Golf aficionados, brace yourselves for a heated debate! We're tossing the rulebook and questioning the controversial decisions of the United States Golf Association (USGA) that seem to be out of touch with the pulse of the game. From the questionable selection for the Top 100 teachers to the exclusion of Florida State from the college football playoffs, it's a swing and a miss in our opinion. We also can't ignore the stir caused at the Tiger Woods' Hero Open about the use of technology in golf. Hang tight as we take you through the maddening maze of absurd rules and debatable decisions. It's time to call out the elephant in the room - the USGA's perplexing decision to curtail golf ball distance. As PGA professionals, we openly express our discontent and explore the potential fallout. We question the likelihood of bifurcation in rules for professional and amateur players. The ramifications for ball manufacturers and the potential erosion of the USGA's relevance are grave concerns. Adding an extra layer to the conversation, we have Rory McIlroy sharing his thoughts on the issue. In the final act, we scrutinize the looming impact of the USGA's decision on the golfing public. With manufacturers potentially defying regulations by selling non-compliant clubs, we're anticipating a standoff between the USGA and manufacturers. Listen in as we forecast a future dominated by false handicaps due to players using non-compliant equipment. The clock is ticking, and the golfing world is on edge. Prepare to be enlightened, surprised, and perhaps even a little enraged. We're not holding anything back - because we believe the love of the game deserves nothing less.

Annika is often regarded as the greatest female golfer of our generation. During her 15-year, Hall-of-Fame career, she rewrote the LPGA and Ladies European Tour record books, won countless awards, and changed the way women's golf was played, viewed, and covered. She has amassed over 90 worldwide victories, including 72 on the LPGA and 11 Major Championships. Annika holds a record number of Rolex Player of the Year awards (eight) and Vare Trophies for the lowest scoring average in a season (six). As the only female to break 60 in an official event, she has been nicknamed “Ms. 59.” Perhaps most notably, Annika received worldwide media attention when she became the first woman in 58 years to play in a PGA TOUR event at the 2003 Colonial Invitational. Annika still tops the LPGA's All-Time Money List. In 2021 she made her first start in an official LPGA tournament since 2008, making the cut in the 2021 Gainbridge LPGA. A few months later she captured the hearts of the golf world when she won the U.S. Senior Women's Open by eight shots. It was her first United States Golf Association (USGA) event in 13 years and the victory gave her a fourth USGA title. She represented Europe as a player in eight Solheim Cups, was a vice-captain three times and captained the European team in 2017. She was also the victorious captain for the European Junior Solheim Cup team that came from a record four points down to win on U.S. soil for the first time in 2021.ANNIKA ONLINE | FOUNDATION

The United States Golf Association (USGA) is the governing body for golf in the United States and Mexico. They work alongside The R&A to administer golf, including producing and interpreting the rules of golf. The USGA conducts the US Open, US Women's Open and 12 other championships, but for golfers and greenkeepers in the UK, it's probably through their famous and fabled USGA greens that you'll probably have come into contact with them. USGA specification putting greens have been the standard bearer for greens construction for nearly 60 years and you'll proudly hear of golf clubs advertising that they have USGA-specification greens, while others have to make do with 'push-ups'. If you're interested in learning more about the different types of putting green construction, I'd urge you to speak to your greenkeeping team to find out more. In 2018 the specifications for USGA standard construction were revised and we were fortunate that at Continue to Learn 2019, USGA agronomist Elliott Dowling delivered a series of workshops to BIGGA members. Elliott is the former course superintendent at Cress Creek Country Club and the Ivanoe Club in Illinois and undertakes course visits, educational outreach and research throughout the region on behalf of the USGA. While in Harrogate, Karl took the opportunity to speak to Elliott about the work of the USGA and whether he thinks the method of greens construction is still as influential today as it was in the past. We also spoke about the contrasts between American and European greenkeeping and it was fantastic to gain an insight into the intricacies of the golf industry from the other side of the Atlantic. The Green Room Golf Course Podcast is produced by Karl Hansell, on behalf of the British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association. For questions, comments or concerns, you can get in touch by emailing karl@bigga.co.uk. You can also get in touch via social media using @BIGGALtd on Twitter we've also got a Facebook page where all the latest notices, news releases and information from BIGGA can be found. We're also on Instagram using @BIGGA_HQ. Subscribe and leave us a review on Apple Podcasts. The more people know about the sports turf industry, the more understanding people will have about the hard work of BIGGA members and other greenkeepers. Effective leaders are big, bold, outspoken individuals, who inspire confidence and loyalty through the sheer force of their dynamic personalities. Or, are they? In this week’s Confessions podcast, “Flexing for Success,” we talk to Steve Schloss, Chief People Officer of the United States Golf Association (USGA), about the leadership skills that introverts bring to the table, and why they shouldn’t be overlooked because of their more reserved personalities. “I’ve often said to people that if you want applause, you can talk all you want, but if you want results, you have to listen.”
Inspiration comes in many forms. That’s especially true in the C-suite, where leaders need to be flexible, agile, engaged, and objective in order to be truly effective at their jobs. Or, to put it in the words of Steve Schloss, Chief People Officer of the United States Golf Association (USGA), leaders need to master the four disciplines of conscious leadership, connected leadership, informed leadership, and influential leadership. We continue our two-part conversation with Schloss, who shares his insights on “Inspired Leadership.” “As I evolved my own personal style, I also learned that you can’t grow without taking risks based upon your own level of risk tolerance and… that the true meaning of leading a global effort is understanding what it means to be truly cross-culturally competent.”
