In our recent podcast, we had an in-depth conversation with Ray from DC Rainmaker. Ray shared the journey of launching the most well-known blog and Youtube channel and his views on the wearable market. As he began using various wearable devices, his experience with an old Polar watch led him to the more recognizable Garmin Forerunner 305. This progression from user to reviewer was natural, and he detailed his first steps into blogging with a review of Garmin in 2007.Ray also offered a candid look at the competitive landscape of wearables. He spoke about ambitious but short-lived brands and why they struggled against the likes of Garmin. Much of this was attributed to the steep challenges new brands face when trying to innovate and meet the benchmark set by established brands. Our discussion also ventured into the software realm. Ray pointed out that while Garmin's hardware is impeccable, its software has historically lagged. He attributes this in part to Garmin's hiring practices and their decision related to acquiring and integrating MotionBased, which inadvertently gave Strava an edge in the platform world. The Blog, The Youtube channel, Ray's Twitter, --TERRA, More Podcasts,Twitter,LinkedIn

After years of rumor and speculation, Apple finally took the wraps off its virtual reality headset this week. The Apple Vision Pro made its debut at the company's big developer conference in Cupertino, California. The new headset lets the viewer enjoy a fully immersive experience, or dial in a little bit of their visual surroundings to mix the real world and virtual elements together. It's an impressive feat of engineering. When it goes on sale next year for $3,500, Apple hopes it will serve as its next big platform for app developers—and the usefulness of the apps that wind up on the Vision Pro are what its success or failure really hinges on. Our own Lauren Goode got to try the headset, and she tells us all about it. We also welcome WIRED product writer and reviewer Brenda Stolyar onto the show to go over all of the other updates Apple announced at its Worldwide Developers Conference, including new Macs, and new software features coming to iPhones, Macs, Apple Watches, and iPads. Show Notes: Read Lauren's hands-on (face-on?) report of the Apple Vision Pro. Read Brenda's roundup of the new features coming to macOS. Boone Ashworth asks if people really want to wear VR headsets. We also have a roundup of all the big WWDC announcements. Khari Johnson looks at why Apple didn't talk about GenAI this week, even though it's currently the hottest discussion topic in Silicon Valley. Recommendations: Brenda recommends watching all of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on Amazon Prime Video. Lauren recommends the outdoor consumer tech website, DC Rainmaker. What's New in the 303: My New Old Bike, Do You Really Need a New Bike? And there it was, my old Madone happily sitting on on my Saris smart trainer just begging for attention. I thought, “why not fix this one up, take the wheels off my never ridden triathlon bike and use that?” (My original Ultregra wheels needed replacing). I knew it needed some love, some parts and a few tweaks, so I wondered if my top notch, service course bike mechanic friend Andy could fix it up. I told him just use the minimum parts and get it rideable for my 285 mile trip and then I would still consider a new road bike. Now I won't for a long time hopefully thanks to him. He wanted no part of “sort of fixing it up.” He is a perfectionist and insisted we do it right; take everything off the frame, repack and replace bearings, all new drive train, shifters, cranks, cables, etc etc… He scrounged for good used parts, even parts off a bike a friend gave him to use “for a good home” after she was hit by a motorist and needed a new bike. I felt like the kids in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang watching their dad dismantle part of the house to bring back the old race car saved from the scrap heap. Andy would call or text almost daily with some tantalizing update or request approval to spend just a little more for this or that. My Madone was pretty special to me as it replaced another Madone broken when a driver hit me riding down Lookout. Luckily my body prevailed much better than my bike. Fast forward 40,000 miles and the need to replace the wheels and a tiny crack in the frame expertly fixed by Broken Carbon in Boulder when I decided I couldn't pass up the opportunity to buy a discounted R5. Hindsight 20/20, still not a bad decision, but this one was better. Trek seems to be in love with the combination of letters that name their road bikes; Madone, Domane and Emonda. So I will affectionately rename my Madone to “Nomad”e with an E. Like a nomad, my bike is on the move again. Andy put two pages of parts, materials and tremendous time to get it rolling again. But it rides so well! Andy is my friend and wanted to help, but he also believes in repurposing and sustainability and put a lot of love