Hello, Are you looking for an inspirational book – either for yourself or as a gift (maybe a graduation gift)? I'm sharing with you one of my personal favorite books that I own and have given to both of my kids upon their high school graduation. The Alchemist is a story about following our dreams. The concept of “personal legend” has stayed with me since being introduced to the book several years ago. And, it guides me in living a happy life. I hope this book review will inspire you to pick up the book the next time you're looking for an inspirational book. Cheers, Marie Next Steps:

In this episode we talk about our wins and struggles over the past week, and we answer questions from you, the listeners. Questions:Question #1: I'm a busy mom with 2 young kids (3, 5y/o) and life is crazy. I know exercising is so important for having a long health span but I feel guilty every time I walk out the door for my 1-hour workout. Am I a terrible parent for wanting to get a workout in instead of spending time with them? Am I overthinking it? Have you worked with anyone in the past that has had this issue?Be the model, incorporate movement with them, tell them where you're going/what you're doing, explain the importance, fill your own cup so you can fill theirs/others, shift your mindset, create an environment at home for movement/fun, “5 keys to unstoppable family fitness.” Model Health Show Podcast w/ Shawn Stevensonhttps://open.spotify.com/episode/4JOmsHhjLSFCcSFaZuzJ1q?si=nfpn0-JlSQWl6alKe_WPzQQuestion #2: I have terrible posture and my neck and upper back are always tired and sore. Anything I can do to help?Spend time in extension, find balance in how you spend most of your time, driving a car, sitting at the front of a chair, sit to stand at desk, creating space, posture reminder stickers, holding stress in the neck/shoulders (massage), spinal health, core strength, it stretching and popping isn't helping than it's probably a strength issueQuestion #3: I‘ve noticed you put cinnamon in your coffee everyday.. what's the reason? Do you just like it or are there some health benefits behind it?Cinnamon: tastes good BUT is also a spice you want to add into your life for these reasons: Anti inflammatory, improved digestion, anti fungal, anti bacterial, soothe gas & bloating, blood sugar regulation Recommendation: Michael Moss Books:Salt, Sugar, FatHookedQuote:“The world is changed by your example, not by your opinion.” -Paolo Coelho author of The Alchemist “Dont adapt to the energy in the room, influence the energy in the room.”
In his book THE ALCHEMIST, Paolo Coelho talks about a Personal Legend. So many people give up just moments before they reach their own Personal Legend. After a while, if you aren't getting the desired goal, it's hard to convince yourself not to give up. It's especially hard when other people are telling you to give up. Insecure people lash out at people who are more accomplished or ambitious, or courageous. They're intimidated by someone who rubs them the wrong way. This also applies to new tools or technology. These days, it's a common reaction toward AI. So many people fear that AI will take over their jobs. Instead, they can choose to get new skills and get in front of this innovation. You're the one choosing your outlook: Rather than seeing someone as a threat – you can see them as an ally. Rather than seeing innovation as a threat – you can see it as an opportunity. Nothing worth doing comes easy. It's always darkest before dawn. But once you've earned your place, the success is so much sweeter. Inspired by Paolo Coelho's THE ALCHEMIST, Allan McKay talks about your Personal Legend, how to eliminate the negative voices that challenge you to keep going, how to change your own outlook – and choose to be inspired, instead of being intimidated. Paolo Coelho said “the simple things are also the most extraordinary things. Only the wise can see them.” Children have an innate sense of wonder and curiosity. But as adults, we lost our curiosity and would rather be right and know. Wonder opens our eyes to the magic within and around us. It invites a sense of interest, awe and reverence for the mundane as well as the miraculous. It's been shown that being in wonder helps us feel more content, calm, connected and joyful. Let's explore wonder in today's meditation. This week: can you invite more wonder to remember you are part of something greater. The everyday moments of wonder and awe help grow your appreciation for this beautiful journey called life.

