33 Variations (The Comedy Theatre Melbourne, Australia) (review)An obsession, a love story, family dysfunction and a two century-old mystery combine in the witty and deeply moving play 33 Variations, a theatrical event that brings together the most prestigious cast ever assembled on an Australian stage.Dr Katherine Brandt is a musicologist trying to solve the riddle of why one of the world’s greatest musical geniuses became consumed by a forgettable piece of music by a mediocre composer, and how his obsession inspired a spectacular masterpiece. Moving between the past and present, the play interweaves Beethoven’s struggle to complete his magnificent Diabelli Variations with Katherine’s search for answers. Meanwhile, Katherine’s daughter Clara seeks to connect with her mother as they face the greatest challenge of their lives.  Starring in a role made famous by Jane Fonda on Broadway is Ellen Burstyn, the legendary Oscar, Tony and Emmy Award winning actress known for The Exorcist, Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Requiem for a Dream and most recently, Netflix’s House of Cards. Joining her in a sensational ensemble is Lisa McCune as Clara, William McInnes as Beethoven, Helen Morse, Francis Greenslade, Toby Truslove and Andre de Vanny.Featuring live performances of Beethoven’s magnificent music by renowned pianist Andrea Katz, the profound 33 Variations will be one of the theatrical highlights of 2019!For more information visit  https://marrinergroup.com.au/shows/33-variations Theatre First RSS feed:   https://feeds.megaphone.fm/ivetheatrereviews Subscribe, rate and review Theatre First at all good podcatcher apps, including Google Podcasts, Apple Podcasts (formerly iTunes), Stitcher, Pocket Casts, CastBox.FM, Podbean, ACast etc.If you're enjoying Theatre First podcast, please share and tell your friends. The qualities that endear Australian audiences to William McInnes as an actor are the same that endear him as a writer. It’s that wry, laconic voice and the affectionate, authentic take on Australian life. Loved for his iconic TV roles in Blue Heelers, Sea Change and The Time of Our Lives, McInnes has also won acclaim for film roles including Unfinished Sky and My Brother Jack. In recent years, he’s devoted increasing attention to writing. He’s the author of several works of memoir and the novel Cricket Kings. His latest book, Full Bore, is about Australian artefacts and memorabilia and offers a very funny and perceptive take on Australia’s popular culture and sporting obsessions. At Montalto Vineyard, William discusses his career and creative endeavours with Melbourne author John Harms.

You might remember William McInnes from Seachange, or Blue Heelers, but what you may not know about him is that he can really tell a story. He’s been doing it for the past 30 years, first as an actor and later as a writer. William has written over 11 books. A lot of them, around the themes of growing up in Australia.  And his latest, Fatherhood, is a personal tribute to Aussie dads everywhere. Mia’s conversation with William was a rollercoaster. One minute they were laughing uncontrollably, the next they were crying. William lost the love of his life, his wife Sarah in 2011. He raised their two children, Clem, and Stella by himself. He knows hardship and he isn’t afraid to share what he’s learned or get honest about his feelings.  This interview isn’t about grief or loss, it’s about a man doing the best he can for his family. I once heard Lisle Jones remark “I am married to the Theatre, but the Ballet is my mistress!” He is a man who relishes any discipline as long as it can produce a good story with clarity, passion and skill. An accomplished actor and director, he is from a school where you served an apprenticeship, learning how to craft your work on the job. By watching senior actors and devouring any experience that came your way.His was a time when an Australian actor would be obliged to travel to England to carve a career and further opportunities. After a time in London, in various roles, he was drawn back to Australia with a unique proposition – the opportunity to head an actor-training course in Western Australia. For 12 years Lisle Jones oversaw the Acting faculty at The West Australian Academy of Performing Arts and the training of countless successful graduates. His students included Marcus Graham, Frances O’Connor, William McInnes, Robert Taylor and Hugh Jackman. At age 88, he continues to teach acting … a craft in which, he says, “you can never stop learning” …… he is driven by his passion, an immense curiosity and a desire to make the actor the best they can be.Lisle has immense knowledge, an opinion on everything and many wonderful anecdotes. For those who know Lisle, you will find this conversation enlightening, great nostalgia and re-affirming – if you are about to meet the man – sit back and enjoy. You are in for a treat!
