Many years ago, Hatsumi-Sensei penned an article that was titled: “Pride Goes Before the Fall”. In it he discussed how one's belief systems and bad habits, while allowing for certain success in certain areas will, eventually, cause them to fail. And, when that failure comes, it very often causes a catastrophic crash to rock bottom […]

I was really fortunate to spend some time with Buzz when I hosted our Martial Arts Media™ Intensive event, which was part of the Bushi Ban Power Week hosted by none other than Grandmaster Zulfi Ahmed. As part of the Bushi Ban Power Week, we hosted the Martial Arts Media™ Intensive, and I had Buzz share a talk in regards to retention and keeping students for life and how they basically work all their marketing from the ground up. I was so inspired by the speech; well, so was everyone else. He got a true standing ovation, and I invited him to speak at one of our events online, which is the Partners Intensive. Our members were just blown away by the information. I wanted to bring that over to you as part of the podcast, so I'm going to share a video on this page. If you want to go visit it, martialartsmedia.com/147.Buzz shared a video during his talk showing how every Saturday, how much experience, and how many black belts they have. It ranged from four years to, I think, 44 years of experience, and I can't recall counting. There were at least 20, 30, got to be like 30 people at least.Anyway, Buzz is truly a master at keeping it simple, keeping students for life, and he's got some valuable strategies to share. So, without further ado, jump in all the show notes on martialartsmedia.com/147. That's the numbers one, four, seven. Jump in. I'm happy to be here with you, George.GEORGE: Good to see you again, and we'll loop back to that story. But a question I always like to ask first is, what's the number one thing that you do to attract new students into your school?BUZZ: Well, the number one thing we do after all these years that's evolved is internal marketing. We do internal marketing with some social presence, too. We do a lot of posting on Facebook, and Instagram, just about every day or at least every other day. Our main venue for acquiring new students is through internal marketing. Parent's nights out, pizza parties, and birthday parties, where we encourage our students to bring their friends, inviting their friends and school teachers to our black belt promotions. So, we concentrate mainly on the student body that we have

Ever daydreamed about traveling to East Asia and studying under the great martial arts masters? American Chris Bates did just this, first coming to Taiwan in 1976 to study Mandarin and train in martial arts. Follow Chris' journey, from meeting the eccentric Liao Wuchang (the Monkey Boxer), training under the retired general and Shaolin master Kao Fanghsien, to getting a wife. John and Chris also discuss other notable figures, including Donn Draeger and Robert Smith, two Americans who helped bring East Asian martial arts to the West. Chris would gravitate toward the internal Chinese martial arts (xingyiquan in particular), training since the early 1980s under the acclaimed Hong Yixiang and his sons. In fact, Chris has just translated Blurred Boundaries, a magnificent biography of the late Master Hong. Chris wraps things up talking about his latest book, the timely novel Rise of the Water Margin. Hey, friends welcome to another bonus track episode on Everybody Speaks Music and today's a special one, you're gonna get to hear my recent training session with Ean Kramer. Ean was on our show a few weeks ago and he graciously invited me to come to his dojo and train. Now as awesome as that sounds, it comes with a bunch of anticipation nerves, and I wanted to capture that part of the journey. So as soon as I hopped in the van, I hit record. And it was interesting to just process my thoughts. Normally, I'd be meditating, listening to some calm music, or doing something to take my mind off of it. So recording this episode was great because it leapt deep into my subconscious, all the warts and all the embarrassing moments are there for you to laugh about. And then we recorded the aftermath. What happened after my two hour training session, and I really hope you get a lot of value out of that. Because often I find as a musician, it's best to look outside of my craft to pick up new tips and tricks. So whether that's looking into athletics, or business, or any other domain, I can take those concepts and bring them back into how I approach my practicing, and how I approach my growth as a musician. And Ean does an amazing job of laying out the parallels between martial arts and music. He uses the analogy of the body as being the instrument. And I think you're gonna find a lot of interesting parallels there. And at the very end of the episode, I'm also going to attach a clip of Ean, where he did a follow up from the episode he wanted to dive even deeper into the parallels of music and martial arts. So I hope you enjoyed today's bonus episode. Thanks for listening. And don't forget to go out and and face your fears, do the things that you really want to do, even if they feel uncomfortable. We all feel that natural resistance to doing things that are new, and uncomfortable. But I can tell you from this experience with in how much pain intention of properly guided training session could actually remove from my body. Thanks again.

