Neil Finn of Crowded House joined Billboard's Behind the Setlist podcast to chat about the band's upcoming album, Gravity Stairs, out May 31 through BMG, and the first single, "Oh Hi" (watch the amazing video at YouTube here). Neil shares some insights into the songwriting craft, the band's live performances and Crowded House's long history. Crowded House was formed in 1985 after the break-up of Neil's previous band Split Enz ("I Got You," "Message to My Girl"). The group's 1986 debut album was a huge success in the U.S., the group's native Australia and New Zealand and elsewhere. "Don't Dream It's Over" reached No. 2 on the Hot 100 singles chart in 1987, and "Something So Strong" reached No. 7 the same year. The band went on to continued success with the albums Temple of Low Men in 1988, Woodface in 1991 and Together Alone in 1993. After a pause, Crowded House returned with Time on Earth in 2007 and Intriguer in 2010. After yet another pause, they returned with Dreamers are Waiting in 2021.  Links Crowded House home page Crowded House tour dates Jay Gilbert @ Label Logic Glenn Peoples @ Billboard Learn more about your ad choices. Try playing a Crowded House record (any of them) then let Spotify play on…you will get just the best selection of really great songs. Go on, try it and you'll see for yourself. This discovery may well make drivetime radio programming a heck of a lot easier, or possibly redundant altogether. You may of course be a Crowded House fan and like, know this already. You may be a casual admirer, or even a sceptic. In which case, take the time to enjoy this shared revelation. But let me tell you that this is simple proof of Neil Finn's songwriting skills. Certainly it's more to do with that than mathematics.I'm saying this as a recently converted fan. One of the deep pleasures (and deep privilege) of doing this podcast is that I can discover what I've missed, correct my own perceptions of some artists, and get up to fan-speed. This band has made stone cold classic albums. Woodface, Together Alone, the debut album probably too. But each one of their seven studio L.Ps now including a brand new album Gravity Stairs offers a masterclass in high quality song and sound craft. Together Alone is a high point for sure but I particularly enjoyed the 2010 Intriguer album. Thing is, Crowded House records take time to love. They grow on you, something Neil Finn is well aware of:"In general our records that may have been regarded as classic, have taken their time. Every album has been a slow boiler, requiring a lot of belief in it". However, Gravity Stairs feels much more immediate than the band's more subtle 2021 release Dreamers Are Waiting. Crowded House have cracked the code to a healthy longevity. Classic songs, great stagecraft, a relaxed attitude to ‘success' and a continuous desire to create something new that's actually good. Whether the new songs last as long as the old doesn't matter too much when it's the same writer, the same band that has made its mark indelibly. One thing is for sure, those songs will probably outlive the algorithms.Support the showGet more related content at: https://www.songsommelier.com/

Tim Finn was born in  New Zealand.  In 1971 he completed a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Auckland. It is there that he met Mike Chunn, Robert Gillies, Philip Judd and Noel Crombie. Phil and Tim formed a band called Split Ends, which became Split Enz before they started to tour Australia. Finn recorded his first solo album, Escapade, in 1983. This album was very successful in Australia and New Zealand,  he then decided to leave Split Enz in 1984.   In early 1985, Tim moved to London.  He  wrote some music for movies, and acted in a few movies. His role in The Coca-Cola Kid was about five minutes long. He had a bigger role in the movie La Donna della Luna (The Moon Woman). In late 1989, he went to live in Melbourne. He recorded his third album, Tim Finn. In early 1990 he joined Crowded House, the group Neil had formed after Split Enz split up. The band recorded Woodface with him. He left Crowded House after the album. Because of their success, Tim Finn and Neil Finn were made OBE for services to New Zealand music in the 1993 Queen's Birthday Honours List. The album Finn was released in 1995. This was an album made by Neil and Tim as the Finn Brothers. Also in 1995, Finn worked with singers Andy White and Liam Ó Maonlaí. They formed the band ALT. They released the album Altitude, and more recently collaborated with Andy White to release New Single 'The Happiness Index'.

Crowded House seemingly came from nowhere in 1986 with the debut album. The hits "Don't Dream its Over" and "Something So Strong" were welcome respites from the hair-metal-and-faux-rap blur that dominated the airwaves that year. But the song crafting on that album begin more than a decade before when Neil Finn joined his older brother Tim's band, Split Enz, one of the most popular bands in Australia, New Zealand, and the UK. On this album, Woodface, the Finn brothers reunite with songs about infatuation, America, and motherhood. The harmonies are amazing and the songs seem at once effortless and carefully constructed. It is their finest album.

