My guest today is a senior executive at Workhuman®, a company that helps forward-thinking organizations energize their cultures, unlock their employees’ passion and potential, and unite around a shared purpose. I’ve had the pleasure of working with the Workhuman® team for over 5 years now, both attending and speaking at their amazing and unique Workhuman Live annual Conference. Each year, the conference is kicked off by the colorfully and impeccably dressed Derek Irvine, who is Workhuman’s Senior Vice President of Client Strategy and Consulting. Derek is one of the world’s foremost experts on social recognition, continuous performance management, engagement, and the future of work, and he’s passionate about helping business leaders to elevate their vision and ambitions for their company culture. Derek is also a renowned speaker and co-author of three books, including “Winning with a Culture of Recognition”, “The Power of Thanks”, and the latest - Making Work Human: How Human-Centered Companies are Changing the Future of Work and the World, which he co-authored along with the CEO of Workhuman, Eric Mosley. Their book is full of practical strategies based upon wide-ranging research, extensive data and analysis, and real-world case studies, and also covers how weaving the three pillars of THANK, TALK, and CELEBRATE into the daily lives of employees can reinforce an organization’s purpose, improve productivity, and even magnify the social impact of the business. Derek always shares a ton of great wisdom and advice in his keynotes and books, and I think you’ll really enjoy our conversation today. You’ll also come away with some practical action steps that you can take to create a more human-centered workplace for the people that you lead and serve. Topics Discussed In This Episode: What the research shows, and the argument for why human connection makes a tremendous difference for businesses. Is it possible for high-achieving and results focused cultures to achieve results while focusing on human connection? What the Workhuman Charter of Workplace Rights is, and how it can help organizations to progress faster. Three powerful words that bring humanity forward in the workplace - Thank, Talk, and Celebrate. How technology can help organizations to create more human centered workplaces. The difference between meaning and purpose at work. The role that gratitude plays in motivating employees to do their best work. Why expressing gratitude is more effective than saying “thank you”. Three actions that leaders can take to create a more human-centered workplace. If you’re a regular listener of the podcast, you’ve heard me talk with several previous guests that I first connected with back in the somewhat golden days of blogging, and the beginnings of social networks like LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook. Although I’m not sure how I originally came across today’s guest, I know that I was a regular reader of her very popular blog called Brass Tack Thinking during that time frame. Through great writing and a relatable voice, she shared experiences, practical advice, and marketing expertise, that was extremely helpful to me, and thousands of others, in building a personal brand, and in building a business that connected with those that I wanted to serve. Then, one day in January 2010, she wrote a blog post that was titled - “The Equestrian’s Guide to Reaching Your Goals” - and as a fellow adult amateur equestrian, I loved how she linked lessons she had learned from horseback riding to setting foundational goals for the next year. That was it. We were destined to be the best of friends. Or, at least virtual horse buddies. :) To this day, we love sharing, commenting and liking pictures of our horsey adventures online, and I hope we’ll actually get to meet at a horse show or an industry conference or event sometime in the future. But, since that doesn’t look like it will be able to happen any time soon, I thought that asking her to join me on the podcast would be fun, but also really valuable for both me and you. She’s still doing great work, and continues to share her thoughts and ideas freely in order to help others. Amber Naslund is a 20-year veteran marketer, and in that time she’s worked with some of the biggest companies, the freshest startups, and everything in between. In her current role as a senior consultant at LinkedIn, she advises top global clients on their digital content marketing strategies, and their overall approach to using LinkedIn, while on a mission to prove that companies can build compelling, authoritative B2B brands without being dull. Amber is also the co-author of the best-selling social media handbook The Now Revolution, and when she’s not working on her next book, article, or industry talk, she’s restoring her brain cells on horseback, or spending time with her kid (who’s also an accomplished equestrian already), and her rescue dogs. In this episode, Amber and I chat about what it was like for her to go from industry darling, to best selling author, to failed entrepreneur, and what she discovered about herself in that journey that helped her to rebuild her confidence, and fuel her success today. We