They embark on a journey of discovery, take their discoveries back to their lives, and live the better versions of themselves. They benefit their spouses and partners, their children, and their communities. They make strides toward achieving the growth they've been seeking. There's a third group of men, however, who begin doing the work and recognize that this will be their lifelong mission or their legacy. They get called to a life of service of bringing this approach to emotional healing to every man they meet. That's what happened to me. The work changed me deeply, and I resonated with its power so greatly that it became my ministry to bring this work forward to help men heal their deepest wounds. Unless the guest is someone I know well—an acquaintance or personal friend—I'm taking a leap of faith that this person and I will have enough to talk about to keep the conversation going for the better part of an hour. The concern might be that the person isn't interesting, or the conversation flags. Unlike many of our guests, Ross is not a professional in the field of personal development. He's neither a coach, facilitator, nor author. He is to my mind something much more impressive: He's a man who has applied his learnings to change his life for the better. Ross is an articulate and insightful proponent and practitioner of the work. We think you'll find him not only an affable and charming fellow to spend some time with, but also a relatable everyman who is making the journey toward his best self. If you've been listening to the Authenticity Road Podcast over the last two seasons, you know that Jordan and I both came to this work via EVRYMAN and the somatic method they teach. For some time, though, I've been considering that there's more than one way for men to pursue their personal and emotional development. With that in mind, we're kicking off our third season of the show—our 51st episode—with a guest whose name may be familiar to many in the world of men's work: Boysen Hodgson.  Boysen is a dedicated husband and dad. He's a fiercely optimistic advocate for men's transformation. And—if you've seen his name in your inbox—it's likely as a result of his role as Communications Director for the ManKind Project USA. I will own that I entered our conversation with a bias and more than a few preconceived notions about the ManKind Project, what they stand for, and how they do the work. I was delighted to have my views challenged and to learn quite a lot about this longstanding and impactful organization. Whether or not you're familiar with ManKind Project, you'll no doubt find much to think about in what Boysen has to say. As we mentioned last time, it's often said that we shouldn't talk about money, politics, and religion in polite society. Well, we're going to throw one more taboo topic into the mix: Sex.In part two of our season finale, we continue our chat with repeat guest, self-relationship coach and IFS practitioner J. Stamatelos. In this part of our conversation, we dive into a topic that has both fascinated and confounded humanity for millennia: the complex intersection between religion and sexuality. It's an important discussion, because the way religion perceives and regulates sex has real-world consequences—whether that's related to gender roles, reproductive rights, or sexual education. The teachings and traditions we grow up with can deeply impact our self-esteem, relationships, and even our mental health. And although we're speaking from inside our religious experience, this of course goes beyond just one religion or one cultural context. With of all that said, it's time to venture into the provocative, the sacred, the sensual, and possibly the scandalous. Specifically, we're diving into a topic that has puzzled philosophers, shaped civilizations, and sparked countless debates: the intersection of religion and authenticity. That is, can our spiritual beliefs coexist with our true selves? Or does religion sometimes pressure us into feeling we need to be someone we're not?Followers of the Authenticity Road Podcast are familiar with our repeat guest, self-relationship coach and IFS practitioner J. This season, we did things a little differently as we shifted our attention to bringing in guests on a wider range of topics. Given that, we've only had time so far for one episode of us talking to each other. As we are nearing the end of season two—with only two more episodes left after this—we thought it was high time for one more exclusively Ettore and Jordan episode. In this episode, we have a chat about how our journey in the men's work arena is evolving. The focus here is particularly on Jordan as he is spreading his wings to expand his work beyond the confines of the community in which we've spent much of our time over the past few years. As the conversation continues, we also home in on some of the reasons behind this shift and delve into a few questions that I have about Jordan's shift and approach to things. And while it may seem at first that this conversation is narrowly focused on only his experience, you may find that the issues we raise and what's going on for both of us in our evolving men's work journey also resonate with where you are, where you've been—or maybe even where you are going. We hope you'll enjoy this “just the two of us” episode. This interview, with our dear brother, friend and co-facilitator Aaron Musicant, is a prime example of “following the energy” at work. One thing is said early in our talk that steers us onto what will be our path for much of the show. Call it an accidental conversation about fathers. Aaron and I find ourselves talking about our fathers, what it's like to be fathers to our children, and how to be fathers to ourselves. Addiction comes in many forms. Most of them are difficult to conceal. Whether it's drugs, alcohol, or gambling, the outward effects of addiction are often easily visible to the family, friends, and coworkers of the addict. However, porn addiction—the compulsive dependence on pornography that interferes with the ability to function—can remain largely undetected. And yet the fallout is quite real. In addition to the shame and guilt one might feel, there is also the risk of the inability to perform sexually without porn, alienation of spouses and partners, and disconnection from relationships, work, or other activities. The advent of high-speed internet has kicked the problem into overdrive, as addicts now have access to a nearly unlimited stream of addictive resources. In this episode, we speak with coach, author and speaker Joshua Shea. Josh specializes in the realm of addiction, with a particular focus on pornography addiction. He addresses the concerns not only of those with a porn addiction, but also the issues that come with being a partner of a porn addict, and raising children in the age of high-speed internet access. Josh has been pornography-free since March 2014, and he believes that if we can begin to talk more about porn addiction and mental health, we'll see rates of addiction drop.  