For every human seeking to discover their personal authenticity, there is a road to self-discovery. For some of us, the road is rocky and uneven; for others, it's clean and smooth. But for each and every one of us, the road is one we must embark on alone. Adam Call took that journey—literally—by traveling around the world to find out who he really is. In the previous episode of this story , we found out how Adam discovered that his life was not working and how he came to the conclusion that he had to hit the road to find himself. Armed with a passport and a copy of Paolo Coelho's The Alchemist, Adam set forth on his own hero's journey. In this episode, we follow Adam as he continues his global trek for self discovery. Along the way, he lands in Morocco, Paris, Italy, Prague, Istanbul and Cappadocia. He ends up in Israel where a meditation turns into a life-changing experience. You're sure to be inspired by his story. #menswork #selfimprovement #menshealth #mensmentalhealth #mensemotions #mensemotionalhealth #personaldevelopment #personalgrowth #evrymanVisit the Authenticity Road website: authenticityroad.onlineConnect with us here.© Authenticity Road. Hello to you listening in Liberty, Kansas!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Thoughts on Thursday and your host, Diane Wyzga. Here we are mid-way through 2022. While many of us are seeking Be-ing over Do-ing there is still a great deal of pressure to open a new door, more doors, better doors to your life, your business, your heart, your relations... It's exhausting! Might there be another way? Yes.Perhaps you're familiar with Paolo Coelho de Souza, a Brazilian novelist. At the very least I imagine you've read his best seller The Alchemist, and the prequel, The Pilgrimage, about the road to Santiago. I walked that very same road to self-discovery. I spent a night in the albergue Coelho sponsors. So, when I read what he had to say about doors I paid attention. "Close some doors today. Not because of pride, incapacity, or arrogance, but simply because they lead you nowhere."Question: Which doors will you close today? Where will you go next? You're invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, share a nice shout out on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time! Remember to stop by the website, check out the Services, arrange a Discovery Call, and Opt In to stay current with Diane and Quarter Moon Story Arts and on Linked In. One of the very things that I have in common With 99% of these high level dudes who’ve been in my podcast Is that the careers we have now have absolutely nothing to do with whatever degree we went to school for. We end up finding our niche through experiences or even hobbies that turned into what we loved doing the most, and are making pretty good money out of it. Kim Barrett had no idea whatsoever about marketing He never knew he had a knack for it Until he sent out an email offering ad spaces for a small business he and his dad were running And found 50k in their PayPal the next day. Today he is a luminary when it comes to social media marketing. His company, Your Social Voice, is a multimillion dollar company that serves high ticket companies in Australia, and has made clients grow to 6-7 figures in their business. Kim has an interesting methodology on hiring the right people for his company And philosophy of honest and sincere marketing I’d say Kim is a renaissance man because he’s accomplished so much in his life I love the way this savage thinks and I just had to have him over for an interview. Sometimes the best education come from the people we meet And I hope you learn a really cool thing or two from Kim Barrett When you hit press play. See you in my episode, legends. Cheers. On this episode of Got Your 6, Tony Nash talks with Mike Erwin, the founder and executive director of https://www.teamrwb.org/ (Team Red, White, and Blue (Team RWB)), a non-profit that connects veterans to the local communities through sports. Mike talks about how he stays fit physically and mentally and shares some actionable advice on how he manages his time, improves himself, and navigates his time and schedule to achieve maximum results. Mental and Physical Fitness Mike's time in the Army continues to impact his life – from as simple as his affinity for the Jacob's ladder (which began during a 2009 Afghanistan deployment) to subscribing to a solid routine and working out in the morning. While he is not as physically active as he was during the Army, he says he's now back at it “with a vengeance.” The two books that have made an impact on his life and that he keeps on re-reading are: 100 Ways to Motive Yourself (2012) by Steve Chandler helps a person create an action plan for living his vision in business and in life. The Alchemist (1993) by Paolo Coelho, a fiction that tells the story of a shepherd boy Santiago, who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure as extravagant as any ever found. Citing the lessons from The Alchemist, Mike is a big believer that everything happens for a reason and that failures pave the road to success. “It can be dangerous when we tell that to other people: ‘Ah, everything happens for a reason, don't worry about it.' But the reality is, if you take that approach and that view into life, that the setbacks and the adversity and the mistakes that you made – while it feels like in the moment you're like ‘Ugh that was terrible, what a big mistake!' – if you can learn to see that