Today my guest is Phil Hill, an ed tech consultant and Lead at Phill Hill and Associates. Today he joins us to talk about the last twenty years and how they have shaped the sector. The conversation ranges pretty widely across a number of topics here, one of the most interesting has to do with the historic role of MOOCs. Alex and Phil agree that they are a historic failure judged by the claims made about their impact at the time, but Phil argues – pretty persuasively, that they might just possibly have been a key turning point in the history of the delivery higher education.Links:Phil Hill and AssociatesHESA's 2024 Canadian Federal Budget Commentary
In 1961, Formula 1 crowned its first-ever American World Driver Champion. Californian Phil Hill — a driver whose ulcer-ridden body should have prevented him from racing at the top levels of motorsport — never quite seemed like the prototypical race car driver. But if an American earned the highest honor in motorsport within the first 11 years of F1's existence, why don't we better remember and celebrate Phil Hill? The answer lies in the title-deciding 1961 Monza Grand Prix, a tragic, deadly race that immediately overshadowed Hill's greatest success. This is the first of a two-part series focusing on the tragedies of F1's American World Champions. Every winter for 13 years between 1954 and 1966 the greatest sports cars as well as the greatest sports car drivers in the world would gather in the Bahamas for what may well have been the coolest racing event in history. 10 days of partying, racing, hanging out on the beach, and enjoying life with some of the world's greatest stars is just as awesome as you think it is. Racers like Stirling Moss, AJ Foyt, Mario Andretti, Phil Hill, Masten Gregory, Roger Penske, Carrol Shelby and others showed up year in and year out to battle for the money and glory in the world's coolest cars. The first ever 427 Cobra race car debuted at this event, Duntov brought the Gran Sport Corvettes, Ferrari, Porsche, and on and on it goes. The history is interesting, led by a tyrant named Red Crise the event was his idea and with a unique combo of an iron fist on one side and a velvet gloved Baronet's hand on the other, he made magic. This is the fantastic story of Bahamas Speed Week.

This is Part 1 of our 2-part series on Phil Hill! Phil Hill spent his youth dreaming of driving foreign cars. He would read British race publications front to back. He grew to idolize the racers like Juan Manuel Fangio and Alberto Ascari and cars like Maseratis, Ferraris, and Triumphs. But for much of his life, it was just a dream. So how did the nervous son of a Postmaster and hymn composer become one of the most talented race car drivers of all time? Why did he leave racing near the peak of his career? Dr. Drumm McNaughton interviews Phil Hill, a top expert on educational technology and online project management, to discuss the current—disrupted—state of the industry and the answers college and university presidents must come up with to survive the existential questions facing institutions today. Podcast Highlights Unlike their predecessor MOOCs, OPMs are here to stay. Now mainstream throughout higher education, OPMs are disrupting business as usual in several areas, including accreditation and regulation, institutional governance and marketing, and risk management. Case studies like 2U and Zovia can provide higher ed leaders with valuable lessons for navigating the OPM waters. As a young racer growing up in America in the 60s, Bobby Rahal idolised people like Phil Hill, Dan Gurney and Mario Andretti - drivers who had made it across the Atlantic to drive in Formula 1. He dreamt of doing the same; of travelling to Europe to race at the circuits he'd read about in magazines and going wheel to wheel with his racing heroes. After making a name for himself on US road circuits and putting in some stand-out performances in Formula 3, that F1 opportunity came in 1978 when Walter Wolf offered Bobby a seat alongside Jody Scheckter at the US and Canadian Grand Prix. They were the last two races of the season and, sadly, they would be the first and last races that Bobby would contest in Formula 1. Although his time at the top was brief, Bobby's legacy lives on as one of a handful of American drivers to have made it to F1. In this episode, Bobby addresses the need for more US drivers on the grid and he winds back the decades to reveal the passions that fuelled his love of European motorsport, his journey to F1 and what really happened at those two races back in 1978. Growing up in Northern California, a young Alexander Rossi dreamed of racing in Formula 1. His route was not an easy one. Along the way he experienced false starts, unfulfilled promises, behind the scenes power moves and the tragic loss of his friend and teammate Jules Bianchi. Alex tells Tom Clarkson everything that led to his 5 Grands Prix in 2015 and just how close he was to staying in the sport for a longer time. Today, Alex is pushing to add the IndyCar Championship to his Indy 500 win, supported by team boss Michael Andretti, and challenged by teammate Colton Herta. Alex also has tales of racing at Indy with Fernando Alonso, and competing in Mexico's extreme truck race, the Baja 1000. Phil Hill is someone who identifies as trans-masc. A term that I was very unfamiliar with before getting to know Phil's work. They are a blogger, a speaker and a creator on all things mental health and gender identity and they do great work on explaining many of these issues in a perfect balance between measured and passionate. In this episode we discuss various trans issues, focussing particularly on the specifc issues that affect the Transmasc community as their issues (at least in the media) are often pushed to one side.

