What is the most important message you want your daughter to hear from you about sex? Such a great question! We wish we had come up with it. But truly, it’s from Dina Alexander of Educate Empower Kids. Lucky us, she’s back on the podcast! This time helping us take sex talks for daughters a step beyond periods and puberty.  We don’t have to tell you that the media isn’t very kind when it comes to women. From movies and magazines to social media and porn, women and girls are airbrushed and photoshopped, exploited, objectified, and generally made to feel like they are just not enough … or just enough to satisfy the male gaze.  We claim to be an enlightened society, where women are respected and heard. And yet the same old dangerous sexual stereotypes repeatedly surface. Think about that. While we’re telling our girls that they can grow up to be anything they want—POWER TO THE PERIOD!—women are continually portrayed as sex objects on social media and in film and print. Is it surprising then that these scripts find their way into first kisses, dating, and eventual sexual relationships?  Hmmm, looks like we have some work ahead of us.  More about today’s guest Dina Alexander, MS, is the founder and CEO of Educate and Empower Kids. She is the creator of How to Talk to Your Kids About Pornography and the 30 Days of Sex Talks and 30 Days to a Stronger Child programs. Something I have learned about family culture is that when we get casual about our environment, our media, our habits, and our relationships, our family culture starts to get influenced by the world culture in a negative way. Becoming media literate means that you are able to observe the ways that our media is shaping our culture, and make conscious choices about the types of media your family will consume.  Dina Alexander is in tune with how our media shapes our behaviors. I have learned that our media and marketing is designed to be polarizing, to make us feel like we are inadequate so we will buy more, to judge others and ourselves based on what the media says is important.  It is a toxic environment, and we need to be available to advocate for our children in the world of social media, digital marketing, and media consumption. How comfortable are you talking about race? Up until recently, I have NOT been comfortable talking about this topic because I recognized how uninformed and privileged I am–and that made me feel a little ashamed. Because this topic matters. SO MUCH. It’s really common when we realize we’re uneducated in certain areas to stay quiet–because if we open our mouths and start learning and asking questions, we might say something that is offensive or hurts someone. But staying quiet is not the answer: Answers come from seeking learning and asking for help. That is why I invited Dr. Lucretia Berry on the podcast to teach us. Dr Berry (http://brownicity.com/) is the founder of Brownicity— Many Hues, One Humanity, an agency dedicated to advocacy, education, and support for racial healing and anti racism. She has dedicated her life to developing and teaching anti racism curriculum to college and high school students, adults through ministry and online, and of course within her own home as the mother of three beautiful daughters. In this episode, Dr. Berry teaches us how to talk to our kids about skin tone and race through these three takeaways: How to Talk to Your Kids About Skin Tone with BrownicityReject the colorblind approach as a solution to racism. Normalize conversations about skin tone and race with your children so they can consciously, fluently, and confidently navigate our hyper-racialized society.  Invest in an anti race/ism education to gain understanding (e.g. books, classes, podcasts, teachers, not informal discussions). Today is the second in our series of episodes titled “You Are Your Child’s Most Important Teacher.”  Dina Alexander is a mother of three teenagers and the founder of Educate and Empower Kids, which is an incredible resource for those “difficult conversations” we all need and want to have with our kids, but we’re just not sure where to start. On this week’s episode, Dina is teaching us how to talk to our kids about pornography. I am so grateful for her expertise and confidence on this topic. This is a heavy, intimidating topic for me to cover. I want to be so careful with what I put out there on this topic because I know it’s triggering for people who have experienced this within their families, and I know there are a lot of different opinions on the best ways to handle the topic of pornography when talking to your kids. If anything, I hope the episode gets you thinking and gets you talking with people you trust about how you want to handle this topic within your home. How to Educate and Empower Kids About PornographyDina’s three takeaways for talking to your kids about pornography: Define pornography for your kids and discuss possible places your child may be exposed. Wondering how to start the sex talks with your kids? Join us as we chat with Dina Alexander, author of the 30 Days of Sex Talks book series, and founder of Educate and Empower Kids.   Dina Alexander, MS, is the founder and CEO of Educate and Empower Kids. She is the creator of How to Talk to Your Kids About Pornography and the 30 Days of Sex Talks and 30 Days to a Stronger Child programs. Dina founded EEK after reading a simple article about teen porn consumption. As she tirelessly researched the unhealthy media, risky apps and other online dangers inundating our kids, she realized that she had to do everything in her power to warn and teach other parents. Besides raising her own children, it is her life’s work to help parents, teachers and community leaders raise strong, healthy kids who use technology for good in this new digital age.   Educate and Empower Kids (EEK) provides resources to parents and educators to encourage deep connection with their kids through media education, meaningful family communication and intentional parenting. We believe this must be done by teaching digital citizenship, media literacy, and healthy sexuality education—including education about the dangers of online pornography.   