into this project. With the insurance money I could've easily bought a very nice new road bike, but why? Sure the new 12 speed Dura-Ace is nice. I guess disc brakes are good, although I'm not a 100% on them, but I did toy with the idea of one bike and two sets of wheels; road and gravel. But the heart of the bike, the frame, hasn't really changed much in the last decade—at least in process. I picked up my bike two days before I left and because of snow I couldn't test it. I packed it and off I went. Simply put. It was serendipitous. To feel the love of biking again on a trusted and reliable bike with so many conquered mountains and stories lived; to be on it once again thanks to a friend next to the ocean on my way to Key West on a new adventure with new friends felt amazingly sublime. The moment I hit the road keeping up with Dave and Deiter, pushing kind of hard to meet the others, I felt so good about this decision. Like, so proud to have kept this bike alive. And if felt better than ever. Tight, responsive, comfortable and the Zipp wheels with the bearings completely re-lubricated rolled so nice. It literally felt like a brand new bike and at a fraction of the cost. Now there is a new bike out there for someone else and I made less impact on the environment. In light of feeling bike burnout last fall with not such great health over the winter, I have never felt so grateful to be on a bike. As I stared in the calming surf washing ashore, the sound of the water retreating across the sand back to the ocean reminded me of the whirring of the wheels on smooth Florida pavement in the heart of the Everglades. Rich - I think we need a Part 3 - "When there's nothing to salvage and you decide to go new!". Here's the process I'm going through and the bike that Andy is building for me. $5K budget Riding style is 99.99% road and climbing Priorities high quality frame, bottom bracket, drive train, fast wheels and disc brakes. Di2, carbon wheels and carbon bars would be great, but assumed out of my budget. To make sure were looking at the right frames we did a measurement at his house. Height, arm span, inseam, shoulder width, etc. Got to hold the wheels manufacturing bottom bracket and get a feel for the bar width. Frame - Argon 18 Gallium Bottom Bracket - Wheels Manufacturing Groupo - Shimano Ultegra Brakes - disk Bars - FSA Alloy Wheels - Ksyrium SL Disc Shout out to last week's guests Dina Griffin (nutrition mechanic) and Bob Seebohar (enrg performance) and their expertise on my ongoing pursuit of trying to figure out endurance nutrition. Used the PH sodium test system which uses medical grade equipment They used electrodes to stimulate sweating on my forearm then applied a disc with a vacuum tube that inducted the sweat That sweat was then injected into the machine that spit out my sodium concentration per liter 594mg of sodium per litre of sweat. A low salt sweater. Now I have a crucial part of the equation for understanding my approximate net sodium and fluid losses. I've always struggled with my nutrition and hydration in long course races. After years of trying to figure out a formula that works for me. A couple of years ago I thought I finally figured it out, having one of the best 70.3 races ever. Last year at Boulder 70.3 I found myself struggling to gulp down my sports drink on the bike and felt like I was behind on my hydration. By mile 7 on the run, I was starting to feel nauseous and only found relief in slowing down. With a little more than a mile to go I found myself with dry heaves and fellow athletes offering everything from well wishes to Rolaids (thanks, Guy Sigley). I felt trashed at the finish line with continuing bouts of dry heaves. That was how I ended my last long course race. In five weeks I'll be on the start line of IRONMAN 70.3 Galveston. I want this race to go perfectly and avoid the hydration mistakes of the past. I also decided to write this article because I don't want anyone else to have races like that. We all train too hard and sacrifice too much to have race day go sideways. Committed to getting my hydration right at Galveston 70.3, I have been regularly testing my sweat rate in my cycling and running workouts. At 34-38oz (33oz = 1 liter). per hour - more on that later. I also wanted to make sure I knew how much sodium I lose per liter of sweat. Wanting to don't want to find myself My training has been consistent and even my long rides and runs feel great Fast forward this coming April will be my next race at that distance. Upcoming Guests 3/10: TO and Rinny about the Couples Championship 3/25: A'nna Sewall of Athlete Blood Test and Jordan Jones of Powder7 Closing: Thanks again for listening in this week. For decades now running's cousin sport, cycling has understood the power of... power is the ultimate objective metric in a lot of areas of our lives including - endurance sports training and racing. How does power in running work? I mean we have heart rate, pace and the very accurate Rate of perceived exertion (RPE)... but how can you use running power to train and race smarter? Find out the question to that answer and more in this episode.Note - if you aren't into metrics, physics and data then this might not be for you and feel free to go to another episode. If you are into this stuff, then please keep listening on and share this with other run nerds! 