Other countries have wealth funds. We have nothing,” Trump said during his speech to The Economic Club of New York, adding that the U.S. fund would be financed by tariffs “and other intelligent things.” According to the Sovereign Wealth Fund Institute, roughly 100 funds currently manage nearly $13 trillion in assets. That includes a handful of U.S. states including Alaska, Texas, New Mexico and others which have set up their own types of government-run funds initially financed by oil, gas and mineral resources. Trump now wants to do the same at the federal level. BUFFALO, NY- June 24, 2024 – A new editorial paper was published in Oncotarget's Volume 15 on June 14, 2024, entitled, “Leveraging gold nanostars for precision laser interstitial thermal therapy.” In this new editorial, researchers Aden P. Haskell-Mendoza, Ethan S. Srinivasan, Tuan Vo-Dinh and Peter E. Fecci from Duke University discuss laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT). Over the past decade, LITT has become an important tool for the neurosurgical treatment of a variety of intracranial pathologies, including focal epilepsies, vascular malformations, and central nervous system (CNS) tumors [1]. LITT involves the minimally invasive, stereotactically-guided placement of a laser catheter into a target lesion for subsequent thermal ablation via the delivery of infrared radiation, typically at wavelengths of 980–1064 nm [1, 2]. Following transfer of the patient to a scanner, real-time magnetic resonance (MR) thermometry is employed to track tissue hyperthermal ablation. “For patients with primary and metastatic brain tumors who are suboptimal candidates for craniotomy due to clinical status, wound healing concerns, or tumor location, LITT represents a particularly favorable option for reducing tumor burden.” However, successful ablation is limited by the (1) inability to precisely sculpt heat to cover or conform to large (typically, ≥3 cm) or irregular lesions, (2) the presence of various intracranial heat sinks, including cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) spaces and blood vessels, and (3) the sensitivity of uninvolved white and gray matter structures to inadvertent thermal damage [1–3]. “To aid in the performance of more efficient, conformal, and accordingly, safe ablations, we recently developed procedures for the use of gold nanostars (GNS, Figure 1) [2]." In parts of Aotearoa you can see rocks left over from when Zealandia and Gondwana separated around 100 to 60 million years ago. Zealandia - Te Riu-a-Maui - is right underneath us, and was the last continent to be discovered. It's now the first to be mapped all the way out to its watery edges. 95 per cent of Zealandia is underwater. In 2017, GNS scientists outlined the continent and have just finished filling in the blanks. Dr Nick Mortimer is a geologist at the Dunedin GNS office and the lead author of a new study on North Zealandia. He speaks to Jesse.

It's been a year since torrential rain caused devastating flooding in the Marlborough District resulting in a very scarred landscape, and disrupted lives and livelihoods. The August 2022 weather event followed one in July the previous year - which combined caused 8000 landslides. Marlborough District Council environmental scientist Matt Oliver says the extensive damage is not all weather related and human behavior has been a major contributing factor to instability in the area - including the clearing of native trees. This was born out in recent research by GNS, commissioned by the Council. There are still hundreds of people affected by both weather events living day to day on incredibly damaged land. The Council is consulting ratepayers over a proposed plan for fixing the broken Sounds transport network that will run into the hundreds of millions of dollars. Kathryn speaks with Council soil scientist Matt Oliver and Keneperu Sound farmer Emma Hopkinson.

Auckland's iconic landmarks Mount Eden, One Tree Hill, and Rangitoto are all evidence of the 360 km2 volcanic field that lies beneath our largest city. The field has erupted at least 53 times in the past 250,000 years, each time in a new location, resulting in many small hills and pits across the Auckland landscape. Volcanologists have been studying the magma source deep beneath the city to get clues to where the next eruption might occur. The chance of an eruption is very small but the consequences for residents would be large. GNS volcanologist Graham Leonard is co leader of the DEVORA programme which has been assessing the risk.

GNS scientists have mapped tens of thousands of landslides from the air, following Cyclone Gabrielle. Engineering Geologist, Kerry Leith, who was on board for the initial flyovers, says he's never seen such damage in the 20 years he has worked in the field. Leith says the flyover mainly looked for landslides that might continue to move or pose a risk to life or safety - particularly near housing or critical infrastructure. With the ground so saturated, he says many of the landslides are still moving and people should be aware of the risk. Leith says many of the landslides will slow their movement over the coming weeks, but the ground will remain weak for some years. Authorities will now be made aware of the most critical and high priority sites the scientists have seen. Over following weeks and months the landslides will be assessed in detail and formally mapped.
