Show Notes Episode 493: Secret Dealer Man Part 3 of the Crack Epidemic This week Host Dave Bledsoe tried to make a bartender believe he was an undercover agent for the state liquor authority and drinking for free would help their case. (It would have worked if his “badge” didn't read Female Body Inspector) On the show this week we FINALLY conclude the Crack Epidemic and Coke Month with the story of how maybe the CIA did the crack epidemic. Along the way we discover that Dave will do anything for love, but he won't do that. (That being to help a stripper smuggle drugs) Then we dive into the not so secret history of the Central Intelligence Agency. Then we meet a CIA asset and Panamanian dictator who trafficked so much coke the US Army got involved. (In taking him out, not buying his coke, we think.) Then we talk about a reporter, a hot story that was almost too good to be true. (Turned out it actually was too good to be true.) Our Sponsor this week is the Central Intelligence Agency, less evil than you think, more evil than you would like.  We open the show with 60 Minutes and close with Kirby who is living a life of danger. Show Notes Episode 492: You STILL Want A New Drug Part 2 of the Crack Epidemic This week Host Dave Bledsoe thought he was done drinking but discovered his credit card company had (Foolishly) upped his credit limit. (This will not end well for either of them) On the show this week we deliver part two of the crack epidemic talking about all the lies told by white people to scare themselves about black people doing crack.  Along the way we find out that Dave is a little snitch.  Then we dive right into a totally unnecessary lesson on the historical geography of Washington DC. (Flimsiest pretext yet for a tangent.) Then we learn how the President of the United States entrapped a high school student to sell him crack. (Every word of that is true and mostly accurate.) From there we discover how Ronald Reagan (HE'S BACK!) set the stage for the mass incarceration of two generations of Black Men. (We're sure it was an accident.) Finally, we explain the most heinous lie of the whole damn lot of them, about moms, babies and medicine. Our Sponsor this week is Creative Problem Solving, fixing it by making it worse.  We open the show with Poppy Bush sharing his stash and close with Carson McKee who wonders if it will EVER be over? Show Notes Episode 491: You Want A NEW Drug? Part 1 of the Crack Epidemic This week Host Dave Bledsoe found himself unexpectedly in a serious situation when we staggered into an Irish wake and had to pretend he was cousin Eamon from Cork. (He was quickly figured out because his fake Irish accent kept sounding more Jamaican.) On the show this week we unexpectedly found ourselves tackling a topic way more serious than this dumb show should be allowed, the Crack Epidemic. Along the way we discover that Dave was a tattle tale growing up and then dive right into the backstory of crime in the 70s, 80's and 90s. (This is where everything started going wrong.) Then we learn how someone (could be kids from Barbados could be kids from Berkeley, or the CIA) learned how to make crack from stuff in your cleaning cabinet.  We take a look at the economic and social conditions that made the crack trade so popular in the inner city. (This is where shit got real) before laying out crack's real top customers.  (White people, surprise!) Then we look at the impact of crack on the communities that sold it. That is when the show became a two-parter. Through the decades our society has faced crisis after crisis: The Crack Epidemic, 2008 Financial Crisis, the Opioid Crisis, COVID-19 and innumerable events have directly impact the economic, social and emotional health of everyday people.  The criminal justice system in New York State sought to create a pathway in the court system to address mental health and substance abuse issues proliferating case after case, through the creation of Treatment Courts. However, the implementation of these court systems have not been uniform across municipalities. As a result, people are forced into unfair plea agreements and unsustainable treatment programs. On this episode of The Public Good, Sophie Feal of Legal Aid Bureau of Western New York of the Holistic Representation Unit, discusses advocacy efforts to standardized harm reduction principles and create wider accessibility of treatment courts in New York State. The crack epidemic has had seismic impact on American culture, from music to TV and film. This week, Brittany Luse talks to Donovan X. The crack epidemic of the 1980s and 90s had a devastating and lasting effect on black communities and the criminal justice system. But Donovan X Ramsey writes that those who survived the era will hardly ever talk about it and when they do it's, “like a trauma long accepted in hushed voices, with thousand yard stares.” In his book, When Crack Was King, Ramsey is on a quest to understand the crack era through portraits of a user, a kid of an addict, a dealer, and a politician pushing for treating the epidemic as a public health problem. We talk to Ramsey about his book, the myths that permeate our flawed understanding of the crack era and the resilience of communities that lived through it. Guests: Donovan X. Ramsey, author, "When Crack Was King" - Ramsey is a former senior reporter with the LA Times. He is currently a senior editor with the Marshall Project.

