In the constantly evolving world of law enforcement, connecting police officers with the latest research is crucial for effective, evidence-based decision-making. Yet, traditional academic publications are often inaccessible, both in cost and in technical language. Applied Police Briefings (APB) steps in to bridge this gap, providing law enforcement with free, practical and concise summaries of cutting-edge research. By transforming academic findings into easily digestible briefs, APB empowers officers and departments to stay informed and apply data-driven strategies in their everyday duties. In this episode of the Policing Matters podcast, host Jim Dudley speaks with APB founders Craig Bennell and Kirk Luther about their mission to make police-relevant research accessible and impactful. Both established academics and passionate advocates for evidence-based policing, Bennell and Luther saw firsthand how critical findings were failing to reach those in the field. Through APB, they're addressing this need by curating essential studies, stripping away complex jargon, and presenting them in a format that is meaningful and useful for officers and police leaders alike. The use of the vascular neck restraint by law enforcement officers has been the topic of recent, intense, debate. Special interest groups have equated the use of the vascular neck restraint with ‘near-death' experiences and have called for outright bans. Policy makers have been very critical of agencies that train and permit the use of the VNR, and some agencies have been influenced by heavy political pressure to discontinue its use. All of this debate has taken place in the absence or ignorance of what the research actually says about the safety of the VNR when applied by officers in the operational setting. In this interview, Dr. Craig Bennell, professor of Psychology at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario, where he also serves as Director of Carleton's Police Research Laboratory, talks about the important findings from research conducted by an incredibly talented cast of international researchers. The paper is titled ‘Safety of Vascular Neck Restraint Applied by Law Enforcement Officers' and was published in the Journal of Forensic and Legal Medicine. Topics covered in this interview regarding the VNR research findings include, the significance and frequency of use of force, the application and consequences of the Vascular Neck Restraint, how many agencies teach the proper use of it, the methodology of the VNR, the effectiveness of its technique, and, of course, the actual empirical safety of the technique. This interview contains practical insights on how agency administrators and trainers should consider the technical, training and political implications of the VNR method and its impact on police training and policy. In addition, in this interview, Dr Bennell strongly exhorts police leaders to use an evidence-based approach to critical decisions that broadly impact officer and public safety. A copy of the paper can be accessed and downloaded at www.trainersbullpen.com

THANKS TO ANDREW FOR MAKING THE INTRO SONG. (soundcloud.com / andoryukesuta)@andoryukesuta Invasion of the Body Snatchers 1978 The first remake of the paranoid infiltration classic moves the setting for the invasion from a small town to the city of San Francisco and starts as Matthew Bennell notices that several of his friends are complaining that their close relatives are in some way different. When questioned later they themselves seem changed as they deny everything or make lame excuses. As the invaders increase in number they become more open and Bennell, who has by now witnessed an attempted "replacement" realises that he and his friends must escape or suffer the same fate. But who can he trust to help him and who has already been snatched? A race of gelatinous creatures abandons their dying planet and travels to Earth, where they take the form of small pods with pink flowers. Elizabeth Driscoll, a laboratory scientist at the San Francisco Health Department, brings one of the flowers to her home. She awakens the next morning to discover her boyfriend, Geoffrey Howell, acting cold and distant and dropping nondescript debris in one of many garbage trucks that will become ubiquitous later on. Driscoll's colleague, Matthew Bennell, advises her to visit psychiatrist David Kibner, who is giving a presentation of his new book. As Elizabeth and Matthew drive to the bookstore, a hysterical civilian warns them of danger before being pursued by a mob, killed in a hit and run and surrounded by emotionless onlookers. At the presentation, Kibner skillfully sows doubt in Elizabeth and another woman about their shared misgivings concerning their respective partners. Meanwhile, Jack Bellicec, an aspiring writer and friend of Matthew, calls Matthew to investigate when a deformed body resembling Jack is found in his wife Nancy's mud parlor. Matthew goes to Elizabeth to warn her, but discovers a semi-formed duplicate of her. Matthew