1. Begrüßung wie geht es uns? --- 2. Wahoo Rival WTF??? --- 6. Schutzblechmontage: was bisher geschah Immerhin bisher verletzungsfrei... dafür ausreichend Schaden am Material. Möchte jemand sich an der Gabel versuchen? Bitte melde Dich... As the world waits - and much of Europe closes its doors - Simon, Shane and Nathan try to be upbeat in trying times and consider the Two Big Hits in Zwift right now. Pace Partners, or pacer bots, are a big success with Zwifters and senior games guy Wes Salmon, from HQ, talks to Simon about scope for development and some ideas being tossed around to make Coco, Dan and their pals even more bestie friends for Zwifters. The podcasters chuck in a few of their thoughts. Ray Maker, or DC Rainmaker, is one of the most respected voices in sports tech and Simon pulls out two big talking points around indoor cycling from Ray’s annual keynote address to the industry. The Zwftcasters have their say too. And whilst the success of the WTRL racing series may have been predictable, it’s made it no less overwhelming for the organisers. Simon talks to part of the leadership team, Martin Carew, about the headaches as well as the benefits of the TTT event that’s taking Zwift racing by storm. There’s just time for a bit of Zwift-related banter and as ever, the Zwiftcasters take up the challenge. We hope you enjoy listening!
Welcome to Gear Talk with Annie and Brooke from Swimrun Labs.On this episode, we answer a question that we got from several of our listeners: what GPS Wearable should I get for swimrun? We discuss everything that should be considered in choosing a GPS watch and share our personal favorites. But first…Gear Updates/First ImpressionsAnnie ordered the Aquasphere Classic Pullbuoy that was mentioned on the Budget Swimrun Kit episode for $6 and free shipping. Unfortunately, it wasn’t as giant as advertised. It’s the size of a regular swim pull buoy. That being said, for $6 you can buy two of them and glue them together.Ark Sports KORPBrooke has continued to have water infiltration issues with her Ark Sports KORP wetsuit. She contacted Ark and they mentioned that she should have sized down…but didn’t offer to replace it for the right size since she had already used it in open water. While the KORP might run big, Chris mentioned that his VIGG suit might run small. So make sure that you are super confident about your size.Ark Sports Keel+ Swimrun Pull Bouy Finally, Chris and Chipper have started testing with Ark Sports Keel+ Pull Buoy (this item is sold out online). Chipper did a “scientific” test of 100 yard swims with nothing, a regular pool pull buoy, a Keel, and the Keel+. The Keel+ was definitely the fastest. Chipper also used the Keel+ in a swimrun practice and was a lot faster in a full kit. Chris did a longer non-scientific test of 500s with paddles alternating between the Keel and the Keel+ and his gut told him that the Keel+ was faster. It took some getting used to swimming with the Keel+ given the size and extra buoyancy in a pool without a full kit on. We’ll have a full review on the Keel+ in a future show. In the meantime, you can listen to our complete review of the Keel Pull Buoy on Gear Talk.GPS Wearables for SwimrunBefore getting into the details about the best GPS wearables and watches for Swimrun, we wanted to make some global statements about GPS watches. First, having a GPS watch is not a necessity to participate in Swimrun or have fun out there so don’t let the lack of a GPS watch stop you from training and signing up for a race. Second, there are a lot of considerations about the technical features of the different watches. There is a better source for that type of analysis: DC Rainmaker is the gold standard for super in-depth reviews about specific watches. Finally, while most GPS watches have some form of heart rate monitoring and use different methods, either with a chest strap or wrist-based optical readers. Chest strap is the most accurate so if you’re looking for something for heart rate training and optical tracking is more for folks that aren’t totally devoted to zone training. Annie had some more thoughts on the matter that you can read below:Optical HR sensor accuracy can vary from individual to individual. Aspects such as skin color, hair density, and position can impact accuracy. The band should be snug. It doesn’t need to leave marks, but you shouldn’t be able to slide a finger under the band (at least during workouts). Chest strap will always be more accurate than optical. If you do a lot of steady state training, using a wrist based HRM is generally pretty reliable because there’s not much HR variation it needs to pick