In this episode, Phillip and Eric are breaking down the Denpa manga Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack - Beltorchika's Children by Uroaki Sabisi and Takayuki Yanase. They go real deep into the lore of the Gundam franchise, debate of whether a primarily adapted property works well in comics, and Eric makes fun of Phillip for spending money on Gundam toys.

The Men Who Created Gundam by Hideki Ohwada is a fictionalized version of the real story around the creation of Mobile Suit Gundam, the 1979 anime series that spawned a multi-billion dollar franchise that endures to this day. It's a gag manga that takes numerous creative liberties with real stories of the production history and key creatives (specifically, Yoshiyuki Tomino, Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, and Kunio Okawara), and exaggerates things for comedic effect. Of course, depending on your sense of humor, your mileage may vary. There are definitely some things in this book that are a bit questionable. We thought it would be worthwhile to cover this book, seeing as how we read the entirety of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko last year. Think of this as a sort of postscript to our Origin coverage! What would you do for fame and fortune? Susunu! Denpa Shonen provided contestants an opportunity to be seen by millions of viewers! All they had to do was escape a desert island without tools, bet on the winning baseball team to earn the right to eat food, and win enough sweepstakes prizes to convince producers to let them go home... sounds like torture to me. How real is reality tv? And when does it go too far? Let's explore a story about Tomoaki Hamatsu; an aspiring comedian wanted to make it big. He was thinking going on the game show Susunu! Denpa Shōnen would give him exposure. Instead he was essentially held captive and unknowingly live streamed for 15 months. Listen to the story to hear how it all unfolds! NOTE: This show was recorded before news of the passings of Kazuki Takahashi and Shinzo Abe. After three years since its last in-person event, Anime Expo had its grand return on the big stage, and to the surprise of few it's still as imperfect as ever with how the event is actually run and managed. Especially since it's in Los Angeles in JULY. Nevertheless, this means another extended deep dive at the happenings, goings-on, and announcements from AX 2022, of which there were quite a few that were, to sum up, BIG. In the second half of this two-part episode, days 2 and 3 (and even 4) of Anime Expo are discussed, including panels for two big upcoming series (and Bleach, too), why Tokyopop should always be avoided at all costs, some amusing anecdotes from Dark Horse, even MORE Macross coming soon, and the moment where everyone lost their minds - yeah, THAT moment. I just saw USMNT qualified for the World Cup (which exactly dates when I edited and wrote this), and if I were USWNT I would QRT that with something snide about how they're always there, and the men are just catching up. This episode, I have two special guests, Chris and Ink, with me to talk about three of Denpa's Shuzo Oshimi manga: Miss Kusakabe, Waltz, and Shino Can't Say Her Name. One of these days our convention report podcasts won't take months after the con is over to come out. Today is not that day. But hey, Anime NYC kept us waiting too! After a pandemic-imposed hiatus, Anime NYC returned in 2021 with its highest-ever attendance… and longest lines. Was the wait worth it… or was it just more waiting? Has Anime NYC grown too big for the Javits Center to handle? Was it even a good idea to congregate fifty thousand anime nerds together during a global pandemic? Was Anime NYC a super event… or just a superspreader event? Lum and VLord are joined by their usual gang of friends - Sakaki, Jecka, and Marion - to answer the call to all these questions and discuss the highs and lows of Anime NYC 2021!
Xavier, Ian and Dave cheat a little on an episode because the channel Atrocity Guide did 98% of the work for this one. Thank them for their work by checking out their channel below. In this video of theirs a very strange live stream is covered where a man is forced into isolation and can only have things that he wins in contests and sweepstakes. This includes food, entertainment, basically everything except water. We watch this horrifying story unfold with our lovely narrator and discuss the insanity that is "Life of Prizes". On this episode of Manga Mavericks, Colton & Lum once again tackle more news from the world of manga! We also discuss a lot of new manga from various publishers, including three new doujinshi from Irodori Comics' LGBTQ-focused imprint Irodori Sakura, as well as three new simulpubs! We start off with the manga adaptation of Japan Sinks 2020 exclusively on Mangamo, followed by Ghost Reaper Girl from Shonen Jump, and last but not least, Lockdown Zone: Level X from Denpa! It's a cool collection of new series that we were very excited to talk about and we hope you all check them out! Unfortunately, we also had to address the arrest of Tatsuya Matsuki, the writer of Act-Age, and the subsequent fallout, such as the cancellation of the series in Shonen Jump and everything else related to it. Our hearts go out to the victims of Matsuki's crimes, as well as Shiro Usazaki, whose artistic talent was responsible for bringing the world and characters of Act-Age to life, and we hope she is able to find more work and success in the future. It goes without saying that we here at Manga Mavericks will NOT be supporting or reviewing any of Matsuki's works in the future and will be dedicating a future episode to our frustrations with the sexist workplace culture at Shonen Jump that has unfortunately festered and harbored multiple predators. On this episode of Manga Mavericks, Colton & Lum finally get around to (at least some of) the news that has been building up over the past couple of months, including all of the licensing news from all the various publishers that were still announced despite the ongoing