If you've been listening to the Authenticity Road Podcast over the last two seasons, you know that Jordan and I both came to this work via EVRYMAN and the somatic method they teach. For some time, though, I've been considering that there's more than one way for men to pursue their personal and emotional development. With that in mind, we're kicking off our third season of the show—our 51st episode—with a guest whose name may be familiar to many in the world of men's work: Boysen Hodgson. Boysen is a dedicated husband and dad. He's a fiercely optimistic advocate for men's transformation. And—if you've seen his name in your inbox—it's likely as a result of his role as Communications Director for the ManKind Project USA. I will own that I entered our conversation with a bias and more than a few preconceived notions about the ManKind Project, what they stand for, and how they do the work. I was delighted to have my views challenged and to learn quite a lot about this longstanding and impactful organization. Whether or not you're familiar with ManKind Project, you'll no doubt find much to think about in what Boysen has to say. So let's get on the road!About BoysenBoysen Hodgson is the Communications Director for the ManKind Project USA, a nonprofit organization hosting transformational programs and supporting men's groups serving over 10,000 men every week. He's the co-creator of the ManKind Podcast, a show that invites listeners to expand their perspectives on manhood, and he's the author of “The New Macho,” a credo for emotionally mature masculinity. Join me, Boysen Hodgson, while I talk with Sean Harvey, founder of Warrior Compassion Men's Studio and author of the new book, "Warrior Compassion, Unleashing the Healing Power of Men." In this enlightening conversation, we discuss his transformative journey from Wall Street to Eileen Fisher, and his vital work in men's healing with men in highly 'masculine' environments. Listen in as Sean shares about his inspiring TEDx talk 'Compassion Makes the Warrior' and his award-winning efforts in conflict resolution and healing. We examine the urgent need to define masculinity with more humanity, address the epidemic of isolation, and the crucial importance of compassion and connection in men's healing. Sean helps us unpack four primary obstacles that prevent men from connecting to their shared humanity - objectification, othering, fear of emasculation, and de-identification. In the latter part of our conversation, we take a closer look at spirituality and how simplicity can offer the most profound insights. We also discuss the value of personal transformation in helping us reconnect to our shared humanity and bridging the gap between opposing views. Wrapping up, we explore the impact of connecting with others on LinkedIn, and Sean shares how this platform can support our personal and professional growth. Last weekend I was in Connecticut to staff the New Warrior Training Adventure weekend, a weekend-long rite of passage for men from the ManKind Project. This was the first NWTA in New England in three years, thanks to Covid. I was supposed to staff the weekend last October, but all the NWTAs across the US were halted due to charges of cultural appropriation. The charges of cultural appropriation were from a group of Native American elders called Spirit. I'm not going to rehash everything here. Visit the blog post for this episode at RealMenFeel.org, and I'll have links to every article and video I mention. When I discovered that all NWTAs were canceled, I was shocked, disappointed, and hurt. My NWTA was back in October 2016. There was a lot of Native American ritual and ceremony, and it was presented respectfully, honoring where they came from and giving full acknowledgment. It was stressed how much training ManKindProject (MKP) men had with the Lakota people to learn what we would be doing. There were months of negotiation between the ManKind Project and indigenous leaders. I didn't know when or if NWTAs would return, and I feared a watered-down weekend with no impact. I don't agree with all the things MKP let go of doing, but I also wasn't part of the process and have not had any interaction with the Native Americans who were upset. I do appreciate MKP's attempt to have integrity around the intended and unintended consequences of their training. When the NWTAs were rescheduled, I didn't sign up to staff. I had no idea what the changes were and if I was on board with making any, but as I had previously stepped forward, I was asked to join this staff. I decided to do so because I wanted to experience this updated version of the weekend and see if it was still as powerful and was something I could recommend. I intentionally did not promote or invite anyone to last weekend's training. Real Men Feel's history with the Mankind Project goes back a long way. The ManKind Project, with Boysen Hodgson, Episode 26, September 6, 2016 New Warrior Training Adventure Weekend Report, Episode 32, October 24, 2016 I've also had many guests who've done the NWTA and are part of MKP. Sometimes that was part of the show, and sometimes it was something I learned afterward. Back to last weekend, I staffed my first NWTA since 2017, and I did so because I wanted to fall in love with the weekend again. I wanted to find that despite any changes, regardless of my opinion about them, this is still a powerful, potent weekend that I can recommend to men. It is. I was flying high for days knowing there were 25 new men in the world. Men with vision, meaning, and mission. Men who have grown, healed, and reclaimed their Gold. I wanted to staff this New Warrior Training Adventure weekend to see if it was still something I