also talk about what it takes to build a strong and authentic personal brand and platform in today’s noisy world, as well as what to consider when balancing a strong personal brand with a high profile corporate career. Topics Discussed In This Episode: What an entrepreneurial failure taught Amber about herself, and how it set her up for future success. What it’s like being a woman out front in the tech industry sharing your ideas. Advice for someone who asks how they can build a loyal following online. Amber’s thoughts on whether it’s necessary to be on all of the online platforms if you’re trying to build your personal brand. The difference between being authentic and being genuine, and why it’s important for personal brands. Why Amber is comfortable talking online about sensitive topics like mental health, imposter syndrome, and failures in business. Amber’s journey toward understanding imposter syndrome, and how she’s come to view it as a normal, and real, part of the process. How sharing your own vulnerabilities can be helpful with addressing imposter syndrome, and foster trust with your community. 3 tips for those who are interesting becoming thought leaders. Eight-year-old Bellen Woodard is the only African-American girl in her third-grade class in a Virginia school. After a moment coloring made her feel unimportant, she had an idea to change the conversation by giving the “skin-color” crayon a new meaning. This idea has evolved into a movement and business called “More than Peach” that is giving people across the country a way to talk about identity, race, and inclusion and inspiring girls, and women, to use their voice for change. TOPICS DISCUSSED IN THIS EPISODE: What adults get wrong about little girls. What happened in Bellen’s classroom and how she changed an uncomfortable conversation? What is the “More than Peach” project? Why Bellen isn’t afraid to speak up. What are Bellen’s Palette Packets? How Bellen has helped 2000 classrooms with her multi-cultural kits. What it means for Bellen to be inducted into the Virginia Museum of History & Culture. Bellen’s advice from her mom. How Bellen dealt with a first grader teasing her about her hair. What makes an idea shift and turn into a movement? How girls can lead at any age #LESSONUP: (3:04) Every time we would color in school, they always ask for the skin color crayon and we all just knew that, oh the skin color crayon is crayon language for the peach crayon, not really thinking about what we were doing. (4:00) And then when I told my mom about this, she said: “how about you give them the brown crayon next time?” And I said, “I don't want to do that. Instead, I want to ask what color they want as it could be a number of any colors.” And that's what I did. And then everyone started actually telling me, “I want the peach crayon or I want the brown crayon.” (5:14) I want kids to feel like they can be kids and not feel excluded and have the best options. And how I'm doing that is I have my pallet packets, which include multicultural items and my very own, “More than Peach” crayons coming in June. I actually deliver them to schools and now I'm donating to senior centers because they can't see their families due to COVID-19, because they're more at risk. Everyone should be able to color. (5:30) My big goal is to get this not just around the country but maybe even around the world so people can know that they have their own skin color and it's okay if the peach one or brown one doesn't actually match you and if it doesn't, you can actually say something. (7:02) We went into the Virginia Museum of History & Culture Museum and they decided to put one of my palette packets on display and a More than Peach tee shirt to be at the museum forever and ever. And that's really good because when I'm older, maybe people can start doing their own More than Peach project, making sure other people know that there's a skin color for everyone. (8:58) I need younger kids to stop asking for the skin color crayon, always assuming to get the peach crayon and actually telling them I want this... I actually want the peach crayon. (10:34) Be you. You are brilliant, be brilliant. And just know that if you want something to change, you should be the change and don't just hold it in for a long time. If it really bothers you, then make sure you say something because people may not think it's weird. They may actually think about it and say, you're right. I could imagine having the same hardship. (13:19) Maybe God made my hair crazy because I'm also all over the place, my hair is also all over the place. And how many of you will actually have matching personalities with their hair?
