Higher Learning Reaction, Recap, Breakdown, Commentary, Analysis, & Spoiler Review! Greg Alba & Coy Jandreau take on Higher Learning, the 1995 drama directed by John Singleton (Boyz N the Hood, 2 Fast 2 Furious) that tackles themes of race, identity, privilege, and systemic injustice in the American college experience. The film follows three freshmen—Malik (Omar Epps), Kristen (Kristy Swanson), and Remy (Michael Rapaport)—as they navigate the pressures of higher education, racial tensions, and personal transformation at the fictional Columbus University. Some of the most intense and pivotal moments include Malik's struggle with his track scholarship and racial identity, Remy's descent into white supremacy under the influence of Cole Hauser's character, and the tragic climactic shooting scene that shakes the entire campus. Other powerful moments include Ice Cube's character Fudge dropping hard truths about systemic racism, Laurence Fishburne's powerful lectures as Professor Phipps, and the heartbreaking fates of several key characters that still resonate today. Omar Epps as Malik Williams (Love & Basketball, House), Kristy Swanson as Kristen Connor (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Phantom), Michael Rapaport as Remy (True Romance, Atypical), Ice Cube as Fudge (Friday, Barbershop), Jennifer Connelly as Taryn (A Beautiful Mind, Requiem for a Dream), Tyra Banks as Deja (Coyote Ugly, America's Next Top Model), Laurence Fishburne as Professor Phipps (The Matrix, John Wick 2), Cole Hauser as Scott Moss (Yellowstone, 2 Fast 2 Furious), Regina King as Monet (Watchmen, If Beale Street Could Talk), and Busta Rhymes as Dreads (Halloween: Resurrection, Shaft). If you're a fan of John Singleton's socially conscious films, be sure to check out Boyz N the Hood (1991), Poetic Justice (1993), Baby Boy (2001), and Four Brothers (2005). This year for Black History Month, Milwaukee Film tapped its new Black Lens programmer Ty Williams to curate selections that examine various aspects of the Black experience. We didn't just want to share his picks (although we do that below), so we invited Williams to join this episode of Cinebuds to take us deeper into this month's programming. As is usually the case when we talk with creatively minded folks, the thought process Williams went through when coming up with his list is as interesting as the list itself. You'll hear about his background, which includes graduating from the film department at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee; how he balances between choosing films he loves and one the public will enjoy; and the personal favorites that didn't make the final cut but are well worth your time.Check out the full lineup of Milwaukee Film's Black History Month programming below (including ones that have already screened in case you want to track them down yourself) and grab tickets on the Milwaukee Film website.Feb. 2 — DrylongsoFeb. 7 — Do the Right ThingFeb. 14 — ObsessedFeb. 15 — Who Killed Captain Alex?Feb. 16 — NationtimeFeb. 19 — Boyz N the HoodFeb. 22 — Get OutFeb. 23 — Malcolm XFeb. 28 — Glory

From Boyz N the Hood in 1991 until now, Morris Chestnut has seen much of Hollywood. "I've been through pretty much everything in the industry." Now he's starring in and executive producing CBS's new drama Watson (January 26). It "was a no-brainer" for Chestnut when he was approached to play Dr. John Watson. "It's just a blessing and an honor to have that opportunity." Based within the mythology of Sherlock Holmes, Watson picks up a year after Holmes' death. "The character's dealing with the loss of his best friend." This depth is something that Chestnut feels he's most qualified to portray now. "Fifteen years ago, I don't know if I'd be able to do the role the way I'm able to do it now." But one thing Chestnut is most grateful for is the relationship he's built with fans from films like Boyz N the Hood and The Best Man. "If I were to say, right now today, let's get a project together where people are going to be talking about it 30 years from now, everybody wants that. But it doesn't happen that often. And I've been blessed enough to be involved in two of them."See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

