In this interview, Joshua Toomey welcomes Alan Robert, bassist for Life of Agony and accomplished artist, to discuss his creative projects. Alan shares insights about his latest endeavor, an official Beetlejuice coloring book in collaboration with Warner Brothers, which coincides with the release of the new Beetlejuice movie. He talks about the process of drawing scenes from the movie and how much fun it was to immerse himself in Tim Burton's world. Alan also reflects on his artistic journey, from illustrating other projects like the Universal Monsters coloring book to his early experiences learning from legendary comic book artist Walter Simonson during his time at the School of Visual Arts. He recalls how comic conventions were much smaller in the early days and how breaking into the comic industry back then was tough. He shares how he eventually balanced music and art, creating iconic band merchandise and album covers for groups like Black Sabbath and Pantera. The conversation also touches on Alan's roots, his longtime friendship with Biohazard's Evan Seinfeld, and how watching them succeed inspired his own musical career. Throughout the interview, Alan discusses the evolution of creating art, how digital tools have revolutionized the process, and the importance of meeting deadlines when working on big projects like Beetlejuice. Alan discusses the creative process behind his comic work, drawing inspiration from music, like Pantera's Cemetery Gates, which influenced his short story. He also highlights his collaboration with Z2 Comics and other projects like the Type O Negative graphic novel. Alan reflects on balancing his artistic endeavors with touring, recalling his earlier days of drawing comics backstage during tours in the early 2010s. He contrasts that with his recent approach, where he focuses on intricate artwork, like The Beauty of Horror, while at home and reserves touring for music. Alan also reminisces about his time at the School of Visual Arts and shares a fun experience watching Keanu Reeves live on The Late Show. He appreciates the balance of his current life, splitting time between touring and comics. He mentions recent recording sessions at a legendary NYC studio, hinting at exciting music releases soon. Finally, he touches on the importance of creator-owned comic projects and his freedom to expand his characters across multiple platforms.Joshua Toomey on Facebook/Twitter @talktoomeytalk Support Toomey on Patreon www.patreon.com/talktoomey Concept Cafes Coffee https://www.conceptcafes.com Subscribe to Talk Toomey on YouTube for in-depth interviews with the most exciting artists in aggressive music, deep dives into iconic artists' discography, and more. #talktoomey #lifeofagony #coloringbook #beetlejuice #bassplayer

Today's episode touches on trade, trends, and forecasts. Join me and learn 3 new words, and one useful expression. Visit EnglishforEconomists.com for show notes and course updates. Hello all you happy economists out there. This is Alan Robert, back with episode 81 of English for Economists. Listen to this headline closely, then I'll discuss it. “WTO slashes world trade forecast as manufacturing slowdown bites” Listen again. Try to understand what the WTO expects for world trade, and why. “WTO slashes world trade forecast as manufacturing slowdown bites” It's a great headline for us to work with, because there are not one, not two, but three valuable lessons you can learn. First things first, in case you don't know, the WTO is the World Trade Organization, the organization which aims to facilitate and regulate international trade. So, what does the WTO expect for world trade? Do they think it will grow or reduce? The headline says the “WTO slashes world trade forecast”. To slash! Wow… that is a strong verb. It means to cut, but to really cut. You say the word ‘slash' and I immediately think of someone swinging a long sharp sword. Maybe a soldier from the middle ages. Slash! You can slash forecasts, budgets, prices, all kinds of things. Great verb! So, why is the WTO slashing its forecast? Well, the headline says it's because ‘manufacturing slowdown bites'. Bites! That's another strong word. Bite, like with your mouth and your teeth, like when you chew. So the manufacturing slowdown bites; the manufacturing slowdown is being felt. It is biting into into the world trade forecast. So, it looks like it's going to be a tough year for world trade, which is unfortunate news for many countries. How about where you live? Will importers and exporters where you live ‘feel the pinch' if global trade drops? If they ‘feel the pinch', it means that they experience financial or economic hardship or strain. So, getting back to our story, The WTO now expects world trade volumes to grow by just 0.8% this year, down from a forecast of 1.7% in April. Growth is expected to pick up to 3.3% in 2024. The WTO says a slump in goods trade that began in the fourth quarter of 2022 is continuing, and hopes of a pick-up in demand have been crushed. As a result, trade is expected to grow more slowly than GDP this year but faster next year. “WTO slashes world trade forecast as manufacturing slowdown bites” Before finishing, here is the key vocabulary one last time. WTO: World Trade Organization To slash: To cut deeply. To reduce. To bite: It means the negative impact is being felt. Feel the pinch: That's an idiom that means to experience financial or economic hardship or strain. https://www.theguardian.com/business/live/2023/oct/05/uk-cloud-computing-face-cometition-investigation-amazon-microsoft-bond-market-construction-business-live?page=with%3Ablock-651e58ec8f0880e74add5a2c Image thanks to: https://www.kingandcountry.com/slashing-sword-p-8115.html