To understand what's behind existing wealth and opportunity gaps, history is sometimes our greatest teacher. But chances are when we think of the crack era, our minds go to how it was depicted in the media or political campaigns and policing in the 1980s and 1990s. Do we really know the individuals who suffered and what happened to them? And while people suffered, who profited? How do the failures of that epidemic continue to haunt and hold back our plight against drugs, as well as social justice and wealth equality today? Ramsey explores how the crack cocaine epidemic of the '80s and '90s shaped people, neighborhoods and entire communities, particularly for Black and low-income folks. He writes portraits of those who struggled with addiction, those who sold the drug, and those who tackled policy and decriminalization. In today's episode, Ramsey tells NPR's Ayesha Rascoe why he wanted to dispel the myth of the "superpredator," and how societal views on addiction changed once people of color were no longer the face of it.

N.W.A's “Dopeman” Is one of the illest songs ever made because it takes you deep into the drug dealer's perspective on selling drugs. The crack dealer was evil but we should still seek to understand what drove him and when we look into his soul we find that like the fiends he served, he too was an addict, but he was addicted to power and money. Crack dealers and their culture had a deep influence on hiphop culture and the Black community. In this ep we go into "Dopeman” with The D.O.C. from NWA and talk to several former drug dealers about how dealers changed the world around them. "My Brother's A Basehead” is a true story. Posdnous from De La Soul had an older brother who had a crack addiction and it was very damaging for the whole family. For Pos and his parents, crack was literally in the house just as it was in many houses and many families during the crack era. Crack decimated many families and De La Soul made one of the most powerful songs about all that. In this episode we talk about how crack destroyed families and what went into the making of "My Brother's A Basehead.” We talk to Prince Paul, De La Soul's producer who's sometimes called the 4th member of the group. We also talk about a very different song about crack users, Public Enemy's Night of the Living Baseheads, which looked down on people who used crack while one of the members of PE was a crack addict. Today we cover the formation of the infamous Bloods and Crips gang rivalry. How did it get started? Why did it begin in South Central Los Angeles in the late 1960s and early 1970s? The Crips were founded by two high schoolers named Raymond Washington and Stanley “Tookie” Williams, who formed an alliance to protect their neighborhoods from other young people who were harassing them. And then very quickly, gang violence escalated far beyond beating up other kids with your fists to  drive-by shootings, over 15,000 murders, and controlling much of the nation's drug trade. We're excited to share that conversation with you.    Why did Metta World Peace start speaking about his mental health? “I've experienced so many things – you know you're playing basketball [as a kid], and you got to duck under the bench, people shooting. Sometimes you got to go to the game with guns in your bag, you know, different things like that, to make sure everything's cool. And that's just that's just not life. Life is tag. Life is freeze tag. Life is… hopscotch when you're a child… life is learning. That's life. Kids should be outside playing in parks.” – Metta World Peace Metta shared his story growing up The Crack Epidemic and the impact on his neighborhood The challenges of incarceration, lack of education, and access to resources Building a shell to protect yourself on the streets What you learn and practice in the neighborhood he grew up in The role of history and the impact of slavery on mental health of generations of Black people The number of friends who are incarcerated The role of “chemical imbalance” in the mental health landscape and the family members who have dealt with more serious mental illness Metta's desire to give back to the mental health community How Metta World Peace is working to solve the problems that lead to poor mental health The meaning of his name and why he changed it Coming together with all types of people Pushing back on separation and division or divisive statements No guns or drugs allowed in my neighborhood Challenging what has been defined as “life” in his neighborhood The lack of connecting resources (like parks) in all neighborhoods The importance of play and letting kids be kids The challenges that Metta World Peace faces in putting forward his message “I'm a colorful, I love comedy. I like to do silly stuff. It's just fun to me, honestly. But then people want to put me on television to do something silly. But when I want to do something meaningful, they don't want to do that programming... that's why I'm so vulnerable, honestly, because I don't know how else I'm going to get it out to the to the world.” – Metta World Peace Describing self as emotional and colorful Needing to boost his confidence Mental health stigma before his first disclosure (thanking his therapist in 2010) How people perceive Metta versus how he sees himself interacting in the world Metta World Peace's vision for the future Everyone has access to