Hello, kaiju lovers! Nate is joined by podcaster/YouTuber/filmmaker Adam Noyes to cover something a bit different this week: the original 1973 tokusatsu disaster film Submersion of Japan (aka Japan Sinks). Think of it as a kaiju film without a kaiju. It's based a novel by Sakyo Komatsu, who Adam describes as “the Japanese Michael Crichton.” The novel was a blockbuster, and this film was an even bigger hit. You can tell this was what Toho invested most of their money into and not Godzilla vs. Megalon that year. Adam and Nate discuss the film's better-than-Hollywood special effects, the horribly truncated and re-edited U.S. version called Tidal Wave made by Roger Corman, and the film's wrestling with Japanese national identity, among other things. Also, Nate's “pseudo-sister” magical girl superheroine clone, Jessica, meets him just before the broadcast to let him know she just moved back to Monster Island. He's…overjoyed. Japan sinks est un animé catastrophe qui est issu d'un roman. Alors pour moi, cet animé a de nombreuses qualités indéniables : le scénario est bien ficelé, l'histoire ne tombe pas dans les écueils et caricature et surtout il y a des messages de fond intéressant. Je n'aime pas le rap mais j'ai adoré le petit débat de rap sur la thématique de la mentalité japonaise. C'était marrant. Et le fait qu'il y a des morts mais qu'on ne s'attarde pas trop dessus et un point assez réaliste en période de grande catastrophe il me semble. Mais cet animé à deux points négatif : 1) le design caracter n'est pas ouf. Lors du dernier épisode j'ai eu l'impression d'un personnage a pris 500kg au moins … 2) l'opening qui n'est pas fou. The setting for this adaptation is moved from 1970s Japan to 2020, just after the Tokyo Olympics. The story centers on the Mutou family, and the siblings Ayumu and Gou. The four members of the Mutou family are caught in an earthquake that hits Tokyo, and attempt to escape the city, while disaster claws at their heels.
