¡Tras el grandioso éxito de “coches que me asustaron” ahora llega la segunda entrega “coches que me decepcionaron”! Bromas aparte me comprometo a una cosa: Estoy seguro que esta lista os va a sorprender más… algunos coches no os lo esperáis, pero… ¡tengo argumentos! Y, por cierto, que en este vídeo tenemos invitado de lujo: Nuestro especialista de cabecera, Jaime Sánchez y su “consultorio clásico” … no os lo perdáis. De vuelta a nuestra lista me he centrado en modelos que me decepcionaron especialmente por sus por sus prestaciones o su mecánica… habrá más oportunidades para otros casos. Y sobre todo en los años 80 y 90 que es mi etapa más intensa como probador. Nunca he dejado de probar coches, pero en estos años, creedme, los probaba todos y muy a fondo. Vaya por delante una advertencia: Los coches que aparecen en esta lista no es que sean malos… ¡ni muchos menos! Aunque algunos no eran de lo mejor en su momento. Simplemente me decepcionaron por diversos motivos que, por supuesto, os contaré. En ocasiones ha sido culpa mía, que esperaba demasiado de ellos. Siempre, antes de probar un coche, me “empapo” de sus características técnicas y datos oficiales. Confieso que tenía mi “sistema”: Nunca leía pruebas de otros antes de escribir la mía. Es cierto, y perdonar esta inmodestia, que en el grupo editorial donde estaba y gracias al esfuerzo de todos nadie, pero nadie, ningún periodista, probaba un coche en España antes que nosotros. Pero sí alguno en el extranjero. Los franceses probaban antes que nosotros los coches franceses, los italianos los fabricados en Italia y los alemanes, los “Made in Germany” … y como nosotros no teníamos industria propia nunca éramos los primeros… ni con Seat. Esto de no leer nada del coche que iba aprobar lo sigo haciendo ahora en todo lo que escribo. Sí, busco datos e informaciones, pero nunca algo que pueda ser parecido a lo que voy a contar… ¿Por qué? Porque soy de la opinión que, incluso aunque no quieras, te “contaminas”. A veces me pasa que después sí lo leo u oigo y pienso que me he equivocado… rara vez… o que podía haberlo hecho mejor… esto siempre. Vamos ya a hablar de coches. 1. Porsche 924 (1976). El más antiguo de estos 10+1 y que probé antes de dedicarme profesionalmente a esto… ¡iba a probar mi primer Porsche! … ¿Y qué sucedió? Que me pareció poco para llevar ese nombre. El motor 2 litros de origen Audi-VW daba 125 CV para unos 1.100 kg… 2. Ford Scorpio 2.8 (1985). Este ya lo probe como profesional. Conocía la versión 2.0 del Scorpio, que iba bien, pero estaba falta de motor, y también conocía el motor 2.8i de Ford, que no daba muchos caballos, pero eran caballos de calidad. Y pensé que la combinación de ambos iba a ser ganadora… pero no. 3. VW Golf 16V (1985). Ya había probado y conocía el Golf MKI con motor de 16 válvulas… y ya sabía que ese motor estaba falto de bajos y que no era desde luego un motor “redondo”. Pero, no sé por qué, esperaba que para el MKII VW hiciese algo… pero no lo hizo. 4. VW Corrado G60 (1989). ¡No me gusta el compresor G! Lo siento, pero es así. La primera vez que probé el motor de 1.781 cm3 con 8 válvulas y compresor G fue en el Corrado… y el coche me gustó, pero el motor no. Y eso que no sabía la de problemas que iba a dar el dichoso compresor. 