Grammy-nominated songwriter Tony Arata sits down with Kerry and Lisa for another Music Legends Series special. The soulful storyteller breaks down the story and history behind his Garth Brooks hit, "The Dance," which won ACM Song of the Year in 1991. Tony also shares his thoughts on co-writing, the art behind crafting the perfect song, and his secondary passion for baseball.
This week we say goodbye to Miyo and the gang until the season 3 specials. In real life Joe is cat sitting for his GF and learns the dangers of letting a cat physically sit on you. Meanwhile, Sarah has been hanging out and watching some horror movies. Then we talk about American animation studios for a solid ten minutes, as one does. Then we finish off My Happy Marriage, we wrap up the Naoshi arc rather easily as Arata remembers that he's a good guy actually and Miyo and Naoshi try to change each other's minds. Then in the finale, Kiyoka and Miyo set their affairs in order so they can retire to a nice quiet life with each other. Next time, we watch Revolutionary Girl Utena, which you can watch here.
This week we finish Chihayafuru! Not much has happened since last recording in the real world. Joe finds out that he doesn't need to upgrade his computer to windows 10 and Sarah stubs her toe real bad (and sends Joe a picture of it mid recording, look forward to that). In Chihayafuru, we end with two solid episodes and one out of place one. It's character drama time and we take the last few moments of the series to work out our feelings for each other over the course of Valentine's day. Then, we end with Arata doing some truly season 1 style stuff like starting his own karuta club. He's finally catching up. This show ends in kind of a weird place, but we have a good time talking through it.Next time we watch My Happy Marriage episodes 1-3!
We finally get some romance this time! In our real lives, Sarah has been considering a car purchase while Joe made a big purchase, a Steam Deck. Then we talk about video games as one does. In Chihayafuru, we ramp up for the Arata v Harada match. Wow, what a mouth full. Then we get some quality time with Master Suo. Our opinion on him might change a bit. Then the boys get to make some romantic progress! Things are really heating up now!
Our best boy is stuck on the sidelines this week. In our real lives, Sarah is deciding which car to buy so she can get back out on the open road, while Joe goes to a concert, a rare occurrence for him! In Chihayafuru, we see if any main character can make it to the challengers final. Which is to say, Arata needs to pull through or this season is a wash. Come on Arata! You're finally in the show! Make us proud!
“We can be broke anywhere, so why not Nashville?” were the fateful words from Tony's wife Jamyi some 40 years ago.Once packed up from Thunderbolt, Georgia it didn't take long for the aspiring singer/songwriter (and UPS worker) tohave a chance run-in with Garth Brooks. Tony explains the quirky inspiration for writing “The Dance,” which is amonghis four #1 country chart toppers and Brook's admitted signature song. Dolly, Reba, Emmylou, Trisha, Patty Loveless andLainey Wilson have all recorded his songs. Not bad for a journalism major. AMONG THE TOPICS: WHY YOU CAN'T PICKAND CHOOSE YOUR MEMORIES, DISCOVERING THERE ARE TWO NINE O'CLOCKS, A 1967 OPEL KADET, AND WHY ATEENAGE SUMMER GAVE HIM KEYS TO THE KINGDOM.

Dubbed the Meme Queen of Depression by Mashable, Aiden Arata's real goal on Instagram was to build a big enough following to convince traditional publishers to let her write a book. Thus her new collection of essays, You Have a New Memory, in which Arata reveals the chillingly empty realities about her millennial "Doom" generation's relationship with social media. There really isn't much of an influencer economy, Arata confesses, acknowledging that most social media "stars" are, in fact, grifters. So the only way to monetize one's influencer status is by writing a traditional book which, Arata argues, also offers a refuge from what she calls the "flattened" language of digital media. 1. Arata Became an Influencer to Enable Her Real Dream"I think that I created an internet following to trick people into letting me write a book. I've always wanted to write a book... I've always been a writer."Arata reveals her Instagram success was strategic - a means to literary credibility rather than an end goal.2. Social Media Has "AI'd" Us Before AI Arrived"I think it's interesting because just sort of the way that algorithms train us to use certain language... we kind of have AI'd ourselves by mimicking certain phrases and just flattening... the field of interpretation for words."She argues we've already been conditioned to communicate like machines, making actual AI less of a leap.3. Digital Content Creates an Existential Crisis"I call it plastic bag theory. And it's this idea that... the internet is like a plastic bag, it's disposable, but it's also forever. It's sort of on its trash island swirling out there somewhere. And then when we use the internet, we kind of become that as well."Her metaphor captures how online content - and creators - exist in a liminal state between temporary and permanent.4. The "Doom Generation" Faces Unprecedented Awareness"We've never been so aware of all of the atrocities that happen around us and to us. And we've sort of also never been so aware of our own powerlessness to affect change."She explains why her generation feels particularly anxious about the future.5. Books Offer Refuge from Digital Language Flattening"A book is a really beautiful response to that. It's reclaiming language as something that can go on these sort of philosophical eddies and can have a metaphor that's a little bit complicated... that is like just perfect in its weird slanty little way."Despite her digital success, she sees traditional publishing as essential for preserving nuanced human expression.Keen On America is a reader-supported publication. We've done it! Two seasons down, one to go. Join us for the season 2 finale of Chihayafuru! In our real lives, Joe is enrolling in the wrong language classes while Sarah is mourning the end of a notably non-romantic season of Love Island. In Chihayafuru, Mizusawa cleans up the individual tournament, Taichi finally ranks up, and Shinobu takes a rare L. Oh and also we learn that maybe Arata is thinking about Chihaya constantly. Like all the time. And maybe she's in love with him too. Hm, things are looking pretty bad in the Taichi corner of this love triangle, but hey, there's always season three for him to make a comeback!