rescues Elizabeth and alerts the police, but the duplicates of Jack and Elizabeth disappear before their arrival. Elizabeth deduces that the flowers are involved and examines it at the health department, failing to find records of it, while Matthew unsuccessfully attempts to alert several government agencies. Several acquaintances are revealed to have been facsimiled, and Matthew and his friends nearly incur the same fate in their sleep that night. Matthew calls the police, but realizes that the department has been duplicated. Matthew destroys his own clone with a hoe before escaping with the others. The "Pod People" – extraterrestrials emerging from later-stage pods and taking the forms and memories of sleeping humans as the originals crumble to ashes – set off in pursuit of Matthew's group. The duplicates emit a shrill scream when they discover a human being among them. Jack and Nancy create a distraction and Matthew and Elizabeth escape back into the city, barely avoiding a taxi driver's trap once he identifies them as human. Matthew recognizes and unsuccesfully tries to wake Harry, a homeless busker lying asleep with his dog next to a mature pod. Matthew and Elizabeth take refuge in the health department, where they take a large dose of speed to remain awake. They are ambushed by the duplicates of Jack and Kibner and injected with sedatives while the latter expounds a rationalization of the alien strategy to replace terrestrial life. The previous dose of speed enables Matthew to escape with Elizabeth after killing Jack's double and locking Kibner's in a refrigerated room.

In this podcast Alan and Dani discuss two prominent stories in the media: Prince Andrew and his case; and the failed case brought by some of Barry Bennell's victims against Manchester City Football Club. Prince Andrew failed to have the case brought against him by Virginia Giuffre dismissed on the basis that she was precluded from suing him having entered an agreement with Epstein. The judge dismissed that argument. Alan and Dani discuss the latest developments and the possible paths the case may travel down. Alan and Dani also discuss the Manchester City judgment and the fact that the judge accepted the victims' accounts of sexual abuse but had left it too late to sue, and in any event the club would not be liable for Bennell' crimes. It was accepted that Bennell had sexually abused the victims, but that the club was not liable. The judge was not prepared to allow the case to proceed out-of-time not so much because of the time gap, but because of the effect of the delay on the evidence. The Limitation Act 1981 allows a claim to procced outside the 3 year time limit for bringing a claim if basically in a case such as this it is fair to do so. In Alan' experience a judge will not agree if key witnesses are dead or potentially important evidence is missing. Both Alan and Dani discuss how the case may have a silver lining for CSA survivors as regards bringing clams against those responsible for abusers. Finally they were asked by a listener to discuss the access to medical records in claims for compensation.

Gary Cliffe is one of the 800 survivors of child sexual abuse at the hands of former football coach and paedophilic serial offender Barry Bennell. Bennell terrorised children in the late 80s and 90s, while working with the children coming through the youth academies of Manchester City, Crewe Alexandra and later, Stoke City. Despite suspicions and complaints made about Bennell, he was allowed to continue in his depravity, staying at the homes of the children's families. I met both Steve and Gary a few years ago over on Twitter and have been so touched by their courage in breaking their silence to help others come forward too. This episode is very close to my heart as I really believe that if they hadn't heard Andy Woodward speaking out on the Victoria Derbyshire show, then they may not have found their voice It confirms how powerful it is to hear someone sharing their story and the courage it can give to others to find their own voice to share their story too Steve Walters is an ex professional footballer – Crewe Alexandra, director of Offside Trust, football survivor, business owner and family man . Gary Cliffe was a youth Footballer for Manchester City and survivor of Barry Bennell. in 2018, along with 12 other survivors, Bennell was found guilty of numerous counts of serious sexual abuse of children. Gary helped to secure 8 counts of serious abuse convictions against Bennell. He is currently a senior ambassador to the Offside Trust, Advisor to the FA survivor and safeguarding group. He has been Detective Constable and has twenty years' service with Staffordshire Police and his current role in Child Protection and Exploitation Team. Some key points from this episode:· How when they both look back, they realised how groomed they were· How that over time they have learned to live with what happened to them· How speaking out has unburdened them both· How they both understand now that