Send us a Text Message. This week on the Montana Outdoor Podcast your host Downrigger Dale caught up with Owen Willcox to talk about how he and his teammate Ziek Gordon pulled off a fantastic come from behind victory! Owen called in from the banks of Lake Oahe outside of Pierre, South Dakota where he and Ziek had just finished doing some pre-fishing for the 50th South Dakota Governor's Cup Walleye Tournament. This is a fascinating podcast as Owen goes into great detail about how he and Ziek overcame one of the toughest Walleye Bites that the Gov Cup has seen in a very long time! You will learn how Owen and Ziek were able to somehow get into seventh place with just three fish at the end of Day One of the tournament. Then you will hear about the discussion that Own and Ziek had that night. They decided to throw caution and their original plan to the wind and head to…. Well, you will have to listen to the podcast to find out where they went and how they went from being in 7th place and almost 18 pounds behind the leaders to winning the whole thing! What were they using on the end of their lines to pull that off? How many fish did they have to catch to get to get that magic 5? What was their final winning weight? When you listen you will learn the answers to those questions and many others. Plus, you will also learn about Owen's career as young professional fisherman on the National Walleye Tour! This was a VERY interesting part of the podcast as well since we rarely get to learn about tournaments outside of Montana. The National Walleye Tour takes Owen all across the country including the Great Lakes and even as far east as New York. Owen even gave some advice for other young men and women that might want to give the National Walleye Tour a try! Owen is only 20 years old but he is wise way beyond his years when it comes to fishing. Whether you fish tournaments a lot or never have you will for sure learn something from this podcast! Welcome back to Season 3 of the Journey to the Heart Podcast! After completing my Back to the Canoe Tour playing music from Bellingham, Washington all the way back to Mobridge, South Dakota, I am now continuing my paddle down Lake Oahe on the Missouri River towards the Gulf of Mexico. Currently I have paddled and portaged my canoe about 2500 miles over the last two summers from the Pacific Coast and now have another 2500 miles to go to reach the Gulf of Mexico. Can't wait to embrace what the river will bring on the rest of this journey. My guest for this episode is Ben Bruso also known by his social media handle, "Followmyleap". We met during my portage through the Rockies in 2022. Ben is an amazing individual who walked across America in 2021 and is now entering his third season as a Fire Lookout. Ben came out to meet me as he was making his way back to his lookout from Texas and it was awesome to finally record this podcast with him.

Man's Best Friend, that's right we are talking about dogs. The Rocky Mountain Elk migration is underway, learn where you can go to see it first hand and we discuss the hot debate regarding wolves. This is Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt with the radio show The Bend Radio Show & Podcast, your news outlet for the latest in the Outdoors & Western Lifestyle! Episode 157 Details BEC & Tigger are one week away from opening deer rifle season in their neck of the woods. Now is the time to take those last few practice shots. BEC loves to quote, "Aim Small, Miss Small" in which Tigger always loves to give her a hard time reminding her that's from the movie "The Patriot"... not a BEC quote! NEWS RECORD WALLEYE CAUGHT South Dakota's famed Lake Oahe, a reservoir inside the Missouri River water system, has produced what is speculated to be the next South Dakota state-record walleye. Aaron Schuck of Bismarck, North Dakota was fishing with a deep diving crankbait when a whopper walleye struck his plug. Official weighing on certified scales took place at Oahe Sunset Lodge and Steakhouse by the owner Lisa Moser, located near the town of Pollock, South Dakota. Aaron Shuck's walleye measured 33 inches in length with a heavy weight of 16.5 pounds beating a 23-year-old record! BEC has fished this area many times, both open water and ice fishing. Two thumbs up, it is BEC Approved! Looking for a great guide with accommodations? BEC recommends Loebs Lake Oahe Guide Service out of Pollock, SD. Give Josh a call and tell him that Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' said to! Josh Loebs, Fishing Guide Loebs Lake Oahe Guide Service https://loebslakeoaheguideservice.com/ E: loebslakeoahe@gmail.com P: 701.426.5832 WILDLIFE TRAFFIC JAMS IN COLORADO Tis the season that the quaint town of Estes Park, Colorado one of the entrances to the Rocky Mountain National Park is taken over by elk. Twice yearly elk migrations occur as large bunches of elk move out of the park and make a pit stop