Episode one of The Buddhist Millionaire Podcast aired sixteen months ago amidst the dark days of COVID. Initially, it was a way to extend conversations I'd begun in my book How to be a Buddhist Millionaire: 9 practical steps to being happy in a materialist world. A Buddhist Millionaire is the name I give to someone who dares to make an abundant living doing work they love. Episode one soon gave way to episodes two, three, four… Before we knew it, we had aired an entire season. Now here we are at the conclusion of season three. I am delighted to share today's guest with you all. I love all my guests, but none more so than Regis Lima. We met on the Jit Jitsu mats at the World Masters Championships in Vegas. We have been pen pals ever since. Regis is an inspiration like no other. He is the epitome of Buddhist Millionaire-ship, an utter gentleman and a gift to the world. If you have ever doubted yourself or thought your dreams were too outlandish and that you were too old to chase them, then this episode is defiantly (no, not a spelling mistake) for you. Please take the time to like, comment and share this episode with someone you think might benefit. We need your help spreading the 'Buddhist Millionaire' word. See you in season four. Lots of love. Matt and the team x
Show Notes 04:08 - 08:33 Journey to discovering Martial Arts The beauty of chaos is the peace you see in its midst. In chaos, I saw the most peaceful moment of my life—no masks, limitations, ego. You are free. All of the old ways of thinking are somehow turned off and you become truly present. When choosing between fight or flight, remember that having courage is a choice inside of fear, not the absence of fear. 09:41- 10:56 Finding the authentic self and finding who we're not The authentic self is the unbiased noticing observer that you are. The martial arts path teaches that the enemy was never outside, it's that voice within. We are a collection of our wounds from rejection, betrayal, and abandonment, which makes us seek security, control and approval. That constant seeking is the enemy. 11:09- 17:41 Quieting the chatter and getting into flow We try to trigger to get into flow. But flow is natural. We just have to figure out what can stop us from falling out of it. The trying itself creates expectations and tensions that actually impede it. Flow is always present. Flow is being. Flow is really us, devoid of these other things. But we stop being in the flow because of our attachments to victory and defeat, to people, places and things, and to security, control and approval. The thoughts will keep coming. But we have to be aware of who is thinking. 17:45 - 19:58 Five by Five by Five Challenge: Simple practice you can do to rid the things that block your flow and change your perspective. For five days, five times a day for five minutes, you set a time alone. Focus on your breathing and try to achieve stillness of the breath, mind and body. The stillness of the body is when you stop and sit straight. The stillness of breath lies at that moment between the inhale and the exhale while the stillness of the body. The stillness of the mind lies in the breath. 20:01 - 23:13 Deepening your awareness Practice deepening the awareness of yourself, of others, and the situation. Between the stimulus and our response. And in that space, we choose our response. This is the same foundation for making the choice for building healthy habits. 23:13 - 28:27 Building a conscious operating system The greatest move of all in martial arts is the time out. It is the ability to pause, breathe, step back, survey the situation without an emotional attachment and see clearly for what it is and then choose a response. We can build this system and ability: the CQ (conscious quotient). 28:37 - 33:27 The Stillness Method We have to stop reacting in the tensions created from our reactions by training to cultivate three stillnesses: Stillness in stillness: in a seated posture, not moving Stillness in movement: start to move and maintain the stillness Stillness in movement in chaos: peace in the chaos 33:34 - 35:32 There's no hack to tap into consciousness. The secret is in the ways in training—in transformation. You have to go do the work to do it, that's why it's priceless. Especially for men, practice listening. 35:44 - 40:20 Discipline Over Doubt It's NOT a discipline problem; it's a self-worth and self-love problem. The primary response system should be self-love and discipline is the emergency response system. That way, it is more sustainable. 41:10 - Free yourself from you We thought that getting our power back is by exerting power over others and being able to control it. But the truth is, conquering yourself is what makes you fearless. Death frees you and allows you to live from moment to moment and to become passionate and kind. And that takes strength.

