This week we are joined by Zeno! He shares his experience as a trans man and his evolving perspective on gender and sexuality.

We cover some entirely new territory in a candid and vitally important conversation with Avi Roque, who voices Raine Whispers on The Owl House. Like many of us, Avi (they/them) had the ubiquitous "tomboy" label imposed upon them in childhood, and suffice to say it was a long and arduous road from there to their current trans/transmasculine identity. A consummate storyteller, Avi walks us through their entire journey, which includes leaning all the way into ultra-feminine stereotypes during high school, and hitting a scary rock bottom in adulthood that finally prompted them to begin the process of medically transitioning. In July of last year, Nicole made an Instagram post announcing the adoption of her new puppy, Lily, named for Harry's mother in the Harry Potter series. Kai Katschthaler (they/them), a longtime fan of Nicole's who identifies as trans non-binary, was surprised that Nicole would pick this name due to the J. K. Rowling of it all, and commented something to this effect. Since this was all happening on social media...you can probably guess what ensued. The twist, though, is that Nicole and Kai decided to take things offline and actually talk face-to-face over Zoom, which ultimately led to Nicole inviting Kai onto the podcast! Kai starts by sharing their coming out story, and from there we tackle the *incredibly* sticky and nuanced topic of how (or even if) we can still incorporate the art we love into our lives when the people behind that art...suck. Phil Hill is someone who identifies as trans-masc. A term that I was very unfamiliar with before getting to know Phil's work. They are a blogger, a speaker and a creator on all things mental health and gender identity and they do great work on explaining many of these issues in a perfect balance between measured and passionate. In this episode we discuss various trans issues, focussing particularly on the specifc issues that affect the Transmasc community as their issues (at least in the media) are often pushed to one side.

This week we chat with Luke (he/him), who shares his experience as a transmasc, neurodivergent individual navigating the outdoors. Luke shares how his connection with the outdoors is rooted in childhood memories with his father while at the same time not seeing himself represented in outdoor pop culture. He also discusses his desire to break into the off-roading world, the barriers he faces, and the complex choice of choosing to be stealth when interacting with folks who may or may not be welcoming to queerness. Anjimile wrote their new debut album, Giver Taker, after a battle with addiction and while they were establishing their identity as a non-binary trans person. (Transmasc, more precisely, as in the Sep. 3 interview with VinylMePlease.) In the process of clearing their head and getting sober, they rediscovered their creative spark, and began to find value in making music. In their spiritual songwriting, there are redemptive songs of love, identity, and recovery, as well as finding truth and acceptance. On the record, Anjimile and their collaborators, Justine Bowe and producer Gabe Goodman, have also created a feeling of support in the arrangements, surrounding Anjimile’s mesmerizing voice with warm and steady instrumentation, along with a community of other voices in the mix. “It takes a village,” they said of how their collaborators have helped lift their songs up into their best possible state. This beautiful, buoyant, and tender pop record, Giver Taker, also draws on a surprising mix of folk, African pop, and Western pop sounds, ranging from Shona Zimbabwean pop to Madonna, Ladysmith Black Mambazo to Gloria Estefan, Whitney Houston to Sufjan Stevens. There is also a song written in the rhythmic and musical Chichewa (a Bantu language spoken in Malawi) which their parents, who emigrated to West Virginia from Malawi, still speak. Do you know that Robyn song, Call Your Girlfriend? Well for a long time, I thought it was written by this week’s guest, A.W. Weiss, because their cover of the song is just so great. I’ve listened to A.W.’s music for a long time, so I was so excited that I had the opportunity to interview them when they stopped in Chapel Hill, North Carolina on their living room tour a couple months ago.
