If you're constantly cycling on and off the pill in the hope that the next time you get off your skin has sorted it's s*** out, then you need to listen to this Unfortunately whilst you're on the pill, it's masking a HUGE underlying driver of acne being hyper-sebum secretion. But there's a lot more to acne than just a hormonal imbalance and many systems of weakness that you can focus on whilst you're on the pill to reduce the likelihood that your acne will come back with a vengeance once you're off the pill. But don't stress, we asked our Post-Pill expert at Orenda Phoebe Ackland to come onto the podcast to share the exact strategy she uses with her clients so they can break the viscous cycle of going on and off the ocp. In this episode, Phoebe will discuss: What post-pill acne is and why it occurs When you need to start the internal work before you come off the pill How the gut, liver, lymphatics and stress response plays a crucial part The importance of good quality skin care Signs to look out for that show you it may not be the best time for you to come off the pill (p.s any time is a good time, but if you want to avoid hectic breakouts once you come off - you have to choose wisely) The diet strategy you need to implement To book in a consultation with Phoebe, head to the link here *Disclaimer: The content provided in this podcast is for informational purposes only and is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. How Your Posture and Mobility Cause Shoulder Pain and Injury

Tom Nikkola Audio Articles

The spring and early summer is a common time for overuse injuries and other joint pain. Shoulder pain being one of the most common. It's that nagging ache in your shoulder that refuses to let up. Maybe it comes and goes, maybe it's a constant throb, but either way, it's starting to interfere with your daily life. Now you're here, asking the important questions: "Why do my shoulders hurt?" "What are the causes of shoulder pain?" and crucially, "What can I do about shoulder pain?" The good news is, you're not alone. Shoulder pain affects millions of people worldwide, making it a public health concern. A study in the Journal of Physical Therapy Science indicates that the prevalence of shoulder pain in the general population could be up to 66.7%.Takahashi, N., Aoba, Y., Shiozawa, H., & Aizawa, J. (2019). Effect of posture on shoulder muscle activity during smartphone use. Ergonomics, 62(10), 1316-1324. And just like you, many people are searching for answers. Hopefully, by the end of this article, you'll have found most of those answers. If not, leave a comment or post your question. The Complex Design of the Shoulder: A Blessing and a Curse Your shoulder isn't just a singular entity. It's a complicated system, a mechanical marvel, that has been designed for an impressive range of motion. The shoulder is made up of three bones - the clavicle (collarbone), the scapula (shoulder blade), and the humerus (upper arm bone). These bones work together through four distinct joints, namely the glenohumeral, acromioclavicular, sternoclavicular, and the scapulothoracic joints.Ackland, D. C., Pak, P., Richardson, M., & Pandy, M. G. (2008). Moment arms of the muscles crossing the anatomical shoulder. Journal of Anatomy, 213(4), 383-390. Surrounding these bones and joints is a network of muscles, tendons, and ligaments. This includes the rotator cuff, which comprises four key muscles providing stability to the shoulder joint, and the deltoid muscle, which powers the lifting of the arm.Lewis, J. S. (2016). Rotator cuff tendinopathy: a model for the continuum of pathology and related management. British Journal of Sports Medicine, 50(19), 1187-1191. This complex structure enables your shoulder to perform a myriad of tasks every day. From reaching for a can on the top shelf, to throwing a ball, or even brushing your hair, few body parts offer such diversity of movement. However, this benefit comes at a cost. This inherent mobility of the shoulder makes it susceptible to a range of injuries and conditions. Overuse, trauma, or strain can cause a variety of shoulder conditions, including rotator cuff tears, impingement, and frozen shoulder. The intensive use of the shoulder in sports, especially those requiring repetitive overhead movements, further raises the risk of injuries.Yang, J. L., Chang, C. W., Chen, S. Y., Wang, S. F., & Lin, J. J. (2017). Mobilization techniques in subjects with frozen shoulder syndrome: randomized multiple-treatment trial. Physical Therapy, 97(10), 1003-1013. While our shoulder's dynamic capability is a boon for performing diverse movements, it also increases the risk of injury and pain. In the following sections, we will delve into how everyday habits, such as posture, can further affect your shoulder health. The Common Causes of Shoulder Pain Understanding the causes of shoulder pain isn't always straightforward. While injuries and conditions related to the shoulder anatomy we've discussed are prevalent, there are other potential causes to consider. Age-related wear and tear is a common cause. With time, the cartilage in our shoulders naturally deteriorates, leading to conditions like osteoarthritis. A research article in the American Journal of Sports Medicine confirms that age-related changes can predispose individuals to a host of shoulder disorders, including rotator cuff tears and glenohumeral osteoarthritis.Minagawa, H., Yamamoto, N., Abe, H., Fukuda, M., Seki, N., Kikuchi,