the guilt and shame is not theirs to carry· How they are grateful to others for speaking out· How they started The Offside Trust to support other survivors and raise awareness· How they recognised they couldn't deal with the impact of the abuse by themselves"The hurt is not ours to carry" - Gary Cliffe"Turn a massive negative into a huge positive" - Steve Walters * * * *"Unbroken: Healing Through Storytelling" features individuals who have all triumphed after adversity and have not just bounced back in life, but forward and are now making a difference for others.Hosted by Madeleine Black, the show will share stories of all the amazing people Madeleine has met on her own journey as an author/speaker and these stories will heal, motivate, inspire and bring hope when they share their wisdom and knowledge with her.She really believes in the power that comes when we share our stories, that in fact we are not story tellers but story healers. It seeks to use offenders' decision-making on where and when they choose to offend to either catch them in the act, prioritise suspects based on where they live or hang out or to seek further intelligence and evidence on the suspect. GP is able to infer an offender's familiarity with the area where the crime occurred, why they were there by analysing the locations and timings of offences. It has been found that criminals do not tend to travel far from their base to commit their offences (Bennell, C., & Canter, D. V. (2002). Linking commercial burglaries by modus operandi: Tests using regression and ROC analysis. Science & Justice, 42, 153–164); (Goodwill, A. M., & Alison, L. J. (2006). The development of a filter model for prioritising suspects in burglary offences. Psychology, Crime & Law, 12, 395–416) unless their particular target is not available in their vicinity. The utility of GP really came to the fore in the context of serious serial crimes, when psychologist David Canter assisted police in identifying the so-called ‘Railway Rapists' who had devolved into murderers in the 1980s (Canter, D. Story: Dr. Bennell ist Inspektor der Gesundheitsbehörde in San Francisco.

Following former football coach Barry Bennell’s sentencing of 31 years for 50 counts of child sexual abuse, we speak to one of his victims Steve Walters who along with other survivors, have set up a support network, The Offside Trust to combat child abuse in sport and support the healing journey of survivors. In a moving and raw interview, Steve explains what it was like coming face to face with the man who ruined his childhood and how he now aims to rebuild his life. Fans in Australia have had their first taste of a bite-sized version of one of the country’s most popular sports. AFLX is a new, turbo-charged version of Australian Rules Football which organisers hope will be popular with international audiences. It is the latest sport to attempt bringing in new fans to a shorter form of a traditional game. We find out what the response has been like. Vince Smith was a successful jockey winning over 250 races but she is now openly living as a woman after spending more than half a century hiding her feelings from friends, family and those in the horse-racing industry. She is currently in talks to become the first ever jockey to race as both a man and woman, and telling her story to help others considering a gender change. June Kang used to tell her son, Andy, bedtime stories about the Korean War and how it not only divided a nation, it divided families. Her dad — his grandfather — fought in the war. So watching North and South Korea march as a single team into the Opening Ceremony of the Winter Olympics carried enormous emotional weight. Andy was born in Korea but made his debut as an Australian Olympian in a sport Korea dominate - short-track speed skating. We speak to Andy about his experience in PyeonChang. Canada captain Caroline Ouellette faced her US counterpart Julie Chu on many occasions in the most heated rivalry in Ice Hockey. Chu was the first Asian-American woman to play for the US team - Ouellette led Team Canada to gold at the 2014 Winter Games but who would have predicted what would happen next. Clearly, they were more than just rivals and the couple have had their first baby – we speak to Caroline about how they met and was it love at first ice? Dr. Matthew Stanbrook, deputy editor for CMAJ, interviews Maria Bennell, epidemiologist in Evaluative Clinical Sciences at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto. Mrs. Bennell and colleagues have published a study involving more than 39 000 patients receiving angiography in 18 cardiac centres between 2008 and 2011. They found that there is a twofold variation in the ratio of revascularization to medical therapy for the initial treatment of stable ischemic heart disease across hospitals in Ontario and that two-thirds of this variation was explained by patient characteristics. Nonetheless, the variation was associated with potentially important differences in clinical outcomes, say the authors.
