This week, a story from our neighbors at North Country Public Radio. If All Else Fails is a recent podcast about the growing presence — and threat — of far-right extremism in northern New York, and the voters and local law enforcement that are engaging with the movement there. You can learn more about the series here. That's also where you can find photos from NCPR's reporting, and listen to the rest of the series.Heads up: The show contains some harsh language and some listeners might find certain parts of this episode disturbing. This episode was reported by Emily Russell and Zach Hirsch for North Country Public Radio, with grant support from Grist and the Center for Rural Strategies. A big thanks to NCPR for letting us share their show here. The Brave Little State team is Josh Crane, Burgess Brown and Sabine Poux. Angela Evancie is Brave Little State's Executive Producer. (Jan 29, 2024) People have downloaded NCPR's podcast about far-right extremism in the North Country about 75,000 times so far. A conversation with hosts Emily Russell and Zach Hirsch about what they found and questions they still have. Also: The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe has reached a settlement with Monsanto over toxic chemicals that were dumped near Akwesasne in the 1970s.
Driving around rural areas of the Northeast, it's not uncommon to see an occasional home or vehicle displaying a Confederate battle flag. Look closer, and you might find symbols of far right groups like the Proud Boys or the Three Percenters, both classified as hate groups.Reporters Emily Russell and Zach Hirsch decided to dig further. They spent months investigating the reach of the far right movement in rural upstate New York. They found law enforcement officers who are members of the extremist “constitutional sheriffs” movement who vow that they will not enforce state laws with which they disagree. These include laws relating to gun rights and public health. And they found a man who went to prison for participating in the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol and anticipates a military takeover during the 2024 election and a third world war.Russell and Hirsch also crisscrossed the district represented by Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-NY. Stefanik has amplified far right views, such as the white supremacist Great Replacement Theory and the false claim that the 2020 election was stolen. Stefanik is frequently mentioned as a potential vice presidential running mate for Donald Trump in the 2024 election. This investigation into the far right extremist movement in upstate New York is the subject of a remarkable five-part podcast from North Country Public Radio called “If All Else Fails,” which is hosted by Russell and Hirsch. This Vermont Conversation includes the first episode of If All Else Fails, broadcast by permission of North Country Public Radio, followed by a conversation with reporters Emily Russell and Zach Hirsch.“As we saw on Jan. 6, it only took a couple thousand people to suspend our democratic process for hours and force an evacuation from the Capitol,” Russell told the Vermont Conversation.“Even if folks who have gone down these rabbit holes may be a minority in this country, if you get enough of them riled up, they can do a tremendous amount of damage to our democracy in the U.S.,” Russell said.
(Jan 16, 2024) Episode one of our new podcast, If All Else Fails. Emily Russell and Zach Hirsch dive into the ecosystem of far-right extremism in Upstate New York and how concerned domestic anti-terrorism officials are about it.
In 2022, the sheriff of Lewis County, New York, changed his Facebook profile to a picture of him holding up an award he won from the Oath Keepers. The post was after Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes was arrested and charged for his role in the January 6 insurrection. This got North Country Public Radio reporters Emily Russell and Zach Hirsch interested in learning more about the far-right movement upstate. What they found out is the subject of the podcast, If All Else Fails, and the first episode is out now. Hirsch and Russell join us to discuss.
(Jan 12, 2024) On this week's North Words, Mitch features a conversation between news director, David Sommerstein, and podcast hosts Emily Russell and Zach Hirsch.

A Heavyweight contender showdown to close out the Matchroom Boxing “Fight Camp” in England is featured prominently on this week’s edition of the Big Fight Weekend podcast. Host, T. J. Rives his back with his guests to get insight on all the action that will be taking place on the back lawn of Matchroom HQ in suburban London, as well as, the “PBC on Fox” show in Los Angeles and the ESPN Top Rank Boxing fight card to take place in the Las Vegas “bubble” also on Saturday. T.J.’s joined first by his colleague live from England, David Payne. David runs his own website www.boxingwriter.co.uk and has great inside of historical perspective on the sport. T.J. and David talk about the upcoming main event Heavyweight showdown between WBC number one contender, England’s Dillian Whyte (above) and former Russian IBF World Heavyweight champion, Alexander Povetkin. The winner of this fight is very much back in the Heavyweight championship picture particularly for a shot potentially in 2021 against WBC champ, Tyson Fury. Up next on the podcast is a fun segment with predictions, involving a “whiz kid” from South Florida who has a knack for picking games and fights, correctly. Zach Hirsch known as, “Mystic Zach” jumps on the show from IPickWins.com. Zach’s father is a prominent former boxing promoter and manager of fighters and he has been around the sport is entire upbringing. Zach will give his prediction on what will happen with White – Povetkin for Saturday. The podcast closes with Marquis Johns, senior writer for BigFightWeekend.com, jumping aboard for his comments and prediction on the White-Povetkin main event in England. Marquis is also intrigued by the co-feature fight, which has women’s Undisputed Lightweight Champion, unbeaten Katie Taylor of Ireland, in a rematch against Delphine Persoon. Taylor and Persoon fought a close fight at Madison Square Garden last June one by Taylor. Marquis also weighs in on the Premier Boxing Champions Card on Fox Saturday night where “Showtime” Shawn Porter, former WBC World Welterweight champion of the world, will take on little-known, but unbeaten German, Sebastian Formella, in the main event. Marquis is also intrigued by a couple of fights on the undercard in Los Angeles.