Haruki Murakami has often been accused of being a feckless, merely popular writer, but in The Existentialist Vision of Haruki Murakami (Cambria Press, 2022) Michael Ackland demonstrates that this is not the case, arguing that Murakami has not only assimilated the existentialist heritage but innovatively changed and revitalized it, thereby placing exciting personal possibilities within the reach of his worldwide readership. Ackland's study begins by tracing the troubled introduction of such alien conceptions as individualism, democracy and citizens' rights, and self-interested autonomy into Japan. It argues that Haruki Murakami was seminally exposed to these ideas, and to their modern reconfiguration in French existentialism, during the student protests of the late 1960s, and that the dissent and radicalism of this period has been rechanneled into his fiction. The first two chapters introduce readers to this formative period and to major, recurring concerns in Murakami's fiction. Then modern existentialism itself is discussed in terms of its philosophical roots in the writings of Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus, and of its fictional dramatization in the works of such authors as Fyodor Dostoevsky and Franz Kafka, and finally as it was received in Japan. Usually foreign conceptions undergo considerable recasting in Japan to heighten their relevance and innovative potential. This, too, is a hallmark of Murakami's adaptations, and part of his virulent critique of Japanese socialization and conformity, which is traced initially in such important short fiction as “The Elephant Vanishes” and “Sleep.” The bulk of this monograph focuses on the place of existentialism in Murakami's major novels. It argues that much-maligned “Murakami man” actually represents a carefully calculated case of failed or partial socialization, which leaves him ripe for unconventional personal developments, and eventually to become an exemplary existentialist figure. In Japan, according to Murakami, the individual typically becomes a regimented, exhaustively worked foot-soldier of contemporary capitalism, or archetypal salaryman, with the potential for terrible excesses underscored by telling allusions to war atrocities and the holocaust. Or the individual can become a free-thinking agent and vibrant alternative to the Japanese consensual norm. Independent decision-making and action are all important, for as Sartre famously stated, “human freedom precedes essence.” In other words, we make ourselves—how this is possible is explored in three chapters, which examine in succession Murakami's vision of childhood and formative years, his use of the supernatural and metaphor to disrupt social norms and to radically expand the challenges confronting individuals, and his evolving conception of what constitutes meaningful, accessible existentialist action. Jingyi Li is a PhD Candidate in Japanese History at the University of Arizona. She researches about early modern Japan, literati, and commercial publishing. Learn more about your ad choices. When done well, OOH smashes it. Local brands have been lagging, but the smart ones are learning from the likes of Nike, driving a “creative revolution” in digital out of home, reckons Neil Ackland, oOh!media's Chief Content, Marketing and Creative Officer. While tech like QR codes, 3D animation, location data and anamorphic screens can drive huge results, “There's a difference between what is available that creatives can use and then what's actually coming through the pipeline,” he says. Jetstar ran a QR code-based campaign in Melbourne and reached 6 million people with press coverage. Nike and Twitter are trying innovating creative – then sharing the campaigns on social to drive more engagement. Ackland says oOh! has launched a creative department, Poly, to reverse the lag. “We have to show brands through action how to deliver great out of home creative,” he says. Our