up. Still can be 2-10 BPM off though, which is a lot.If your training is based on shorter intervals and you rely on HR to guide effort frequently, as in tightly zone-based training, opt for chest strap over optical HRM and save some bucks on your watch as you won’t need this feature. Wrist based HR can have a delay in presenting changes in HR, so if for example you are doing a 30 sec interval at higher intensity, you may be done with the interval before your watch picks up the effort increase. One last note- 24x7 HR monitoring (am resting HR, avg resting HR) can be helpful for gaining a lens into when you may be over-fatigued, having trouble recovering from your training, or responding to other stressors in life. Fatigue and cumulative stress is an important metric to monitor for any athlete. Optical wrist HR does well with this application. Some general recommendations that we have are the following:Make sure that the watch is a GPS watch and doesn’t require you to run/swim with your phone.Make sure that it has good battery life if you’re going to be doing longer events.Make sure it’s waterproof.Make sure that the watch has some form of multisport setting. (Either built-in like Garmin or able to add like Coros, Suunto, etc.)Make sure that the watch can capture the metrics that you care about.GPS Wearables and Watches that We’ve UsedChris and Chipper both use the Garmin Fēnix 5 and would recommend it. It works well, has swimrun-specific settings, good battery life and it’s tough. Chris has used Suunto watches in the past but would always come back to Garmin. Chipper has always used Garmin watches for multisport events but hasn’t seen any reason to change.Brooke uses the Garmin Forerunner 735xt and has had it for three years. She loves it because it calculates open water and pool swim metrics like SWOL score and stuff like that. The battery life lasts about 9 hours for her which is less than advertised but still pretty long life. (This watch is currently on sale on Amazon for $229.95!)Annie also uses that Forerunner 735xt but first used the Suunto Ambit 3 Vertical for a long time. She had initially got the watch for its superior altimeter data collection (and because of the color: Bright Turquoise Blue) but she was disappointed with it when using it for Swimrun. The watch wasn’t easy to set up custom multisport settings. It did what it needed to do but it wasn’t ideal. Annie is super happy with her 735xt and recommends that people do not choose a watch based on the color. NOTE: it’s easy to change the color of the Garmin watch bands if you want to bedazzle your GPS watch look with one of these color bands kits. Here’s a handy list of the GPS wearables and watches that we know of that have Swimrun-specific or Multisport settings:GarminForerunner 735xtDescent MK1tactixFēnix 5, Fēnix 5s, and Fēnix 5xFēnix 6SuuntoAmbit 3SpartanSunnto 5Suunto 7Suunto 9CorosVertexApex ProApexPolarVantageGritOverall ImpressionsIn closing, we all agree that while having a GPS watch is totally optional for Swimrun, we would recommend making your life easy and make sure that whatever watch you use collects and sends your data to your preferred method of recording, e.g., Strava, Training Peaks, Garmin Connect, etc. We’re obviously fans of Garmin but they are by no means the only way to go.That’s it for this week’s Gear Talk show. Leadville: The 100 Mile Mountain Bike Race Podcast, p/b Floyd's of Leadville
There are dozens of training apps out there and nobody knows the intersection of training and tech than DC Rainmaker (Ray Maker IRL). Hottie, Fatty, and Ray talk about which apps can make the biggest difference in your training, which will give you the most Leadville-like experience as you prepare for the race, and where virtual training is heading in the future. It's a great episode with a ton of useful advice.

Simon, Shane and special guest co-host Ray Maker, also known as D C Rainmaker, are together in person in Amsterdam to discuss all the latest Zwiftiness. The three podcasters are gathered for Ray’s annual Winter Open House event where sports tech geeks get together over a few beers to discuss what’s hot and have fun. Simon spends some time amongst this well-informed and enthusiastic crowd asking two questions: What’s Zwift doing well and where could it improve? Elsewhere in this episode there’s a nice long chat with The Girl, Ray’s life partner and now business partner, on how the family and the blog is settling into life in Amsterdam. Simon, Shane and Ray discuss the implications of Ray’s scoop story about Zwift starting its own hardware division and Ray gets to join the Zwiftcast’s Guessing Club on Peak Zwift. The trio discuss just how much work remains to be done for eSports on Zwift to be successful and, after an interview with Peter Lago from Elite on whether the Italian company is a bit behind the pack in the Smart Bike race, the episode wraps up with Simon talking about his recent big decision: to get an e-Gravel Bike. We hope you enjoy listening.

