(Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep) يتغلب كيس ومولي على التدخلات القانونية السيبرانية ومحاولة خيانة من ريفيرا لدمج وينترميوت مع نيورومانسر، وينتهي الأمر بكيس يعيش في عالم جديد شجاعأفلام:·        Escape from New York (1981)[40][41]·        Burst City (1982)[42]·        Tron (1982)[43]·        Blade Runner (1982)[44]·        Brainstorm (1983)[45]·        Videodrome (1983)[46]·        Repo Man (1984)·        The Terminator (1984)·        Brazil (1985)·        RoboCop (1987)[47]·        The Running Man (1987)·        Gunhed (1989)[48]·        Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989)·        Circuitry Man (1990)[49]·        RoboCop 2 (1990)·        Hardware (a.k.a. We're talking Tsutomu Nihei's 15-volume manga Knights of Sidonia (2009-2015) with fan favorite returning guest star, Wren Collier. The three of us being heavily influenced by Nihei, we take a deep dive into the evolution of his storytelling and art styles and try to get inside the head of the man himself. What is Nihei horny for besides architecture? Where'd all the shadows go, Picasso? How do we keep from becoming NPCs? (maybe that one's on the bonus episode... speaking of, patreon.com/agitator). We're doing things a bit differently starting with this one. There's a ton of rich content about the artist and the art on the free show, talmbout a full episode's worth of the good shit. And then on Agitator Z, Wren joins us to dive even further into auteurs with normie influences, AI art, representing scale in world-running, Nihei's attempts at humor and character development, and how to save humanity (for real, this one gets heavy). Also: Halo.

Episode 195. This month we finished reading the sci-fi manga series Knights of Sidonia by Tsutomu Nihei. The scientists of Sidonia are continuing to experiment with human/gauna hybrids, but they're not all as successful as Tsumugi. Tanikaze's domestic life grows with new housemates and new romantic rivalries and tensions. The pilots try to distract themselves from ongoing battles with a popularity contest, but all their bonds are at stake when a member of the Sidonia's immortal crew has a disastrous new plan to try and save humanity. The Batwoman TV series is on the horizon, so Andrew, Mick and Rob thought it would be interesting to explore the character's rather strange history, and in order to do that we have to go back to the original Batwoman, which isn't the current Batwoman. It was mainly Andrew's idea. With a confusing cast of characters that includes the original Batwoman, Bat-girl, the current Batwoman, Batgirl (not a typo), Batman, Robin, the other Robin, Robin who used to be Batgirl, Superman, Superboy who grew up to be Superman, Bat-Mite, Ace the Bat-Hound, Krypto the Super-Dog, Supergirl, and Comet the Super-Horse (who is officially the worst), it's time to get a nice ball of string and head to the crazy wall. After sanity returns it's time for us to talk about the things we've been reading, which this week are Aliens: The Essential Comics Volume 1 (Outbreak, Nightmare Asylum and Earth War), Aliens: Dust To Dust, Mind MGMT by Matt Kindt, the second volume of Aposimz by Tsutomu Nihei, and X-Men: Black. This week's manga log: Blame!, written and illustrated by Tsutomu Nihei.   Description (courtesy of MyAnimeList.net): Killy is a man of few words. He wanders, seemingly endlessly, through a lonely, gargantuan labyrinth of concrete and steel, fighting off cyborgs and other futuristic nightmares, searching only for something called Net Terminal Genes. And he has a very powerful gun, which he uses without hesitation whenever anything resembling danger rears its ugly head. Who is this quiet, violent, determined man and what are these Genes he seeks? The small communities he finds tucked into the crevices of this towering, dystopic ruin hardly give him leads on his treasure, driving him to find larger enclaves of civilization where people can reveal more about the world he lives in and the quarry he seeks. SEELEN LABEL MIX By NARCISS Despite naming himself after a mythical egomaniac, Narciss’ approach