In 2020, the distance in Australia that had seemed to no longer be such an issue became a challenge again. It was a time when in fact, the regions started to really come alive and with travel becoming more local as we can't go so far, regional areas are booming. Jane Hillsdon lives and works in regional NSW and is passionate about helping businesses to better market themselves, to their regions and beyond. Emma connected with Jane through Business Chicks and although they first met online, have now formed a friendship in the flesh too. When Emma was driving through NSW recently, it was Jane she reached out to to get the low down on her coastal area of Port Macquarie and Jane was every bit the local guide. She's also a passionate traveller and shares her love of exploring with us. In this episode we talk about the unique nature of "regions" in Australia, being that our country is so geographically spread. And what regional business and travel might look like in the future. Jane is an absolute gun marketer and you can listen to her podcast over at the "How to do Marketing Show", where Emma just happened to be a guest! See the show notes for more details!

Leveraging Time With Emma Mills Emma Mills joins us from Mi PA in Manchester, a supplier of Graham. What we want to talk to Emma about today is leveraging time as thats the heart of what they do. Emma's business helps people make the most of the time that they've got. Her team help them do the tasks and things that need to happen in the business but it's not necessarily the best use of the business owners time. Ultimately, Emma thinks that once somebody gets that it's up to you how you spend that hour and what that hour becomes worth. It could be from one end of the scale to another, depending on what you think is a good use of that time. Thats what Mi PA is all about. How are you looking to Improve Mi PA? When Emma started her business 13 years ago, she was on her own and has grown to 20 people now. The one thing that Mi PA has always been about is "How can we make that journey so much easier for business owners to find somebody, a service or a team that they can plug straight in". From her own business journey, because she employs all of her own staff, she knows how hard that can be. She knows, as a small business owner, for somebody to say "we can do this and you don't have to worry about it, just leave it to us". It takes off a lot of worry and stress.  Thats what the Service has been all about, the call handling, social media, PA support. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Looking-to-improve.mp4 Emma's always looking to make that better and how can she improve in the long term. Mainly, how can she take the stress away from that business owner. It is one of the biggest and scariest things, starting to get a team and will you get the right person. All of that takes so much time and effort and her dream is that Mi PA comes that one stop shop where people can rely on them to plug straight in. What else does Mi Pa do other than PA? So Emma can actually help in 3 different ways. She can either help you as a business owner in terms of the things that are on your task list. Things such as inbox, diary management, research, getting stuff done. Even personal PA support such as renewing things, buying presents. Thats what they call "Proper PA Stuff". The second area is operation support. This is where something has to happen repeatedly, where they can put a process behind it, like customer support. Anything that has to happen as part of delivering a service or product is frequently done within the business. The third area is the new enquiry service. So when a business gets a lead in, they help in various ways around that. Whether thats ringing them up as a follow up call, check if they want to book in for a call, or they've received information or an email, or simply see how their experience was. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/3services.mp4   Being a Young Business Owner When she started her own business 13 years ago, she definitely didn't have a clue what to do or expect. She always had a feeling that she wanted to own her own business but she knew she didn't have all the skill sets to begin with. As you know, owning your own business, you have to wear all the hats. Especially when its you on your own, then you get somebody, then you out source them. It's been a very much working progress for Emma. She would say to anyone who wants to start their own business, that you don't need all of the skills to begin with. As long as you have the motivation and the grit to do it, then you can learn a lot of the skills you need to be able to do along the way. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/young-Business-owner.mp4 Awards The first time MI PA won an award was for Best SME Support which was with The Talk of Manchester Awards and that was in 2015. Emma always says that at the end of 2014, she always had her own PA clients alongside her team. At the beginning of 2015, she finally said that she couldn't deliver the service anymore.

Magic silkworms spin love in the most romantic way. Night and day, Emma Souster spins thread on a spinning wheel in her home, causing calluses on her hands. Her thread makes cotton frocks for the women of Bourton-on-the-Water in the Cotswolds in England. Because she is always too busy spinning for someone else, her daughter, Velvet Briar Rose Souster, wears clothes made from the scraps. Most of the time, Velvet even sews them together herself. Now 15 years old, she needs a pretty dress for the winter Cotswolds Ballroom Dance. When Velvet was two years old, her father died of pneumonia in the winter frost. Heartbroken as could be, her mother never remarried, leaving Velvet and her mother to fend for themselves alone. However, her aunt lives in London, and her uncle is a wealthy banker, so Velvet often spends time on the train visiting her aunt and uncle, hardly making ends meet for herself and her mother. According to her aunt, a fairy godmother gave magic silkworms to Velvet's grandmother in her youth, and her grandmother gave them to her aunt for safe-keeping, not her mother. Years ago, the silkworms spun a wedding dress for Velvet's mother, but when her father died the "one-dress-in-a-lifetime" magic of the silkworms' spinning had already run out for her mother, or so her mother had been told. Velvet promises her aunt not to tell her mother about borrowing the silkworms and will return them on her next trip to London. Her aunt secretly plans to never talk to Velvet again once she gets back the magic silkworms. Upon returning home, Velvet finds her mother spinning at her wheel. The morning of the dance, she wakes up looking for answers from the magic silkworms. The worms, which she hid under her bedroom floorboards, are gone. As Velvet walks into the cottage kitchen, she finds her mother sitting at the spinning wheel, glowing. The magic silkworms visited Velvet and her mother, making each of them a glorious dress for the dance. As it turns out, Velvet meets a suitor at the dance who courts her, and so does her mother. In the meantime, Velvet's mother receives word that her sister's husband has gone to jail for fraudulent business dealings. In fact, Velvet's disheveled aunt busts into the cottage one afternoon unannounced when Emma is out doing errands at the market. When Emma comes back from town, she walks through the door with her suitor on her arm. The evil auntie runs from the cottage without taking the silkworms with her. To this day, the magic silkworms will spin a dress for anyone looking for love.