could heartily recommend to men. YES Do it. Don't look for details about what happens. All of my videos are safe because I share my experiences without sharing details of what is done. You will go on a hero's journey - let that be enough of a description. If you've done the weekend, I highly recommend staffing it. You'll get wins and insights at another level. Make new friends and perhaps reconnect with old ones. Visit NewWarriorTrainingAdventure.com, and you'll get a list of upcoming weekend events around the globe. Pick one, and register. This is Boysen Hodgson, co-host of the ManKind Podcast, today with a conversation about death and dying, with my dear friend, Michael Russer. Now Michael has been on the podcast before. As per a CBS news poll, 70% of the public believe that we are incapable of solving problems because we are so DIVIDED. So what does that mean for us as a species? Imminent doom?Well, I sat down recently for a panel discussion on our show The ManKind Podcast to clarify if and how it might be possible to begin the healing process.Key takeaways from this episode: Many today have found their identity based on what they are AGAINST instead of what they are FOR. A social phenomenon called Schismogenesis. In the past, we were more likely to disagree without the need to dehumanize the other person and consider them "Evil" simply because we disagreed with their views and opinions. My triggers are often the key to discovering how I can do my healing in relation to how those I can't entirely agree with fire me up.That "Bridge Building" isn't about finding "Common ground" with those we disagree with. It's about being able to disagree and debate in a healthy way that doesn't villainize the other. If you are committed to healing divides, then you must be willing to change your opinion/stance on that which you are debating.Follow Benjamin DancerWebsite: https://www.benjamindancer.com/Blog - Embracing My Triggers: https://www.benjamindancer.com/the-old-man/2022/8/5/embracing-my-triggersFollow Jordan BowmanJordan's Website: https://jbowman.org/journeymenJourneymen Triangle: https://journeymentriangle.org/Additional ResourcesSubscribe/Rate/Review ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐: >>>HERE
WHAT WILL THE AUDIENCE LEARN?Listeners will be more equipped to recognize the connections between hyper-masculinity and the perpetuation of racism. Men will be able to notice the ways hyper-masculine socialization affects their own lives, learn to better care for themselves emotionally, and be part of the solution towards dismantling these suffocating systems.EPISODE SUMMARY:Oppressive constructs such as white supremacy, patriarchy, and heteronormativity can seem independent, however, they work in tandem every day. The generalized qualifications of masculinity and femininity that are systematically asserted throughout our lives serve white supremacy and the oppression/suppression of all people. After Part 1, the lively discussion continued off-screen. This episode is for you if you're striving to understand the ‘System' that is YOU in the world - and trying to have some fun in the paradox of becoming. Listen in. This episode will give you some keys to processing difficult situations by harnessing the Angel parts of you that want to thrive, and working with the Traitor parts of you that are just trying to survive. We recorded this before the recent series of mass shootings in the US. I hope that this discussion will help you, as it has helped me, be in the deep sadness, fear and despair that's present … and care for the reality of the world … AND … to find an Angel voice within you that can support you to act with love and determination in the face of unspeakable horror. Boysen Hodgson is the communications director for The Mankind Project. It provides weekend initiations and support groups for thousands of men in 25 countries. This is what I asked him: 1. As a boy, what and how did you learn about becoming a man? Young men tell me it's mostly don't be a …… Men's movement leaders emphasize the harm of father absence. 2. Your education and career path. Why are more women in college than men except in Sub-Saharan Africa? 3. How you got involved in the Mankind Project. Its influence on your marriage and parenting? Why do women initiate 70% of divorces in the US? Men tell me they feel women have an advantage in emotional communication. 4. History: Based on the mythopoetic or New Age men's movement of the early '80, unconsciously the 3 founders (Bill Kauth, Ron Hering, and Rich Tosi) created an initiation ceremony in 1985 Wisconsin. They drew on Native American traditions and Joseph Campbell's hero's journey: descent, ordeal (explain), and return. How is this different for men than women? Bill Kauth said he wanted an alternative to the “soft masculine,” a “sense of ferocity, hard masculine.” Explain. How does dancing fit? Seems to emphasize doing service and accountability, and provide support groups. 5. The 4 components of the Mankind Project: New Warrior Training Adventure weekend initiation (one-to-one staff) over 60,000 men—update from 23 countries. Gateway New Warrior Training Adventure—which most participants? What's RAW? Integration i-groups with a series of rounds (1000 groups, peer-facilitated) Training to staff the above. Who is the average participant? Evaluations? 6. Despite the hazards of being male, why isn't there a larger and more politically active men's movement? “Movements fail because of the lack of mature bonding, the kind of connection that allows groups to overcome personal and psychological blocks and resolve interpersonal conflicts in a way that is energizing rather than draining to their efforts.”