This episode leads with the biggest news in indoor cycling of all time – the purchase of Dutch trainer company by American gizmo giant, Garmin. Simon, Shane and Nathan, with some help from D C Rainmaker, debate what this could mean for Zwift – and Zwifters. The Zwftcasters spend a good deal of time on this – and come up with a whole raft of theories, before moving on to discuss the continuing story of World Choice on the Zwift platform and how at times, the options available to Zwifters produce what some might see as surprising results. Next : have we seen a glimpse of the Watopia extension? And if we have, is the publication of a snippet hidden deep in the code justified? The podcasters move on to discuss the burgeoning and highly exciting racing scene, with the launch of the KISS Women’s Super League series, the entry into e-racing of global telco giant Telefonica and analysis of whether the improving coverage of virtual bike racing is a tantalising sign of the possible future. Finally, the chaps shed a tear for Jarvis Island, officially now consigned to history – we’ll never see the little island again. We hope you enjoy listening
Men minst lika bra! In och deltag!

One of the biggest advantages of running is that you don’t need a whole lot of equipment to do it. But because we rely so heavily on the little equipment we do need, most of us would rather go for another run than try to choose between the wide array of activity trackers, GPS watches, and power meters available to us within the ever-growing sport tech market. That’s where Ray Maker’s tech review blog, DC Rainmaker, can save you the time and energy not only picking the best product for you but also getting the absolute most out of that product. A longtime runner and triathlete, Ray is arguably the most respected sport tech guru out there, and his climb to the top isn’t what you’d probably imagine. During his spare time in high school, Ray started a one-man software company developing “programs” we now call apps - programs that garnered quite a lot of interest in Ray’s skills. Long story short, Ray went directly from his high school graduation to a full-time career in technology consulting just 36 hours later. Yeah. You might say he found his calling. After 15 years working in the Fortune 500 world, Ray left his job at Microsoft to devote his time to a new passion: helping runners like himself optimize their performance by getting the most out of their gadgets. From its honest product reviews to its exhaustive how-to guides, DC Rainmaker is an invaluable resource for runners everywhere, and Ray gives us an inside look in today’s episode. Questions Ray is asked: 4:09 What prompted you to start running? 5:12 What difficulties did you experience on your way to your sub-3:00:00 marathon? 7:50 Are you training for anything right now? 9:21 What did you do before you began tech reviews and your blog? 10:35 How has your blog grown and evolved? 12:26 How does your local Parisian running community engage with you? 14:00 Are you recognized and stopped when you’re back home? 16:41 What does “DC Rainmaker” mean? 18:01 How much time do you devote to reviewing a product? 19:14 How can fitness trackers be used for running and which ones are the best? 21:28 Do you think there are discrepancies between different software platforms and, if so, why? 23:43 Why is there so much variability with accuracy, even with devices from the same manufacturer and what environmental conditions may pose challenges for accurate data capture? 26:38 Which Garmin do you believe has the highest Bang-For-Buck ratio? 28:43 How does Optical Heart Rate monitoring differ from traditional methods and is it more accurate? 31:01 How much weight do you assign to using heart rate for pace-setting? 33:06 What are some of the pros and cons of the Apple Sport Watch, Garmin and GPS Watches and what would you recommend overall? 37:04 What other tips can you share to get more accurate data from our devices? 38:51 How can we prolong the lives of our running watches? 40:04 What is your opinion on power meters and how do they differ from GPS watches? 43:24 Do you think running by power units will ultimately replace running by heart rate? 45:29 Are power and heart rate best used in conjunction with each other? 45:37 What is the most common question runners ask you on your website? 