This episode discusses all seven volumes of Alice 19th by Yuu Watase.Sisters Alice Seno and Mayura Seno end up falling for the same handsome boy, Kyo, and their fight for his affection threatens to destroy the whole world. That's a bit of an oversimplification, but the general gist of Watase's Alice 19th. Chika and Giana from the podcast Shoujo Sundae join Shojo and Tell host Ashley to talk about the battle between the Lotis Masters and Maram Masters, where words are turned into magical but very deadly violence. We discuss the influences of September 11, 2001, on the story, Watase's efforts at diversity and inclusion, whether we consider Alice a magical girl or not, and more. REFERENCESAlice 19th is available from Viz Media's Shojo Beat lineOther Watase series mentioned:Absolute BoyfriendImadoki!Fushigi YuugiFushigi Yuugi: Genbu KaidenFushigi Yuugi: Byakko SenkiAppare Jipangu!CeresArataOther anime/manga series mentioned:Sailor MoonCardcaptor SakuraInuYashaAttack on TitanOuran High School Host ClubThe Vision of EscaflowneOther media mentioned:The Lord of the Rings (movies)Atlantis (movie)RRR"Synchronised Sinking" by The LucksmithsOutro song: "The Streatham Hill Gods" by DanosongsCONTACT USShoujo Sundae on Twitter: @ShoujoSundaeChika on Twitter: @chikasupremeChika on Instagram: @chikasupremeGiana on Twitter: @Giana_Luna_Giana on Instagram: @giana_luna_Shojo & Tell on Twitter, Tumblr, and InstagramAshley's Tales of Xillia fanfic: Well Suited

This episode discusses all six volumes of Absolute Boyfriend by Yuu Watase. The Ashes are back to do a compare and contrast between two shojo heavyweights, Yuu Watase and CLAMP. Last episode we covered Chobits even though it's a seinen series, partially because we're determined to read every CLAMP series, and partially because we knew Absolute Boyfriend appears to have taken heavy inspiration from Chobits and shojo-ified it. We talk about how Absolute Boyfriend handles sex and A.I. compared to Chobits, whether it's magical and dreamy that your boyfriend can be destroyed and have to go to the Apple Store, and are thankful that, at the very least, Riko is not a schmuck. (Although, she might be the high school female equivalent of a schmuck? You decide after hearing how she handled her love triangle between the figure, Night, and her best friend, Soshi.)REFERENCESAbsolute Boyfriend is available in English from Viz Media's Shojo Beat lineWhy do they keep making live action adaptations of this??Other Watase series mentioned:Fushigi YugiFushigi Yugi: Genbu KaidenFushigi Yugi: Byakko SenkiCeresArataSakura-GariOther CLAMP series mentioned:Legal DrugXMisc. mentions:MeganeBoss BabyTwilightMagical GirlfriendNoragamiBioShockHatsune MikuIAOutro song: "The Streatham Hill Gods" by DanosongsCONTACT USAsher on Archive of Our Own: @dasheryShojo & Tell on Twitter, Tumblr, and InstagramAshley's Tales of Xillia fanfic: Well Suited

All four talk about the points at which they cried, and how much (not Soren!!), make fun of Efinluka's name (.... well, how would you pronounce it?), and ponder if Takiko and Uruki having sex while Uruki presents female would upset the god, Genbu. On this episode of Manga Mavericks, Colton & Lum once again tackle more news from the world of manga! We also discuss a lot of new manga from various publishers, including three new doujinshi from Irodori Comics' LGBTQ-focused imprint Irodori Sakura, as well as three new simulpubs! We start off with the manga adaptation of Japan Sinks 2020 exclusively on Mangamo, followed by Ghost Reaper Girl from Shonen Jump, and last but not least, Lockdown Zone: Level X from Denpa! It's a cool collection of new series that we were very excited to talk about and we hope you all check them out!  