Although I spent years working in and around Hollywood, I don’t have a lot of actors or industry folks on the show. But I am really interested in the physical, mental, and emotional preparation that goes into preparing for these huge projects because, in a lot of ways, that parallels my own work in the wellness and biohacking space. It’s also not often that you get an actor who wants to geek out about all of these lifestyle and spirit hacks quite as much as our guest today, Carrie-Anne Moss. Her IMDB reads like a short novel, but a lot of us know her best from playing Trinity in The Matrix, a movie that also has a lot of surprising parallels to my work and this show. Not because I hang out with Keanu Reeves or do mind-bending martial arts, although I do usually wear sunglasses, but because so many of us today are constantly confronted with “red pill moments” — those moments when you realize that the reality you have been accepting as fact is just a facsimile of your perceptions, malleable and impermanent. It was a surprisingly prescient action flick when it came out in 1999, and Carrie-Anne really helps us explore why those themes are so relevant to the great awakening we can see happening in society today and what we can learn about living from this awareness. Listening to that awareness allowed Carrie-Anne to step into her calling to connect with women by creating Annapurna Living, a platform and portal for growth and nourishment, especially for women and mothers who want to find their voice and to step into their grace. If you’ve never heard her talk outside of a role, you might be surprised by how much wisdom she has to share. And hey, this episode also serves as a great excuse to watch The Matrix again! Topics Discussed In This Episode: What it was like training for The Matrix and what it’s like to be training again for The Matrix 4 A generation of children being raised by parents looking at their phones When you hand your child a phone, you’re handing them an addiction We’re in the middle of a beautiful awakening (with some growing pains) Choosing where and how to create boundaries for your private life when you’re a public figure Red pill moments you only experience as a mother Introspective interrogation about why you’re doing what you’re doing that everyone should practice Saying no to opportunities that don’t align with your principles and intentions, even when there’s a lot of money on the line How Shirley McLaine became Carrie-Anne’s first spiritual mentor Realizing that you can choose to believe whatever you want Rejecting desperation How podcasts can make you look forward to driving Intentionally creating your community How shows and movies can serve as self-care Learning to make room for your feelings, for yourself and your family Where you’re being triggered, there’s pain Why every single person would benefit from Kundalini teacher training — even more so than high school, Carrie-Anne says The unequal and disrespectful ways women are treated by many doctors and the medical system, especially pregnant women The wonder of witnessing a really good midwife Facing the realities of both coming into the world and leaving the world What Carrie-Anne has learned from 20 years of marriage The inner work of parenting More about this episode. We’re heading deep into the wild with one of the best possible tour guides: Daniel Vitalis, a modern-day hunter-gatherer, a great friend, the founder of the nutrition company Surthrival, and the person who taught me so much of what I know about living a nature-integrated life (without moving into a bunker in the middle of the woods forever). Daniel’s newest endeavor is WildFed, a show, podcast, and lifestyle brand inspiring others to live a wild-food journey of their own and participate in much-needed conversations on sustainably harvesting, cooking, and eating wild foods. I’m lucky enough to have seen some of season one already and you are not going to want to miss this. Because WildFed is not about traveling to exotic locales and it’s definitely not about doing it for the ‘Gram. it’s about the wild food that’s freely available in your local landscape, at the edges of your town or city, and sometimes just outside your door. It’s an endeavor to undomesticate yourself and experience the physical, emotional, and spiritual benefits of reacquainting yourself with nature and the bounty it provides. I’m so grateful for Daniel helping me get this podcast off the ground (he was my first guest back in episode two!) and for teaching me so much in this episode — and we really get into it. This interview went some places I didn’t quite expect, but man, I’m so happy it did. Warning: if you live a plant-based or vegan lifestyle, this might be a hard episode to listen to. But, regardless of what your food and lifestyle choices are, I encourage everyone to keep their hearts and minds open and give this epic conversation a chance. I think that WildFed and the information that Daniel is sharing will be transformative for a lot of people, especially if they take part in the interactive season one experience. Get prepared. We’re about to go deep into the wilds with Daniel Vitalis. Topics Discussed In This Episode: What you can expect from ReWild season one Why even the highest-quality grocery stores in the U.S. are nutritionally lacking and, at times, facilitating the decline of our health Why Daniel quit veganism after 10 years and started eating meat (and the cognitive dissonance between what many vegan communities espouse and how they live) The sad fact that some people receive death threats from people 'opposed to killing' when they go back to animal foods Did you know that there has never been a civilization of vegan humans? Lifelong