Former Springbok Captain Wynand Claassen has mauled the South African government for its sluggishness in updating anti-doping regulations. This blunder could've had the Proteas and Springboks playing without their national flag. In a candid interview with BizNews, Claassen is incredulous that the Department of Culture and Sport allowed two international competitions to proceed without sorting out these crucial regulations. He doesn't hold back on SA and World Rugby Boards either, slamming the Springboks' "Chappie" kit worn during the Rugby World Cup. Following an open letter to World Rugby, Claassen and his "partner-in-crime," former Bok captain Tommy Bedford, launched a blistering attack on the so-called "Gin and Tonic Board Room Brigade." Claassen asserts that World Rugby administrators live differently from professional rugby's gritty reality. The maze of rules they have introduced drives fans and aspiring rugby stars away from the sport. For the sport's excessive yellow and red cards, he offers a bold alternative to reduce head clashes and make the game safer for players. Claassen also calls on ex-players and seasoned captains who genuinely grasp the game to have a louder voice in shaping its future. Regarding his ongoing battle to declare Newlands Stadium in Cape Town a heritage site, he is not backing off, much like he did during his rugby-playing days as an indomitable eighth-man

Heyneke Meyer was still at high school when he told a teacher that he would one day become the Springbok head coach. Rather than encouraging the youngster, he was told this was a pipedream. This discouragement continued at university, but against advice to the contrary, he studied sports management, education, and “just about everything I believed was necessary for me to realise my ultimate goal of coaching my country. When my time came, and it would, I had to be ready. But few people believed in me.” Unknowingly, his coaching career would evolve along seven key principles of leadership, and these would only become apparent to him after experiencing the ebbs and flows of what is an extremely uncertain career choice. Michael Avery caught up with the coach who transformed the Bulls into a Super Rugby winning juggernaut and also the man who holds the unwelcome tag of losing against Japan, what these highs and lows have taught him about leadership in this inspiring 30 minute conversation.

Born in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape, Odwa Ndungane and his twin brother Akona initially dreamt of a career in football, but went on to become the only twins ever to play for the Springboks. During his remarkable 17 year career, Odwa earned the reputation as one of the most professional, humble, hardest working and dependable players on the rugby field. After a difficult start at the Sharks when he wondered if he was on the right path, Odwa is now a member of an elite group of players with over 100 caps for the Sharks, and at the time of his retirement, was their most-capped Super Rugby player with 135 appearances. His Springbok debut came in 2008, and he earned 9 test caps.  After retiring in 2017, Odwa applied the same focus and discipline he had on the field to life after rugby. He now owns his own construction business, and together with his brother, started the Ndungane Twins Foundation as a way to give hope and provide opportunity to children from disadvantaged backgrounds. In this episode he talks about his love of the game, what kept him motivated and focused during the difficult times, and how he prepared for life after rugby.

It’s not often people walk out the pub when the Springboks are playing, but that second half display against the All Blacks saw just that. Empty seats, which was also evident on the TV screens.
