On this weeks Broken Records Steve and Remfry continue their search for the worst album ever made by reacquainting themselves with an old friend. This is definitely not the first time we've spoken about death metal pioneers Morbid Angel's 2011 comeback album Illud Divinum Insanus, but we're obliged to do it and so we're going in deeper than ever. Quite what makes this record broken are things we've discussed in prior podcasts; the absurd and seemingly endless wait from the return of iconic frontman David Vincent in 2004 to the actual release of the album, the various line up changes, Vincent's quite atrocious lyrics and, most importantly of all, the bands ludicrous attempts to broaden out their classic death metal style with some highly ill advised industrial metal influences. We're not quite sure what they were going for, but, whatever it was, we're pretty sure it wasn't meant to end up sounding like Radikult does here. The death metal fans, famously known for their open mindedness, went mad and had a meltdown when the album was released, Vincent soon departed… even though he didn't appear to be told about it, and both he and guitarist Trey Azagthoth spent the next few years blaming the other one for the stench that Illud Divinum Insanus made. Still, it's not all bad, they did manage to release a three disc, 39 track, 3 hour and 5 minute long remix of the album, which surely gives them the world record for the single most pointless music release ever, the original artwork is good and, man, you should check out the lovely tin the CD comes in!

As metal music continued to grow in popularity, thrash bands turned up the inclusion of Satanic lyrics and sound in their music. Venom and King Diamond were among those to lead the way. Many metal bands became more extreme, musically and lyrically. Host Jon Wiederhorn speaks with Venom vocalist and bassist Cronos, Gary Holt of Exodus and Slayer and King Diamond of Mercyful Fate and many others, as he explores “The Devil in Metal.” This is Episode 2 of a 2-Episode arc. FROM THE EPISODE: Venom vocalist and bassist Cronos shares what led him and the band to their style of metal. Gary Holt of Exodus and Slayer talks about his early days on the road. Mercyful Fate's King Diamond reveals what was behind some of the band's pro-Satanic music. Morbid Angel's Trey Azagthoth reviews the band's occult rituals. Atheist frontman Kelly Schaefer goes over some of the crazy “stuff” he saw backstage. Behemoth frontman Adam “Nergal” Darski reveals if he's a Satanist? Vincent Crowley, former Acheron frontman, talks about being a member of the Church of Satan. Mayhem bassist Necrobutcher talks about a very disturbing 1991 incident. For me, this was a flashback to L'amours in Brooklyn in '91. I went to see the "Grindcrusher Tour". "Cyclone Temple", "Nocturnus", "Godflesh" and "Napalm Death" were on the bill. When "Nocturnus" took the stage, I got a little confused. "Where is the singer?" I asked myself. Then I noticed that the drummer is the lead singer as well! It definitely caught my attention. My guest on Episode 198 of The Brooklyn Blast Furnace is that man. Mike Browning. Original drummer for "Morbid Angel". We go back to Tampa, Florida when he went to high school with Trey Azagthoth and forward. Super interesting stories and awesome guy. I hope you enjoy this one!
A conversation about 2020, his 1st brews, the soundtrack to his youth, his 1st shows, The Merciless Concept, the modern NY metal scene, his time in Suffocation, Twitch, his hangover cure & rat fishing with Trey Azagthoth of Morbid Angel. Throughout this interview Kevin was drinking Nightmare Brewing Company's "Colombian Necktie". This Gose was soured on Mangoes with Lulo, Soursop & Colombian lime zest. It clocked in with a 7.2% ABV. & Matt was drinking Third Moon Brewing's "Continuous Blood". This NEIPA was crazy creamy, radiated tropical fruit & was ultra enjoyable. It clocked in with a 6.8% ABV. This episode was recorded live on Kevin's Twitch channel back in late October. Mike Browning is someone you should recognize as the original Vocalist/Drummer of MORBID ANGEL, NOCTURNUS, AFTER DEATH, NOCTURNUS A.D. and INCUBUS. Not the garbage 'Pardon Me' -band but one of the numerous INCUBUS from the metal underground. Reaper Metal FAN CLUB members have their questions for Mike, but it all starts with Morrisound Studio and working with Jim Morris as opposed to Scott Burns. There are a lot of great stories in this episode about Trey Azagthoth, David Vincent and the Florida Death Metal as Mike vividly remembers it! Steve Tucker (Morbid Angel, Warfather). Steve joins Andrew to chat about the new Morbid Angel album, Kingdoms Disdained, as well as some interesting conversation about the bands unheralded classic, Formulas Fatal to the Flesh ('98).
Legendary death metal unit MORBID ANGEL will unleash their ninth studio album on December 1st via Silver Lining Music and JVC in Japan. Titled Kingdoms Disdained, the record reunites founding guitarist Trey Azagthoth with Just one play of MORBID ANGEL's searing Kingdoms Disdained, and you'll realize that this is the only true current aural document of a world sinking into uncharted despair. "The album title says it all," says Tucker, "everybody's fed up and nobody can figure out how to fix it. We've got all these miniature wars in neighborhoods, cities, countries, and we've got people with varying opinions causing chaos, yet everyone is doing what they feel is right. Which all makes it feel like the world has reached a point of utter madness and confusion." As if fate constructed the moment, these forefathers of death metal found themselves witnessing the storm's eye as they prepared to create Kingdoms Disdained, deciphering it with their ferocious music via long-held Sumerian-based beliefs. "It's been written but nobody pays attention, because we erase our history," furthers Tucker. "We don't understand much about the Sumerian texts because things got erased, buried, and broken up. And for years, Trey and I talked a lot about the idea of those Gods waking up and coming back to show us that they're angry." Recorded at Mana Studios in St. Petersburg, Florida and produced by MORBID ANGEL with Erik Rutan (MORBID ANGEL, Cannibal Corpse, Hate Eternal, Six Feet Under, Belphegor), Azagthoth, Tucker and drummer Scotty Fuller (Annihilated; former Abysmal Dawn) created eleven pieces of devastatingly dynamic death metal. Compositions such as "Garden Of Disdain," "Architect And Iconoclast," and "The Pillars Crumbling" supremely illustrate Azagthoth's incredible creative alchemy with Tucker as well as his own incomparable guitar work. "We're always trying to paint pictures; to create images," notes Tucker, "and I think this album is a fair image of the world today, but taken from a different perspective; the perspective of those Gods who built this, who may be resting now but are starting to wake up." Kingdoms Disdained also features artwork courtesy of Irish mixed-media artist Ken Coleman, who created a series of pieces that further augment the stories being told. Don't walk meekly around the edge of Kingdoms Disdained, go all-in on the journey and MORBID ANGEL's intense importance to these times will be crystal clear. MORBID ANGEL's Kingdoms Disdained will be available on CD, vinyl, and digital formats. Preorders are currently available at THIS LOCATION where you can also hear opening track "Piles Of Little Arms." A special-edition boxset will be available to order shortly.