pandemic! Some of the biggest acquisitions including the return of series like Shaman King from Kodansha USA, as well as Slayers from J-Novel Club, both of which we were so excited about that we just HAD to pull in Vlord into to room for a bit to talk about! We also take a deep dive into the latest thoroughly researched analysis from Comics Beat, as well as report on some other unfortunate events happening in the general comics industry, including but not limited to the exposure of Warren Ellis. Truthfully, this episode became much more bloated then we initially planned for, which is why we will saving the rest of our news for next week, along with some thoughts on the latest simulpubs and even some titles from the newest line of Irodori Comics! To say times are rough would be an understatement. The pandemic has infected the anime and manga industry, affecting the production and release of several anime and manga titles. It has even taken down several once-though indomitable cons this year, including SDCC and Anime Expo. So, naturally, we’ve got to talk about all the stuff that’s either been delayed or outright canceled. Which is a real downer, man. Yet, even this pandemic can’t slow down the fast-paced world of manga, so we’ve got tons of serialization and licensing news to talk about as well. Plus, we’ve got some lighter fare including the likes of a list of manga people want to see animated, which includes a surprisingly goofy choice that I’m disappointed isn’t even Goofy-er! We’ve even thrown in a mini-review of the newest Jump series Moriking in the middle of this discussion too! So even though we’ve got some bummer news to talk about, hopefully, you’ll find this episode a humorous and hopeful romp through the latest goings-on in the always lively manga industry! WELP. This has sure been a thing. You see, the OSMcast has always been a "folks in person in front of a microphone" kind of podcast. With world events being what they are, that wasn't gonna fly anymore. So we decided to try something new. Recording via the Internet. Which is very exciting! So, we tested our recording with asking, receiving, and now answering questions from Listeners Like You! As well as some Moments of OSM. Hope you all enjoy!OSMnotesWe also want to give big props to our wondrous comrades in arms, Third Impact Anime! Not only are they an awesome podcast and blog in their own right, but they also host an outstanding Discord! Which everyone should join and talk anime and video games and other things with us. Also whenever Denpa puts out a book, just buy it! And as always, after the OSMnotes, are some Time Cues: We start the OSMcast!ing – 0:00General Gabbing - 0:35Moments of OSM – 3:06Animal Crossing: New Horizons - 3:16Behind the Curve; You Are Not So Smart - 9:42Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;surrection - 15:48Mobile Suit Gundam Wing / Not so Mobile Suit Gundam Tiger King – 17:30A Man and His Cat - 21:02Pleasure & Corruption – 22:33Questions and Answers - 24:51
We’re starting off this decade of the podcast by discussing a bunch of stuff we did last year! That’s right, it’s time to extensively cover all our adventures at the third convention we attended in 2019, Anime NYC! You’ve heard us go over all the news out of the con a few episodes ago, but this time around we’ll be going into what we personally did there - all the panels and events we attended, and all the people we met! It was a big con for us in many ways, and we got to hang out with a bunch of our friends that you’ll be hearing on this podcast, including Sakaki from the Weekly Shogakukan Edition twitter and blog, Jecka from the same blog, and Marion from Good Friends Anime Club, the Haikyuu podcast View from the Top, and an upcoming Dorohedoro podcast I’m excited to listen to! As you might have guessed, having five people on to discuss what they did at an incredibly busy event takes a while, which is how we’ve ended up with the 4+ hour long podcast you’re about to listen to. Believe it or not, this is but the first of a series of long podcasts we’re starting off 2020 with, as the Best of Manga 2019 episode we recorded also ended up being nearly five hours long, and we have several other incoming podcasts that have ran long besides. Suffice to say, one of our New Year’s Resolutions for Manga Mavericks this year is recording shorter podcasts, both for your listening convenience and our time and sanity! But let me ask you, are you a person who prefers long podcasts like this, or wants them shorter? Do you enjoy these convention report episodes, or are there types of episodes you’d like us to do more of instead? You can let us know all this and more by taking our annual Manga Mavericks podcast survey, which is currently live through February 1st! SURVEY LINK: https://s.surveyplanet.com/UpCz9Mfs This year we wanted to give our survey-takers a little treat as thanks for their feedback, so we’re running a giveaway contest that all survey-takers are automatically entered in. Just fill out our survey, and you could win a FREE volume of manga that we have on hand to give out! Besides the survey, if you want to support the show and help us keep doing what we’re doing, throw us some love over at the Manga Mavericks patreon. Supporting us on Patreon also gives you guys special rewards too! For example, you may have heard the interviews we recorded with Pokemon voice actresses Sarah Natochenny and Lisa Ortiz as well as Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino on our previous episode, where we included an abridged version of the interviews that included just the questions we asked. We’ll be uploading the full, unabridged interviews exclusively to our Patreon, so if you want to hear more questions and conversations with Sarah, Lisa, and Tomino pledge to us for just $5 or more for complete access to those as well as ten of our monthly bonus pods EXCLUSIVELY available on our Patreon! We also have full transcripts of our interviews with Sarah and Lisa written up on All-Comic.com for you to check out as well! PATREON LINK: https://www.patreon.com/mangamavericks There’s more to say, but I’ll let you listen to the rest in the podcast proper! And trust me, we have A LOT to talk about... Subscribers! Be sure to go to the blog to read the description easier & check out links for this episode! It's Thanksgiving time in North America, and what better way to celebrate than talking about a cult classic full of tears and despair?! That's right, returning guest and Fukumoto fan Tricia is back to talk with me all about Denpa's new English release of the infamous fan-favorite manga Gambling Apocalypse Kaiji! Started in the 90s, this title started growing a Western fanbase after it's '07 anime adaptation, and now at long last--a physical edition of the original manga is available! We talk about what we love about this new release, why it's worth picking up even if you've already seen the anime, and how a story with such a seemingly simple premise tackles some surprisingly heavy themes in unexpected ways. Also in this episode: what Kaiji adaptations are worth checking out, which Kaiji gambles terrify us, and why Michael Douglas is now officially Anime.Minor corrections/updates for this episode: The ebook company that did the original eBook release is actually a company close to Mr. Fukumoto! Also, the sound effect ZAWA wasn't quite invented by Fukumoto, but popularized by him. It's derived from the Japanese ZAWATSUKU or ZAWAMEKU. And while the bubble bursting in Japan & debt has a lot to do with the themes of the story, there's also the fact that Japan went through about 15-20 years of stagflation, which lead to many being disillusioned and feeling they had no future since many jobs available were just "dead end" ones. Denpa currently has two full-time staff members, and currently only has the rights to the first arc (13 vols) of Kaiji....though that may change in the future! The Women's World Cup is going on, which is about the only time I am openly supportive of US sports, because the women's national team is so good. And also the KFA blew it with some legitimate talent on their squad... This episode, we're talking about Kou Yaginuma's Twin Spica published by Vertical and Hiroyuki Asada's Pez published by Denpa. The song you heard at the top of the episode is "Feel so Moon" by UNICORN from the Space Brother anime. What a twist! As always, you can find me on Twitter @ImpassionateK, and my co-hosts Helen (@WanderinDreamr) and Apryll (@manjiorin) on Twitter at those places in the parenthesis. You can find both of their writing at The Organization of Anti-Social Geniuses, more of Helen's writing at Narrative Investigations, and my writing at the Fandom Post. This should have been the 6/20 episode, and now I'm all caught up on Manga In Your Ears episodes (for now). Listen Show notes: 0:48 - We talk about Twin Spica! 21:32 - We talk about Pez! Next time is My Brother's Husband and Kase-san!

We're talking this episode about Hiroyuki Asada's PEZ – a small, full-color manga with big heart, impact, and presentation – published and distributed in the USA by Denpa LLC. For something a little different, we are also excited to be able to talk with the Denpa's Ed Chavez! The interview is a lot longer than the review, but it does also touch on PEZ as well as the stateside manga publishing biz and other fun bits. Make to to lend your ears to all of it!

ANOTHER news-only episode?! What is this, 2016? Don't worry folks, we'll have series to cover and topics to discuss very soon! We've been listening to your feedback and we'll be implementing some changes that we think you'll be really happy with starting from the next episode onwards. We're committed to bringing on more guests and talking about more than shonen series, not just other manga, but discussion-forum episodes on important topics that deserve a thorough dialogue. We've got a lot of plans, and here's hoping we'll be able to follow through on some of them before the year's out! For now, it's just the two of us and the news, but it's quite a crop of news! We've got an MHA-dominated Bookscan list, new simulpubs at Crunchyroll, a Promised Neverland character popularity poll, and a whole lot more to cover! Originally this was just going to be a simple Interview with Ed Chavez and me about his connection to the Gurazeni manga. I always thought it was wild that I knew someone who had a manga very loosely based on their life. With the anime for the series on Crunchyroll, I was shocked that no one had interviewed Ed about such a fascinating story. So I convinced him to talk with me a little about his amazing connection to this manga. Then at Otakon, Ed made his big announcement about his new manga imprint Denpa and his initial selection of titles. We all knew Ed was working on some new project, but it was still a very pleasant surprise to discover the strength of the lineup. I asked Ed if we could broaden the interview to talk about this new company as well. So now that the insanity of Otakon is over, we finally got a chance to sit down and talk. The first half of the interview is a little history about the fascinating life of Ed Chavez in manga and professional baseball, and how it led to the main character of Gurazeni taking inspiration from his experiences and interests. The second half is an introduction to the philosophy and books of Denpa, LLC and what we can expect from their first set of titles. It then wraps up with an exciting bonus title announcement: Today's Menu for Emiya Family by TAa. If you have seen the anime from Ufotable you will know it is a heartwarming mixture of delicious food and good vibes with the cast of the original Fate/Stay Night. So sit back and listen to this in-depth interview with Ed and maybe pick up some of his new books on RightStuf.

Listen to the episode to find out how well Bakuman holds up 10 years after its debut! We also discuss our usual helping of news including My Hero Academia continuing to dominate half of North American manga sales, Gintama finally coming to an end, and even some new publishers making their way into the market!