5. Bugatti EB110 (1991). Sí, corría mucho… pero no era un Bugatti de verdad. Y es que los Bugatti originales eran coches ligeros y relativamente simples dentro de su sofisticación. Y este EB110, que se llama así porque se presentó 110 años después del nacimiento de Ettore, no era nada de eso. 6. Renault Clio 16V (1991). Una sucesión verdaderamente difícil, la del Supercinco GT Turbo. Se puede decir que el Clio 16V era mejor en todo… menos en sensaciones y en prestaciones… nada menos. Luego vino el Williams y lo arreglo todo. 7. Audi Coupé 2.2 16V (1991). Me refiero a la generación denominada B3 aparecida en 1989. Pero la versión concreta de la que os hablo apareció en 1991. El primero que probé era el 2.2 de 5 cilindros y 20 válvulas. Si hacéis números, era el motor del VW Golf 16 válvulas multiplicado por 0,25. No, no se subía la cilindrada, sino que se añadía un cilindro más. No era tan decepcionante como el motor del Golf… lo era más. 8. Toyota Celica GT-Four “Carlos Sainz” (1992). ¡El coche de Carlos Sainz! ¡Hasta con su firma! Pero no corría nada. Sí, anunciaba 208 CV y un buen par entre las 3.200 y las 4.800 rpm… todo eso sobre el papel. Pero no sé si por el sistema de tracción total, por las normas anti polución o por el peso de 1.500 kg, la sensación que tenías era que el coche no corría. Sobre todo, si te bajabas de un Ford Escort Cosworth o de un Lancia Delta Integrale… no solo era una sensación. Las cifras de prestaciones demostraban que era una realidad. 9. Ferrari F50 (1995). 10 años después que el F40, el F50 ofrecía 42 CV más, un motor que requería subir mucho de vueltas y un peso mucho mayor. Y en cuanto a estética el F50 no es feo, pero parce como “blandito” comparado al F40. Resultado, me decepciono. Pero no debí ser el único decepcionado, porque solo se hicieron 349. 10. Lotus Elise (1996). El coche era bonito, pequeño con 3,72 m de longitud y 1,20 m de altura y con un peso de apenas 800 kg. Pero el motor era un 1,8 litros con 120 CV… De nuevo recurro a mi madre, con una frase suya: “Mucho pan para tan poco queso”. Bonus Track: Mazda RX8 (2003). Y el motor ofrecía 231 CV que había que ir a buscarlos a las 8.500 rpm. Lo he probado en circuito y el coche es divertido, tienes que ir siempre con el motor por encima de las 6.000 rpm. Pero en el día a día, es un engorro, si vas tranquilo, vas lento, y si quieres ir con cierto dinamismo, requiere una conducción casi “al ataque”… Conclusión. Una pregunta, ¿os ha sorprendido alguno de estos coches? Estoy seguro de que sí. Insisto, para nada son malos, no me importaría nada tener muchos de ellos, pero en su momento me defraudaron porque esperaba más. De hecho, muchos de ellos, como los VW Golf y Corrado, el Audi, el Lotus o el Scorpio, tuvieron motorizaciones más acordes con el modelo.

Los nombres y escudos de las marcas, en algunos casos, encierran nombres y significados curiosos. Hay marcas cuyos logos son sencillamente el propio nombre o la inicial del nombre… pero a mí me gustan más aquellas marcas con logos más “currados” que expresan, a veces incluso ocultan, otros significados. Os vamos a contar la historia del nombre y el escudo o logo de 20 marcas… en algunos casos el nombre tiene poca historia: Es sencillamente el apellido de su fundador. En los nombres hay unas cuantas historias curiosas, pero la de los emblemas, escudos o logos, o como queráis llamarlos, son todas interesantes, y curiosas… Audi. Una marca alemana con nombre latino. Alfa Romeo. Uno de los escudos más bonitos, sin