vegans: a mythical creature (as are lifelong carnivores) Why the vegan diet requires supplementation to work How hunting-gathering connects every living human, regardless of where they live, to their ancestors Why do some people who oppose hunting give a blanket pass to native indigenous people while casting condemnation on Caucasian, rural folk? The Kingdom Hierarchy: Why humans value the lives of certain animals over others, and all animals over insects, plants, etc. Why it might be abusive to force carnivorous pets — and perhaps even children — to eat a vegan diet A whole lot of BS around apples Do cartoons and stuffed animals help disconnect us from our hunter-gatherer roots? How animals suffer a more painful death at the hands of wild predators than by hunters How to deal with the potential risk of eating contaminated wild game Why Daniel begin foraging wild plants and fungi The surprising lack of species variety in supermarket fruits and vegetables Why wild game and plants are far more nutritious than farmed foods, and even wild game isn’t all made equal How the ego of hunting sometimes gets in the way of sustainability and nutrition The devastating environmental impact of factory farmed animals and plants & how regenerative farming might just save us The wild game that Daniel hunts and eats, from deer to pigeons to iguanas How hunters and gatherers help thin out invasive species of plants and animals Why Daniel believes that, in many cases, hunters understand and protect the environment more than city-dwelling tree huggers The US has the most effective wildlife management and conservation program in the world — but it’s still falling short when it comes to protecting plants and fungi How ocean fish stock can be protected and why it’s the safest fish to eat Some of the culinary masterpieces Daniel has created from foraged and hunted foods What’s new at his outstanding supplement company, Surthrival, and what my go-to products from them are More about this episode. Before we get into today’s episode, I just want to thank all of you. I started these Q&A episodes a couple of months ago as an experiment and I’ve been blown away by the positive feedback and questions you’ve been sending my way. These are a blast for me to do and I love that it’s becoming a regular thing now. I also want to say that I’m not a doctor. I don’t even play one on TV. However, I have spent the last few years finding and talking to the most forward-thinking doctors, wellness experts, spiritual leaders, and biohackers around — and I love sharing what I’ve learned with all of you. If you want to ask some questions, come join us in The Life Stylist Podcast Facebook Group! It’s completely free, and you can even watch these Q&A sessions live in the future. Jonathan wants to know more about hyperbaric oxygen chambers, which are actually great for everything from travel recovery to managing Lyme disease to treating erectile dysfunction. Tiffany asked about my rewilding experiences and how I strike a balance between the “wild,” natural lifestyle and modern biohacks. Finally, Peter wants to optimize his gut health. A classic that never goes out of style, and something that I’ve actually been working on a lot over the last few months. Listen to learn more — and, again, thank you all for making this community so supportive and inquisitive. Topics Discussed In This Episode: What it’s like to be in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber Why it’s the pressure, not the oxygen, that makes the hyperbaric oxygen treatments a transformative healing experience There are other ways to get more oxygen in your brain and blood stream, but none are as safe or effective as hyperbaric oxygen chambers Why I use oxygen chambers before and after flying How to find an oxygen chamber near you The #1 biohack to support your health — oh, and did I mention that it’s free? On this very special episode of The Life Stylist, we’re flipping the script and I’m going to be answering some of YOUR questions. All of the questions in this episode came from the wonderful people in The Life Stylist Podcast Facebook Group – so, if you want to have some of your questions answered on a future episode, come and join the tribe! Honestly, I’m constantly blown away by how smart the people in this group are and I’m also learning from all of you every day, which is why I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to give back by answering some of your questions. But, at the end of the day, my best advice for just about any problem is to follow your heart, follow your gut, and follow your intuition to figure out what’s right for you. Do you keep falling into the same patterns in your relationship? Feel like you keep dating the same person, even if they have different names and faces? Struggling to find your voice in intimate situations? Today, Michele Paradise returns to teach us about the science of our relationships, why we migrate to certain romantic partnerships, and what it is in our subconscious that causes these feelings and patterns – for both men and women. Michele is a master practitioner of NLP (Neuro-linguistic Programming), and if you’re not familiar, NLP is personal