Metal Debate Album Review - Stalker At The Midian Metal (Crown Of Anguish)

Welcome metal heads from around the world to another episode of The Great Metal Debate podcast. Its Xander with another back to back album review. Today we will be checking out the debut full-length album by Crown of Anguish from Preston, UK. The album is titled Stalker At The Midian Gate which was released July 9th through Brutal Cave Records. I first heard of this band about 3 weeks ago when I heard the single "Radiant Moon of Aphos". I instantly looked up the album name printed on the cover and found nothing anywhere. I looked up Metal-Archives, nothing. Bandcamp, nothing. Their Facebook, nothing. All I knew from the video description was that it was set to release in July but with no official date. So I had to keep periodically checking to see if it was out and I didn't know about it being dropped on the 9th until the 10th. Fuck me right? Anyway, I knew I wanted to talk about it. But first, its worth noting that they had released an untitled EP last year and that there's no repeats, remixes or remasters of old songs on the LP. The first track on the record "Gathering Stormfires of the Perilous Want" might sound like an ordinary death metal song, but give it time. After a minute there will be one of my favorite uniqides about the genre. The inclusion of acoustic guitar. This one however has an ancient oriental sound as if its meant to sound old. After this break in the song, another tempo change happens where both the music and vocals have a groove. "Radiant Moon of Aphos" as I mentioned earlier has a great sounding main riff which perfectly fits the rest of the overall instrumentation. The guitarist, Matt Gornall has provided us with mostly chugs although his brief melodic moments shine very bright. "Limbless In Rapture" continues the heaviness and its time to bring up the vocals. While he might sound like any other front man, what separates Ali Lauder from everyone else is that he has a lot more power in his delivery than most. Next we have a calming interlude track titled "Tribute To The Ashen King". It's a peacefully way to bridge the gap that leads to "From The Embers to the Catacombs". Straight away the drums blast your eardrums further into your skull. "Sidereal Rites" starts off with another quick ancient sounding instrument before exploding back into the same hard hitting death metal we've been getting pummeled with from the get-go. And then there's a track like "He Who Bears The Key". Now with this one, its obvious that the band intends on keeping us listening with the interesting middle eastern sounding beginnings. This one also has it infused towards the middle of the song. If you want some straight forward death metal without all the extra jazz to spice it up, "Graven Challengers to the Rift" is your song. Nothing but unyielding death metal. "Vengeful Eye of the Magi" obviously has to have a desert tune. If the word Magi is in the title, the first thing that will come to most minds of millennials like myself who grew up watching The Mummy. The final track is "Gates to Eternity" but it only serves as a conclusionary instrumental consisting of an ancient sounding drum beat as if an army is marching to war. Now is this a perfect death metal release? No. Is it entertaining and worth your time? Absolutely. Is it enough to keep listeners engaged? I'd sure say so. I feel like this band is for fans of Hour of Penance or Hate Eternal, minus the constant Erick Rutan shreds. I'm going to give this debut a 7/10 rating. I'm definitely going to keep my eye on this band over the next few years to see what they do next. I'm sure they'll find new ways to improve upon music that is already good. Show your support by buying their digital album and EP on bandcamp because this full-length debut is not currently on amazon music. I'm not sure if they're on Spotify yet but you can check for me.