guest for this episode is Robert Ackland, a professor from the School of Sociology at the Australian National University in Canberra. Rob studies networks on the Web, and he established the Virtual Observatory for the Study of Online Networks -- VOSON for short -- to provide tools for research on this topic. During this episode, Rob talks about his early work with hyperlinks, as well as how he evolved his research and VOSON tools as the web entered the social media era. He explains how he got involved in web science, as his background is mainly in economics, as well as what he's interested in now. And he talks about how we could use social bots as a positive force for political deliberation, even as so much of research on bots focuses on their negative effects. Callee Ackland discussed how her commitment to a zero-waste lifestyle developed into Bestowed Essentials and Hippie Haven. Interest in sustainable products came to Callee in 2016 after a purchase of hand-made soap. From then on, Callee stayed mindful of the ingredients and sources of the skincare she used in her daily life. She gave herself one year to develop her soap-making business full time, which is now Bestowed Essentials. A sustainable lifestyle was a standard to Callee who grew up in places that gave her a different relationship to sustainability than people growing up in other parts of the country. Once she watched Netflix’s A Plastic Ocean, her approach towards her business and life shifted. We briefly discussed why audiences should be aware of companies and sustainability, such as the marketing tactics trying to transfer responsibility away from larger brands. Consumers have power in how and where they consistently spend their money. Callee brought attention to the fact that everyone can participate in change. She reassured that everyone’s best effort can look different. If you decided to bring your own bags for groceries, and your neighbor switched to more sustainable brands, both impacts compound. Callee shared that “...every one of these different actions does add up.” Continuing on, Callee explained her observations on why recycling is part of the pollution problem, the purpose of mutual aid, and knowing how to make a change in your own community. South Dakota’s community is one of the main influences of Hippie Haven, a retail store & community space with seemingly endless opportunities for social impact. One of the opportunities is a donation drop-off for the indigenous-led organization Camp Mniluzahan. Callee shared insight around the organization’s efforts in the community being an example of mutual aid. Callee’s community connections are also the reason she went from selling her products in the back of her van to being stocked in 200 stores. Even more so, she reminisced on the lesson that entrepreneurs don’t need to do everything alone, and shouldn’t try to. She explained how the business eventually scaled enough to require a second level of management, and how she deals with managing people while being a visionary. During the pandemic, Callee’s ventures experienced disruption, but found ways to pull through. Callee shared what it’s like being the recipient of grants from Stacy's Rise Project and the Spanx by Sara Blakely Foundation. Besides assistance, Callee found discipline and adapting useful in her journey, and we both spoke on the grit that comes with a lack of resources. Hippie Haven is also the name of Callee’s podcast. A major part of the podcast is to speak about sustainability topics in plain English that is accessible for the general public. Soon the podcast grew into much more, but it’s all part of Callee’s approach to impact. She gave advice about her approach and shared she’ll be adding the nonprofit Zero Waste Business Alliance as part of her impact. If you would like to learn more, you can listen to the podcast, visit the store, browse the product line, or connect on Instagram, Facebook and youtube.