development, communication, and psychotherapy tool that helps people think differently about how the world works and achieve excellence in everyday life. You may wonder what that has to do with relationships, but language is one of the most important aspects of relationships – and when we better understand the science behind it, we have a lot more power to make our voice heard and understood. We get stuck in these patterns because we are all products of romanticism, not reason, but today we’ll learn how Michele helps her clients find their voices in consciously choosing their partners and in finding their voices in intimacy. Topics Discussed In This Episode: What’s been going on since we last spoke to Michele in episodes 79 and 80 Getting in bed with Michele Paradise The dilemma with technology and real communication The shadow side of our parents being role models for partnerships Hypnotic loops with and without purpose Waking up and forcing ourselves to think How opening up your heart with Kundalini Yoga can help you create new patterns Conscious coupling How to find your voice in intimacy and relationships Overcoming the sexual shame that men and women experience Accenting words in normal conversations and covert hypnosis Asking for what you want – what you REALLY want Sex being in the mind not the body The value of opening yourself up to explore sexually with your partner Working through trauma loops and triggers, from past experiences, in new relationships Havening and role-Havening The difference between EMDR and Havening More about this episode. In this episode, we discover the most effective natural treatment for depression, anxiety, insomnia, and chronic pain that you’ve probably never heard of – but that thousands of psychiatrists and primary care providers are already providing to their patients. So what is this veritable panacea for the mind? It’s the Fisher Wallace Stimulator®, a wearable neurostimulation device invented by electrical engineers in partnership with physicians and research scientists. Joining the show to teach us more about this device and why Electroconvulsive therapy treatments are so effective is Kelly Roman, co-founder of Fisher Wallace Laboratories. The Fisher Wallace Stimulator® received FDA-Clearance for the treatment of depression, anxiety, and insomnia back in 1990 under the original brand name Liss Cranial Stimulator®. By 2010, several hundred psychiatrists were prescribing the device and finding it to be effective with thousands of treatment-resistant patients. In 2015, additional clinical research was launched at Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital and Phoenix House, resulting in a landmark study on bipolar depression. In 2017, Medicaid in Maine approved the Fisher Wallace Stimulator® for full coverage. And today, more than 9000 providers recommend the Fisher Wallace Stimulator® to their patients. So this is a full-blown, government-approved wearable device that thousands of people are benefitting from today, and that thousands more could surely benefit from if they knew this alternative to prescription drugs existed. I used to be on medication and it really made me feel terrible. I was in a bad place and I needed some help, but I wish I had known an alternative like this existed. So if you know someone who is struggling with more traditional treatments for depression, anxiety, insomnia, or chronic pain, let them know about Fisher Wallace. Topics Discussed In This Episode: What exactly you can expect from Electroconvulsive therapy (also known as “ECT”), and how it’s different from other forms of neurostimulation How ECT is different from happened to Jack Nicholson in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest How does the device help your body release dopamine, serotonin and fall into a state of deep relaxation, no drugs required. The history of Electroconvulsive therapy, going back to the ‘70s when doctors started to explore it for depression in place of antidepressants The fascinating results of Fisher Wallace’s bipolar study, which was conducted with both a placebo group and a crossover design. How Luke and others are using Fisher Wallace to enhance their meditation The device’s effect on your HRV scores, or heart rate variability What it takes to legally make a medical claim for a device or drug What causes clinical insomnia and how we can all have a higher quality of sleep, with and without medical intervention Why improving someone’s mood and sleep is hugely helpful for addicts trying to stay sober The relationship between depression and your phone or social media use Other lifestyle practices that will help support your mood and quality of sleep More about this episode. Today we're talking about an element that you probably didn't learn about in school, deuterium, and how it is likely contributing to the slow but steady degeneration of the human population. Our guests are Dr. Que Collins and Dr. Laszlo Boros, who are leading experts working to educate people on deuterium through the Center for Deuterium Depletion so that we can heal our bodies and improve the health of future generations. So what exactly is deuterium? It is a rare isotope of hydrogen (only 0.000155% of hydrogen atoms) that contains a proton and a neutron in its nucleus, and the extra neutron doubles the mass of this type of hydrogen atom. And when two deuteriums combine with oxygen, the resulting substance is referred to as “heavy” water, 2H2O, because of the additional mass. Although heavy water tastes and looks the same as ordinary water, it doesn't behave the same: it has a higher boiling point, a lower freezing point, and ice cubes made with heavy water will sink in ordinary water. These differences demonstrate that the presence of Deuterium can change chemical behavior. So why does that matter? Well, hydrogen is in the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the water we drink, and as we take hydrogen into our body, it becomes part of our blood, organs, DNA, and everything else that makes us who we are. So when deuterium builds up in your body, it changes chemical reactions at a cellular level and has devastating effects on your metabolism. Deuterium buildup can affect your ability to create and use energy, limit your DNA's ability to replicate, change how you respond to clinical treatments, and generally change, on a fundamental level, how your body works and, as a result, who you are. So sit down and get ready for Deuterium 101 because the doctors are about to share some information that everyone on the planet needs to know. Topics Discussed In This Episode: What is this thing called deuterium? How does deuterium building up in our body destroy our metabolism? The natural things our ancestors did to regulate deuterium in their bodies How much deuterium is a problem? Luke’s deuterium results from a breath and saliva test How deuterium breaks down three-dimensional structures & why this is detrimental How our society’s problematic diet is contributing to deuterium buildup The relationship between deuterium and diabetes, cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, and Lyme disease How you can eat a deuterium-depleted diet Is fruit a good thing to include in your diet? The metabolic water that you create in your body (yeah, you create your own water!) Why the camel is the mascot of the deuterium movement More about this episode. WARNING: After this episode, you will never look at your phone, internet router, or even your home appliances the same way again. This conversation is the ultimate Red Pill for the current state of electro-pollution, and its devastating effects on our biology. This show is dedicated EMFs, or electromagnetic frequencies. And it is going to change your life. If you care about your health, EMF mitigation should be your first line of defense. Some would argue that EMF awareness and protection is as important as diet and exercise when it comes to health and longevity. People ask me about EMFs all the time, and it’s such a vast topic, that I will probably need to devote an episode to this issue a couple of times per year, just to keep up. There’s always new information coming out about the potential dangers of EMFs, and public awareness is thankfully growing every day. When I spoke Paleo f(x) recently in Austin, TX, I found myself in a deep-dive conversation with #BrianHoyer, an EMF specialist and the founder of Shielded Healing. After testing the EMF levels around us in the convention center using his high- tech gear, I decided to find a quiet spot to record a conversation with Brian, to take a detailed look at this incredibly complex issue Brian’s mission is to shift people towards ancestral habits, and native lifeways that awaken dormant healing responses in the body – and to bring awareness to the unfortunate invisible side-effects of advancing technology that cripple our body's innate healing mechanisms. The good news? We’re not defenseless against these invisible stressors! Throughout this episode, Brian shares surprisingly simple solutions for minimizing or removing the damaging frequencies from your home, office, computer, and cell phone. Want to prevent your cell phone from causing a permeable blood-brain barrier? Trying to avoid being blasted by your microwave? Just want to feel better on a day-to-day basis? Brian has you covered. Please support the show by sharing it with someone you know who is probably getting fried by EMFs, and would be interested in protecting themselves. Topics Discussed In This Episode: What the heck are EMFs and why should I care? All of the things in your daily life that bombard your body with electrical fields How we can measure the micro voltage on our bodies You’ve got the Paleo diet – now it’s time to create the Paleo space! The effect of your (and your neighbors’) microwave’s magnetic field Brian’s unique EMF testing technology The surprisingly simple solutions we can use to reduce the number of fields attacking us in our homes and offices How tech like Bluetooth headsets can cause a permeable blood-brain barrier Why shielding your home can fix problems like leaky gut What you can do to minimize the harmful effects of your cell phone (while still receiving notifications) How to shield yourself from the top four worst EMF's while you sleep, and the single most powerful thing you can do to protect yourself How we, as a