in Estes Park. Traffic jams occur as the elk cross streets or from gawking tourists trying to get pictures of these massive animals bedded down in residents' front yards to experience the golf course closed as it is a favorite hangout for the elk. The migration is not a quick one either, can take a couple of weeks as the various bunches move leisurely. The fall migration is a must-see as the massive bulls are herding the females but it is to be viewed with caution. The rut is on and the bulls can be aggressive. Check out thebendshow.com for videos of the Elk taking over Estes Park, Colorado. MAN'S BEST FRIEND, THE DOG Dogs are often one's first pet and are often looked upon as a member of the family. This week Jeff 'Tigger' Erhardt tests Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' on her knowledge of the four-legged, Man's Best Friend... The Dog. A fun round of Did You Knows, Facts, and the first part of a two-part "Dog Discussion". Tigger is a cattle dog trainer, having worked with many border collies and other cattle dog breeds. These dogs are both part of the livelihood on the ranch but also become parts of the family. DID YOU KNOW... Did you know a dog's nose print is unique, just like a person's fingerprint. Did you know a dog's sense of smell is extraordinary as it has as many as 300 million receptors while a human nose only as about 5 million. Did you know dogs when sleeping curl up in a ball to protect their organs? It is a natural instinct that goes back to when they were wild, before domestication, and vulnerable to predator attacks. Did you know that 3 (THREE) dogs survived the Titanic sinking? The dogs were in first class, including a pomeranian puppy that the owner wrapped in a blanket, acting as though it was a baby! Then another pomeranian and a Pekingese were rescued. (Sorry Jack... But Rose made it!... Barely) Did you know the tallest dog ever was a Great Dane measuring 44" tall! Did you know a Greyhound could beat a Cheetah in a LONG Distance Race! WESTERN STYLE Looking for the latest in Western fashion and style? Brent knows this reservoir inside and out and has great information on how to put limits of walleyes in the boat during the dog days of summer. On July 24, 2017, Jessica Reznicek admitted to engaging in acts of sabotage to stop the Dakota Access Pipeline, a 1,886 km long (1,172 miles) underground oil pipeline running through indigenous territories, crossing beneath the Missouri and Mississippi rivers, as well as under part of Lake Oahe near the Standing Rock Indian Reservation. Her actions resulted in 4-month delay in pipeline construction. Despite the fact that the pipelines were not running at the time so there was no chance of a spill and no one was hurt during the acts of sabotage U.S. federal Judge Rebecca Goodgame Ebinger later applied a domestic terrorism enhancement to Jessica's sentences doubling her prison term to 8 years locked up, followed by 3 years supervised probation. Last week, Reznicek's attorneys argued an appeal that the district court had inappropriately decided that her actions constituted a federal crime of terrorism. They are now awaiting a decision concerning the appeal. I have been following this case for a couple of years now and to get to highlight it again was important to me, especially now with the looming decision in regards to the appeal. For this show I got to talk with Charlotte from the Support Jessica Reznicek Network about Jessica's case. NWT Pro Chase Parsons takes a deep dive into trolling tactics for walleye on this JMO Podcast. No secret that leadcore trolling for walleye is popular and effective. Chase won big on South Dakota's Lake Oahe, winning the 2011 FLW by trolling leadcore with spinnerbaits in deep flooded timber. Parsons talks Lake Oahe, lead core trolling and how to troll spinnerbaits to catch walleye. Trolling spinnerbaits to catch walleye in flooded timber started on Lake McConaughy in Nebraska but as Chase discovered, this overlooked presentation wrinkle catches walleye wherever fish are relating to deep flooded trees and bushes like currently found on fisheries like Oahe, Sakakawea or Devils Lake. The hardest possible bass tournament is one where everybody is standing on even ground when it starts. That happened when the Bassmasters went to Lake Oahe in South Dakota. That's because there has never been a big-time bass tournament on Oahe before. No one had experience so they all were fishing it for the first time. Mark Daniels, Jr. proved exactly how good he was on this tough lake by winning it and cashing a six-figure check. Listen to MDJ tell you all about it. Joe Opager from FLW stops by to recap another great tournament season and previews the big upcoming FLW Forrest Wood Cup at Lake Ouachita in Arkansas this week. Who dies Joe think is going to win it? Dan Johnston comes by to talk about special patterns for the notorious "dog days of summer."
