The conversation, held by the turbulent Thames, focuses on the extreme challenges facing US institutions, both outside and inside its borders. The primary external challenge discussed is Russian aggression against Ukraine and the heightened tensions along the NATO frontier. Gaius is reliably told that any provocation, such as blockading the Russian shadow fleet or shooting down a Russian warplane, could lead to Mr. Putin's removal by his right-wing compatriots who believe he has supervised a bad war. 7. Bucharest 2008 and the Failed Bid to Prevent Russian Aggression. Serhii Plokhy (Professor of Ukrainian History at Harvard University) discusses how Vladimir Putin's powerful presidency, rooted in a manipulated super-presidential constitution, enabled him to assert the right to dictate which countries could align with the West. The April 2008 NATO summit in Bucharest was a critical turning point. Though the US, led by George W. Bush, favored inviting Ukraine and Georgia to join the alliance, Western allies, notably Germany, opposed the idea, leading to a split. The outcome—a promise of future membership with no specifics—was the "worst outcome possible." Putin used this weakness, starting a war in Georgia months later, effectively annexing territory and disqualifying Georgia from joining NATO due to territorial conflicts. This demonstrated that Ukraine and Georgia had exposed themselves to future Russian attacks by publicly seeking NATO membership without securing "meaningful Western support," meaning military aid. Domestically, Putin viewed the 2004 Orange Revolution, which rejected his preferred candidate Viktor Yanukovych, as a threat to his own power structure. Yanukovych later returned and, in 2013, was bribed and pressured by Russia not to sign an EU association agreement, sparking the Euromaidan Revolution which served as a stepping stone toward the 2014 Crimean annexation.

Edition No229 | 22-08-2025 Moscow delivers a message to Trump, with drones and explosions, trauma and terror. Last night, in the stillness before dawn, Russia hurled hundreds of drones and dozens of projectiles across Ukraine, and hit an American-owned electronics plant in Mukachevo, far in the country's west, near the EU border. Inside were hundreds of workers sheltering in place. By morning, the factory—owned by Texas-rooted, Singapore-registered Flex—was ablaze. This is an extraordinary act of aggression against US interests and investments. It's an attack on Europe too, and the concept of European security. For over ten years, this is what Ukraine has had to get used to, - endless broken agreements by Russia, betrayals and deceptions. Every step towards peace and mediation is snuffed out by Russian violence. Now, slowly and hesitantly, the US is starting to understand. For Moscow, this is called it business as usual. Unfortunately, for the US and Donald Trump it comes as a surprise and a sock. It shouldn't. The strike on US interests also seems to have forced a shift in Trump's tone. At the UN General Assembly today, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy again sounded the alarm over Russian aggression. And, family groups crossing the US border illegally reached an all-time high in August. This is a concern for Biden administration officials, as families have always been the hardest migrants to deport. Also, Canada and India are feuding right now over India's alleged potential involvement in a politically motivated killing of a Sikh Canadian activist.
