EMAIL us: kitschforkpodcast@gmail.com we continue on with our Best New Music circa 2003 era of Kitschfork by taking a visit back to the biggest apple of them all, Nu Yawk City baybee, in this special twofer episode. we first take a dip into 00's dancepunk revival with the ungoogleable !!!'s "Me and Giuliani Down By The Schoolyard" single (which curiously landed a 7.8 on Pitchfork but still made Best New Music), a thing we feel... sort of whatever about. and then we unearth a popular Brooklyn indie rock band's first notable release with TV On The Radio's "Young Liars" EP - both released on Touch & Go in 2003. we talk bygone trends of 00's music and its 70's/80's obsession, gentrification, Celebrity Deathmatch, Eric Adams's horrible mayorship, and... much more. this is the article about video game music interpolation in indie pop by Drew Mackie mentioned on the episode: https://www.thrillingtalesofoldvideogames.com/blog/star-maze-mario-land-2-owen-pallett

When it came time to meet with Vancouver's dance-rock makers, Young Liars (no using “the” please!), we agreed to do the interview at the band's practice space (at a mystery location somewhere in east van). Night of the meet, the band would only give me two cross streets. When I got to the intersection, two members of the band came out and escorted me into the secret lair of Young Liars. I was either going to be murdered or have a funny conversation with one of Vancouver's up-and-coming talents. Tracks played on the show... 1) Young Liars, Homesick Future EP "Echoists" 2) Young Liars, Homesick Future EP "Echoists" (background) 3) Young Liars, Homesick Future EP "Homesick Future" 4) Young Liars, Colours EP "Colours" (Teen Daze Remix) ALL songs CANCON

Young Liars is a series put out by David Latham - I'll leave the critiques and insights for those more versed in these matters, suffice to say that I liked what I read. Not that it mattered - like nearly every series I jump at, I am looking at you Top10, Young Liars died to soon it's story untold. Not just a loss of a title but a loss of a unigue story. A rare thing at any time. "Young Liars is a wholly different beast It’s a VERY personal book. No one could do this book but me because it’s about my brain and everything I like and feel. Stray Bullets is like that. No one else can possibly do it. It’s why I could do things in Young Liars like put in song recommendations and it wasn’t gratuitous. It was fun, yes, but it also fit the nature of the book. It became a very unique place to work inside every months and is the toughest part of letting it go." - David Lapham, from Mindless Ones Interview And if you like a thing and that thing has in it little musical references you'll do the only sensible thing which is to wrangle each track from the ether then string them together into a mixtape they were never intended to become. Mixtape Archaeology. Here we go, from the top: David Bowie - Let's Dance Battles - Atlas Suicide - Frankie Teardrop (Abbreviated Version) ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead - Another Morning Stoner Wire - Strange Tears for Fears - Mad World Rolling Stones - Rocks Off The Rapture - Pieces of the People We Love Pixies - Bone Machine Sonic Youth - Shaking Hell The Fall - Oleano Mission of Burma - That's When I Reach For My Revolver Thanks to Mindless One's and David Lapham Image from: mindlessones.com/tag/david-lapham/ Currently Digging: My Goodness: A Cynic's Short-Lived Search for Sainthood by Joe Queenan

Funnybook Babylon has notice a trend: first issues from Vertigo are often given lukewarm or negative reviews, but once the series develops, we change our tune. It happened with Air, it happened with Young Liars (at least for some of us), and as we’ve previously panned the first issues of Greek Street (Episode 107) and […]