Amy and Mike invited ed-tech consultant Phil Hill to assess the state of distance learning in higher education. What are five things you will learn in this episode? How can the transition from all in-person to at least partially distance learning in education be described? Is online instruction synonymous with for-profit in higher education? Is distance learning in higher education the same as online K-12 instruction? Has modern distance learning efficacy really improved much? What should future students expect as far as online classes go? MEET OUR GUEST Phil Hill (@PhilOnEdTech) is Publisher of the PhilOnEdTech blog and Partner at MindWires, LLC. Exactly sixty years ago, Phil Hill became the first American to win the Formula 1 World Championship after triumphing for Ferrari in the 1961 Italian Grand Prix at Monza. But that moment of monumental personal achievement was extraordinarily bittersweet, with team mate and title rival Wolfgang von Trips losing his life, along with scores of spectators, in the very same race. In this special episode of Beyond The Grid, Phil's son Derek Hill tells Tom Clarkson how his father coped with both the win and the loss. He also describes in vivid detail his father's beginnings as a mechanic and hot rod enthusiast in California, and how that led, via sportscar racing in the US, to an invitation to race in Europe for Enzo Ferrari. With fascinating insights into his father's unique character, struggles with self-esteem and driving style, this is Phil Hill's extraordinary F1 story.

Welcome to Over the Rainbow, an LGBTQ+ podcast dedicated to queer education and queer representation. Hosted by Rachel Keighley (she/her). Episode 21: Trans visibility, gender dysphoria and LGBTQ+ education with Phil Hill (they/them) Phil is a trans, genderqueer and mental health activist who uses their social media platform to talk about all things gender and mental health in a raw and open way. They are also writing a book to make the workplace more inclusive to trans people, so do keep an eye out for that. In today’s episode Phil and I talk about trans visibility. We discuss the difficulties of growing up in a cis-gendered, binary world and how a lack of trans visibility can limit your exploration of your gender when you can’t see yourself. We answer the questions of how you can navigate the world without this representation, and what effects this lack of representation has on young people? From there we talk about the importance of LGBTQ+ education from a young age and engaging with trans folk to understand their lived experiences, what it means to be trans, and what gender dysphoria is. And I could see that we missed it. And I looked over at him instinctively. And he looked over at me, and he, and this is while he's managing the car close to 100 miles an hour in a corner. He looked over at me and said, 'How much do you weigh?' And I answered him, and he kind of it calculated in his brain. And he said, 'Ah, I understand now'. And he corrected, he corrected the slide, we were sliding away from the apex." 4:06 Don reminisces who he has met, been around, ate with: Phil Hill, Carroll Shelby, Rubens Barrichello, Michael Schumacher, Ayrton Senna Gerhard Berger, Johnny Herbert Mario Andretti, Nigel Mansell. 8:24 Ducati is therapy. 11:48 Don was at Frankfurt Auto show with Ferrari when 9/11 happened. And the only channel that was in English was CNN. So I was watching, you know, from, I'd get back after dinner every night, and I'd flip the TV on and watch CNN for four or five hours until the wee hours of the morning, just to try to stay on top of what was going on back home. And I was in Italy, in Italy for three weeks. So it was it was crazy. And when I came back, I remember in the in the car ride back, passing, you know, passing the city coming back from Newark Airport, you could still see the smoldering coming from the city that that many weeks later, and it was just so heartbreaking. 17:15 Jeff: you know, kept me out of college? 20:25 Don on travel: Geneva, Frankfurt & Paris for the Auto Shows, And car factories are fascinating: Detroit, Pontiac,Van Nuys, Lotus, Bentley, McLaren, Ferrari and Maserati. 21:27 Finland-ice driving on a frozen lake. 23:22 the Scandinavian Flick. 25:53 Don on driving Bugatti Veyron. 26:48 the best advice Don has ever given someone. 30:55 Jeff reveals how he wants to die.