Callee recently joined the Young Democrats of South Dakota as Communications Director, the latest step in her long history of political activism and a new project underway -- the upcoming launch of the Zero Waste Business Alliance, a nonprofit professional networking organization of which she is President. When we aren't in a pandemic, Callee also travels the country in a self-converted campervan, hosting zero waste workshops & trash cleanups. With Callee we talked about her initial startup costs at the time when she was still shipping her goods from the back of her campervan, navigating change from being a solo-entrepreneur to leading her own company, what waste still exists behind the scenes of a zero-waste business, her tips on the eco-friendly swaps we all can make and much more! Follow Callee's journey on Instagram @hippie.ceo, check out Hippie Haven or Callee's global directory of online zero waste shops. About mutual aid concept that Callee mentioned: In mutual-aid systems, people work cooperatively to meet the needs of everyone in the community. It's different from charity, which features a one-way relationship between an organization and recipients, and often responds to the effects of inequality but not its causes. Mutual aid is an act of solidarity that builds sustained networks between neighbors.

D3: The Mighty Ducks – All Out of Quack Attack

Hops and Box Office Flops

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 14, 2020 67:00

D3: The Mighty Ducks is the culmination of the greatest youth sports trilogy in history. Now, I understand the competition for that title is thin, but for a group of plucky youngsters from Minnesota, the distinction is a high honor. Though it is the finale, and sort of a fitting end, D3 is also irrefutably the worst film of the series. It over exaggerates its own cannon—Charlie Conway (Joshua Jackson) was never really the official captain—is a step down in scale from its immediate predecessor, and boasts some of the worst sports scenes ever put to film. None of those are in any way a stretch, but I will only elaborate on the first. Conway—the lovable little scamp with the heart of gold—was an abysmal hockey player. You don't earn a nickname like "Spazway" if you're good. Sure, he scores the winning goal to defeat the dastardly Hawks in the district championship, but he also steps down from his role on the team in D2 to ensure a roster spot is available for Russ Tyler (Keenan Thompson) after Adam Banks returns from injury. Tyler's only notable skill is shooting the puck in a way that ignores the laws physics. So why does Conway give up his spot? Again, because he's sub-par. As a result, he does what many mediocre players do: He becomes a coaching assistant. Thus, anchoring the core emotional hook of D3 to Conway being stripped of his captaincy is beyond dumb and beneath the lofty standards established in this fictitious world of youth athletics. He never even had a "C" on his jersey until this film. There is contradictory evidence that I will in turn refute. Gordon Bombay (Emilio Estevez) opts for him to take that aforementioned penalty shot in the first film, but that means little. Bombay was just pushing the right buttons, instilling a boost of confidence in a player renowned for his penchant to choke. That's what great coaches do. And when Gunner Stahl refers to him as "Captain Duck" in the handshake line in D2, it's more a consequence of bad translation; and, needless to say, Gunner is hardly an authority on the hierarchy of the Ducks locker room. He can't even decide if he's a goalie or a right wing; or if he's an American or from Iceland. Perhaps the most damning evidence is that the captain, whether they offered or not, would never be a healthy scratch, nor would they quit the team because the coach was too strict and preached a commitment to defense. I mean, come on, he's essentially this franchise's Timmy Lupus (Bad News Bears). I digress. D3, for its many faults, is still a Mighty Ducks movie; that affiliation alone carries it past other dumb movies with kids who suck at stuff and then somehow win, defying all logic. It's also far more grounded than most of those other aforementioned silly movies with the underdog kids. And, in truth, D3 was a more believable follow up than D2. It is much more reasonable to accept they'd go one to become the JV team at a prestigious high school. A house team from suburban Minnesota would not be the go to squad to represent the US of A in the Junior Goodwill Games. Anyway, it was a flop. It grossed just $22.9 million. It didn't lose money because it was made on the cheap—see my comment about the actual hockey scenes—but it did gross far less than the previous two. Mighty Ducks took home $50.8 million, and D2 wasn't too far behind with $45.6. For all those who chose to sit this one out when it was released in 1996, you killed Hans (Joss Ackland). Murderers, the lot of you. Just kidding ... Ackland is alive and well, but he hates you as much as his character hated Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon 2. Now, sit back, enjoy a fine Molson, and sharpen those skates. The Top 100 Project branches off yet again as we bring you our debut episode of “Scoring At The Movies”. Ryan will sit down with good friend Chris Di Gregorio bi-weekly to jabber about movies of the sporting kind. We kick it off with the kids flick that spawned an NHL hockey team. And we’ve got questions. Is Hans actually Gordon’s “ghost dad”? What is Coach Reilly’s real job (and is it plastic surgery)? Did Gordon learn anything about integrity when he pulled his “redistricting” move to steal Adam Banks? Is Fulton on the juice? And what if Batman funded and coached the Ducks? Those queries and so many more will be answered in our chat about high-stakes peewee hockey.

How does gender influence the way we experience sexual pleasure? Equal Pleasure asks what more can we do to gain a greater understanding of how female pleasure operates. In this episode, Sex Education Australia's Jenny Ackland gives an overview of what young people are learning about sex and pleasure at school. She says some contemporary sex ed programs do address a broad range of topics, including gender issues, pornography, and pleasure, but that the programs are still not uniform or consistently applied in all schools. She says it's important for young girls in particular to feel comfortable experimenting with their bodies' potential for pleasure, and that kids need to be armed with a 'critical literacy' to decode the messages communicated through pornography.