Highlights from this episode: -Kids are at different ages and stages. We need to tailor the talk to their developmental needs. -Work on getting over initial awkwardness. Learn to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. -Answer curious questions as quickly as you can. (We don’t want Google to answer for us!) -Add your values to the conversation. -Understand curiosity and establish yourself as the first, best source of information. We want our kids come to us for answers. -Teach the difference between healthy sex and pornography.   Links/Resources: 30 Days of Sex Talks: Ages 3 to 7 (Book) 30 Days of Sex Talks: Ages 8 to 11 (Book) 30 Days of Sex Talks: Ages 12+ (Book) Sexual Health: 4 Strategies for Easy Parent/Child Talks (Parents Aware Article) Child On Child Harmful Sexual Behavior with Dawn Hawkins (Raising Today’s Kids Podcast) Below is a handout from Educate and Empower Kids that outlines appropriate sex talk topics for different age groups. Tried to talk to your kids about sex? Epic fail? We feel your pain. A lot of our parents send in sex talk questions. The point of this show is to help us to remember to relax! Have a sense of humor! And don’t try so hard to be perfect!    Tune in for some hilarious stories from parents--including US--failing miserably at the sex talk. In our head, it seems so straightforward. For instance, we’ll just show our kids a short video clip about the “miracle of life.” But afterward, by their horrified expressions you'd think we just showed them a preview of the Alien movie. Oops. Have no fear. We have some pointers.    Today we'll be discussing three basic guidelines for having successful sex talks with our kids:   Relax and remove shame Just answer the question! Have ongoing talks   In the end, if we’ve done these three things, then we’ve done a great job! The main focus of this episode is to take some time to laugh and to remind us not to be so hard on ourselves.    I. RELAX AND REMOVE THE SHAME  -Our body language says volumes  -Practice saying sex/anatomy words so they feel comfortable and casual to help put your kids at ease (we talk more about this in Get Off the Fence) -If you are uptight then your kids will be too -Have a sense of humor -Kids are innocent--they are genuinely curious, living in this new, amazing body and want to know all about it -Help preserve the wonder kids have about their body -If we are relaxed, it will encourage our kids to come back and ask more questions -You don’t need to have awkward facts-of-life talks; instead have easygoing “oh by the way” conversations about intimacy with your kids -Try having a question of the day if you need help getting the conversation started -Even if you’re totally squirming in the inside, try to act calm and cool on the outside -Why is all of this such a secret anyhow … ?   II. JUST ANSWER THE QUESTION! -Don’t overcomplicate things -If someone asks what time it is, do you tell them how to build a watch?  -Use reflective listening; when your kids ask a question, ask them a question back -There are age-appropriate resources; here are some great books from Educate and Empower Kids that we love: 30 Days of Sex Talks: Ages 3 to 7 (book) 30 Days of Sex Talks: Ages 8 to 11 (book) 30 Days of Sex Talks: Ages 12+ (book) -Sometimes we jump to conclusions; instead, pause and think about the question through a child’s eyes  -Don’t just fly off into a long lecture; instead ask your child more questions and have a back-and-forth discussion -When children lead the conversation everything changes -Ask your children what THEY think!   CALL FOR RESOURCES! Do you have some great books, video clips, or other tools that you use to help teach your kids about healthy sexuality? Please share! Click here to contact us or leave a comment below.   III. HAVE ONGOING TALKS  -Talking about sex and pornography is not a “one and done”  -You might notice that we touch on this theme (ongoing talks) a lot on our show: in our Construction Site episode we called it “Keep on Truckin’” and in our Rattlesnakes episode we emphasized the need to “Talk Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.” We are going to keep driving this home because it is so important to have ongoing talks with your kids! -When kids learn about healthy sexuality from their parents it's an extra layer of protection against the multitude of confusing messages bombarding them in the media -Use everyday moments to talk about sex -In our interview with Kristen Jenson (My Child Saw Porn, Now What? A S.M.A.R.T. Plan for Parents), she challenged us to talk “shoulder to shoulder” while doing the dishes, chores, on a walk, etc.  -Dina Alexander, founder of Educate and Empower Kids is coming on the show soon to talk about her books, 30 Days of Sex Talks! This is a great resource for talking to kids about sex! -Be creative: Marilyn has 5 boys and decided to teach her boys about female hygiene with a little kit that included a tampon, a pad, a barrette, pantyhose, and other things boys might not be familiar with. -If you don’t teach your kids about sex, then who will? Do you really want their friends--or the internet or porn--teaching them about sex? -You’ve got this, parents! Take courage!   Challenge: Want advice on how to talk to your kids about sex? Send in your questions to our contact form or mediasavvymoms@gmail.com.   Links from this Episode: You Mean it’s Not a BAH-Jina? Media is all about messages. Every post, every commercial, every shot, every movie is full of messages that try and convince us to think, feel, talk, dress, eat, and act a certain way. How in the world can we decipher these messages? And, how can we help our children see what’s going on around them? In the previous episode (episode 19), Dina Alexander from Educate & Empower Kids told us how we can begin to “read” the images and messages around us. It’s called media literacy and she says it’s a skill that we can teach ourselves and our children. In this podcast, Dina teaches us: - How the media is constantly telling us what we should wear, think, eat, etc. - How everything in the media is designed to profit off of us - we are being sold something with every message - That our children are being turned into professional marketers by the media culture they’re living in and now have more influence with more people