Not only more traditional, but multiple subgenres as well. Which three axeslingers would you want to see tearing it up on stage? In our "News, Views and Tunes", we discuss the concept of "Dad rock" and the new "Lisa Frankenstein" flick. When I think of hard work and integrity, I think of Erik Rutan. Having recorded two records with him at Mana Recording Studio, I have witnessed, first-hand, his intensity and workmanship at the recording console. He attacks music with the same relentless virtuosity. With Erik Rutan there is only one way: ALL THE WAY! Last year’s Hate Eternal record, “UponDesolate Sands” was my number one record of the year, which I covered on our year-end special. We had a great time talking about the creation of “Upon Desolate Sands” and the arduous task of learning a Cannibal Corpse set for their upcoming year of touring.Intro: “Dark Age of Ruin”Outro: “Upon Desolate Sands” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Legendary death metal unit MORBID ANGEL will unleash their ninth studio album on December 1st via Silver Lining Music and JVC in Japan. Titled Kingdoms Disdained, the record reunites founding guitarist Trey Azagthoth with Just one play of MORBID ANGEL's searing Kingdoms Disdained, and you'll realize that this is the only true current aural document of a world sinking into uncharted despair. "The album title says it all," says Tucker, "everybody's fed up and nobody can figure out how to fix it. We've got all these miniature wars in neighborhoods, cities, countries, and we've got people with varying opinions causing chaos, yet everyone is doing what they feel is right. Which all makes it feel like the world has reached a point of utter madness and confusion." As if fate constructed the moment, these forefathers of death metal found themselves witnessing the storm's eye as they prepared to create Kingdoms Disdained, deciphering it with their ferocious music via long-held Sumerian-based beliefs. "It's been written but nobody pays attention, because we erase our history," furthers Tucker. "We don't understand much about the Sumerian texts because things got erased, buried, and broken up. And for years, Trey and I talked a lot about the idea of those Gods waking up and coming back to show us that they're angry." Recorded at Mana Studios in St. Petersburg, Florida and produced by MORBID ANGEL with Erik Rutan (MORBID ANGEL, Cannibal Corpse, Hate Eternal, Six Feet Under, Belphegor), Azagthoth, Tucker and drummer Scotty Fuller (Annihilated; former Abysmal Dawn) created eleven pieces of devastatingly dynamic death metal. Compositions such as "Garden Of Disdain," "Architect And Iconoclast," and "The Pillars Crumbling" supremely illustrate Azagthoth's incredible creative alchemy with Tucker as well as his own incomparable guitar work. "We're always trying to paint pictures; to create images," notes Tucker, "and I think this album is a fair image of the world today, but taken from a different perspective; the perspective of those Gods who built this, who may be resting now but are starting to wake up." Kingdoms Disdained also features artwork courtesy of Irish mixed-media artist Ken Coleman, who created a series of pieces that further augment the stories being told. Don't walk meekly around the edge of Kingdoms Disdained, go all-in on the journey and MORBID ANGEL's intense importance to these times will be crystal clear. MORBID ANGEL's Kingdoms Disdained will be available on CD, vinyl, and digital formats. Preorders are currently available at THIS LOCATION where you can also hear opening track "Piles Of Little Arms." A special-edition boxset will be available to order shortly.

Here is the 31st installment of the Dreams of Consciousness podcast, featuring interviews with Black Fast's Aaron Akin, Artificial Brain's William Smith, and Topsy and Holm of Sanitys Dawn. These were recorded over three different nights during three different shows at Saint Vitus Bar in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Black Fast shared a bill with Hate Eternal and Vital Remains, and kicked major ass. I talked to their frontman/guitarist Aaron about the history of the band, their insane touring schedule, and what they'll be up to when the tour wraps up. Artificial Brain were a last minute replacement for Gath Šmânê as openers for Mitochondrion, Phobocosm and Auroch. I'd never officially met William before, but we have a lot of friends in common in the NY scene, including members of Grey Skies Fallen and his other band Buckshot Facelift. He's a hell of a frontman and a sweetheart of a guy. We talked about his onstage persona "Big Baby Brain" and the upcoming Artificial Brain album, as well as what Buckshot is up to. Sanitys Dawn were part of an insane six band Catbomb show that was headlined by the reunited Despise You. Their singer Topsy spotted me taking photos from the side of the stage and proceeded to literally get in my face. He made an impression, to say the least, and I figured that was as good a reason as any to put him and his drummer Holm on the podcast. At the end of our conversation, they said it was the first interview they'd done in 6 years. I promised them that as soon as I got back to Malaysia I'd get in touch with them for a real interview. Look for that to happen soon...ish. My thanks to everyone who took the time to talk to me, and to you for listening.