Because the topic is sex, many folks are reluctant to have a frank discussion around the mental health implications of this disease. But this is a vital conversation that we need to be having. We hope you'll find our talk with Josh to be revealing and informative. So let's get on the road!About Joshua SheaJoshua Shea is a pornography addiction expert, certified betrayal trauma coach, therapeutic disclosure specialist and the author of four books about pornography addiction, including He's a Porn Addict…Now What? An Expert and Former Addict Answer Your Questions (2022) focusing on the trauma partners feel when learning their loved one has an issue with pornography.Since 2018, Joshua has given more interviews about pornography addiction and betrayal trauma than anybody in the world. To date, he has internationally appeared on nearly 400 podcasts, television and radio shows using his wealth of research and personal story to promote the ideas that porn addiction spans all demographics and those with a problem should seek help before it's too late. He also speaks extensively about the issue of working through betrayal trauma, especially with the partners of addicts and those who are facing infidelity.Prior to admitting his 24-year addiction to pornography (and 22-year addiction to alcohol) in 2014, Joshua was a prominent magazine publisher, award-winning journalist, film festival founder and politician in central Maine. In 2017, Joshua launched RecoveringPornAddict.com which morphed into today's PAddictRecovery.com He has also contributed articles about recovery to TheFix.com and Recovery Today magazine, is a TEDx Talk speaker and has developed and presents a porn addiction educational presentation series for colleges, churches, libraries and other groups. Episode 2.11: Surviving Sexual Assault with Robert Uttaro

You likely know that the vast majority of victims of sexual violence, abuse, or rape are women and girls. Yet, it's important to recognize that men and boys also can be victims of sexual violence. Currently, about 14% of reported rapes involve men or boys, 1 in 6 reported sexual assaults is against a boy and 1 in 25 reported sexual assaults is against a man. Keep in mind that these are merely the number of reported incidents. Given our society's outmoded beliefs around male sexuality—and the man box training that doesn't permit us to acknowledge our victimhood—many men and boys make the difficult choice not to report sex crimes committed against them. Men and boys who are sexual assault victims are at increased risk of depression, suicide or substance abuse, experience work or school problems, and can develop difficulties in connecting with friends and family. It's time to increase awareness around the risks of sexual violence that men and boys face, and to work to create safe environments that can foster healing for victims. In this episode, we talk with rape crisis counselor and author Robert Uttaro. Bobby is an activist and advocate for survivors of sexual violence. He works as a counselor for victims and their significant others, and facilitates workshops that unpack the realities of sexual violence and offer strategies for support and prevention with a focus on healing. Bobby's book To the Survivors: One Man's Journey as a Rape Crisis Counselor with True Stories of Sexual Violence gives a voice to those who have been victimized and provides a forum for them to tell their stories in their own words. This is a sensitive topic, so we recommend that you exercise self-care in listening. We hope you'll find this discussion informative and helpful. So let's get on the road!About Robert UttaroRobert Uttaro is currently in his 12th year as a rape crisis counselor and community educator. Inspired by his undergraduate studies in Criminal Justice, he continues to embrace a lifelong commitment to activism and advocacy for survivors of sexual violence. Serving as a counselor, Bobby supports rape survivors and their significant others through myriad emotional, spiritual, and legal issues. He also facilitates workshops that unpack the realities of sexual violence, and offers strategies for support and prevention with a focus on healing. What does it take to become one with yourself? Is that even possible? If you live your life largely looking outward and not inward, you may not create a deep connection with yourself, so you may make decisions that seem exciting in the short run but may not be right for you in the long run. Can you instead train yourself to achieve clarity of thought and consistently make choices that lead to peace? In this episode, we welcome Tarun Gulati, founder of a mental wellbeing company called Adios, an acronym for A Dialogue In Objective Silence. Tarun has found that a regular habit of contemplation based in a specific set of principles strengthens your self-connection. He believes that people are not unhappy; they are unclear. He says that clarity of thought and peace of mind are skills, not gifts. And they are skills that you can learn. We think you'll find Tarun's approach to a more peaceful life both fascinating and enlightening. If you've been following the show this season, you know that we've been focusing more on specific topics and having