The term neurodiversity is everywhere these days, but what does it mean? What does it include? Could it just be that you just have a "quirky kid"? About 20% of the population is thought to be neurodivergent. Common diagnoses that are under neurodiversity are autism and ADHD. Kids who have learning disabilities or who are gifted or gender fluid also are under this umbrella. To help teach us about this, our guest is my good friend Josie Bohling, LMFT (that means licensed marriage and family therapist). She treats not only teens, but also families to help families work together with these diagnoses. We will cover:-When to suspect that your child may have neurodivergence?-What to do if you suspect a diagnosis?-What resources are at your disposal?-What does this mean for your child and your family?More about Josie Bohling here!https://www.shadetreefamilycounseling.com/References Josie loves!Websites:Childmind.orgUnderstood.orgAdditudemag.comPodcast:Tilt Parenting- great for parenting neurodiversity and community- also has a website that has tons of resources for parents.Neurodiversitypodcast- great for learning how to advocate for your kid in the education system , as well as deep dives into neurodiversity presentations.Books:What Your ADHD Child Wishes You Knew: Working Together to Empower Kids for Success in School and Life by Dr. Sharon SalineGirls Growing Up on the Autism Spectrum: What Parents and Professionals Should Know About the Pre-teen and Teenage Years by Shana NicholsThe Dyslexia Advantage-Brock Eide/ Frenette EideDr. Ross Green - any of his books will help with parenting with kids who struggle with emotion dysregulation and forming expectations that meet where your kid is at developmentally.

On Episode 249, Emily Kircher-Morris chats with Diane Dempster and Elaine Taylor-Klaus from Impact Parents, hosts of the Parenting with Impact podcast. They talk about the challenge of motivating neurodivergent kids, and break down why it's challenging. The chat includes a framework called PINCH, a way to remember and think about important elements of motivation. You'll come away with practical strategies for parents to foster a supportive environment that encourages engagement, and ways to move away from fear and stress as motivators. Takeaways Traditional parenting advice often doesn't apply to neurodivergent kids. Motivation can be misunderstood; it's not always lack of interest. Executive functioning skills play a crucial role in motivation. Dopamine is essential for engaging in non-preferred tasks. Fear-based parenting creates stress and is not sustainable. Intrinsic motivation develops later in life, especially for neurodivergent individuals. The PINCH framework helps identify different motivators for kids. Interest in a subject can significantly boost motivation. Competition can motivate but may also cause anxiety in some children. Collaboration and connection with peers can enhance motivation. Parents should experiment with different motivational strategies. Transparency and vulnerability in parenting can build trust. Elaine Taylor-Klaus and Diane Dempster co-founded ImpactParents.com in 2011 because traditional parenting advice wasn't working for their complex kids and they found no training or coaching available designed specifically to support them as parents of complex kids. Internationally recognized as leading parent educators, they use a coach-approach to help parents reduce the stress of raising children, teens, and young adults with ADHD, Anxiety, Autism, LD and more. They're the creators of Sanity School® behavior training, and the authors of many books including Parenting ADHD Now: Easy Intervention Strategies to Empower Kids with ADHD and The Essential Guide to Raising Complex Kids with ADHD, Anxiety and More. You may have heard about the “lost generation of autistic women,” which refers to those women whose diagnoses were missed when they were younger because of the male gender bias in the diagnostic criteria. But that phenomenon doesn't just apply to autism – the same thing goes for girls and ADHD. There's actually been a lot written about this in recent years, including a popular 2020 article in The Guardian called The Lost Girls: Chaotic and Curious, Women with ADHD All Have Missed Red Flags That Haunt Us. It's true that the stereotype of a kid with ADHD is that energetic, impulsive, disorganized boy. But in girls especially it can also look like perfectionism and having a hard time receiving feedback, forgetfulness, misreading social cues and struggling with friendships, drifting off, and inconsistency in schoolwork. In this episode, you'll hear about why ADHD in girls often goes undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, what kind of ineffective coping strategies girls with ADHD may to hide their struggles, and what some of the early symptoms are and how to recognize them. We also talked about the challenges of how rejection sensitive dysphoria, which co-occurs in many people with ADHD, may impact girls, and ADHD burnout. About Dr. Sharon Saline Sharon Saline, Psy.D., clinical psychologist and author of the award-winning book, What Your ADHD Child Wishes You Knew: Working Together to Empower Kids for Success in School and Life and The ADHD solution card deck specializes in working with children, teens, adults and families living with ADHD, learning disabilities, twice exceptionality and mental health issues. Training in martial arts like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), Judo, wrestling, & Muay Thai is my outlet for improving my