Unfortunately, we also had to address the arrest of Tatsuya Matsuki, the writer of Act-Age, and the subsequent fallout, such as the cancellation of the series in Shonen Jump and everything else related to it. Our hearts go out to the victims of Matsuki's crimes, as well as Shiro Usazaki, whose artistic talent was responsible for bringing the world and characters of Act-Age to life, and we hope she is able to find more work and success in the future. This is a review of Fushigi Yugi: Byakko Senki volume 1, a new series by Yuu Watase that's going to be released by Viz.Whether you've read the original Fushigi Yugi and Genbu Kaiden or not, you should be hype for the latest (and last) installment in Yuu Watase's beloved series. Byakko Senki is set slightly after Genbu Kaiden and follows Suzuno as she struggles with the sudden loss of her parents and being the destined priestess inside The Universe of the Four Gods. Fushigi Yugi has always been dark, but this first volume is the heaviest of the series yet. Shojo & Tell host Ashley and her boytoy Asher run through all the heavy events of this volume and about what they're excited to see in the future. (Which brother is Tatara?!?!)REFERENCESFushigi Yugi: Byakko Senki volume 1 is being released  by Viz Media's Shojo Beat line in August 2020. Please note that at this time, the series is on hiatus and no other volumes exist.Watase has come out as x-gender, which is a nonbinary gender. The Shojo Beat Tumblr says Watase's pronouns are still she/hers. Covers volumes 10-18 of Fushigi Yugi by Yu Watase We’re back to talk about the strange saga of Fushigi Yugi’s ending and how Tamahome became Taka, or Taka was always Taka but he allowed Tamahome to exist, one’s a shadow, something like that. Just trust us on this one. Ashley, Caitlin, and Jess also discuss how Miaka and Yui have matured after one of them was consumed by a dragon god (oh, they also graduated middle school), how a young Yu Watase may have been underestimating the power of shojo manga, and, most importantly, everybody weighs in on which of the Celestial Warriors has the best hair. LINKS Fushigi Yugi (and Fushigi Yugi: Genbu Kaiden) is available from Viz Media’s Shojo Beat line Fushigi Yugi: Byakko Senki is currently running in Japan Request Viz to pick up Byakko Senki So here’s why Ashley butchered Caitlin’s intro: Ashley’s partner Jeff (who works at Viz) has a sibling who had a blog called Heroine Sheik, and Caitlin runs a site called I Have a Heroine Problem (link below), and Ashley’s brain conflated those two and then her mouth said the wrong thing. We’re taking a short break from Shonen Jump-related podcast to talk about a creator celebrating a special 50th anniversary milestone – Go Nagai! 2018 is the 50th year of the legendary mangaka's career, and he’s seen a resurgence of popularity thanks to a slew of new anime based on his works like Mazinger Z: Infinity, Cutie Honey Universe, and most famously, Devilman Crybaby! To celebrate Go Nagi’s legacy and the renaissance of his work in the anime community, we’re discussing the original Devilman manga, recently released in the U.S. for the first time in a beautiful hardcover edition courtesy of Seven Seas! Joining us is our good friend and devilishly handsome Go Nagai devotee Josh Dunham, host of Senpai Coast to Coast of co-founder of Wave Motion Cannon! We go over Go Nagi’s career, what inspired him to write Devilman, and how his personal demons may have carried over into his work. Josh provides a ton of wonderful insight on the chaotic, anarchic mind of Nagai, making for one of our best analytical discussion so far! This podcast has literally been two years in the making – we’ve been planning to do a Devilman podcast with Josh since we first had him on the show all the way back in July 2016, so it’s exciting to see it finally come to fruition! Sit back and listen as we explore the macabre world of Devilman and gleam as many insights we can from its dark and twisted world. But first, we’ve got our usual news roundup to go through! We discuss the Oricon Top Selling Manga list, which has some surprising series making it on to the top ten! Then, we discuss the deaths of several manga magazines in print, and speculate whether this trend heralds the end for manga magazines in general. Plus we discuss a lot of new manga, new licenses, and new anime that we’re really looking forward to! Manga Mavericks has lasted an entire year! We've done so much in such a short time, and we couldn't have done it without your support! Thank you for listening and giving feedback on our podcasts. We have great things planned for 2017 as well, so stay tuned and stick around for what we've got in store! In the meantime, we've set up a year-end poll for you guys to take to gather some statistics and help us make the show better. Included are questions asking for your guys' opinions on future topics and guests we should have on the show, so please take the poll and give us some suggestions! Once