than ever before. - How we can help our children be authentic when they’re posting on social media - We can use these media messages as an opportunity to connect with our kids Dina Alexander is the founder and president of Educate and Empower Kids, and the author of several books on helping parents talk to their children about their bodies, sexuality, pornography, media literacy, and smartphones. We live in an image-based culture and even though we see hundreds of images everyday, most of us don't know how to "read" images the same way we know how to read words. In today's episode, Geoff Steurer, MS, LMFT interviews Dina Alexander from Educate and Empower Kids on the topic of media literacy. She teaches us how we can become more literate in reading images and understanding the messages they're sending us. We also discuss: - How to give our children the power to see what they're being sold in today's multimedia world - How to help our children make decisions from a place of personal agency - How parents can break down what we’re seeing so parents and children aren’t overwhelmed. - What questions to ask when critiquing images, such as, "why was this made, who made it, who is their audience, what is the main message, what’s the hidden message, what’s included, and what’s left out?" "We have to continually have those conversations because it normalizes the idea of talking about tough topics."   Dina Alexander returned to the podcast to teach parents how to talk to our children about another hard topic: pornography.   We first discuss what Dina has researched are the trends in pornography, including the average age of exposure, what your children are "learning" from porn, and how they are targeted by the industry.  This information is essential to knowing better what our children are up against and HOW to better prepare them to make good decisions when they are faced with pornography (and the research shows, they will ALL be exposed to it at some point).   Dina then shares a variety of ways to open the dialogue with children, first by using proper sexual education and then by empowering our kids to know the truth behind the porn industry--what false messages they teach, how they use teens as a primary target.  We can then go into arming our kids to actively fight against the tides of culture and instead choose a life with healthy sexuality pursued at the right time.  And we can do all of this without using guilt and shame.   Ultimately, Dina teaches parents that the best thing we can do for our children is provide a family culture of open dialogue where no topics are off the table.  And in turn, the effects are children who are better empowered to stand up and live their values.   Show Notes Educate and Empower Kids website, Facebook, and all their books Educate and Empower Kids' book on pornography, books on body image, book on technology  Dina's last interview on Body Image Last week's episode: Monica's birth story Monica's Facebook and Instagram Monat Natural, Anti-Aging Hair Care: Contact Monica to learn more, OR research via her Monat Instagram and website Related: Monica's views on Sponsorship and WHY she's partnering with Monat Fabletics! “Just like you and I lived at the mall or lived at the football game on Friday night, a lot of our kids are living on social media . . . I want my kids to make their mistakes while still living with me.  You want to give them parameters but also you want to give them the opportunity to make choices.”   We all worry about the incessant draw that technology is having on our children these days.  You see the debates on Facebook and hear the tense conversations amongst parents: How much tech-use is appropriate?  How can we limit screen time?  When should children be allowed to use technology?   Before we can answer all that, however, we need to be asking the more appropriate question, as posed by Dina Alexander: "How can we empower our children to use technology responsibly and for good?"   Dina is the founder of the non-profit Educate and Empower Kids, which strives to help parents "parent in the digital age" by preparing their children, not scaring them.  She is an expert on so many hard topics we need to discuss with our children from technology, body image, to pornography.  Today, she shares her well-researched views on what we can do to help our children learn to make wise choices with technology by building an open communication with them, one based on openness and love, not shame. Dina Alexander is the founder and president of Educate and Empower Kids (educateempowerkids.org), an organization determined to strengthen families by teaching digital citizenship, media literacy, and healthy sexuality education—including education about the dangers of online porn. She is the creator of Noah’s New Phone: A Story About Using Technology for Good, Messages About Me: A Journey to Healthy Body Image, How to Talk to Your Kids About Pornography and the 30 Days of Sex Talks and 30 Days to a Stronger Child programs. She received her master’s degree in recreation therapy from the University of Utah and her bachelors from Brigham Young University. She is an amazing mom and loves spending time with her husband and three kids. Together, they live in Texas. Special Guest: Dina Alexander So who wants more information about how to have THE talk with their kids. You know the one. THE SEX TALK! This is one of those conversations that often makes us all squirm in our seats and yet, gotta have it. And remember, while you may not be talking to your kids about sex yet, you'll need to talk about it at some point—and likely sooner than later, no matter what your family values are and what you personally think your children should or shouldn't be doing. And for those of you who have already been in the thick of it—perhaps you've already had a discussion about privacy, your child's body or sex itself – remember, it's never one big talk, but a series of little ones, so this podcast can help provide you with one, two or three extra nuggets you might not have thought of yet when the topic comes up again. And you know it will! It always does. The post How to Talk to Kids about Sex featuring Dina Alexander appeared first on drrobynsilverman.com.