English for Economists | English Lessons for Economics and Finance
Learn the English vocabulary you need to read, write and speak about the economy in English! Hi. I am Alan Robert, and I am a teacher who specializes in teaching English to economists, and to other professionals who need to speak, read or write about the economy in English. I've taught English to economists employed at central banks, pension funds, and utility companies for more than 20 years, and I will show you the most useful, relevant vocabulary you need to talk about what is happening in your country, and your industry. In every podcast, I'll share a topic that has been in the economic news recently and I'll introduce the key words related to the issue. You will hear the definition of the word, and you'll get a chance to hear the word used in context. Subscribe or follow this show so you don't miss any future episodes. I also encourage you to listen to earlier episodes. The topics are still relevant, and so is the vocabulary. If you are interested and you'd like to learn more about other English language lessons, come visit the website englishforeconomists.com. But for now, welcome to the show. I am so glad you could join me.
We're joined by Life of Agony's Alan Robert, who talks to us about the band's upcoming tour, NFTs, Monster Chompers, The Beauty of Terror, and more! Novak Djokovic got bounced out of Australia without even playing a match, a guy wanted a COVID-positive escort, and are cruises a good or bad idea? Prince Andrew is now a commoner, we discuss Archive 81 and Peacemaker, and we've got all of your weekly favorites too!

Today we are thrilled to be talking with Alan Robert, whom many of you know as the bassist/songwriter for the heavy metal band Life of Agony. And a few years back, Rolling Stone rated Life Of Agony’s River Runs Red album one of the greatest heavy metal albums of all time, which I appreciated as the song River Runs Red is one of my favorite songs of all time. And Alan is also the creator of the best selling coloring book series The Beauty of Horror and just announced the newest edition of the series, The Beauty of Horror 5: Haunt of Fame. Now at Hardcore Humanism, our goal is to help you apply some of the core principles of humanistic psychology so that you can break free from the conventions and expectations that others may put on you, or that you may put on yourself, find your purpose in life and work hard to achieve it. Alan has dedicated himself professionally to a lifetime of artistic expression and has had great success in different mediums. But one of the themes that cuts across much of Alan’s work is the exploration and embrace of horror. And so I wanted to talk with Alan about the psychology of horror as a genre and theme. And one of the reasons this concept is so important to Hardcore Humanism is because horror, whether in art, music, or film, is often dismissed as frightening, harmful and ultimately damaging, because it explores terrifying themes. And thus people who enjoy this art form are often stigmatized as somehow being damaged or dangerous. But for fans of horror, it is in fact the extreme nature of the art that ultimately can be a safe and healthy form of emotional validation, exploration and expression. And Alan’s ability to bring the energy and thematic content of horror into a very new medium – coloring books – gives perhaps an entirely new population an opportunity to safely understand and experience challenging emotions, while also challenging the stigma that horror and horror fans sometimes carry. *****Newsletter: https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/su/GBmf0iU/HardcoreHumanismSignUpInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/hardcorehumanism/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HardcoreHumanism/Twitter: https://twitter.com/hardcorhumanismLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/hardcore-humanism/