duda. Aston Martin. En este caso esas alas representan sencillamente la velocidad. BMW. No, el logo o escudo de BMW no representa una hélice en movimiento. Citroën. Los famosos dos “chevrones” no provienen del mundo militar, como he llegado a oír. Jaguar. SS fue una marca de coches británica que lanzó el SS Jaguar 100, al que todo el mundo llamó simplemente jaguar. Mercedes-Benz. El emblema es cosa del señor Daimler que diseño esta estrella de 3 puntas que simbolizan tierra, mar y aire. Ferrari. Otra de las marcas cuyo nombre, como tantas otras, es el apellido de su fundador. Lamborghini. Ferruccio nació el 28 de abril de 1916 y su signo zodiacal era Tauro. Maserati. Marca fundada en 1914 por los hermanos Alfieri, Ettore, Ernesto y Bindo Maserati. Mazda. Con nombre de dios, en concreto de Ahura Mazda. Opel. El emblema procede de un exitoso camión de los años 30 llamado “Blitz”, en alemán relámpago. Y la idea del rayo gusto. Peugeot. Lo de Peugeot tiene poco misterio: EL fundador de la marca se llamaba Armand Peugeot. Porsche. Otra marca cuyo nombre es el apellido del fundador, pero con un escudo bonito y complicado donde aparece un “cavallino rampante”. Renault. Otros originales en cuanto al nombre fueron los hermanos Renault, Louis, Marcel y Fernand. Rolls-Royce. La historia del nombre no tiene mucha “miga” pero la de su emblema, una estatuilla además del propio logo, es todo un culebrón de amor, pasión e infidelidad. Škoda. Emil creó una marca a la que puso su apellido. Subaru. Subaru es como se llama la constelación de las Pléyades en japones, formada por 6 estrellas. Toyota. El fundador de Toyota se apellidaba Toyoda. Pero decidió cambiarlo por Toyota porque le sonaba mejor. Volvo. Una marca sueca con nombre latino… y es que la cultura romana ha llegado a todos los confines del Mundo.

He is a member of the Stanford Medicine Alliance for Disability Inclusion and Equity and Doctors with Albinism, and actively mentors doctors with disabilities.  Dr Sadaf Khan is a newly fellowed consultant psychiatrist currently working in adult acute mental health at Eastern Health in Victoria. She began her psychiatry training in Ireland and is a proud member of both the Royal College of Psychiatrists of Ireland and the UK. In 2024, she completed her fellowship with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP). In this conversation, Dr Khan shares her personal experiences navigating the complexities of psychiatric training while living with visual impairment. She candidly discusses the obstacles she faced and the innovative strategies she developed to overcome them. Ettore, ladro e rapinatore appena uscito di galera e senza alcuna prospettiva per il futuro, incrocerà la sua strada con quella di Nicola Natalizi, anziano e bizzarro signore dai modi gentili, che sostiene di essere Babbo Natale. Sarà vero? Tra un'avventura e l'altra, Ettore avrà forse anche la possibilità di tornare a credere in una vita felice, recuperando il rapporto con la figlia che non ha mai conosciuto. Pellicola molto leggera che suscita malinconia, se si pensa che è l'ultima apparizione di Gigi Proietti su grande schermo, prima della scomparsa. Un film ingenuo e non sempre perfetto, certo... ma piacevole da vedere nel corso delle feste. Anche Marco Giallini se la cava abbastanza bene. Il finale è un pochino troppo sbrigativo, ma tutto sommato si può anche promuovere.

