-20 minutes can be a very liberating act, even if you don't read again what has been written. This is not limited to only creative writers, but rather to anyone who wants to experiment with different forms of writing and journaling.Bullet-points can also be useful, especially when compiling a list of things you want to get done on a specific day, as well as the feeling you want to have by the time you go to sleep.Companies can also benefit from bullet journaling, as their employees can use this method to prioritize their goals and plan their week better. For Amanda, poetry is a great way to interpret her thoughts and give them a special meaning. Given its peculiar form, poetry allows her to express herself in a more articulated way compared to more traditional forms of journaling. Our Guest: Amanda Efthimiou Amanda Efthimiou is a mental health advocate, writer, and community creator. For Amanda, who is involved in the client support side, gaining a deeper understanding of their experiences and identifying potential needs for their product is of the utmost importance. Amanda also generates web analytics reports based on the client's website data that the company has collected. Amanda talks about the changes in traffic and customer acquisition strategies in recent years, including marketing campaigns. Almost all B2C companies as well as some B2B companies, even in traditional industries, have been expanding and diversifying channels in an effort to broaden their marketing reach using social media campaigns and social media marketing. Amanda also speaks about how a lot of companies have built their own accounts on the popular Chinese social medias. Given the diversification of internet services, the ranking of social media giants in China has changed dramatically. Users moved on to newer platforms such as QQ, Weibo and WeChat in recent years, with the most up-and-coming of them being ByteDance. She goes on to say that people spend less time on search engines because people don't need to search anymore with the invention of machine learning. She then talks about companies in China having a unique relationship with customers and that brand loyalty is key. Building brand loyalty is hard and takes a tremendous amount of time and resources, but once built it is set in stone and hard to lose. Amanda describes data-driven marketing and operations as the key to success in today's world, and not just in China. Omnichannel aggregation data is integrating into our websites, converting to massive insights. It's the key to knowing our customers, knowing what they want and how to give it to them and on which platform and at what price. She also mentions that this data and insight is also what drives marketing decisions and direction. Finally, Amanda talks about how marketing and operations will go beyond digital, and how more advanced technology, including AI, VR, et cetera, will benefit people working in the industry in the very near future, with the widespread move to 5G playing a large role in that. She believes that we will enter the age of IoT, the internet of things. And IoE, internet of everything. And even AI IoT, combining AI technologies with IoT.
Amanda Matti, former NSA analyst in Iraq and the author of her amazing true life story, "A Foreign Affair," joins the Mean to cover it all! From A Foreign Affair: "When 22-year-old US Navy Intelligence Analyst Amanda Matti deploys to Baghdad, Iraq in the summer of 2005, she does her best to prepare mentally and physically to face the horrors of war. What she isn't prepared for is to fall in love...with someone on the "other side." For Amanda and her Iraqi translator Fahdi, it's love at first sight. While serving together near the front lines of the Iraq War, the two realize their connection transcends cultures, countries and politics. Amanda knows she may have to choose between Fahdi and her career in the military, but actually finds herself at the center of an international criminal investigation spearheaded by a trifecta of US government agencies - the NSA, CIA and NCIS."