46:45 What’s next for DC Rainmaker? Quotes by Ray: “If you’ve got all your friends on Fitbit, then get a Fitbit device. If you’ve got all your friends on Garmin, then get a Garmin device - for activity tracking anyway.” “For runners, you may want to use an activity tracker actually differently, which is to focus on recovery….because [fitness trackers] can hold you to kind of a limit, so say instead of trying to walk 10,000 steps today, I’m going to try to keep it below two or three thousand steps today.” “How different watches have their antennas designed usually around the face of the watch or the base of the watch is without the question the biggest thing that will impact accuracy on that watch.” “I’d say the biggest bang for your buck right now is probably the vivoactive HR or the new vivoactive 3 that was just announced.” “I think like anything else, you want to keep doing new and innovative things. And so as different areas of the market place stagnate or kind of become the same, I’m going to find other areas to dig into - whether that be running power or running efficiency metrics or whatever it may be - I’m going to dig deeper into those areas and see what pops out of them.” Want more awesome interviews and advice? Ray Maker (D C Rainmaker) is the most influential - and powerful - sports tech blogger in the world. His verdict on new products is respected by millions and many make the decision to purchase or reject a product after analysis of Ray's detailed and rigorous reviews. Ray talks to Simon frankly about the dilemmas which such influence produces and how he deals with it. Ray also talks about his relationships with sports tech companies and the need to be balanced and responsible in the face of the unexpected - like when a drone caught fire on his test bench. A geat insight into the way Ray works.
Simon, Shane and Nathan talk about the post-Tour blues, how they’re coping and how Zwift has leapt into the vacuum with a big announcement. But before they get to the launch of the Zwift Men’s Academy, the chaps discuss the arrival of Mark Cavendish on the platform. . . with a little help from Cav’s team-mate, Steve Cummings and his Directeur Sportif, Roger Hammond. The big news, though, is the Men’s Academy in partnership with Cav’s team, Dimension Data. Team owner Doug Ryder tells Simon why the decision to get involved was a no-brainer and describes his excitement at the benefit both to the team’s adopted charity, Qhubeka, and the potential to find a hidden gem of a new rider. Roger Hammond is equally excited and tells Simon how Zwift may help modernise recruitment to the pro peloton. There are important differences from the Women’s Academy scheme and the Zwiftcasters discuss what they are, why they might have been made and what is their likely impact. Zwiftcast resident Coach Kev Poulton discusses the theory behind his Four Week FTP Builder programme, a training plan that’s likely to prove very popular for Zwifters. Simon, Shane and Nathan then get excited about how training plans can be compared to moving piles of sand . . . . Steve Cummings gives Zwifters a little insight into how his rehab worked on Zwift and feels the same results can be achieved as Cav starts his long climb back to race pace using the platform to stay sharp. Finally, Simon pops into D C Rainmaker’s pain cave in Paris for a quick chat about what Eurobike may hold in store and why software challengers to Zwift may face an uphill battle.
Simon and Nathan get their teeth into a possible future for Zwift – in the form of Virtual Reality. With the Oculus Rift headset becoming more available and with Zwift already VR-capable, could this deeply immersive technology catch on in the fitness arena? Shane gives his first reactions to using the headset with Zwift and Simon and Nathan discuss some of the more obvious downsides as well as looking at the possibilities of this exciting technology. Some think the superb Zwift Academy scheme – which aims to use the platform to identify a potential professional female rider – has been flying a little under the radar. Not the hundreds of women who’ve been taking part in the rigorous programme of training over the summer, but perhaps this scheme isn’t as well known in the wider Zwift community as it might be. The podcast has three interviews with graduates of the Academy. Leah Thorvilson, Rachel Elliot and Bel Flint have all made it through to the final 12 riders – hear how they reacted to getting the news. Andrew Tilin is a veteran cyclist, an ex-racer and a high profile cycling journalist and author. He’s just completed an assignment investigating the appeal of Zwift for Outside magazine. Simon interviews him to discover more about his journey from cynic to convert. Scottie Weiss is a real Zwift veteran – he’s been on the platform from day one and the ex-professional rider is as used to showing the field a clean pair of heels as he is helping new Zwifters and leading Group Rides. This summer Scottie achieved two magnificent wins at the World Masters Championships in Austria. Simon talks to Scottie about the role Zwift played. And we have a little more from the sports tech guru Ray Maker, aka D C Rainmaker, who Simon spent some time with at Eurobike. This episode puts Ray on the spot and asks him to identify his favoured trainer at various price points.Ray also raises a tricky issue for US buyers – should they consider buying a trainer from European retailers who sometimes offer great deals and free shipping? “All good” says Ray, “until something goes wrong.”