Today, I'm joined by Emma Sumner, one of the youngest authors at Self-Publishing School. She has inspired many other children to write books. Emma decided to write her first book when she found out her dad was writing a book. Her dad gave her the challenge to write 150 words and create a few characters, and he would help her write her first book. She was up for the challenge and came up with her new book's first few sentences within a week. "I was thinking of the different traits that I'd want to have, and I put those into each of the characters." Her writing process was free form as she would write down all the ideas that came to her mind then create a story around her ideas. Emma wrote for her age group as she wrote her book as a book she would enjoy to read. "When I first started writing, it was to entertain myself. Then it just grew from there!" The book writing process has lessons that come with writing and publishing. "The biggest lesson I learned is that you can't let people judge you." She understands that not all people are going to like her book. Additionally, Emma says that you have to focus on writing your book for yourself and not writing for others. Listen in to find out how Emma leveraged her family for her launch team, her restaurant partnership, her advice on marketing your book and how she landed her first speaking gig. Being a female founder isn’t easy, especially when you’re in the business of breaking taboos. In this episode with Emma Sayle, the founder and CEO of KK Group known for brands Killing Kittens, SafeDate, and Sistr, we explore the link between financial and sexual confidence, the highs and lows of being a ‘’sex-entrepeneur,’ feminist awakenings, and what’s next for the sex and adult industry. Follow Emma on instagram @emsayle333 and twitter @emmasayle----Bio:Emma Sayle, Founder and CEO of the Wearekk brands; Killing Kittens, Safedate, Sistr and The SisterhoodIn 2005 there was nowhere women could go to feel in control and explore their sexuality in a safe environment, so Emma created Killing Kittens. KK has grown in to a fierce army of over 160,000 sexually liberated people around the world, through events hosted from London to New York, Venice to Sydney on top of a global online community platform. Popular press regularly pronounces Emma a leader in female sexual liberation and empowerment. When Emma started Killing Kittens 15 years ago, she wanted to create a brand that stood for women and want they wanted. Greater awareness of female sexuality and sexual freedom was slowly becoming more socially and commercially acceptable, but there was still a long way to go in an industry that claimed to be for women but run almost exclusively run by men. She knew that to empower women sexually, it had to be with a business that put them first. Since setting up the first parties, Emma has fully expanded the business, which now operates both on and offline. May 2020 sees Emma launching the hotly awaited KK app (think Facebook meets Bumble) as well as virtual workshops offering sex education and advice for singles and couples. During lockdown, KK also became the world leader in virtual adult parties, creating world-wide press coverage for their virtual adult parties, held weekly across all major time zones from London to New York and Sydney. Emma understands that a successful business can’t be built without a passion and a team who believes in it just as much, and that one must have fire in the belly to take on an industry that is almost universally run by men, like the adult and ‘sex-tech’ industries. Unfortunately, there is still a huge amount of bias and misconceptions to address, but Emma has never once doubted her belief to lead the business and keep pushing the boundaries. It is true, sadly, that sexual discrimination is still alive and kicking in many sectors, across all levels, and many women struggle to be treated with the respect they deserve. She has learned that the best way to deal with the negativity is to stick to the facts, stick to the evidence; track your achievements, demonstrate your successes and let the facts and figures do the talking. In 2018, she led the business through a funding round. The first ever public crowdfund for an adult sector brand of this nature and closed the round at 118% overfunded. The second funding round closed completely funded in just four days – raising a total of £1m over the two rounds. The latest funding round has again closed overfunded after just a few days. The Wearekk portfolio of brands, including Killing Kittens, now also includes Sistr, a dedicated platform for women to connect, share and learn from one another, plus Safedate, an app for anyone wanting to stay safe whilst online dati