Crowded House's "Don't Dream It's Over" is one of the most memorable tunes of the '80s, and the band's Neil Finn explores that lasting legacy on the latest edition of The Story Behind the Song. Crowded House helped launch a new post-New Wave era in pop music in 1986, creating beautifully simple, earthy melodies driven by guitars rather than synths. Lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter Neil Finn founded the band after the demise of Split Enz (a Kiwi band out of New Zealand with several iconic songs of its own.) Finn's most iconic song is, without a doubt, “Don't Dream It's Over” – you know, the “Hey Now, Hey Now” song. It has transcended mere “classic” status over the years to become one of the most enduring music anthems of the past several decades, inspiring sing-alongs to this day. Neil wrote this song in less than 24 hours, something this podcast has revealed to be quite common for artists when creating their most lasting, signature songs. In this sixth episode of The Story Behind the Song, host Peter Csathy interviews Finn about “Don't Dream It's Over” and how it came to be. The two also discuss Neil's beautiful love song “Fall at Your Feet” from Crowded House's third album, Woodface. Through it all, Finn touches on his continuing “out of the box” musical journey, from Split Enz, to Crowded House, to solo artist, to Fleetwood Mac -- and what's next for it all. Listen to the new episode above, or check out the full video of the interview with Finn here.  Crowded House, Split Enz, Countdown, Gary Numan, Stranglers, The Clash, Duran Duran, Bowie, Ashes to Ashes, Ultravox, Roxy Music.  Welcome to "Mick and the Phatman Talking Music #10", coming to you live from Koletti's Corner Shop in Riverwood, in suburban South-East Sydney, Australia.   Mick's been watching a TV show called “Ashes to Ashes”, set in 1981, with a soundtrack from that era, with The Clash, Duran Duran, Bowie (title track), Ultravox, The Stranglers, late-period Roxy Music and Gary Numan.  The boys talk about how Gary Numan was an agoraphobic recluse who lived in a caravan in his parents' backyard and that “Cars” is not just a song, (“Here in my car / I feel safest of all / I can lock all my doors”), it's a lifestyle for him.  The Phatman's been listening to outtakes showing how The Velvet Underground's "Sunday Morning" might have sounded with different instruments - Glockenspiel,  Ukulele and Guitar   Feature topic: Crowded House  Crowded House arose from the ashes of Split Enz, a NZ band but Australian by adoption, where they were huge.   The Phatman saw "the Enz" at the Bondi Lifesaver (aka "the Wife-Swapper").  Split Enz appeared many times on "Countdown".  Mick recalls one time where the band were pretending to be school pupils, with Tim Finn as a very bizarre Headmaster!  After Split Enz, Neil Finn went to LA, where he put together a band he planned to call "The Mullanes".  However, Capitol, their US label, wanted a “better” name.  They were all living together in one house rehearsing, so, voila! “Crowded House”.  After a slow start, they became huge in America.  They were great TV - good looking guys, with no tattoos, long hair or drug convictions - who were pleasant, fun and funny, the same qualities that the Beatles brought over 30 years before.  Crowded House are commonly compared to The Beatles, for their types of song & approach to their audience (and the media).  Mick's encounters with Crowded House included a group trip to Bali, where someone had a cassette of “Don't dream it's Over” that got flogged for over 7 days .  On his first trip away with his girlfriend, now wife, they went to Coffs Harbour (east coast Australia).  With no music for the car, they went to a record shop & bought a cassette (!!?) of Woodface, which they played non-stop for 4 days. The boys saw Crowded House when they were one of the few bands ever to play the forecourt of the Sydney Opera House. Crowded House left a strong body of work. Their first album, Crowded House contained the perfect single, "Don't Dream It's Over".  The second album, Temple of Low Men, was a solid album from start to finish, with good pop songs and some really sensitive love songs (that's why women love it !).  Also nice drumming from Paul Hester! Woodface was full of lovely songs like "It's Only Natural", but it was brave of the band to include the song "Chocolate Cake", which lampooned the USA.  Americans are so thin skinned; they would have been horrified at how their little darlings had turned on them with lyrics like, "The excess of fat on your American bones / will cushion the impact as you sink like a stone”. New Zealander Neil Finn founded the indie rock band Crowded House with Austrailian drummer Paul Hester and Australian bassist Nick Seymour. For their third studio album Woodface, Neil's older brother and Split Enz alumnus Tim Finn would join the band. In fact, much of the material recorded for Woodface was originally intended for a Finn brothers album, and made it onto the this album after Capitol Records passed on many of the new songs that were originally intended for the album.Neil Finn has always been a strong singer-songwriter through many bands (including Crowded House), and is currently touring with Fleetwood Mac.Eric Von Haessler from WSB Radio and The Von Haessler Doctrine joins us again on What the Riff to cover this excellent and underrated album.Chocolate CakeThe opening track on the album was an album about the excesses of America and the West. “The excess of fat on your American bones will cushion the impact as you sink like a stone.” It's a bit of a novelty track with a “National Enquirer” feel. Its Only NaturalThis beautiful track reflects a long relationship. “It's only natural that I should want to be with you. It's only natural that you should feel the same way too.”Weather with YouThis track with an eastern-influenced sound and a vocal duet encourages the listener to not be affected by circumstances, but instead to “take the weather with you.”4 Seasons in One DayAnother “weather related title” brings the lyrics, “Even when you're feeling warm, the temperature can drop away like 4 seasons in one day.” There's a distinct Beatles inspiration from this track, and the lyrics are incredibly deep. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:“7 and 7 is - Love” (from the movie, “Point Break”)The movie Point Break was a surfing-themed film, and this track reflects that surfer image.STAFF PICKS:"Saving My Heart" by YesWe say, “All roads lead to Yes,” and it is true for Bruce's staff pick. This song is from the album “Union,” which combines the current Yes members with former Yes members John Anderson, Bill Bruford, Rick Wakeman, and Steve Howe.“Walking in Memphis” by Marc CohnBrian's staff pick takes us 10 feet off of Beale. The song is somewhat autobiographical, describing Marc Cohn's experience on a trip to Memphis, Tennessee; where he met Muriel in The Hollywood Cafe, and attended a service by the Reverend Al Green.“Too High” by The Mighty Lemon DropsWayne brings us a deep and psychedelic cut from the Manchester scene that would eventually become popular with The Stone Roses and Oasis. This is off their fourth studio album “Sound...Goodbye to Your Standards.”“More Than Words” by ExtremeRob finishes our staff picks with this acoustic ballad from Gary Cherone and Extreme. This is the third single from their album “Pornograffitti.” The band would eventually come to resent the popularity of the song.INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:“Kind of Bird” by The Allman Brothers BandAn instrumental jam with a Southern flair takes us out on this week's What the Riff.