for what it is… A setback is a setup for a comeback.” On Failures as Temporary Setbacks Mike is also the co-founder & president of https://posproject.org/ (The Positivity Project), a non-profit group that aims to empower the youth to build positive relationships. But it took several hiccups along the way before the organization became what it is today. Mike and his partner committed a big mistake when they used philanthropy as the organization's business model. They later realized it was not feasible for their business, which focuses on character education because schools already have a budget for that. So they tweaked their model – from seeking grants to building a business that would make schools want to pay them for training, curriculum, and resources, among others. That huge mistake proved to be their key to success to have a sustainable business. Urgent vs Important and the Importance of Tracking Time In 2014, Mike learned to view things using the Eisenhower Box, which helps a person decide on and prioritize tasks by urgency and importance. It helps users sort out less urgent and important tasks which could be either delegated or ignored. Another thing that has transformed his life is tracking his time. He tracks if he has spent too long on emails, if he has not exercised much in a week, or has done things for leisure, such as golf. Mike said this becomes very important in making sure you have as much time as possible to spend on important but not urgent things, such as relationships planning, eating, health, and exercising. These activities are usually those that get ignored easily. He says he applies this in menial tasks such as getting rid of cables in the house and deleting useless apps from his phone – things that take his time mindlessly. A 32-hectare farm owner, Mike says he makes most of his business decisions while working on the property. On Constant Improvement and His Personal Relationship with Technology Mike likens constant self-improvement to tango – 2 steps forward, one step back – as growth is not linear. He also believes growth comes at a gradual pace. As he counts time, Mike says he has improved his relationship with technology and the digital world,...

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk: true-life, practical, funny, heart-breaking, insightful human experience stories from women who are walking their lives while their lives walk them and the lasting difference these journeys have made. You’ll recognize yourself in stories of adversity, challenge, fear, discovery, adventure, expression, and more. Why? Because, the sorcery of stories is this: they help each of us to be seen and heard, to understand and be understood. I’m your host, Diane Wyzga.Today my guest is Lisa Morales who’s joining us from Back East on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Lisa and I share a deep affection for the Camino de Santiago, all things pilgrim, and showing up, saying “Yes!” to the hand we are dealt. I’ve invited Lisa to walk with us and talk about the Life ups and down that led her to walking the Camino, serving as a hospitalera or hostess in an albergue or hostel, her photography, and what comes next. Welcome to the podcast, Lisa!Minutes: 33:2300 to 2:10 IntroStart From Where You Are2:10 to 9:35 Walking Together 1. He became very ill in Bilbao, but we hit the road again after hospitalization. I became injured in Ribadeo, and he marked the map where we would take up the endeavor again 18 months later. The Camino became all-encompassing. I began volunteering as hospitalera, walking more routes, and turning my first brand-new camera toward the people and places along The Way. I mentor new pilgrims here at home, and counsel returning pilgrims about integrating their camino into their “real lives.”About to become an empty-nester for the second time in 22 years, I know only that the Camino, and creating art are in my future. With Covid raging and my travel confined to the USA, I am seeing the great outdoors from the comfort of my tiny teardrop trailer, photographically documenting this astounding and disturbing moment in our history, until the Camino calls again. How to Contact and Stay In Touch with Lisahttps://lisamorales.myportfolio.com/https://www.lisamorales.com/https://twitter.com/LMoralesPhotohttps://www.pinterest.com/LisaMoralesPhoto/https://www.facebook.com/lisamoralesphoto/https://www.instagram.com/lisamoralesphoto/https://www.linkedin.com/in/lisalmorales/

In this episode, photographer Erin Douglas shares a perspective we don't often get to hear from when it comes to cancer narratives: the caregiver. Specifically, the family member who re-prioritizes their lives so that they can put the needs of their loved one first. That's what Erin did for her mother, who is recovering from a recent, second instance of cancer. Between living at the hospital and staying by her side at home, Erin hadn't slept in her own bed for six months. In episode 44, we talk to Brian Sango, aka The Property Guy, whose story reads like Paolo Coelho's "The Alchemist", so be prepared to believe in dreams. Brian is originally from Zimbabwe, he moved to Cape Town in his teens after having a dream about Table Mountain and the city. He told his mom about the dream and she suggested he move to Cape Town. So he did. He didn't know anyone in the city and started off as a parking attendant and cleaner at a Woolworths restaurant in Durbanville. One day, one of the waiters at the restaurant fell sick and he