again, though, we want to thank you guys for listening to our show and overall being awesome. And now, to end 2016 with a bang! 2016 was not a great year for life, but it was a great year for manga! So this week your titular Mavericks Colton and Sid list off their favorite things from manga in 2016, from news, to new licenses, to the best currently running series and best series finale! But first we have to round off the year with a whole heap of news, including Oricon's best selling manga of 2016 list, Diamond's Top 30 GNs of November 2016 list, the smorgasbord of new manga coming out next year, the big plans for One Piece next year, and of course, the most important bit of news, the new Dragon Ball spinoff manga where Yamcha is the main character. Yes, that Yamcha. Manga reveiw of chapter 2 of Arata The Legend by Yuu Watase. Last we saw of Arata, he was being swallowed up by a forest and Kannagi was stating that he would have to come back as an entirely different person. Chapter 2 opens in modern Japan with another Arata getting ready for his first day at high school. On the way to school he helps catch a butt grabbing pervert on the train and instantly becomes a celeb to his classmates. He ends up making friends pretty easily until a month later a guy named Masato Kadowaki shows up. Apparently, he bullied Arata during middle school and made his life a living hell until he was treated like a leper. Surely, Arata thinks, this school is different. He has true friends here that won’t betray him. I am still amazed by Yuu Watase’s complete shift in art styles to meld better with the shonen genre. If I knew nothing about her and had scenes from Arata and Ceres next to each other, there is probably no way I would guess they were by the same artist. I was also impressed with the writing of chapter 2. Watase really won you over to the protagonist’s side very fast. Towards the end of the chapter, we see how this new Arata is going to interact with the plot of the earlier storyline. Shows a lot of promise. My Grade: A Manga Review of Hyde & Closer Chapter 2 by Haro Aso: Shunpei Closer is able to convince himself that the events of chapter 1 were all a bad dream until he walks in on his mom cooking breakfast for Hyde, an enchanted stuffed teddy bear. His mom doesn't seem to have any problem accepting all the unusual happenings. In fact, she thinks it's kinda cool and wants to tell all the neighbors! Meanwhile, another "Death Curse" is sent out to steal Shun's heart and this time he's gonna have to learn how to fight some of his own battles...or Shun is going to find himself a lifeless corpse. I'm still having a hard time seeing this title as anything but mindless entertainment, but the bizarre surreal humor is starting to grow on me. It reminds me of another goofy title, The Law of Ueki. The battles between ridiculous toys lends the whole thing an over the top quality that makes you giggle. It's still too early for the Death Curse of the week to wear on your nerves. Relax and have a bit of fun with this series. My Grade: B+ View chapters 1&2 of both series for free at: www.shonensunday.com

Podcast manga review of the first chapters of Arata: The Legend by Yuu Watase and Hyde & Closer by Haro Aso. Both titles are available for free at www.shonensunday.com Arata: The Legend by Yuu Watase: In a mythical world where humans and gods co-exist, a ceremony marking the new governing princess is about to occur for the first time in 60 years. Only a girl from the Hime Clan may take this position, but the lack of females born to this family means that a boy called Arata must pose for the role. Meanwhile in modern-day Japan, a boy named Arata Hinohara is starting his new life in high school. He wants to put memories of his difficult past behind him, but things aren’t going to be simple when he discovers a mysterious connection to the first Arata... My Grade: A Hyde and Closer by Haro Aso: Shunpei Closer is your average…well, slightly below average kid in junior high who finds himself in the middle of a great battle of dark sorcery. With cursed dolls coming after him one after another, Shunpei Closer’s life is in danger! If that weren’t enough, Hyde, the teddy bear given to him by his grandfather, suddenly comes alive to rescue him. With Hyde’s help, can Shunpei save himself and live to see another day? My Grade: B+
