SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Janie Barrera is founding president and chief executive officer of LiftFund, formerly Accion Texas Inc. Created in 1994, LiftFund has grown to be one of the nation's largest micro and small business lender. The nonprofit agency provides small loans and management training to microenterprises of all kinds — from startups to long-established businesses — and operates in the states of Alabama, Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. On Wednesday, Barrera participated in a webinar hosted by Connect Humanity. The title of the webinar was “Texas Border - Small Business Broadband Fund; Virtual Roundtable.”The webinar was held to provide more information about Connect Humanity's plans to build a $10 million fund to help finance the digitalization of small businesses in the Texas border region. The webinar was hosted by Jordana Barton-Garcia, a senior fellow at Connect Humanity. The webinar included entrepreneurs and local leaders that discussed the importance of investments in digital infrastructure, broadband affordability, and skills — and how this can act as a catalyst to help build the foundation for a vibrant South Texas economy. In her remarks, Barrera spoke about the challenges small businesses faced during the COVID pandemic. Small businesses that did not have a website were at a disadvantage, she explained. “I'm glad to be part of this conversation. I encourage more investments and funds like this,” Barrera said. She said there is accountability and evaluation in the project Connect Humanity is embarking on.“It's not well, ‘I think we're going to do this.' We know what the goal is. We're going to have a baseline. We move forward and (we will) be able to show, hopefully, dramatic findings in years two, three and four,” Barrera said.“So, it's short term, I believe, because the urgency is here. If we don't do something right now, we are going to miss an opportunity. So thank you Jordana for bringing me into the conversation.”To read the new stories and watch the news videos of the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service go to www.riograndeguardian.com.

If you are curious like me, You'll thank me later that I took this journey into the Metaverse Inner Circle (MIC) for you. While it wasn't quite like Dante's 7th ring of the Inferno, it was not a trip to the park either. What is the MIC, tell you in a minute. Let's back up. Who am I. I am Christine Russo, Industry Analyst in Retail Tech encompassing the digital and physical retail, the consumer industry, brands, real estate , urban development, logistics and more. If goods and services move, sell, are made, sold or housed – I talk about it. Well, not just talk about it. I specialize in the explanation of complicated topics and make them understandable to executives, C-suites, Boardrooms, Academics, Developers, Marketers and more. How do I do this? I host roundtables, invite-only Executive interviews, moderate panels for the NRF, shoptalk and more, provide commentary in the retail media and serve on Advisory Boards. I once had a tech founder say to me their solution is not digestable to a bumper sticker phrase – ok, fair. But it also doesn not have to be a droning diatribe of long-winded jargon-filled explanations only for people to lose the interest and zone out. That's where I come in and ps I am good at it. So I decided to venture into Metaverse Inner Circle. How hard could that be? Well, it was brutal but I survived and learned and Im here to share. I definitely took one for the team because I was not afraid to ask rudimentary questions. The same exact questions Executives would want to know. There was a bit of of disdain and it felt like, the in-the-know inner circle scoffed at my questions. This did not stop me. Let's get into it. So What Happened? Hello and welcome! If you are listening to this episode in real-time, it is now August and the start of a new school year is just around the corner. This upcoming year may not be your first but if you are like most teachers, memories of your first year of teaching might still feel like “it was just yesterday”. I know that I still get many of the same nerves, and sense of anticipation and wonder on the eve of every new school year upcoming school year just like that first year teaching. This episode is geared towards the new teacher. For them, their “FIRST” school year is just about to begin and they may need some grounding or words of encouragement before they begin their teaching journey. Are you a seasoned director? Don't worry, I think that you will find this episode helpful too as it might just bring you back to some of the important fundamentals of our profession. This episode contains fifteen responses from fifteen different directors. Each director has anywhere from a couple of years of teaching experience to being near or done with their career and enjoying retirement and ranging from elementary teaching to collegiate instruction.  In the show notes for this episode you can find time stamps with the names of each of these directors AND my full-length interviews with each if you want to go check out more of what they had to share about teaching and band directing. During this episode each response will be shared back to back with a slight pause in between so you can hear each answer without delay.  I think that you will quickly notice themes and recurring ideas emerging even from this sample of fifteen teachers. I hope that it will inspire you, motivate you, and quiet some of those nerves as they share lessons that they likely “learned the hard way” or wisdom that was revealed to them over the course of their teaching. The answers are in response to a hybrid of two questions:   “What advice would you go back and give your former self at the start of your teaching career? OR What advice would you give to a teacher in their first few years of teaching?” Enjoy!   Episode Overview #4 Rachel Pletke - LeSueur-Henderson, MN (02:05) #5 Anthony Boldt - Kasson-Mantorville, MN (04:08) #7 Steve Schmitz - St.Louis Park, MN (06:31) #8 Dan Tewalt - Wayzata, MN (07:37) #9 Matthew Potter - Chaska, MN (10:42) #10 Scott Sater (Ret.) - Shakopee & Backus, MN (10:57) #11 Dr.Doug Orzolek - University of St.Thomas, MN (16:01) #12 Caleb Rebarchak - Bellefonte, PA (16:55) #14 Dr.James Miller - Gustavus Adolphus College, MN (17:38) #15 Miles Mortensen - Minnetonka, MN (23:17) #19 Erin Holmes & Bradley Mariska - Farmington, MN (27:33) #21 Amanda Kaus - Rochester, MN (31:15) #23 Erik Hermanson - Cleveland, MN (33:03) #24 Geneva Fitzsimonds - Edina, MN (33:59) #25 Dr. Heidi Johanna Miller - Gustavus Adolphus College, MN (35:10) Conclusion I hope that you enjoyed this episode format! I am not sure about you, but listening through this it felt like I was sitting at a table with these fifteen awesome educators having a “virtual roundtable discussion”. I hope to be able to sprinkle episodes like this in  as I continue to build my bank of interview questions and responses with directors. So if you liked this format, there will be more like it in the future! As always if you enjoyed this episode or any other episode, consider leaving a review on any of the platforms that you listen to the show on. Itunes, Google Play, Stitcher, Spotify, or Facebook.