mental health and becoming a better person. Shop our apparel line made for the Jiu-Jitsu athlete at https://jiujitsuoutlet.com/ On the 84th episode of the Jiu-Jitsu Outlet show, I talk to former MMA fighter and wrestler Roy Koyama about the work he is doing to make wrestling more accessible to the next generation. Roy first fell in love with the martial arts after training with the Machado brothers back in the early days of the UFC and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu first arriving in the USA. Eventually making his way into mixed martial arts (MMA), Roy fought in the cage to test himself and improve as a martial artist. Later in life, Roy would return to martial arts as a way to help his sons in their maturity. In this episode, we talk about how wrestling helped Roy and his sons improve their mental health and life off the mats. We discuss what combat sports like wrestling can do to help young kids develop into amazing adults. Roy also shares about the non-profit he recently started to help make wrestling more accessible to kids around the world - starting in his home of Springfield Missouri. Want to compete in the Route 66 Folkstyle National wrestling tournament that Roy is organizing on October 22nd, 2023? The esteemed Hall of Fame ADHD Podcast Guest and dear friend Dr. Sharon Saline graces the show once again! This week: why is it hard for ADHDers to be authentic joiners? Sharon offers her wisdom on the value of community in managing ADHD, addressing the fears and hesitations that can often prevent individuals from seeking out communal ties. One of the main topics we discuss is avoidance behaviors towards community engagement. There are myriad reasons why a person might be reluctant to participate in group settings, such as social anxiety, previous negative experiences, Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD), fear of the unknown, and confusion about how to navigate new situations. Dr. Saline emphasizes the potential impacts of such isolating behaviors on a person's physical, mental, and social well-being. She also highlights the importance of fostering relationships, regardless of their novelty, and addresses the common misconception that having a few friends who may not fully understand an individual's experiences is sufficient. How do we approach overcoming the avoidance of community engagement? Dr. Saline provides practical advice for those who seek the connection a community offers but are held back by their fears. She discusses the potential benefits of therapy or professional healthcare consultations to better understand and manage these fears. She also provides strategies to combat the paralysis often brought on by the fear of RSD and the "what if" scenarios that can hinder one from entering new group situations. Her advice to those who've had negative group interactions in the past is particularly powerful, urging them not to let past experiences define their future opportunities.Links & NotesLearn more about Dr. Saline on her site, https://drsharonsaline.com, and make sure to pick up a copy of her fantastic book, "What Your ADHD Child Wishes You Knew: Working Together to Empower Kids for Success in School and Life”— it's fantastic! Special thanks to TextExpander for sponsoring this week's show. We've talked about parenting with her. We've talked about therapy and ADHD. She specializes in working with neurodiverse children, teens, young adults, and families and aims to help outside-the-box thinkers improve executive functioning and social-emotional skills while also building practical communication tools and self-esteem.Sharon says that she, herself, is a perfectionist in recovery, and she offers key insights into perfectionism and its impact on ADHD. How does perfectionism drive self-compassion down? How can you use "just one thing" to turn what seems to be impossible into a daily practice? How do you avoid compare-and-despair? So, the take-home message surrounding Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is that it is a disorder that affects a child's ability to focus and/or his, her, or their ability to manage energy and impulses. BUT.... that is not all that it impacts. A child who cannot focus well or manage energy or impulses well has a difficult time learning, participating in activities, mastering activities, developing friendships, and ultimately forming an identity. These children do not have the art, sports, grades, music, clubs, or activities that help them identify who they are. At the same time, some of the most accepting kids in school are those who are engaging in the at-risk behaviors where we would not want our kids joining in. Emotions are a tricky thing. They can be beautiful and powerful … but not always rational. When they become intense or come on too strong, they are hard to handle. When they're always intense, it can feel intolerable! DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) -- which is different from traditional talk therapy and more targeted than CBT (Cognitive Behavior Therapy) -- can teach complex kids how to handle intense emotions so they don't always feel so overwhelmed. Dr. Vay is the director of the DBT program at Peachtree Comprehensive Health (Peachtree DBT) in Atlanta, GA. