In a first father-daughter interview on the podcast, Bill and Emma Dauster discuss important science communication and policy issues, including: – Approaches that Bill, a longtime public policy expert, has found scientists employ that are particularly effective in getting their message across to politicians and common missteps to avoid – Notable differences between persuading a scientific advisor compared to a politician that a research project is important and/or deserving of funding – How Emma’s science background as a PhD student in Neuroscience and Behavior informs her views on politics – When Bill was working in the Senate and the White House, which qualities and skills did effective scientist-staffers he supervised or worked with seem to possess – The best entry points for scientists who want to get into the policy arena, including at the local, state, or federal level and Legislative Branch compared to Executive Branch – The importance of diversity in research – Scientists are trained to “follow the data”, but public policies are shaped by, and embedded with, political considerations like the “equity” of a proposal, not just how efficient it may be, or the power of certain group in society to bend a policy to its benefit, for example. How these factors can challenge scientists interested in policymaking, as it’s not just “all about the data”

Self Publishing School : Learn How To Write A Book And Grow Your Business
Today, I'm joined by Emma Sumner, one of the youngest authors at Self-Publishing School. She has inspired many other children to write books. Emma decided to write her first book when she found out her dad was writing a book. Her dad gave her the challenge to write 150 words and create a few characters, and he would help her write her first book. She was up for the challenge and came up with her new book's first few sentences within a week. "I was thinking of the different traits that I'd want to have, and I put those into each of the characters." Her writing process was free form as she would write down all the ideas that came to her mind then create a story around her ideas. Emma wrote for her age group as she wrote her book as a book she would enjoy to read. "When I first started writing, it was to entertain myself. Then it just grew from there!" The book writing process has lessons that come with writing and publishing. "The biggest lesson I learned is that you can't let people judge you." She understands that not all people are going to like her book. Additionally, Emma says that you have to focus on writing your book for yourself and not writing for others. Listen in to find out how Emma leveraged her family for her launch team, her restaurant partnership, her advice on marketing your book and how she landed her first speaking gig. Show Notes [02:37] What inspired Emma to write her first book. [04:19] How Emma decided on the characters and plot for her first book. [05:45] The process of her book unfolding to her first draft. In this episode, Emma shares with us her journey from giving everything, but not getting where she wanted, and the impact that had on her mental well being.Emma shares how being one of a small number of women working in a male dominated industry has affected her confidence. How Emma has had to battle with herself to go to the gym not because of the training, but because of her lack of confidence to walk into the gym. We open up a conversation about body IMAGE, rather than body CONFIDENCE. And how Emma has managed her relationship with her body, being specifically mindful about the language she chooses to use regarding her body.We talk about the potential relationship between anxiety and confidence, and that Emma believes there is a very clear link between the two things.Emma talks to us about how she has to continually manage her anxiety, and exactly how she does that. Emma shares the reasons as to why her sister inspires her so much, and the special relationship they have which has been an integral part of Emma's life.We spoke about the importance of recognising you have anxiety in order to take control of it, and that anxiety can make you feel you're not good at things you're great at.Emma talks about how she felt like she had to be a role model, whilst at the same time feeling like she couldn't be if she suffered from anxiety. We have a wonderful conversation about how you can be confident even though you may still be managing anxiety. This is a really special episode, Emma is softly spoken, kind and very humble to say the least. As we continue our journey to explore this topic, it never ceases to amaze us how confidence has literally impacted everyone, regardless of your status, experience, profession or background. It plays a part in all our lives, and yet still isn't something that is being talked about enough, or better yet, something that is being understood in order to enhance and enrich our experience of life.If you enjoy the podcast, please SUBSCRIBE to our show and leave a review. What if you could step out onto the stage of life, into the full spotlight of your gifts, and profoundly impact your ideal audience every time by finding your powerful voice?Finding your powerful voice as an entrepreneur is often one of the most difficult challenges that we face. But is it difficult because we have hidden