"Everything is in a cycle, and the cycle is dictated by the audience's needs and wants, the studio's needs and wants in terms of the financial bottom line, right? Those two very evolving organisms are always trying to sync into the right gear. So, I don't worry anymore because it always comes back around. You're in this long enough, you just go, all right, this is a cycle, it'll come back around."  Stephanie Allain Stephanie Allain of Homegrown Pictures, is a prolific film and television producer dedicated to creating content by and about women and people of color with authentic stories, depictions, and representation. She began her career in the mid-80s as a reader at the elite talent agency, CAA, a job that required reading scripts and books submitted to the agency and providing coverage of the material, often the first barrier for further consideration and development.  In her next position at Columbia Pictures, as one of only two African-American readers,  a young USC student found his way to her under the guise of interest in a job. Ep 388 | Should Baltimore Dump Lamar Jackson? | Brandon Miller & Alabama's ‘Boyz n the Burbs'

Fearless with Jason Whitlock

Is it time for Lamar Jackson to fly the coop in Baltimore? Contract negotiations with the former NFL MVP and the Ravens have reached a stalemate. Jackson is looking for the "Deshaun Watson treatment" for his next contract, and it doesn't appear that Baltimore is willing to put him in the same tax bracket. Jason believes that the team has mentally moved on from the QB, and Lamar has another problem. What NFL team is going to trade for a run-first quarterback who wants the most guaranteed money in NFL history? Jason and “Fearless” soldier Steve Kim debate about Lamar's fate, Eric Bieniemy's press conference, and Aaron Rodgers' next home. Plus, Jason delivers a fire-starter that draws a parallel between the saga of Alabama basketball star Brandon Miller, culture, and "Boyz n the Hood." “Brandon Miller is a great kid from a great family. He's trapped in the destructive culture we created and continue to tolerate. We've been watching grown men fold, bow, and submit to this toxic culture for the last decade.” "Fearless" contributors Shemeka Michelle, Delano Squires, and Royce White share their thoughts on the culture that may have pressured Miller into making a bad decision for the sake of defending his “blackness.” We want to hear from the Fearless Army!! During the time where groups like NWA, and films like Colors and Boyz N the Hood were the soundtracks to some of the most violent days in Southern California. How did those streets shape and mold the man we know today. We follow his journey from SoCal to Oregon, and eventually to the penitentiary where every day is a life or death struggle to survive.  From being incarcerated to becoming a successful coach and mentor to many young coaches, this is just a glimpse of a story that needs to be heard.  We don't have any advertisements save for promoting our own products and services and those of our guests. This episode originally aired on January 20, 2022, a few days before the tragic death of Regina’s son, Ian Alexander, Jr. Out of respect for Regina, Ian Sr. and their family, we stopped featuring and unpublished the episode upon learning the news. This is the re-release of the episode. With a desire to create art and be involved with stories that speak to her, the talented Regina King has a career spanning decades, both in front of and, more recently, behind the camera. Having earned 109 nominations, 59 wins and counting, including an Oscar, a Golden Globe and 4 Emmy Awards, Regina is in demand and making history. In 2019, Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world. Regina has had many memorable feature film roles such as Cuba Gooding Jr.’s wife ‘Marci’ in the blockbuster film Jerry Maguire, as well as How Stella Got Her Groove Back with Angela Bassett, the hit action thriller Enemy of the State opposite Will Smith, and Boyz N the Hood written and directed by the late John Singleton. For Regina's performance in Barry Jenkins' screenplay adaptation of James Baldwin's If Beale Street Could Talk, she won an Oscar and Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor. She also had an Emmy Award-winning role in the HBO series, Watchmen. Regina's current project is portraying Shirley Chisholm, the first African American woman elected to Congress (1968) in the feature Shirley. Over the past few years, Regina has stepped behind the camera directing episodes of critically acclaimed television series such as NBC’s award-winning THIS IS US, ABC’s Scandal, and HBO's Insecure among others. With her directorial feature film debut, One Night in Miami, based on the screenplay from Kemp Powers, Regina made history being the first black female director to debut a film at the 77th Annual Venice International Film Festival. Join Regina and host, Brad Johnson, as they discuss her approach to work and the connection the audience feels with the realness she brings to her characters, the recent transition to directing, and her new role as Shirley Chisholm. Regina walks us through her experience directing One Night in Miami from first reading the script to connecting with the families of the four icons in the film. With less than 40 hours to prepare, we learn the story behind her giving the opening monologue for the 2021 Academy Awards show against the backdrop of the previous year.