conversations around very distinct issues. However, this episode is a little different. Today's show has no specific topic, and no agenda. This time, the show is just a conversation with someone Ettore personally finds extraordinarily charming and engaging.Douglas Robbins is a writer with a slew of novels under his belt and the host of the popular Den of Discussion podcast. In this wide-ranging discussion, Ettore and Doug touch on the search for finding truth through art, metaphysics and the supernatural, and—most importantly—the significance of men's work in helping men heal themselves and world around them. We think you'll find Doug to be charming and engaging, too, and we hope you'll enjoy this fun and candid conversation. So let's get on the road!About Douglas RobbinsDouglas Robbins began his writing career at a young age when one of his teachers asked the class to write a poem. In that moment he found a power in words that he never had found anywhere else. According to Doug, “As time passed, I started to write more seriously because it was the only profession that ever made sense. It wasn't so much a career move; it was a move out of necessity.”Doug grew up, attended college, then joined the workforce but continued to write in his spare time. Frustrated with one dead-end job after another, he finally decided to take his chances with the only profession that ever made sense. He explains, “I left my thankless corporate job after years of waking up sick and dreading each day. Though I had little money in the bank, I decided right then if I were going to live or die, it would be by the pen.”Doug lives near the Catskill Mountains with his wife and family. Have you been the victim of a bully or an abuser? Or maybe you played the part of the perpetrator. Did you experience violence at the hands of other males and then perpetuate that cycle? If you're like most men, you've experienced violence from or committed it against other men. It's such an ingrained part of our culture, that you may not even recognize it. This is the insidious way that the patterns of male on male violence continue to repeat. We enculturate our boys with it—consider superheroes or the glorification of inflicting pain on opponents in certain sports—and we carry that trauma forward into our adult lives. In this episode, we take a deeper look at the roots of this phenomenon and talk about how to stop the cycle. In this episode, we welcome Brad Mewhort, an expert in male on male violence. Brad is the author of the book, The Peaceful Man: Heal Within Yourself the Personal Effects and Historic Patterns of Male-on-Male Violence. Brad joins us to speak about his mission to prevent male-on-male violence and end physical bullying. This is a necessary conversation for every man to consider. We hope you'll give a listen and ponder how you can help stop the cycle of violence. About Brad:Brad has a mission to prevent male-on-male violence and end physical bullying. In his adolescence, he was a victim of physical bullying and became an occasional bully himself. Over the past two decades, he has done a lot of work to heal from the personal impacts of these encounters with violence.Since 2014, he has been teaching and supporting other men on their healing journeys by facilitating groups and through 1:1 mentoring sessions that include body-based healing experiences and contemplative practices. Brad has received extensive training and holds certifications in developmental coaching, somatic practices, group facilitation, and transformative change.Brad believes that men healing from violence and finding peace within themselves are keys to enabling humanity and all of life on earth to flourish. He wrote The Peaceful Man in service of this vision and as a means of helping men to embark on journeys of healing.Brad offers individual online sessions and men's groups to help those looking to heal from violence.Get in touch with Brad:Brad's website: www.peacefulmanbook.comEmail Brad: brad@peacefulmanbook.comBuy The Peaceful Man on AmazonGuided meditations from the book#menswork   #selfimprovement   #menshealth.  #mensmentalhealth.  #mensemotions  #mensemotionalhealth.  #personaldevelopment.  #personalgrowth.   #evryman  #thepeacefulman  #peacefulmanbook  #bradmewhort  #bullying  #maleonmaleviolence  #maleviolence  #violentmen  #physicalabuseVisit the Authenticity Road website: authenticityroad.onlineConnect with us here.© Authenticity Road, Inc. Behind the inspiration of Authenticity Road was a fairly straightforward notion: That for each of us doing the work to find our personal authenticity, there is a road to discovery. For some the road is rocky and uneven; for others clean and smooth. But for all of us, the road is one we embark on alone. When I first conceived of Authenticity Road, I assumed it was a metaphor. And then I met Adam Call. In his personal journey, he turned that metaphor on its head by literally traveling the world to find his authentic self.  Over the next three episodes, Adam will be our guide for the most fascinating and unique path to self discovery I've ever witnessed. It might seem odd to devote all this time to one story. But when you hear the truths Adam shares, the growth he experienced, and the insights he gained, you'll understand the enormous impact his story has had on those who know him.In this episode, Adam realizes that something needs to change. Here's a question just for the guys: What's your physical and emotional connection to your male friends? For most of us, physical contact and emotional support between men can only happen in really specific situations. As a man, how often do you actually get the opportunity to express physical affection and emotional connection toward other men? Healthy levels of physical contact and emotional support contribute to men's feelings of joy, connection and purpose in life. Unfortunately, in the United States social stigmas make it difficult for men to access healthy levels of male contact and support. This leads us to higher levels of loneliness, detachment, depression and poor health. In this episode, we speak with leadership and life coach, Louis Chabrier.