Paul Fosheim has been a member of the South Dakota Deaf Anglers for many years. He and his fellow deaf anglers get together at least once each year to fish together. This year, they were on the banks of Lake Oahe in central South Dakota. The South Dakota Deaf Anglers was created in 1982. This organization gives members of the deaf community an opportunity to learn more about fishing, and to meet others who share a similar passion. While there were cash prizes on the line for anyone with lady luck and skill on their side that day, that is not the reason they get together. This episode talks a little bit about their fishing experiences and what it means to fish while deaf. In this week’s show our guest is Ryan Ratigan a former host of the Mystic-Skeptic Podcast, he is also an attorney, activist and naturalist. We explore his involvement with movement to support the Standing Rock Sioux tribe in North Dakota. They not only want to reclaim their national sovereignty, protect their territory from corporations, but they want to preserve water resources and create a more ecological future for our descendants. As part of the Sojourners Series we explore the” Seven Generation Rule” which Ryan explains to be a source of inspiration for the principal of protecting the environment and honoring past and future generations. Ryan was a legal observer at Standing Rock and witnessed an almost military operation by the local police and and private contractors. This peaceful protestors or “protectors” have taken a stand against corporate interests since April 1, 2016. On March 6. 2017 a march on Washington was organized by The Indigenous Environmental Network. According to an article from PBS.org: “The protest comes as a federal judge in Washington is weighing a request by the Standing Rock and Cheyenne River Sioux tribes to halt construction of the last section of the Dakota Access pipeline pending the outcomes of their lawsuit seeking to stop the project. The tribes say that section of the pipeline, which will pass under Lake Oahe, a large Missouri River reservoir, will threaten their water supply, sacred sites and religious rights. The judge is expected to rule this week.”(BLAKE NICHOLSON, ASSOCIATED PRESS March 6, 2017 at 3:28 PM EDT) Below is Ryan’s post on Facebook that inspired this show: “I see a worldwide awakening as to who we are as natural, living beings on this planet. I see the current extremes of death, insanity, destruction, etc… as the catalyst that leads to our awakening. I have met many liberated beings in the last few months and these meetings have given me a renewed spirit of hope and optimism. I see our indigenous relatives guiding us on our collective paths towards a collective evolution; spiritual, individual, and relational. I see the divine love that exists within each of us coming out of its shell. This is not an easy evolution, however it is what our hearts and souls desire.” With little media coverage please visit the following websites for more information: https://www.democracynow.org/topics/dakota_access https://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2017/01/30/18796017.php https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dakota_Access_Pipeline_protests
Confused about what's really happening at Standing Rock? Lets get the facts: Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) is a pipe that is supposed to carry 570,000 barrels of crude oil per day from the Dakotas to Illinois. On July 27, 2016, The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for violating the National Historic Preservation Act when the agency issued final permits for a massive crude oil pipeline stretching from North Dakota to Illinois. This complaint asserts that the Corps violated multiple environmental and historic preservation statutes, focusing on the decision to reroute the pipeline from Bismarck, North Dakota to the doorstep of the Standing Rock reservation without adequate environmental analysis. The Dakota Access Pipeline project, also known as Bakken Oil Pipeline, would extend 1,168 miles across North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Illinois, crossing through communities, farms, tribal land, sensitive natural areas and wildlife habitat. The pipeline would carry crude oil from the Bakken oil fields in North Dakota to Illinois where it will link with another pipeline that will transport the oil to terminals and refineries along the Gulf of Mexico. The Corps granted permits for the pipeline in July 2016 under Nationwide Permitting. This process circumvents any kind of close environmental review and public process. The Lake Oahe crossing requires an additional approval—known as an easement—because it crosses federally owned land on either side of the Missouri River. It was this easement that the government confirmed would not be granted. On Feb. 8, the Trump administration granted the Lake Oahe easement, allowing the