Where are we in 2021 on definitions of masculinity? Is there any difference between how men and women 'do' emotional release? Today I'm talking with Boysen Hodgson from the Mankind Project, an international men's community. They train men to be vulnerable, self-empathic and self-reflective. They're normalizing the emotionally intelligent man. We cover everything from 80s movies to women's reactions to men who 'overshare.' This is for anyone who has a man in their life - brother, son, father, partner, friend. It's a conversation that's so overdue, and we're having it! Enjoy. SHOW NOTES:Mankind Project - check out their trainings & men's groups Brene don't hate me if you're listening! We never circled back to the "Brene Brown thing," which was a reference to her research about women complaining that the men in their lives crossed a threshold with emotional release, and it can permanently change the dynamic of their relationship. This comes from the On Being episode "The Courage to be Vulnerable." Which - zero exaggeration - I've listened to over 100 times.
For generations, our culture has taught us a narrow and limiting set of rules for how to be a man. The end result? Epidemic levels of isolation for boys and men and embedded repression and violence for the vast majority of women and children. As a boy and young man, I learned that same set of rules and I adopted that stoic, suppressed, and sometimes emotionally violent version of manhood. It took me years to find a way back to the real authentic version of myself that is open, loving, curious, vulnerable, bold, and creative. What if there were ways… paths… programs… groups… a movement, that helped men break out of the Man Box, find their authentic selves, and become happier, less destructive, and more constructive? This episode is about just those paths, those groups and that movementt. This week on the HERE.together Podcast we are releasing, in full, another of the early episodes of the Remaking Manhood Podcast which I co-host and co-produce with Mark Greene. In this episode, we interview Boysen Hodgson, the Communications Director for the ManKind Project USA. For the last 35 years, ManKind Project has been providing intensive weekend retreats and long-term peer support groups for men all over the world. In this conversation, Boysen quickly sets the bar for vulnerability, insight, and truth. Mark and I also end up sharing our deep backstories about how we created our old, mistaken assumptions about ourselves and the world. Mark explains how those old bad stories cause many men to either self-sabotage or lash out. All three of us men share our experience with the work it took us to become a man of connection, accountability and purpose. For all of us, men's work is an ongoing process and one that constantly reveals new ways of seeing and being. Boysen's own knowledge of men's work, both as a leader and as a man is a powerful resource for all the men in our community. I end up surprised by a couple of new ideas that come from the conversation and by some insight that comes bubbling up out of me at Boyson's invitation. I'm really pleased, and a little nervous to share this episode with you, but here we go. The ManKind Project Presents: The New Warrior Training Adventure Click here to sign up for The New Warrior Training Adventure The New Warrior Training Adventure: A life-changing 48-hour experience brought to you by the ManKind Project, an international nonprofit organization. The New Warrior Training Adventure is a challenging real-time hero's journey. It's safe, supportive and cutting edge. It is not a retreat, a conference or a workshop. It is unlike anything you've done before. Many men say that this experience is a turning point in their lives, an event that marks the beginning of a new way of being in the world. It is a singular type of life-affirming event, honoring the best in what men have to offer the planet. We are only able to recognize the powerful brilliance of men because we are willing to look at, and take full responsibility for, the pain we are also capable of creating ... and suffering. This is the paradox of modern masculinity, and it is a lesson we are dedicated to learning and teaching. The New Warrior Training Adventure is a modern male initiation and self-examination. We believe that this is crucial to the development of a healthy and mature male self, no matter how old a man is. It is the "hero's journey" of classical literature and myth that has nearly disappeared in modern culture. We ask men to stop living vicariously through movies, television, addictions, and distractions and