to Techno is very far from self-centered, with his inspirations reaching from the cosmic horror of H.P. Lovecraft’s writing, across the jagged dystopian landscapes of Tsutomu Nihei, to the 90’s tool techno whitelabel-records he fell in love with in his teen years. Undeterred by the tonal difference in these influences though, the glue holding all of them together is an earnest sense of urbanity and Narciss’ audible wish to make a crowd move as ecstatically as possible. FB : https://www.facebook.com/itsnarciss/ SC : https://soundcloud.com/itsnarciss |SEELEN| Punk is a music genre that developed in the mid-1970s widely known through it’s production style of fast-paced songs, with hard-edged melodies and stripped-down instrumentation paired with an embrace of DIY-culture and the rejection of established rules. SEELEN. is an independent Techno record label founded in 2018 by JANEIN and Stigmatique, that is based out of Leipzig, Germany. While at first glance these might not have a lot in common, upon closer inspection you begin to notice, clear as day, there is a distinctly punk mentality in the labels modus operandi. From their cover artworks, that have more in common with a record-stores Death Metal section, to the fact that the label is completely self-distributed to avoid the industry machinery that crushes the spirits of many trying to go through it. SEELEN.'s musical foundation can no doubt be found in this mentality as well. Formed around a tightly knit crew of artists sharing a single vision, it has sharp corners, an often eye-melting tempo and bleeds from every pore with ecstatic raving madness. Utilizing this, the label exploded onto the scene with two 12” compilations that garnered enormous support from audiences and industry heavy weights alike and also led to them being noticed by Leipzig’s reveled club Institut für Zukunft which has now become their homebase. If reading all this has not convinced you yet however, then that’s fine though. Because SEELEN. is not trying to win you over. SEELEN. comes from the hearts of the people who form it. It is a rejection of the mainstream. SEELEN. is Punk. INFO & BOOKING info@seelen-records.com www.seelen-records.com/?menu=start

Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 01:19:12 - Wrap up 01:20:08 - Contact us It's the final manga episode of the year, and to close out 2016 Shea and Derek discuss a couple of fascinating new editions of older manga. But first they talk about their holiday activities with one another and then go on to share the listener mail they received about their November manga episode. After that, it's manga time! They begin with Junji Ito's Tomie: Complete Deluxe Edition (VIZ Media). This volume brings together all of the previous Tomie stories, initially released in three separate books. As listeners of the podcast may know, Shea and Derek are big fans of Junji Ito, but this is the first time either of the guys have read this series. They point out both the similarities and the differences between this text (especially the early stories) and later Ito works such as Uzumaki and Gyo. Shea is particularly taken by Ito's early, looser illustration style, while Derek focuses on the, at times, goofy scenarios surrounding Tomie. They're weirder than even the most unusual premises you'll find in Junji Ito. After that, the guys turn to Tsutomu Nihei's Blame! This series has also been previously published, but now Vertical Comics is releasing it in new master editions. The second volume was just published this month, and volume 3 is due out in March. So Shea and Derek limit their discussion to the story contained within these first two book. This is an action-heavy manga, and while this kind of graphic storytelling isn't one of Derek's favorites, it's something that Shea absolutely loves. But both guys appreciate the incremental world building and especially Nihei's astounding ability in representing The City, the vast post-apocalyptic landscape in which the story takes place. The bottom line is that both guys love the storyworld and plan to continue reading this series.