Join Theo and Doc as they go on a side gig to get revenge on Arata.
We're back this week after taking a week off from last week. Instead we had our JP3 coverage so I hope you enjoyed that! Irl, Joe was spending time with his dad and Sarah was at a con!In Chihayafuru, we get one, solitary episode where we just hangout with characters and then it's right back into tournament mode. We play against some international students and then we get some Arata time! Finally! He's here!!
We get back to the mat this week with Chihayafuru S2. Second season is here! IRL, Joe is playing Kotor II and Sarah had fun times with her coworkers. We start off season 2 with two no characters, ones an icon and the other we both dislike. Can you guess which is which? As for the rest of the characters we pick off basically where they ended last season, Taichi is sad boy, Chihaya is clueless, and the rest are also there. Here's hoping Arata gets to do something soon!
Every year in Japan, thousands of people disappear voluntarily to start a new life. 'Johatsu' means to evaporate or evaporating. Berlin-based filmmakers Andreas Hartmann and Arata mori made a documentary together to explore the phenomenon of “evaporating people" in Japan. - 日本で行方が分からなくなる人は年間約9万人(2023年)。その中には自発的に行方をくらまし、人生の再スタートを切る蒸発者も多くいます。その蒸発を追ったドキュメンタリーが、日本では上映しないことを条件に完成しました。今週からシドニーの映画祭で上映されます。
We're back and its time for some Karuta! In the real world, we went to an anime convention together! In skip beat cosplay! It was fun! Check out our Instagram for some pictures (hopefully we have them soon). In Chihayafuru, Taichi has one last shot to make class A. Can he do it or will Arata torpedo his run by outclassing him? Also can Chihaya pass or tests? Then we go back to a tournament, where Chihaya is playing a literal child then a literal office worker. We ask questions like, is anyone in this show actually friends? Do we know what friendship actually is? Is Joe just watching this show wrong? Answers and more on this episode.
This week we are together in person (apologies for any mic weirdness). We run down our 2024 year and think of some goals for 2025! Surely, it'll be a good year, no reason to be pessimistic or depressed about it.....In Chihayafuru, we move onto the individual stages. We learn who that weird girl was from a few episodes ago (spoiler, she's weirder in person) and Taichi feels he'll never catch up to Chihaya or Arata. Then we get a recap episode which we gloss through. Happy New Year ShouJoe listeners!
Happy Holidays to all our lovely listeners! We have a not so festive episode this week. Joe's got the Flu and Sarah has been busy with things but we manage to spend a lot of time talking about random stuff anyway. In Chihayafuru, we finish up the regional tournament and jump right into nationals. Chihaya's family troubles are resolved, Kana recites a poem, and Arata and his big hands finally re-enters the story.
Fear the Wave Director Michael Arata joined Isaac Popper & John Burrows on Inside the Wave to discuss working with Tulane Football players on new NIL agreements. Michael highlighted Jon Sumrall's commitment and his ongoing support. Then, he recapped the "crazy week" of players wanting to "run it back" and teased some future agreements. Throughout the episode, Michael gave some insight into the types of players that Tulane will get in the portal, what they are like on and off the field. Get Inside the Wave.
This week we rekindle an old friendship and make a new one! But first, Joe and Sarah catch up on their favorite sidekick Robin iteration, the ACOTAR book series and more.In Chihayafuru, Chihaya and Taichi go to visit Arata. He says he's given up Karuta, but like, he's not serious is he? No way. It was probably just a misunderstanding. This couldn't possibly be linked to a tragic event. Never. Then we recruit our first member to the Karuta club. It turns out history and poetry is cool. Go learn some history everyone!Recommendations:Sarah -> Joe: Choice of GamesJoe -> Sarah: Harpy Gee

Sunspot Jonz fka BFAP is one half of Mystik Journeymen and a founding member of Living Legends. Growing up in East Oakland, he fell in love with music early but didn't identify with gangsta rap trends. This led Sunspot to find like-minded artists in the underground hip-hop scene, like his partner Luckyiam fka PSC, who joined Mystik Journeymen. Frustrated with the mainstream music industry, they pressed their own tapes and CDs, created their own magazine, and threw their own shows, including the Broke Ass Summer Jam. After traveling the world independently, the Journeymen became founders of the Living Legends crew along with Grouch, Murs, Eligh, Arata, Scarub, Bicasso, and Aesop. Since then, the Legends have sold millions of units and continue independently touring around the world. -- Sponsored by Stem Social https://stemsocial.io IG: https://instagram.com/stem.social -- For promo opportunities on the podcast, e-mail: historyofthebaypodcast@gmail.com -- Produced by DEO @deo415, videography by @mvp_kingced --- History of the Bay Spotify Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3ZUM4rCv6xfNbvB4r8TVWU?si=9218659b5f4b43aa Online Store: https://dregsone.myshopify.com Follow Dregs One: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1UNuCcJlRb8ImMc5haZHXF?si=poJT0BYUS-qCfpEzAX7mlA Instagram: https://instagram.com/dregs_one TikTok: https://tiktok.com/@dregs_one Twitter: https://twitter.com/dregs_one Facebook: https://facebook.com/dregsone415 --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/historyofthebay/support