was asked to help serve customers and was soon promoted to a permanent watering position. During his tenure as a waiter, he met a couple that always wanted to be served by him and they'd always try to invite him to their offices. Little did he know that that couple owned the largest Remax franchise in the Western Cape; they eventually hired him as a PA and gave him a rent free apartment in Vredehoek. Brian stayed at Remax from 2010 to 2013 where he learned a lot about the real estate business, especially advertising and marketing. In 2012, he became a licensed real estate professional, left Remax in 2013 and joined a family business selling real estate. A few years later, when the company relocated to Johannesburg, he was invited to join another property company, where he was tasked with selling property online in Johannesburg and Pretoria, from Cape Town. Over a period of 5 years, he was able to sell 540 flats (apartments) online without ever having set foot in the apartments or neighborhoods where the apartments were located. His success in this business, led him to launch his own company, Property Made Easy, which works with clients all over the world and helps investors invest in the metros and township properties in South Africa. If you feel stuck and are doubting yourself and your resources, then this is another inspirational episode for you. Mindset vs. Skill Set - Which Is More Important In Sales? As a salesperson, which do you think is more important, a mindset or a skill set? What are the differences between the two? In this episode, Donald will explore the value of both. Defining mindset and skill set Mindset is your established attitude or beliefs. Mindset has two parts - a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. A fixed mindset settles into what is working and doesn't change. A growth mindset can see the opportunities to improve. A skill set, on the other hand, is your range of ability. What training and skills have you mastered to be able to execute the work you need to do well in your business? Donald Experiences the Difference Between Mindset and Skill Set A salesperson should have both a great mindset and the relevant skill set. When Donald was a young man his friend's father, who was like a second dad, gave him the book Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. He read it and internalized the information so he believed he would succeed in his goals. As a result, when Donald started in sales, he was a ball of energy. He watched all the movies and rolled out his B2C experience fresh from college. He was working, setting up appointments and he felt good that he could take all the ideas he'd learned and bring them into professional selling. His mindset was propelling him forward. Things got a little bit difficult when Donald entered the B2B world. He had the growth mindset but he didn't have the skill set to go with it. One of the companies he worked for had him knocking on doors and handing out business cards. This was something that Donald did not see as professional selling. Without the proper skill set, Donald felt he was just going around in circles. He eventually moved on to another company and there he got the skill set training he needed. There, he learned how to Use the phone to prospect Make a proper cold call Use LinkedIn Go to networking events Ask effective questions Challenge a prospect about their beliefs to get to better solutions. After gaining such valuable skill sets and merging them with his growth mindset, Donald started to see amazing transformation and acceleration. He started to produce well. As Donald started to grow, he noticed that colleagues that were decades his senior were remaining at the same level they'd been for years, even with much more experience. The reason? Donald's teammates had a lot of skill set but with even all their knowledge it was impossible for them to grow beyond their mindset. As a result, they missed out on the opportunities that Donald was able to enjoy. It was Donald's mindset that helped him excel and perform well. Bringing Skill Set and Mindset Together Donald was different from stagnant colleagues in that he was able to take advantage of social selling, he could see fresh opportunities, and he was eager to prospect. With the proper growth mindset and proper skill set, he was able to excel as a sales representative. Do you see why both are so critical? Having a great skill set does not guarantee success if you don't have the mindset that will push you through the glass ceilings you can set for yourself. Donald suggests taking time every single day to improve and sharpen and expand your beliefs. Listen to motivational videos, repeat your affirmations and goals, and get around like-minded people who can help you build up a positive mindset. Read the books that will help you get that growth mindset. One of Donald's favorite books is The Alchemist by Paolo Coelho, a book that will help you open your mind to your potential. Build a great library One of the best ways to support your business is by getting real about what skill sets you need to acquire and pursue that knowledge through books. Take a look at your prospecting, social, or closing skills. Do you know how to ask effective questions? Take time each day to build these skills and launch your day even better than you did the day before. Sales books are always there to help you improve and Donald has some suggestions to start your library if you haven't already. One of