Optogenetics is big news in neuroscience and could potentially change the lives of millions of humans who have lost sensations in parts of their bodies due to nerve damage or the loss of limbs even. Neurons in the brain work together to harvest thoughts and behaviors. Optogenetics is a technique used in biology using the combination of genetics and light to control events within these precise cells of living tissues. This technique allows scientists to casually manipulate cells and activate them directly. In this interview UC Berkeley Postdoctoral Fellow, Alan Robert Mardinly, shares the research and development UC Berkeley neuroscientists are working on to build equipment using a holographic approach on the brain which activates or suppresses a group of neurons all at once to stimulate brain activity and insert false sensations. Essentially this manipulates it into thinking it has felt, seen or sensed something. Based on the activity which is closely being monitored, researchers then decide which neurons to activate to simulate those patterns again in order to substitute missing sensations. This groundbreaking technology could change the lives of anyone who has lost a limb or feeling in parts of their body due to severe nerve damage, for example.
On a cheerfully gruesome, colorful, and hard rocking edition of After Hours AM/America’s Most Haunted Radio — with hosts Joel Sturgis and Eric Olsen — we visit with horror artist, comic book creator, and Life of Agony bassist/songwriter Alan Robert about his new The Beauty of Horror 2: Ghouliana’s Creepatorium – Another GOREgeous Coloring Book. Alan joins us at top of hour 2. Hour 1 Joel and Eric dredge up the week’s coolest paranormal news from the America’s Most Haunted Twitter feed. The Beauty of Horror 2 Following up his #1 best-selling coloring book The Beauty of Horror, creator Alan Robert returns with volume two in the series – The Beauty of Horror 2: Ghouliana’s Creepatorium – Another GOREgeous Coloring Book. Ghouliana’s Creepatorium (Sept 19, IDW) continues the journey of everyone’s favorite undead girl, Ghouliana, as she mischievously attempts to trick budding colorists into unleashing her deadly spell. Ghouliana has secretly sprinkled her haunted ingredients throughout 80 pages of Robert’s original pen and ink illustrations. The Beauty of Horror 2 features a beautifully chilling red-foiled cover and high-quality paper that will ensure the pools of blood you color don’t leak through the pages. “I was completely blown away by the overwhelming response to the first book,” Robert says, “the amazing color work fans have been posting online inspired me to get crackin’ on volume two right away! And this time, Ghouliana’s got even more tricks up her sleeve.” Regarding Beauty of Horror 1, Robert confides, “The coloring book craze took hold of my wife and daughter a few months ago and I wanted to get in on the fun, but as I flipped through the endless pages of nature patterns, it dawned on me that someone left out all of the damn corpses. As a proud member of the horror community, I took it upon myself to stand up for the rights of monster-lovers everywhere
Stephen Hill chats to Mina Caputo and Alan Robert of Life Of Agony about their incredible journey, both personal and musical, the stories behind that journey and an insight into one of the most criminally underrated bands of the past 25 years.
Alan Robert of Life of Agony joins the show this week. Alan and Josh talk about the new Life of Agony album "A Place Where There's No More Pain". The guys discuss Alan's artistic side including his graphic novels and adult coloring book. Alan speaks openly about Mina Caputo and the changes the vocalist has gone through. They also go over the time Whitfield Crane was in the band and the possibility of Alan taking over the vocals at one point. Alan tells great stories of the shooting the Through and Through video and touring with Carcass, Korn and Ozzy. This episode also marks the beginning of Mike G joining the podcast as a co-host. Mike lets Josh know about his love of Ugly Kid Joe and this may be the last time Mike is allowed to pick the Talk Toomey cover of the week, which is Ugly kid Joe covering Black Sabbath's N.I.B. The final thought for the week is a discussion about the Roach Koach Podcast. The hosts have both fallen down the rabbit hole of that great show. ------------------------------------ GUEST LINKS:Killogy Alan Robert CONTACT: Email Talk Toomey Talk Toomey Facebook Talk Toomey Twitter SPONSORS: PUCK HCKY STORE: Talk Toomey Merch Talk Toomey Logo Tee DONATE: Patreon Paypal

You'll definitely find treats, and not tricks, on this special episode of The Comics Alternative. Derek and Gene take their annual look at the various comics being releases specifically for Halloween or published to coincide with the season. They begin with what is probably their favorite of the lot — at least Derek's favorite — Richard Corben's new book, Edgar Allan Poe's Spirits of the Dead (Dark Horse). They point out that while this is an October release, the majority of the stories collected in this volume originally appeared as either single issues or in Dark Horse Presents over the past two years. This is yet another series of Poe adaptation from the great Corben, following his early work for Eerie and Creepy — and most recently collected in Creepy Presents Richard Corben — and Marvel's Haunt of Horror: Edgar Allan Poe. (For more about Corben's work on Poe, specifically commentary on the adaptations found in the new book, check out Derek's recent interview with the artist.) Next the Two Guys turn to a new, fun book from Zac Gorman, Costume Quest: Invasion of the Candy Snatchers (Oni Press). This is based on the popular roleplaying game, Costume Quest with which neither Gene and Derek are familiar. But that doesn't stop them from enjoying this all-age comic. Then they look at a series single issues, beginning with another game-based title, Ian Edginton and Alex Sanchez's The Evil Within #1 (Titan Comics), and one of DC's free releases for this year's Halloween ComicFest, Scooby-Doo Team Up Special Edition (written by Sholly Fisch and art by Dario Brizuela). After that they discuss one of the most exciting new titles of the season, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Robert Hack's Chilling Adventures of Sabrina #1 (Archie Comics). The guys feel that this will surely follow the popular and critical success of last year's Afterlife with Archie, and it has the potential of even surpassing it. Next, they look at the first issue of Ty Thomas Kuckman, Trevor Luckman, and Dave Mim's All Hallows' Eve (215 Ink), Donny Cates and Daniel Warren Johnson's Ghost Fleet #1 (Dark Horse), and Alan Robert's Killjoy: Special Halloween One-Shot (IDW Publishing). Finally, they wrap up with a survey of Zenescope's holiday offerings: Grimm Fairy Tales 2014 Halloween Special, Zombies vs. Cheerleaders Halloween Special, and Hollywood Zombie Apocalypse #1. As the guys reveal, it's a mixed back with Zenescope, but if you're looking for a little cheesecake thrown in with your cheesy horror, these titles might be for you. Whatever your tastes, you're certain to find some good comics reading this Halloween season!