Martial Arts Journey: Started training in college, but realized I could hurt someone, so I quit. While still in college I got over that and began training seriously in several arts. Continued training under different teachers in different styles until I settled in Taekwondo, where I earned my black belt in 1978. Progressed through the ranks while teaching school, then got FIRED as a basketball coach, so quit as a teacher and administrator. Continued training and worked as an educational consultant for a private company and got FIRED from that job, so decided to become a full-time martial artist. Taught full time and managed a school, then moved up into a management company for hundreds of schools in the US and Canada. I wrote newsletters, designed ads and promotions, wrote and edited a magazine, produced webinars and more to help the school owners run a more successful school and business. Developed a comprehensive after school martial arts program and co-authored several books, and after 30 years, retired with the rank of 9th Dan Grandmaster. ** AUDIO: SPOTIFY http://spoti.fi/3bMYVYW GOOGLE PODCASTS http://bit.ly/38yH3yP Edits by Claudine Smith- Email: casproductions01@gmail.com ** CONVERSATIONS WITH CALVIN WE THE SPECIES PLEASE SUBSCRIBE (You can almost get any subject interview you want) #animalwelfare #animalrescue #springsteen #gilbertgottfried #FunnyFarm #infertility #filmmaking #nutrition #womenshealth #UFO #NASA #climatechange #singersongwriter #comedy #g #adoption ** CLIMATE UPDATE: Latest IPCC climate change report finds 'irreversible' impact of global warming IT'S N0W OR NEVER: Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released its second chapter on the impact of climate change. Master Rahsun was passionate about music and martial arts growing up in Brooklyn. He took on martial arts because he wanted to learn how to defend himself when he was younger so he could always have the upper hand in a street fight. However, as he grew up, he decided he would focus on the music for a while. After about 10 years, Rahsun had made a name for himself in the music industry but didn't exactly click with the business side of it all. That's when he decided to follow his heart and change his career to something he was passionate about: Martial Arts. In this episode, Master Rahsun and I chat about his experiences in both the music and martial arts industry, what it was like training under Grandmaster William Cheung, who introduced Bruce Lee to Yip Man back in the 1950's, and some of his celeb clients he currently trains. Show Notes As we grow, form our self-identity, and dream of a future full of work we love that uses our great gifts and strengths most of us come face to face with ways that society – including peers, institutions, and groups, including our family of origin – tell us we can't or we shouldn't or aren't able to have those dreams because of who or what we are. That's especially true for girls and young women. Changes are being made of course, but restrictions still exist. And sometimes our own thoughts and beliefs feed into those restrictions. Often we spend the first portion of our lives living up to others expectations and then something happens that helps us to break free and decide to create a life that's consistent with our own beliefs and expectations. Today's guest is a great example of all of that. Jodi Harrison Lee is a Martial Arts Master, co-owner of the martial arts studio, The Martial Way in LA county California. She's also a best selling author, speaker and trainer whose core mission is helping girls and women to find an embrace their strength, exude the confidence they have deep inside, and be able to defend themselves in any situation they're in. So Listen in as Jodi and I discuss: How young girls lose their confidence and how they can regain it How we often allow the opinions of others and beliefs of society to pigeon hole us and keep us trapped in a place we weren't meant to be The how sports and athletics lead to increased confidence and courage for children and adults. How easy it is to allow societal structures to keep us playing small Tips for finding and embracing your own inner strength As always listen all the way to the end where I'll share your cocktail exercise and action step for this episode. Soon after recovery, he broke the Guinness World Record for most punches in 60 seconds with a single arm. He took on his challenge to raise money and awareness of Mcardle disease, the condition that threatened his health and his life’s passion. In this episode, Vik explains how despite continuously being in the face of bad news, he was able to maintain a determined mindset. He tells the story of how after his major health struggle, he had to learn how to bend his toes, sit up, and walk. In order to function again as an adult, Vik had to go through baby steps to recovery. He credits his strong will and work ethic to his parents. His resilient story of pain, struggle, and growth continues to inspire people to never give up and to keep “going through the process.”