Donald's favorite authors is Mike Weinberg, who provides a lot of great content and value about sales management and simplifying sales. Kevin Kruse's book entitled, 15 Secrets Successful People Know About Time Management: The Productivity Habits of 7 Billionaires, 13 Olympic Athletes, 29 Straight-A students, and 239 Entrepreneurs discusses planning and time management. There are many great authors who have amazing books in a voice that will be perfect for you. If you want to turn your commute, down time, or workout into a university, download books using Audible and listen to the books if that's more convenient. No more excuses. Which is more important, Mindset or Skill Set? Of course, both are important but if Donald had to pick just one,he'd pick mindset. He understands that a person with the proper growth mindset can be taught the proper skill set. A person who is able to see how to grow will think of ways to improve like water that finds its way to the ocean. A salesperson with the proper mindset will look for the tribe and that supports growth, will help improve skills, can offer training, and will refine the skills acquired. People who lean on skill set alone will not be able to see where improvement can occur. They get stuck in their ways, work the same strategies, will fail to embrace new technology and never take advantage of creative ways to prospect. Take time every single day to sharpen your beliefs. It will help you to perform well when it's time to get to work. #SalesTips “Mindset vs. Skill Set - Which Is More Important In Sales?” episode resources What do you think? Whats up beautiful people! This episode is a quilted menagerie of brain tidbits and mind morsels. We begin by journeying back to 1967 for an iconic speech by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community. This is not the speech you heard in school. Dr. King speaks frankly and powerfully about class struggle and the need to radically restructure American society, including redistribution of wealth.Following the speech we take a look at Lebanese-American writer and visual artist Khalil Gibran, and then go for a visit with the founder of Portland Peppermills, Jonathan Glowacki, for a conversation about framing one's own subconscious architecture for optimum manifestation efficiency. Check out Jonathan's hand-crafted wooden globes at: www.turning-time.com.Finishing off the ep is a tidy lil ramble by yours truly regarding fractal electro-magnetic complexity. The book I couldn't think of in my convo with Jonathan is: The Fifth Mountain by Paolo Coelho.Enjoy the episode and please spread the word about the BNP! In today’s “Show About Everything,” (which is a walk on the weird sci-fi wild side that isn’t a part of her normal schema at all), Chryssy provides her own version of evolutionary theory based on nothing more than what she dreams up when she observes the world. We have a really robust discussion about FEAR this episode, and all the ways it gets in our way and keeps us from following our hearts. All that mush aside, we get down with the doomsday clock and some “live forever” theorizing. Prepare for your mind to be stretched and twisted and blown. Or maybe just prepare to laugh at the nonsensical nature of a few of the things that made the rounds in Chryssy’s brain this week. There’s a couple reminders to take care of yourself and a gentle nudge (mostly for Chryssy) that you can’t just SAY you engage in healthy practices, you actually have to engage in those things. We suggest you read and watch some kid stuff – The Magic School Bus is on Netflix these days and Amazon will yield you a copy of “If You Give a Mouse A Cookie.” They’ve also got some great anthologies of Charles Schultz’s Class Peanuts comics. While you putting anthologies in your shopping cart, add something by Mary Oliver. Since it’s a shopping spree, pick up Paolo Coelho’s “The Pilgrimage,” and if you want some extra fantasy (Wait?, Or is he serious?), grab “The Alchemist,” as well. May as well round out this binge with some old episodes of Seinfeld, too.Learn more about today’s topics here:https://www.loc.gov/poetry/180/133.html (Mary Oliver, The Summer Day)https://www.washingtonpost.com/weather/2020/01/23/doomsday-clock/ (Doomsday Clock, 100 seconds to midnight)https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nextbigfuture.com/2019/06/the-universe-is-14-billion-years-old-but-visible-universe-is-92-billion-light-years-wide.html%3famp (How Old Is The Universe?)Also highly recommended, a (Chryssy’s Cursory) Google search on “human evolution” and then one more on “living forever”. Besides deployment and being on the battlefield, one of the hardest moments in an army’s life is coming home and transitioning from being with the military to being with family and friends at home. Lamarr Payne and Thai Starkovich talk about an army’s journey, starting with getting into the military, becoming good friends and snipers, and coping with their lives at home. Lamarr speaks about how The Alchemist by Paolo Coelho influenced his decisions on joining the Special Forces and helped him and his platoon mates through depression. Being deployed and having traumatic experiences cause a lot of negative changes to the nervous system. Lamarr talked about how he calms down his nervous system by thinking positive and changing his criteria for a good day. By understanding and trusting people, both have found ways to decompress and cool down on their journeys. Love the show?