our ability to access our powerful feminine power voice, and given way to an inner patriarchal model that causes us fear and self-doubt?Can an inner exploration of our feminine talents and qualities improve not only our life and business but also change the world around us in a truly meaningful way?Don't worry; I am not going to leave you hanging with these tantalizing open-ended questions. My lovely guest, Emma Back, is here to share some of her insights on this fascinating subject. Including going on to develop full-blown careers in music and experiencing breakthroughs in relationships, public speaking, and other areas where "voice" and self-expression are essential. And if that's not enough inspiration, Emma performs both nationally and internationally. She is currently working on her 2nd full-length album, titled "Strife & Joy," which investigates the connection between inner and outer suffering and bliss, and how we work to navigate the ever-changing landscape of what it is to be a human being. Emma Lovell had a flash of inspiration on the plane one day that led her on the most incredible journey of entrepreneurship and TV fame, and she managed to do all this while being the mother of two small children. It was her children who inspired her to pioneer the Cozi Go: a canopy that protects babies from light and noise to enable them to sleep more easily in public places. Her idea was so good that she was invited onto the very first series of Shark Tank and walked away with the investment she needed to get the business off the ground and dominate the marketplace. See some of Emma’s top tips below: ** When you’re designing and developing something new, always assume it’s going to take a lot longer than you originally planned. Pick a figure and double it! ** Be prepared for there to be a big difference between the quality of a prototype and the first mass-produced batch of products. Make sure you have external quality control to check this. ** If you’re letting someone down, make damn sure you have a clear plan to resolve the situation. ** If you’re getting a business off the ground, have a mentor in place that you can be accountable to. This could be a director, investor, or even someone from a pier group. ** Do things at your own pace. Make sure you can actually handle the consequences of business growth. In this episode of Business Brain Food you will learn: ** How Emma brought an invention to market with no design experience ** The pros and cons of manufacturing in China ** What it was like to be there at the very beginning of Shark Tank ** How to play it when you’re on Shark Tank ** What Emma did to solve the problem of dead stock ** Influencer marketing explained Resources mentioned in this episode: ** Enter our competition to win a 17,000 AUD coaching program. Emma Montgomery is a wife, mother, online coach, and athlete for Bowmar Nutrition. Once a manager of a bank, she is now an entrepreneur with a lucrative online coaching business. She shares how this transition impacted her life both physically and mentally and what it truly takes to launch a successful nutrition and fitness business! Today, she has more than tripled her income, enjoys more time with her family, and spends her days coaching fabulous women from all walks of life! Powerful Quotes to Remember: You can truly make a living out of your passion, you just have to put the work in. The most successful approach you can take is the one you’re actually going to stick to. I didn’t realize my business could be bigger than a side hustle. I didn’t do it for the money; I did it because I enjoyed it. Why am I NOT doing this? I can’t be afraid of not making enough money, not having that job, or comfort—that’s crazy. If it comes to sink or swim, I’m always going to swim. There’s no better way to learn appreciation for something than understanding what the absence of that thing feels like. This is not all happening to me, it’s happening for me. There’s a lesson to be learned. The steeplechase is not a race people normally talk about let alone know what is involved in it. Do you? Emma Coburn does. Her specialty lies in the 3000 meter steeplechase. Emma is as real as it gets, and shows the real side of herself here. She tells us of her adventures from not liking to run to working hard to become a world champion. She believes that all the various water and mountain sports she participated in growing up attributed to the steeplechase clicking with her. She discusses her roommate and the unique culture at her university that bonded her teammates, made a huge impact on her career, and made her big goals seem more attainable. I hope many of us can name at least someone who has inspired us or made an impact on us with running. Emma goes into elaborate detail about what she was thinking and feeling during this year’s 2017 World Championships in London. She shares her strategy during the race that led her to win. The race was not all physical, as she recalls the mental shifts needed while dealing with things that unexpectedly happened. Today's Guest Emma Coburn Emma Coburn is the first woman to win a gold medal at the 2017 World Championships in London, and received a bronze medal in the 3000 m steeplechase at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. She is the organizer of the Emma Coburn’s