pipeline to be constructed under the Missouri River half a mile upstream of the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation. During this process thousands of protestors came to Standing rock, to try to hold off the giant machines that were coming in to drill the land. Despite some of the most organized and visible protesting a Native American cause has ever had, the cries fell on deaf ears. The protestors were shot with rubber pellets threatened and physically assaulted. The camps have since been destroyed and the pipeline is slated to be finished as quickly as possible. I met Frank, A Sioux medicine man at a Sweat Lodge he had created after the weekend of protesting. I had the privilege of sitting with him, letting deep hot steam cleanse me of some of the black thick toxic energy I have been carrying around with me since someone pulled the cord out of my head and I woke up matrix style and I realized that there was no autonomy, and we're all tiny puppets being controlled by a bunch of rape hungry deliverance good old boys. Frank is incredible, kind, soft, thoughtful and an incredible storyteller. I am honored to be able to tell a tiny part of his story. I implore you to get involved anyway you can. Stop supporting corporations who support environmental degradation (Wells Fargo, Caterpiller, Chevron Coca Cola, Ford, Monsanto, Nestle, Pfizer, Wal-Mart) Open your eyes. Watch out for fake news stories from bullshit alt right garbage collectors like (Washington Times, Activist Post, , Dc Gazette, Bloomberg.ma, usatoday.com.co, Denver Gaurdian) Become an active member of your community. Learn about who is trying to take independent or democratic seats in the upcoming 2018 congressional elections. It's simple, we can keep watching the titanic go down in flames or millions of us can take up a thimble and start bailing little bits of water out. We're fucked, don't get me wrong. But we can at least go down with dignity as a species who tried, not just a bunch of selfish cunts wasting away like Narcissus lost in our own reflection, thinking we're the star of our own mini Truman show. www.standingrock.org https://www.naha-inc.org http://lakotalaw.org

The fight to stop the Dakota Access Pipeline from being built on tribal land and under Lake Oahe has brought together hundreds of tribes in an historic show of unity. Non-indigenous people and organizations have also joined to support this Indigenous-led effort. There is a long legacy of extraction of fuels on Indigenous land without respect for their sovereignty or treaties and without regard for the impacts these projects have on people, animals and Earth. Currently, another project is about to start – a Uranium mine on Havasupai land near the Grand Canyon. The Uranium ore will be carried by trucks through Diné (Navajo) and close to Hopi land to White Mesa Mill, which is close to a Ute community. President-elect Trump has declared a plan to privatize Indigenous land for coal, oil and gas extraction. Our guests will discuss the history of Indigenous rights in the United States and the current effort to stop the Canyon Mine. For more information, visit www.ClearingtheFOGRadio.org.

In this episode, we explore the question “What to do about a DAPL?” We explore the sad topic of the Dakota Access Pipeline with Cody Snider and as much tact as we can. Let’s not sugar coat it, what’s going on at Standing Rock is scary. We take a substantial break from the jokes to educate ourselves on the DAPL. Join us in learning about 500 years of indigenous suppression and (maybe not) laughing along the way! Two places to... Read More Read More

Standing Rock Sioux David Archambault called on the United Nations on Tuesday to halt construction of the Dakota Access oil pipeline through tribal treaty territory and formally invited United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Victoria Tauli-Corpuz to visit the reservation. US government officials are now reportedly promising to temporarily halt construction of the pipeline on federally owned land, which makes up a significant chunk of the land on which the pipeline would be built. The Obama administration said it would not authorize construction on land at Lake Oahe, a focal point of protests. #NoDAPL Updates - On July 26, 2016 the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe was stunned to learn that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers had given its approval for the pipeline to run within a half-mile of the reservation without consultation or consent. The 1,172 mile Dakota Access Pipeline will cross Lake Oahe, the Missouri River and will disturb burial grounds and sacred sites on the tribe’s ancestral lands. After a motion hearing in DC, we'll talk about the pipeline's status. https://indiancountrytodaymedianetwork.com/2016/08/15/dakota-access-pipeline-standoff-mni-wiconi-water-life-165470 Shé:kon and Thanks for joining Native Trailblazers!