The School of GreatnessOprah, SuperSoul ConversationsWayne Dyer
Calling all fellow bookworms, library nerds, and general lovers of literature—it’s time for another book club episode of the podcast! Whenever there are five Fridays in a month, we devote the extra Friday to a book that we can’t get enough of. This time we decided to have a conversation about one of the best-selling books of all time (and for good reason), The Alchemist by Paolo Coelho. We each pulled a few of our favorite parts to talk about, including: Why realizing your destiny is your ONLY obligation in life (and why you don’t have to know what it is to get started) Proof that the universe is conspiring to help you get what you want How you can ask for and receive signs that you’re on the right path Why the fear of suffering is always way worse than the actual struggle that you’ll go through How to let yourself fail and be bad at things, without crumbling Why you should think twice before taking anyone else’s opinion about what to do with your life seriously Why it sometimes feel like you’re being tested by the universe, and how to not give up when things get hard Come leave us a comment after you’ve listened and let us know what YOUR favorite part of The Alchemist is, and if you haven’t read it yet, what resonated most from this conversation. And in the true spirit of this book, we’d also LOVE to hear your stories of signs and synchronicities, so come share that, too! GET ON THE PPVE VIP LIST! Our twice-yearly online group coaching program, the Passion Plan Virtual Experience, is going to be opening for enrollment in about a month! “Love is a verb. It’s not what we say, it’s what we do that matters.” – Mark Bergel Few business conversations center on love, but love is exactly what drives Dr. Mark Bergel every moment of every day. His mission is “simply” to end poverty. It may seem like a lofty goal but when you hear this amazing interview, you’ll know that if anyone can end poverty, it’s Mark and his extraordinary team! In 2001, Mark, then teaching at American University, volunteered along with his students to deliver food to families living in need in the D.C region. He found himself in homes with no beds, no dressers and no living room furniture at all. As a result, Mark profoundly changed his life along with the lives of thousands of children and adults living in need. With no seed money, but a strong conviction that we could do better for those living in poverty, he converted his living room into a nonprofit office and founded A Wider Circle. Today the organization is housed in a 25,000 square-foot facility and is planning to expand! To date, A Wider Circle has served more than 125,000 individuals, with more than 10,000 volunteers coming each year to support the effort. What You'll Learn What is the difference between living a small and a big life (I know, it got deep!) What inspired Mark to leave his job in academia and give up the life he was planning in Sedona to tirelessly pursue his mission to end poverty What drives mark to work 14-16 hours a day 365 a year and wake up energized after 4 hours of sleep (kids, don't try this at home!) How to create an organizational culture centered on love and find staff who both have the heart and the skills to get the job done How to leverage others’ talents to balance out your strengths and weaknesses as a leader What is enlightened selfishness? Why Mark's believes that we can end poverty in 20 years and how we can do it How to do seemingly impossible (beyond ending poverty) - get others to care and to instill a sense of possibility in skeptical people How do we get others to engage in your cause This and so much more you’ll learn in this incredible conversation with Mark! Links & Resources A Wider Circle – the amazing organization that will end poverty. If you live outside of the D.C. area please Google “poverty / community service / volunteering to find an organization that needs you in your region The Alchemist, Paolo Coelho – one of Mark’s favorite books (and mine) American University Sociology Program – Mark refers to it in his interview, if you’re fascinated please check it out! About Mark Bergel Dr. Bergel founded A Wider Circle in 2001 and has emerged as a leader in the movement to end poverty. He is a nationally acclaimed speaker in the fields of poverty, health, and social connection and has been featured on national television and radio programs. Mark earned a B.A. from Northwestern University and went on to receive both Masters and Doctoral degrees from American University. In 2014, Mark was selected as a CNN Hero, bringing much-needed attention to the movement to end poverty in our nation. The result of this honor has been to bring many more people from across the country to our efforts - and to help us answer the call to help our neighbors in need. Mark has also been voted one of People Magazine and Major League Baseball's "All Stars Among Us" and he has received the Dr. Augustus White III Award for Civic Engagement and Service, the Andrea Jolly President's Award, the Essence of Leadership Award at the Greater DC Cares Business and Nonprofit Philanthropy Summit, and the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region's Linowes Leadership Award.