Book Club for Masochists: a Readers’ Advisory Podcast

In this episode we discuss Space Opera and all the endless tangents. This is a LONG conversation (we almost split it in two, but we’re trying to catch up episodes to our current reading topic). We talk about losing our solid footing on genre definitions, defining the term “worldbuilding”, when re-reading books from your youth goes horribly wrong, wondering just what is up with those TV and movie tie-ins, misogyny infecting Sci-Fi classics (Oh, hello there Sad Puppies), the delight of scientists reading Sci-Fi, and so much more. Your Hosts This Episode Anna Ferri | Meghan Whyte | Matthew Murray | Amanda Wanner Space Opera We Read (or kinda): Recommended Retribution Falls by Chris Wooding (lukewarm recommendation by a reader who is deeply ambivalent about anything speculative, Sci-Fi, or Fantasy in nature) Rendezvous with Rama by Arthur C. Clarke (not spectacular but a slow-burn, exploratory read) Diving into the Wreck by Kristine Kathryn Rusch (difficult to like narrator warning) Ancillary Mercy (and the entire Ancillary Justice series) (HIGHLY recommended series) Accessing the Future: A Disability-Themed Anthology of Speculative Fiction edited by Kathryn Allan Lightless by C.A. Higgins Read Sassinak by Anne McCaffrey and Elizabeth Moon Knights of Sidonia, Vol. 1 by Tsutomu Nihei, translated by Kumar Sivasubramanian Space Opera edited by Brian W. Aldiss (Features stories from 1900 (!) - 1972. Most are from the 1950s) More Adventures on Other Planets edited by Donald A. Wollheim Stitching Snow by R. C. Lewis (Not so much Space Opera and not enough girl mechanic) The Year’s Best Military SF & Space Opera 2015 edited by David Afsharirad Did Not Finish Armada by Ernest Cline (read this Wikipedia article about a video game urban legend instead) Red Rising by Pierce Brown Use of Weapons by Iain M. Banks (would try another one by this author) The Star Dancers by Spider Robinson and Jeanne Robinson The Sheriff of Yrnameer by Michael Rubens  A Deepness in the Sky by Vernor Vinge (so long - for 900+ pages, would prefer to try the better known A Fire Upon the Deep, which was recommended by another group member) The Warrior’s Apprentice by Lois McMaster Bujold (recommended to us - ran out of time this month; try it as an audiobook?) Koko the Mighty by Kieran Shea (really enjoyed Koko Takes a Holiday) Other titles and media mentioned Mass Effect video games are totally Space Opera, especially if you read all the internal game encyclopedia entries like Matthew. The Mote in God’s Eye by Larry Niven, and Jerry Pournelle The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin (not exactly Space Opera but totally recommended) Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein - Military Sci-Fi or Space Opera?? Space Opera by Jack Vance - An opera troupe in Space Red Spider White Web by Misha Nogha The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams (Have you not read this yet? It’s short - go read it!) District 9 movie Firefly TV series & Serenity movie & the Firefly comics (pretty much all recommended highly) Please skip Sassinak and read Elizabeth Moon’s excellent connected series set in the world of Paksenarrion (Fantasy not Sci-Fi), or at least read the three books of The Deed of Paksenarrion. All those zillion Pern books (Science Fantasy series) by Anne McCaffrey Dune by Frank Herbert (hefty but worth a read - recommended) The Martian by Andy Weir (about space but not Space Opera and definitely recommended) Transformers: More than Meets the Eye, Vol. 1 (comic book series) (recommended even if you don't care about Transformers. Really! ) Ascension (Tangled Axon, #1) by Jacqueline Koyanagi (Meghan mis-spoke and called this book “Ascendent”) After Man by Dougal Dixon (so cool!) Octavia’s Brood edited by Walidah Imarisha, and Adrienne Maree Brown Samuel Delaney  - We discuss Dhalgren which is not space focused, but Delaney has a few space books to try. Illuminae by Amie Kaufman, and Jay Kristoff (YA Space Opera - read before the month, recommended) A Confusion of Princes by Garth Nix (read after the episode, recommended) Links etc. OK Go Upside Down & Inside Out (music video shot in zero gravity) The review of Ancillary Justice Anna tried to read without being spoiled for the book The Wikipedia article on Space Opera bring up many aspects of the definition we discussed and is worth a skim, at least. Scientists read sci-fi and have opinions about it Read some stuff (here, here, and here are a few to start with) about Sad Puppies if you care about issues of diversity in publishing, book awards, and media more generally. Check it out: Afro futurism Book Riot sympathises with Sci-Fi fans Xenoanthropology Questions What (the heck) is space opera? (We thought we knew! We were so naive.) What is Worldbuilding? Any suggestions of your favourite instances of worldbuilding? Is bug punk real? Who else wants a “Ten Rules to Break When Dating a Space Pirate” from Sarah MacLean? Are Star Trek tie-in novels Space Opera? What’s the relationship between Space Opera/space-based Sci-Fi and the history of Colonialism? Class Z(ed): Matthew fills us in on the world of zines - what they are, the vast diversity in their style and content, how they're made/traded/sold/shared, and the way they empower their creators and consumers (who are very often one and the same). Plus, we talk zines about librarians, zines in traditional libraries, and homegrown libraries of zines.