Simon, Shane and special guest D C Rainmaker are at the biggest bike show in the world. These are exciting times for indoor riders and the excitement is reflected at Eurobike, where trainer manufacturers are showing their wares for the coming indoor season. D C Rainmaker, otherwise known as Ray Maker, makes a special guest appearance to discuss all the news with Simon and Shane, and concludes:”There has never been a better time to buy a Smart Trainer” The Zwiftcast tours the gigantic show, stopping for interviews with Tacx, whose Flux Smart Trainer was a show stealer; Wahoo, who launched the new Kickr; Elite, whose new Drivo is claimed to be the most accurate Smart Trainer in the world, and Cycle Ops, whose Hammer and Magnus are also promising great things. The Zwiftcast trio discuss how trainer manufacturers have responded to the new indoor riding world Zwift has helped create and how Zwift itself may cope with competitors in the market. We also discuss the trend for manufacturers to announce new product earlier and earlier – but struggle to deliver trainers to meet the demand at the start of the season. Shane and Ray also give their verdict on the most impressive thing they saw at the show.
Meet Ray Maker (pictured above). Via his website "", and his , Ray single-handedly tests, reviews and reports on nearly every self-quantification device that hits the market, including the latest devices from established players like Garmin and Polar, along with new companies like Strava, Zwift, Stages Cycling, 4iiii, and other brands that attract the attention of both the tech world, the bike market, the triathlon industry and beyond - often testing prototypes months before a product is brought to market. Ray often operates beneath the radar of the traditional, brick-and-mortar, ink-on-paper side of the bike world, but shockingly, his site, which he runs entirely by himself, is the sixth most popular bicycling website on the planet. He's even been listed in Runner's World as one of "The 50 Most Influential People In Running". Ray is an avid triathlete and runner, and despite operating DC Rainmaker still works full-time in the IT industry, in a position that requires him to travel the world constantly. He's an American, but now lives in Paris, France, with his wife. His far-flung trips are part of the appeal of his website, as he reports not just on technology, but also on his adventures running, biking and swimming around the globe. A true fitness geek, Ray puts the gadgets he tests through rigorous evaluations, reporting on the nitty gritty details, flaws, benefits, pros, cons, and even delivers the first-hand reports on the latest firmware updates for various devices. He does things like mount multiple power meters on his bike, or wears several heart monitors at once, and often delivers intricate multi-thousand word reports and reviews on every device he tests. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Ray's crazy story of testing the ... -How Ray makes money on his website by reviewing devices... -The coolest piece of self-quantification technology Ray has ever used... -Ray's most recommended piece of technology... -How much of racing and training technology is just the 'same ol', vs. truly groundbreaking technology... -What a device must do to break the mold and fit into that ground-breaking category... -How Ray keeps from being "biased" by products he receives and reviews... -What Ray uses to track sleep... -The effects of alcohol on training... -Ray's thoughts on the of bluetooth, wireless and wifi devices? -Whether Ray just "unplugs" and go by feel... -Ray's #1 recommended vacation and must-see spot for active people or athletes... -What Ray thinks is the next biggest trend in athlete quantification... How's everybody doing? We made it to the end of January. Even though my wife insisted we come home from Phoenix a day early to avoid the big East Coast storm, we got nothing here northwest of Boston. No snow at all! I think she probably was just sick of me. Who can blame her! I'm training away again. I'm healthy and feel great. I sat down with my coach and talked over the marathon and now we have our sights set on turning in a good time at Boston. Like I said I think my training was too inconsistent for Phoenix. I also wasn't doing enough core and strength work. Coach had me do a leg work out last Monday and I could barely sit down for two days. I was definitely weak in the hips, glutes and quads even with all the miles I was getting in. Running is a funny sport. I'm also on a clean nutrition kick. I weighed in after the vacation at 189.4, which is close to 10 pounds heavier than where I want to race at. I'm eating mostly fruit and veg now for a week and I'm enacting a beer-breakup. With the amount of exercise I do I lost 6 pounds in 3 days and actually had to work some more calories in. I'm going to see if I can lean up over