Today's episode is a solo round featuring this essay I wrote about Heroism: Be Your Own Hero Have we lost sight of what it means to be a hero in the modern age? Do we even need heroes anymore? The native american culture portrayed in the book 'Black Elk Speaks' was heavily focused on bravery. We are as removed from that culture as from the culture of chivalry that the knights of the round table were known for. What we do have instead an inventive spirit and the belief that we can become what we set out to become (Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness!) Heroes are now innovators, entertainers, teachers, creators, and healers among others. Because we as modern humans have climbed to the top Maslov’s hierarchy of needs, our battle is no longer physical, but rather who we can be for ourselves and others. We have the opportunity re-invent the definition of the hero for the modern human. The experience of becoming a hero is the essence of our humanity. Joseph Campbell saw that the same mythological tales are found in every culture - the story of an adventurer who answers the call to a great challenge, faces down his demons and comes back to society as a changed individual. So, how can you be a hero? *** Find your Cause The hero is called into action for many reasons - to defend their country, to save his family, to provide some service to a group of people. The greatest athletes have been found to be driven by a belief in something greater - it is usually either god or their own abilities. Stephanie Burns of ChicCEO once told me in an interview about ‘Unreasonable Requests' that she found it easy to ask for huge things such as $10,000 of free event space when she was doing it in service of her favorite charity. My own cause that allows me to put for a great effort is to enable people to unlock their fullest human potential by changing the story about themselves (Hero-ification), so that they may contribute to the world in a way that fulfills them and gives them purpose. Determine your Noble Principles Ben Franklin was known for his 10 virtues which he attempted to embody every day. He would track this by putting an X each night next to the ones he was able to fulfill for the day. While many religions give us a series of commandments or qualities to live up to, it is up to us to come up with our own virtues and code of conduct based on what is most important to us. What do you admire in other people? How do you want to feel? What way of being would make you proud of yourself? These are some questions to guide you in making your list. As an example, I have declared the theme for 2016 as ‘the year of living boldly’, so in addition to my other values, I will filter action through the lens “is this action big and bold enough?" Take Courageous Action What are you not satisfied with in your life? What problems do you see in the world? What do people need from you? What do you find yourself thinking about over and over? You Epic Adventure will keep calling and calling, and it is up to you to answer the call and embark on your quest. Heroes are know for their actions and feats, which are impossible to achieve without taking the first step. In the middle of your journey, you will face challenge that is much greater than you anticipated (10 times harder, according to my calculations) and will take all your effort or concentration. In addition, it takes courage to start a new quest, especially when one has little or no experience. Bravery in the face of the unknown defines the hero. Paolo Coelho tells us that making decisions is our god given right as humans and we must embrace this power. Taking action is heroic because by saying yes you are also closing the door on other options because you believe you are fighting the good fight. In my own quest to go to all 50 US states before I turned 30 or become a professional cyclist, I was saying no to regular weekends at the lake with friends.
On August 9 Jim, Pat, Tuna and Kent presented the story of the "Two Vessels" by Paolo Coelho. The old and leaky bucket never realized how valued he was. Blanca Rodriguez presented the sermon on the "healing touch" of compassion and understanding. Abby Fleming provided the music.