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Professional Counselor Supervisor. Dr. Vay is the President of the DBT-Linehan Board of Certification™ and a DBT Linehan Board of Certification, Certified Clinician ™. Prior to working in the outpatient setting, Dr. Vay has worked in a residential setting applying DBT to adolescents at the residential level of care. While working in the residential facility, Dr. Vay lead the team in becoming the first residential treatment center to become a DBT-Linehan Board of Certification, Certified Program. She is also one of the official Site Reviewers for future programs seeking certification through DBT-Linehan Board of Certification. Dr. Vay has also received intensive training in Radically Open DBT(RO-DBT), Prolonged Exposure-DBT for trauma (DBT-PE), DBT-PTSD, DBT protocol adapted for children (DBT-C) as well as Level One and Two of Theraplay® and Group Theraplay®. Dr. Vay also supervises other clinicians and provides DBT consultation to other DBT clinicians who are either seeking certification or just wish to enhance their adherence to the treatment model. How can we equip our kids to maintain conservative values? Today's guest, Dr. Trent Talbot, shares how we can prepare our kids to become the leaders of the next generation. He shows how to cultivate truth in today's children so they can withstand the current of shifting values in the culture around them. While trying to raise his children to love their God and country, Dr. Talbot became aware that there is a real war going on for the hearts and minds of the next generation. Although formally trained as a medical doctor, Dr. Talbot stepped back from his ophthalmology practice to start his conservative publishing company, BRAVE Books. BRAVE Books has a mission to empower this generation's youth with conservative values so that the next generation will be filled with strong and discerning leaders. Dr. Talbot and I discuss the importance of creating family time and safe spaces for conversations with our children. Dr. Talbot relates ways to use stories to teach children about larger concepts. We explore the powerful impact of playing games and making time with our kids enjoyable. Trent emphasizes the need to discuss current topics with young children in ways they can understand, particularly using stories. He shares how we can invite kids of different ages to talk to us about sensitive or controversial issues. Kids will hear about these subjects from those in the world around us if we don't share the truth with them. Connect with Dr. Talbot and BRAVE Books at https://bravebooks.us/ I would like to invite you to join The True Crime Mission Fields Program, a life-changing opportunity exclusively joining Christians who have married faith and true crime. On WMAL's "O'Connor and Company" radio program on Tuesday, Larry O'Connor and Julie Gunlock discussed how a Biden health official is pushing puberty blockers on kids. Kristin founded Language Ninjas to empower parents and children by empowering their language. She now guides parents in upgrading their communication with their kids. We talk about her new book “Abracadabra, I know what to do!” and her "My Wins Journal" as well as what an Enlisted Level 3 story work coach is and being a co-host on the Pirate Living Podcast. You can follow Kristin on Instagram@Language Ninjas or go her website www.languageninjas.meTo connect with me, Alana Banana, follow on IG @TheAlanaBananaShow or join the Inspired Grownups Private FB Group. Episode 75 with Dr. Raafia Muhammad. "We all have different brains and we should honor neurodiversity in the same way we honor gender diversity or racial diversity or religious diversity." Dr. Saline is a clinical psychologist and author of the award-winning book, What Your ADHD Child Wishes You Knew: Working Together to Empower Kids for Success in School and Life. She lectures and facilitates workshops internationally on topics such as understanding ADHD, executive functioning, anxiety, motivation, different kinds of learners, and the teen brain. She is a regular contributor to ADDitude Magazine and Psychology, and currently hosts a live ADHD Support Group + Q&A every Friday over on Facebook with ADDitude Magazine. Dr. Saline and I talk about how her interest in ADHD as a psychologist was sparked by her own neurodivergent family. We also talk about inattentive type ADHD in childhood and why so many kids — both boys and girls — with inattentive ADHD end up overlooked and ultimately diagnosed with depression and anxiety instead of ADHD. We also talk about the adult diagnosis experience and the best ways for you and your doctor to determine whether you have ADHD as opposed to possibly another situational struggle. We'd never heard of the phrase stinking thinking until Sharon Saline used it with us on the show this week. But we knew what it meant immediately. We live with it. It's the thinking we use about ourselves when we're compromised or when our reserves of resiliency have been tapped, and when what we need more than anything else is just a little bit of self-compassion. But as ADHDers, finding self-compassion isn't always natural. We have to make a practice of it, integrating the language and behaviors of compassion into our days and hours such that when we need it, it's not so hard to find. Dr. Sharon Saline specializes in an integrative approach to managing ADHD, anxiety, executive functioning skills, learning differences & mental health in neurodiverse children, teens, adults & families and she joins us again today to talk all about living with ADHD and still managing to find a dose of self-compassion under the weight of it all.About Sharon Saline, Psy.D.Sharon Saline, Psy.D. has focused her work on ADHD, anxiety, learning differences, and mental health challenges and their impact on school and family dynamics for over 30 years.