What do you do when you love making money but it’s never supposed to be talked about?  This is the conversation I have with Sarupa Shah who always knew she had healing qualities but also had an MBA.  She knew she wanted to make money in her business. Emma talks about how refreshing it is to hear the conversation about being comfortable talking about making money.  It’s not about making money in a mercenary way.  This is something Sarupa had to rationalise, even from the times in her corporate world where people couldn’t believe how she was able to make the money from the experience she had.   “Particularly as women, we want to say we’re not doing it for the money, but if we are not doing it to earn money, then there are no brownie points for doing this.”  Money is simply an exchange of value for value.  We pay for something we need and the person receives that value.  It provides a commitment.  We can all go on free calls, free webinars and never implement anything because we have no real investment, other than the time we have spent.  Money is a stronger investment.  Emma mentions how she talks a lot about the mindset and the beliefs we grow up with and how this can affect our beliefs about money too.  When Emma digs deep into the beliefs about money and some of the experiences they have and the examples they give about what they think about money, it sets the value for themselves and the belief about how money comes around.   Sarupa doesn’t talk about spreadsheets and spending but from that point of the relationships with yourself.  Money is an ally that will enable you to do the things you want to do, homes extensions, holidays etc.  When the people we work with are invested they are more likely to implement, grow and receive the work we do with them when we invest, respect and appreciate ourselves.   “It’s just me, why would anyone want to pay me for that?”  A can of worms can open up and every belief we hold can come to the surface.   Emma talks about the belief of “if you work hard, you will do well” and Sarupa talks about how she believes we need to work smarter.  Sometimes we need to look at the reality and assess whether we are really turning up to our desk to productive work, rather than the constant thinking in our head, doing it all and feeling like nothing is working.  There’s no rhythm or consistency because people are not really showing up in their work.   Did you have one turning point that made you realise you can change the way you think about things or was it a series of things that happened?   Sarupa shares that she was a terrible employee but when she was running her own business she came to realization that she was running off her savings and had to remember that her family used to call her “lucky devil” who always believed she could make things happen.  She could see she was making a difference in other people’s lives and wondering what was wrong with her then.  Her money work was born then, she had a lot of judgement about being wrong or greedy and had to deal with that. Emma shares her experiences of her network when people ask to work for free, or for the exposure or a reference.  Sarupa shares that she’s not a fan of trading skills because the energy and investment becomes imbalanced.  The exchange of swapping money is really important and allows us to grow with that investment.   What steps do the listeners need to take to build on the money story?    It’s about being honest with ourselves and look at the story you are telling yourself.  Take a long hard look in the mirror and look at what’s not working, what can you do about moving through the uncomfortable feelings and the other stories that come up.  Being able to be honest and allowing yourself to get support in.  Stop looking at getting support in as being a failure.  We need to give ourselves the support we need and explore the inner work about our value, our courage and addressing the stories, beliefs, excuses and fears.    That way we explore and break old patterns and change habits so that we do things differently.  That way we can write a new money storey.   Where to find Sarupa Shah The Abundance Aunt Column in the Spirit and Destiny Magazine https://thesoulagentblog.com/  has resources and information on Sarupa’s work.   To get in touch with Emma, you can contact her by email and book a call to talk about how to help you perform at the next level without the fear doubt or overwhelm.

When Emma (16) received a cortical visual impairment diagnosis at age four, CVI literature was not widely available. The consensus was “this is just what she has, live with it,” says her mother, Lynn Elko. Her family didn’t know great gains could be made. They didn’t know how to help her learn or meet developmental milestones. Then Lynn discovered what kids with CVI can accomplish with strategic, appropriate interventions that give them visual access to the world. And that changed everything. After six months living with appropriate CVI strategies in place, Emma made tremendous progress in many areas, including feeding, communication, social engagement and literacy. While Emma’s renaissance has overjoyed her family, there is also the heartbreak of not knowing sooner. Over the years they tried ocular approaches, which turned out to be “horrible and so inappropriate,” says Lynn. “We were trying everything. I think that’s what is so hard, that I missed it. And everyone in the field missed it.” The system broke down in many places – we hear this story time and again. “We cannot let other kids be Emma. We cannot let them go without appropriate interventions and services and knowledgeable staff and knowledgeable providers – because there’s hope for our kids. Because they can learn. Because they can make themselves less vulnerable when they make themselves more able. Because they’ll have a better quality of life when they’re given an opportunity to participate in it.” I couldn’t have put it better myself. Emma Gannon is an author, blogger, and marketer, and she recently released her first book Ctrl Alt Delete: How I Grew Up Online with Ebury Publishing. She was one of the first bloggers I started following when I decided to move to London. I love her charming but no-nonsense take on life and her adventures in this city are always exciting to read about. I'm thrilled to say that you can look forward to hearing from her in an upcoming episode of the podcast! When Emma announced that she was publishing a book, I knew it would be just as fun and thought-provoking as everything else she does. In Ctrl Alt Delete Emma chronicles how she grew up, and ultimately built a career, online - complete with cybersex, catfishing, and many an MSN convo. The book is fun and lighthearted in places, but also deep and philosophical in others as she grapples with such topics as bullying and feminism. There's a whole lot of nostalgia too, for all of us who fumbled our way through growing up in those early days of the Internet. In this episode we talk about the power of self-awareness for designing a life you love, setting online boundaries, creating a work/life balance that works for you, and finding inspiration.