society, could be creating healthier technology The benefits of turning your bed into a faraday cage Avoiding the geopathic stress caused disruptions in the Earth’s electromagnetic field The danger of smart meters Is grounding technology helping or hurting you? This unique 'Bootleg Broadcast' episode was recorded live from an undisclosed location in Malibu in a room full of Life Stylist Podcast listeners, and some of LA's most fascinating and talented people – including Eli Block, Master Stroker and lead Orgasmic Meditation (OM) instructor at OneTaste. We skip the story of how Eli got into this meditative practice – you can check out my first conversation with Eli back in episode 10 to learn all about that – and dive deep into the nitty-gritty of how Orgasmic Meditation works and who it helps. Our modern sexual practice is hyper-masculine and extremely goal-driven. It usually ends up following transactional rules, like commerce. I do this for you, then you do that for me, etc. But do you want to approach intimacy the same way you approach buying a sandwich? It’s not very sexy (and not very zen). Instead, perhaps we can explore a more expansive understanding of intimacy? Interested in aligning your understanding of gender, sexuality, and orgasm with nature? Want to develop a sexual practice with your partner that doesn’t solely focus on exchanging pleasure? Then you might consider a ride on the OM train. Topics Discussed In This Episode: What exactly Orgasmic Meditation is & how you can practice it with your partner Why this process involves stroking the clitoris with no intended goal Our culture has a hyper-masculine definition for a lot of things related to relationships – but we could all benefit from learning more feminine definitions The skewed commerce of pleasure What makes a hot makeout When Luke accidentally sent his father some super nasty porn in the mail for Christmas Why there is no “nutritional value” to porn How your rigid sexual preferences can mean the undoing of your pleasure The wildly different reasons different people have sex Why your sexual skill doesn’t matter if a woman doesn’t want to enjoy what you’re doing OM as a protocol for increasing sensitivity & bringing orgasm to the next level You can OM however you want to, with whomever you want to – that’s why it’s a practice! Why it’s almost impossible to do anything else if you aren’t experiencing human connection Getting down on your knees & putting the work in to learn how a clitoris operates The benefits of practicing OM, for men and women Why one OM session doesn’t mean you’re about to have sex (although it can make sex a lot better if you feel the electricity) Why sex is an energy debit & OM is an energy credit More about this episode. In this episode, our guest is Matt Maruca, Founder of Ra Optics. At 18-years-old, Matt is, by far, the youngest guest we’ve had on the show (and possibly the world’s youngest biohacker). But don’t let his age fool you – this guy is smart. While in high school, he learned more about optimizing health than most people do in a lifetime, and he gave the machine that is his body a complete overhaul. When you look at nature, every other species has a lifestyle that is dictated by their environment, and they are in harmony with their environment. But humans have changed their environment, resulting in a fundamental disconnect from what they need to nourish their bodies. As a result, we are constantly pursuing the newest health trend – but the fact that they are trends, the fact that they are always changing, proves that none of them are actually the answer. For years, Matt found himself in this trap: he chased the newest trends and diets just so that he could stop feeling like crap. He exhausted every popular food program available, but nothing worked (of course). Then Matt really started digging in. He started following thought leaders like our friend Jack Kruse and asking big questions: How is food used in our body, on a chemical level? How does seasonal eating play into things? Geographic eating? What is light’s role in all of this? Temperature’s? What are these mitochondria things and why isn’t anyone talking about them? It’s time to use some common sense, holla at nature, and fix the dysfunction in our bodies. –Luke Topics Discussed In This Episode: What mitochondria are, how they run our cells, & why you’ll die if they aren’t doing their job The fallacy of authority The problem with “health trends” and fad diets Struggling with migraines (once for three weeks straight) How Jack Kruse, Matt’s mentor, saved his life Dr. Douglas Wallace, “The Galileo of Biology” How our man-made environment is damaging our bodies Common sense & nature How to figure out what YOU should be eating Repairing mitochondrial function Being homo domesticus Using technology to mimic natural environments & fix our bodies The cold factor & the cold thermogenesis protocol Why infrared light is so cool The restorative power of darkness Benefits of sex & the problem with ejaculating too much The sun doesn’t cause cancer – mitochondrial dysfunction does Humans are the first animal to un-ground themselves & remove themselves from the sun More about this episode.