step up into their own adventure - in real time and surrounded by other men. What we practice at The New Warrior Training Adventure and why: Emotional Authenticity - Because we believe in honesty and wholeness ... we practice emotional intelligence and self-awareness. Personal Responsibility - Because we value integrity and accountability ... we take 100% responsibility for our feelings, and we own the impacts - both positive and negative - of our choices and actions. Leadership Mastery - Because we believe that role models change lives ... we practice highly principled personal, interpersonal, and group leadership. Empowered Mission - Because we value generosity, service, and connection to spirit ... we explore and live from our deepest purpose. Supportive Community - Because we care for ourselves and the generations to come ... we create a place for men from all walks of life to learn and teach in a safe, respectful, challenging, and inclusive peer-network. "We need emotional expression, vulnerability, and softness in men. We need men as nurturers. What is a farmer if not a nurturer? We need that in our world today." - Boysen Hodgson Listen To Episode 258 As Boysen Hodgson Uncovers: The ManKind's mission as a non-profit and the work they do which includes men's groups all over the US, over 150 global training programs, and The New Warrior Training Adventure. Some of his top influences including David Deida and authors of King, Warrior, Magician, Lover: Rediscovering the Archetypes of the Mature Masculine, Robert Moore and Douglas Gillette. Why more than ever we need to teach men that they can express their emotions, be vulnerable, and more nurturing. The narrative and division we see in the media focusing on "toxic" femininity and masculinity. Where the phrase, "toxic" masculinity comes from as a counterpoint to "deep" masculinity. "Toxic" masculinity compared to "toxic" femininity in a world of disconnection and the wave of the feminist movement. How today's modern world is affecting men in the workplace, at home, and higher rates of depression and suicide. Epigenetics and long legacies of trauma that has been inflicted on portions of our society. The powerful practices of moving, zen, and sitting meditation. How they use various archetypes to embody different energies during their Men's Work at MKP. Why the archetype, Sovereignty, is so important for both the masculine and the feminine. The power of purpose and how it and the sovereign energy directly impact your life. Where he was at in his purpose, thoughts, and relationships during his 20s vs. now as a husband, father, and part of MKP's mission. Lessons he learned from observing his father's relationships, his own unhealthy relationship, and processing all of that before he could let go and become his own purpose. How men and women can process and connect together and alone through safe spaces. How men can support each other to heal from their past traumas, come to their whole masculine and feminine selves, and realign with women who've also done the work. How "pink collar jobs" such as teaching have created a divide between men and women as far as what careers are acceptable for each gender. How doing men's work has helped him tap into his himself and his inner Golden Child to help the relationship he has with his children grow. Power Quotes From The Show "As a society, we have to slow down, be present, and get quiet. It's only in that quiet that I can hear my soul or that I can create the possibility to hear yours." - Boysen Hodgson "We have launched a campaign, #IAmResponsible, in response to #MeToo. It's not about, 'Hey, Brother - I'm responsible for your actions' but 'I'm 100% responsible for my actions, for creating the type of culture that I want to live in, and for what masculinity looks like today." - Boysen Hodgson "At men's group, 'breathe' is probably the first and most powerful incantation that I can do with a man doing a piece of emotional process work. Where are you breathing, how are you breathing into your body, where do I see you inhabiting breath into your body? When you stop breathing, that tells me something about what you're going through." - Boysen Hodgson "Both men and women whether individually or in groups, let's trust each other enough to let us do that work. Society has changed and we're not going backward. What the world needs from us as men is different than what the world needed from us then. Let's move toward the evolution of creating beautiful hearts that want to be connected, loved, shared, and protected." - Boysen Hodgson "The environment has to be painful enough