Are You Committed to Be A Lifetime Learner In The Automotive Aftermarket? Learn Why It Must Be Your Most Important Goal. Chris Chesney grew up on a farm in North Central KS and was immersed in mechanical things early in his life. His mother died when Chris was 5, so he was his father’s primary helper. Chris was driving a tractor while pulling a feed wagon next to a field cutter when he was 6. He couldn’t reach the pedals so his dad would put the tractor in low gear and then give him the sign to hit the starter button and off they would go. Chris would gauge the speed of the cutter to allow him to fill the wagon. At the end of the row, his Dad gave him the sign and Chris shut off the tractor. His Dad would then turn the whole mess around and they’d go again. That same year was the moment that tied Chris to this industry and he remembers it like it was yesterday. He was standing in a Ben Franklin store in Natoma, KS and saw a Road & Track magazine on the rack with a picture of Phil Hill in a Ferrari F1 car and his heart jumped! From that moment to today Chris has been in love with the automobile and as a result of his passion he has been a member of the service industry since his first job, other than working on the farm, at Shorty’s Amoco in Stockton KS. Chesney held every position from tire buster to master technician, from service advisor to shop owner. He has been training technicians and shop owners for 30 years. Chris started his training business, DTEC, in Denver in 1994 where he trained over a thousand techs in the art of transient emissions diagnostics. Chris was consulted early on at the beginning of CARQUEST Technical Institute (CTI) and ultimately sold his business and moved to Raleigh NC to lead CTI. He still gets up every morning with the same passion he’s had since that day in Natoma because he says, this industry is made up of some of the finest people on this planet. They work so hard every day to service their customers and communities. Many are very successful, but many are not. Our industry is rapidly changing, and all members of our industry are stressed with the onslaught of technology, the aging workforce and shortage of skilled labor. Chris’s passion today continues to be leading the very best team of instructors and developers as he helps bring education solutions to the market. Chris made a commitment to get involved in helping bring the industry together in an effort to find long-term solutions to the issues we all face. He currently serves as Board Chair of the ASE Training Managers Council and a board member of the National Automotive Service Task Force where he works with his peers to create real solutions that our industry needs. Key Talking Points and Take-A-Ways: In the early days, Chris had a design to be an engineer for one of the big three. But realized he loved working on cars. He has a passion for how things work. Chris would go to Indy with one of his mentors Harley Veers who served as the Bear team lead at the Indianapolis 500. He spent his days in gasoline alley with Harley. That was a big influence on Chris because he can’t get enough of technology. He went with Harley to the first ever ASE test and realized then that the industry wanted to keep the government out of our business by certifying as an industry. Chris was a Snap-On dealer and also worked for Sun Electric selling scopes. In some classrooms today we do myth busting to explain the ‘truth’ and how things really work to help technicians with diagnostics strategies and success. Getting to the truth today. Example. A tier one engineering company builds an ADAS system for an OEM the code and the OEM. The OEM may shortcut the system and does not implement the technology how the tier one supplier intended. The relationship breaks apart. The tier one supplier says they will not support it. They are at odds with each other. The...

For years our colleges and universities were laggards in the adoption of new technologies to improve both learning outcomes and the administrative experience. Now, however, it's becoming increasingly clear that colleges and universities are innovating in ways that we never imagined. Before students even set foot on campus they get a glimpse into this innovation through exciting virtual campus tours and the more mundane but nevertheless timesaving ability to apply online. Once they arrive they discover a transformed classroom experience, online course management, and a variety of delivery modalities ranging from the traditional to completely online. In today's discussion we'll see that these innovations are just the tip of the iceberg. We are privileged to discuss this future with Lev Gonick, Vice President for Information Technology Services and CIO at Case Western Reserve University and Phil Hill, executive vice president at Delta Initiative, has been consulting to higher education customers for the past 10 years.