Elk Run 5k in Crested Butte. What You Will Learn About How Emma learned about work ethic and professional attitude as part of her training. What her journey looked like that got her from being just a kid living in Crested Butte to receiving a gold medal at the World Championships. How Emma showed her support to her New Balance sponsor after her race. How she worked around Rule 40. What yearly event Emma and Joe organized to be held in Crested Butte. Inspirational Quotes I think what was challenging with running is that it’s really difficult, it hurts, almost every day. Running wasn’t always my number one thing, and it really wasn’t what defined me growing up. What took me a while to really love running was getting over the fear of the individual side of it, and learning to cope with that stress and those pressures of having your performance completely rely solely on you. I thought the water jump was super fun. The very first time I tried it, I nearly cleared it, and it was like, oh, this is great. I wish I was doing this years ago. I do think though there is a, um like a snowball effect. If you see the successes of people before you, and you just want to build on it. And then when you’re gone, that people want to build on your success. And it builds and builds. The very first second I crossed the line, it felt incredible and it felt like a hard earned victory, but, umm, that I was incredibly proud of. It still feels very special to this day. And a little bit, still, of that dream come true. In 2006 she left psychology behind to become a chartered accountant so that she could create a financially secure life for her self. In 2009 she qualified and headed off to live in the USA, where she worked with Harvard Business School on a project in counter-terrorism analysis. Whilst living in the USA she began to feel that she was not in alignment with herself, but had no idea of how to deal with these feelings of being lost. So in March 2010, she asked her mother to come and visit. During her mother's visit, Emma was driving them to New Mexico, when she had a car accident in the depths of the Mojave desert. This was a freak accident in which Emma watched her mother die. Emma promised that she would use the pain of the accident to live a life where she would help the world. It took her a long time to realize how this would come to fruition, and so she had several attempts at trying to build a life that was meaningful. Her first attempt was to find meaning by becoming a business analyst where she worked at Fitch Ratings in the leveraged finance department. Three years into her new career she had encountered a few roadblocks, including being hit by a car and suffering two mental breakdowns. It was after the second breakdown that she went on sick leave and decided to set up a chartered accountancy practice with the tagline: modern accountants, with old-fashioned values. This was her attempt to do good in the world by changing the way business was conducted, especially in light of all that she had witnessed in the financial services arena. She found that she enjoyed the freedom of not having a boss, but was soon to fall into a depression once she realized that the freedom alone was not enough to bring her fulfillment. In the summer of 2017, she realized that she was not achieving the promise that she had made in the desert seven years earlier. She decided she would sell her flat and go traveling around the world, working as a holistic accountant, and expanding The Conscious Networkers. She now uses her psychic gifts throughout all of her work in order to create a life where she is fully aligned with all that she is meant to be, in order that she can be fully balanced in her body, mind, heart, and soul. It is this holistic approach that she has used to give birth to The Conscious Networkers.

So, let's talk, how to get more confident! Because one believes in oneself, one doesn't try to convince others. Because one is content with oneself, one doesn't need others' approval. We share our personal stories. How Emma went from 'the shy' kid to becoming pretty darn confident in herself (hell yeah). Do you have the inner fraud police living inside of your head? Those are the thoughts that tell you that you’re not good enough to do what you want to do. This type of thought pattern is known as “imposter syndrome.” It can be described as a negative highlight reel, where you see all of the times that you’ve made mistakes or haven’t lived up to your own expectations, and you see those negative moments as the whole truth. Today I’m speaking with Emma Stroud, who is an entrepreneur, comedian, writer, coach, mentor, improvisor and mom. She has studied and practiced improvisation for 25 years, having started off by going to clowning school. She often uses humor and storytelling to get her point across. She joins us today to talk about imposter syndrome: how to recognize it and, most importantly, how to get over it. On this episode, some of the topics you’ll hear discussed include: The physical symptoms of imposter syndrome, and how to use those clues to turn your reactionary thoughts in a different direction. How vulnerability can quiet imposter syndrome. Three questions to ask yourself to help combat feelings of inadequacy. How Emma has used comedy to tame her own imposter syndrome.