to motivate a man enough to take action. Men will have a sense in their gut that it's time to do something. So, what we can all do as men is to create and hold a space for when you see a man in your life who you know is experiencing that." - Boysen Hodgson "Men will show up. Men are hungry to be healthy influences and role models. We can fix our community by showing up as men. Through #IAmResponsible, we're stating that we are 100% responsible for our actions, for creating the type of culture that we want to live in, and for what masculinity looks like today." - Boysen Hodgson Links From Today's Show Boysen Hodgson Facebook Twitter LinkedIn The ManKindProject Facebook Twitter Instagram YouTube The New Warrior Training Adventure The New Macho by Boysen Hodgson #IAmResponsible Campaign David Deida King, Warrior, Magician, Lover: Rediscovering the Archetypes of the Mature Masculine by Robert Moore and Douglas Gillette Dr. Robert Augustus Masters Iron John by Robert Bly The Art of Charm Podcast Dr. Shepherd Bliss The End of Men by Hanna Rosin We Believe: The Best Men Can Be | Gillette (Short Film) Integral Meditation by Ken Wilbur Planet on Purpose by Brandon Peele Amber Ward of Life UnLtd The M21 Guide from Wellness Force WFR 149 Johnny Blackburn About Boysen Hodgson Boysen Hodgson is the author of ‘The New Macho,’ a credo for the mature masculine. Casey is a highly sensitive, intuitive, empathic, feminist, psychic male. We dig into the implications of these identities, including how our culture limits men's ability to embrace their highly sensitive characteristics. Casey walks us through his awakening to his lunar or feminine side, which has been a decade-long discovery. Casey talks about how he loves the dichotomy of doing construction work and healing work, and how he uses his intuition to help him in both worlds. Casey and I dig into the meta-questions surrounding how to make this world more equitable and just among the genders, and - surprise - don't always agree with each other. Listen in as we have a heartfelt and compassionate conversation about these difficult issues. Marketing & Communications Director of the Mankind Project, USA / A modern Male Initiation
In this episode of the Better Human Show, I talk with Boysen Hodgson, communications director of the Mankind Project. A lot of us have heard of the Mankind Project, but don't really know what they do besides share some heartwarming & feel good content on social media, where they have about a million fans on Facebook. We talk about mythopoetic rituals and how to develop deeper, more meaningful relationships. The ManKind Project flies in the face of rigid stereotypes about the "Sensitive New Age Man" AND the "Macho Man". The mankind projects asks men to go right up to the edge - and beyond - in a culture that seems to be comfortable with mediocrity and passivity from men. They ask men to stop living a vicarious adventure through their TV's and step into a real time adventure to win back their passion for life. They ask men to confront the real issues, to get 100% honest about who they are. Some men have a really hard time doing that. Many did too, but took the risk anyway. And we'll talk about how life changes for men who begin to approach life differently after experiencing the New Warrior Training Adventure. This conversation goes deep, and caused me to re-evaluate some long held beliefs. [Listen on iTunes] BOYSEN HOGDSON is the Marketing & Communications Director for The Mankind Project USA. He works with a small team of staff and volunteers to create marketing materials, strategies, and programs to support the work of the ManKind Project in mentoring men through the passages in their lives. In this episode we discuss: His mentor, Ray, who unified eighteen 1 room schoolhouses to form the very first elementary school system. Letting ourselves be truly seen by other men. The power and freedom of men healing themselves. Being a father. Quotes from this episode: "The work that I do now with MKP is creating more men (like Ray Sant) to inspire others to see way bigger than they thought they could. I help men heal the parts of themselves that need to be healed in order to see themselves in a bigger context." "I learned I was capable of expressing myself in a way that I didn’t think was possible. If I let that rage out it would consume me. If I let that grief be visible to the men around me it would consume me. I think that I’m not unique." "I learned that I could tell the truth in relationship and that I wouldn’t be rejected, even the parts of myself i thought were so ugly and horrible could be held."