mental healthcare Everyone has a chance to have a good life We try to understand each other and what motivates them, what they are going through People coming together to improve society Parenting and partnership training in schools Putting parks in every neighborhood so kids can play, connect, and be kids What Metta World Peace is doing now “Sometimes it's too much [speaking about mental health], you know, sometimes I'm too vulnerable, and it hurt me a lot. Because I'm telling people where I'm from, I tell people how I live.” – Metta World Peace After retirement, Metta is focusing on spending time with his children, partner Speaking up to address mental health disparities Sharing his story to shine a light on the challenges he has faced His desire to do something powerful to make a difference Partnering with OOTify to support mental health access Business endeavors to support philanthropy for mental health Supporting other businesses to be successful Artest Management Group: Embedding philanthropy into all of the businesses Metta World Peace supports XvsX Sports helping athletes to get discovered, compete, and coach   Our Generous Sponsor for this episode of the Modern Therapist's Survival Guide: Thrizer Thrizer is a new modern billing platform for therapists that was built on the belief that therapy should be accessible AND clinicians should earn what they are worth. This episode I look into the Crack Epidemic of the 1980's in the United States. Cocaine was the rich person's drug of the nightclubs all around the world, until it was discovered that crack rocks could be made and sold for a fraction of the price. Over 60 cubic metric tons of cocaine was making its way undetected every year into the United States. Did the U.S. Government turn a blind eye to cocaine smuggling? Why would they allow the streets to be flooded with illegal drugs? One investigative journalist connected all the dots and he lost his life for doing so.

Lonnie David Franklin Jr. was but one of the numerous prolific serial killers preying on sex workers in South Central Los Angeles in the 1980s. And then after possibly going to "sleep"  during the 1990s, he started killing again in the first decade of the 2000's. The Grim Sleeper preyed almost exclusively on black, female, crack-addicted sex workers in South Central where he lived. South Central was in the midst of a crack epidemic when he got started in 1985 (or possibly 1984), and by the time he was done in 2007, he'd killed at least ten women but likely closer to twenty-five. And one man as well. 1980’s Cracks Epidemic was architects by the US Government to destroy the Negro Americans community. Crack cocaine was designed specifically for Negro Americans in the lab to make us more addicted. George Bush SR and Oliver North was very involved in this program. They were selling weapons to Iran with drugs money . They trained Noriega and used him to control the drugs trades in Central America. They used Negro community to market and sell cocaine and crack throughout this country. In the 1970’s during Disco area cocaine was party drugs mostly used by celebrities. Secondly they created those racist and biased laws to put 100 of thousands men of coloured in jails and prisons throughout this country. Millions of Negro Americans were addicted to crack cocaine and 100 of thousands lost their lives. That’s why they’re millions of single women in the Negro community . Due to crackdown on the Negro men for selling or using drugs. Those drugs were put in the streets on purpose to dismantle the Negro community. The war on drugs was code word for war on the Negro Community. You must understand that. This episode is an in depth exploration into John's journey into the film world and the epic body of work he produced triggering a global response from Black people globally to become more conscious and woke regarding the Black identity, Black history and Black Economical positioning throughout the decades. His films and television shows offered explanations around urban myths surrounding the still ever present drug epidemic sweeping through Black American communities known as the Crack Epidemic and now the Opiod Crisis. John was more than just a film maker his films were bodies of work that triggered thinking and raised consciousness within Black people evoking a sense of curiosity and pride in embracing themselves and their original origins of birth thus connecting it with their current neighbourhoods and surroundings. Alerting us to political subjects such as gentrification and white collar crime seen in his award winning film Boyz In The Hood, Poetic Justice and Snowfall his last project which highlighted the deeper involvement of government involvement in drug trafficking and why the war on drugs would never be won. “The fans just want to know who the fuck the artist is.” —Andre "Herm" Lewis About: For a place that proudly heralds slogans like #BlackLivesMatter, the homes of San Francisco house very few Black people. What’s happened to the African-American community in San Francisco is a much more complex tale than just being pushed out by young and transient up-and-comers. Instead, it involves a deeply-rooted history spread across generations with a comet-sized impact that is still being felt today. And for the sake of this three-part story, it begins with the very polarizing San Francisco nickname: Frisco.