the next couple months. It's not about ‘going on a diet' or calorie counting per se. Those are certainly tools you can use. For me it's about eating clean so that my body can recover and I can be in the best shape possible in April. For today's show I grabbed veteran blogger DC RainMaker for a chat about the state of device technology. Ray started blogging device reviews back in 2007 when I started podcasting. He has managed to turn his hobby into a full time job. We talk about where we are, where we have been and where we are going on the tech front. It's interesting. It makes you wonder what the heck we are going to be doing in 10 and 20 years! …It's been a weird January for everyone. Last week I got up early packed my running stuff. Since it's January I threw in tights, gloves, sweater, hats – you know – winter running kit. I get up from my desk to go running at lunch and it's close to 50 degrees out! Following the no excuses rule one day I ran in winter tights, winter hat and a tee shirt. The following day I ran in short-shorts, a running jacket and gloves. It really doesn't matter. You just have to get out there. One lesson I apparently have to be taught over and over is not to pack my bag when I get up in the morning. This invariably leads to some unfortunate clothing combinations or lack thereof. On with the Show! If anyone has a particularly interesting piece of writing around 1500 words they'd like to submit for me to read into one of the show sections – I'm willing if you are! After 7 ½ years of this I sometimes feel like I'm tapping a dry well. I was poking around in the RunRunLive 1.0 archives this week and listened to some of the single digit episodes. I guess this is one of those lyceum-like, TedTalky sort of, I don't know, but one of my personal guidelines is to accept all invitations to present. You know how much value I think there is in presentation skills in general. I believe it is something we all should cultivate and stage time is one of the best ways to practice it. The format for these presentations was 20 slides, with a 15 second auto-advance per slide. A bang, bang, bang presentation flow. I was intrigued. The topic was loosely ‘data'. I looked at the presenters and they were all tech people. I looked at the agenda and I was the last of 7. That means it was me between them and the complimentary drinks. I thought to myself, “Well, I'm screwed.” First, I'm not a deep tech guy. Second, I don't know that much practical stuff about Data. Sure I could manufacture some overview of industry data uses, but in the position of last presenter I'd be forgettable. The game was rigged to focus on my not-strengths and not my strengths. How could I flip the tables on this? What do I bring that these folks didn't? What talents do I have that they don't? Well, I know how to communicate. I know how to present and I know all about marathons. I decided to use the kobayashi maru subterfuge and change the game in my favor. I created an entertaining presentation around marathon data. Of course as I'm watching these other presentations with their flow charts and SQL code I'm wondering if I'm making a really bad decision. I start to get nervous that this audience will be slack-jawed and confused by me being off topic. Then I smile and remember one of the rules of presenting, which is you have to go all in. You have to commit to your topic and your speech. It doesn't matter if it is good or bad. You have to sell it. You have to live it. Because if you go all in the audience will go with you. They won't get a choice. They'll get sucked into your gravity well. I rocked it. They loved it. I had a blast. Commit, go all in, sell it – and l'll see you out there. ONE STEP AHEAD: All bunged up and can’t go? Why that might be happening and possible solutions to constipation for athletes. HOT PROPERTY INTERVIEW - PAUL LAURSEN: This week we bring back Professor Paul Laursen to talk to us about RICES (Rest/Ice/Compression/Elevation and more recently Stretching). Paul is a Performance Physiologist working with High Performance Sport NZ out of the Millennium Institute in Albany. Traditionally it was always thought we should RICE our injuries but is that still good advice? Paul and Bevan discuss why this is now being challenged. We also talk 'cold water immersion' - currently used after hard training to aid recovery - and its usefulness for athletes. THE GEEK OUT: The 'Central Governor' theory - a proposed process in the brain that regulates exercise in regard to neurally calculated safe exertion by the body. Bevan looks at the research behind this theory. 5 MINUTE FOCUS: We talk to Dustin Freckleton of BSXinsight, the company behind the world's first non-invasive, wearable lactate sensor. BSXinsight uses revolutionary technology that allows you to look inside your muscle, measuring your lactate threshold and generating personalized training zones.