No podía ser otro número más que este, el que forman el 1 y el 3… Os traigo 12+1 coches en los que fallecieron personajes famosos. Algunos os van a sorprender o el coche o el famoso o las circunstancias. Hay muchas teorías “conspiranoicas”. Seré sincero: Este video va de “coches asesinos” pero lo cierto es que, prácticamente en ningún caso, la culpa fue del coche… 1. 1927. Amilcar: Isadora Duncan. He leído y escuchado en más de una ocasión que la muerte de Isadora fue en un Bugatti. Incluso he leído y escuchado, en este caso de fuentes generalmente bien informadas, como se dice en la tele, que la propia Isadora creía que iba a bordo de un Bugatti. 2. 1939. Bugatti Tipo 57: Jean Bugatti. Voy a ser un poco malo: Con los coches tan bonitos que hacía Bugatti y Jean, el hijo del gran Ettore, fue a perder la vida en uno de los más feos. Si te digo el Tipo 57 a lo mejor no le pones “cara”, pero si te digo el Bugatti Tank, seguro que sí. 3. 1945. Cadillac: General George Patton. Una de las muertes que en algunos casos ha dado lugar a teorías de la conspiración. Con la Alemania Nazi ya vencida Patton viajaba en un Cadillac cuyo modelo exacto no he podido averiguar porque era militar y difícil de reconocer y tuvo un accidente absurdo a baja velocidad en el que el único fallecido fue él. 4. 1955. Porsche 550: James Dean. Aunque la frase no es suya, le va al pelo: “Muere joven y deja un bonito cadáver”. Dicho y ello. En este caso también hay teoría de la conspiración pues su Porsche 550, apodado “Little bastard” estuvo envuelto en más accidentes. 5. 1960. Facel Vega HK500: Albert Camus. Siempre lo digo: La realidad supera a la ficción. Por error la prensa de la época publicó que el ciclista italiano Fausto Coppi había fallecido en accidente de tráfico. En una entrevista el premio Nobel Camus afirmó: “No hay nada más idiota que morir en un accidente de coche”. 6. 1965. Ferrari 250 GT Spider. Porfirio Rubirosa. El bueno de Porfirio era un crack que tuvo relaciones “intimas” e incluso se casó con una colección de estupendas y en algunos casos adineradas mujeres. Tuvo relaciones con Doris Duke, hija del dueño de Camel, con Barbara Hutton, hija del dueño de Woollworth, con Jayne Mansfield, de la que hablaremos más tarde para desgracia de Jayne, con Zsa Zsa Gabor y Eva Perón, entre otras. 7. 1967. Buick Electra Model 66. Jayne Mansfield. Vamos ahora con Jayne Mansfield, heredera de Marylin Monroe a la que se parecía bastante. La rubia Jayne destacaba por sus medidas, de 103/54/91 pero, ¡ojito! también por la medida de su cociente de inteligencia, que era de 163… 8. 1973. BMW 2800: Nino Bravo. En los 70 fallecieron dos de mis ídolos: Evangelina Sobredo Galanes y Luís Manuel Ferri Llopis… que muchos conoceréis por sus nombres artísticos, Cecilia y Nino Bravo. En esos tiempos atender a los “bolos”, a las actuaciones en directo, implicaba viajar por carreteras no muy buenas y, en muchas ocasiones, con prisas. 9. 1982. Rover 3500 de 1972: Grace Kelly. ¡Más teorías conspiranoicas! Por ejemplo, se dijo que en el momento del accidente de Grace conducía su hija Estefanía, que entonces tenía 7 años. Otras teorías dicen que tenía como amante a un mafioso y que iba a reunirse con él. Como de costumbre ninguna de estas teorías, y otras muchas, se han podido demostrar. 10. 1989. Lancia Thema 8.32: Fernando Martin. Otro de mis ídolos, como aficionado y practicante al baloncesto que soy. Era un personaje muy mediático, sobre todo en ese momento cuando su pareja era la archi famosa, en España, Ana Obregón. La prensa de le época se hizo un lío, algunos dijeron que iba en un Ferrari, cuando en realidad conducía un Lancia Thema 8.32, eso sí, con motor Ferrari. 11. 1992. Peugeot 405 Turbo: Juan Gómez, “Juanito”. Juan Gómez, jugador del Real Madrid conocido por todos como “Juanito”, ya retirado, fue a ver un partido de futbol de su equipo. Iba dormido en el coche, un Peugeot 405 Turbo, así que no se enteró de nada. 12. 1997. Mercedes S 280 de 1994: Diana de Gales. Lay “Di” falleció en un accidente de tráfico en el Túnel del Alma en París cuando era perseguida por unos periodistas. Pero también por algunos miembros del cuerpo de espionaje del Reino Unido, el MI6. Además el conductor dio positivo en alcohol. Iba con su novio el hijo del archimillonario árabe Al Fayed. 12+1. 2013. Porsche Carrera GT: Paul Walker. En un año acabado en 12+1 nos dejó un actor muy querido y además de una manera espantosa. Iba acompañado de su compañero en la saga “Fast and Furious”, el también actor Roger Rodas cuando estrellaron su Porsche Carrera GT, que salió ardiendo antes de que sus ocupantes pudiesen ser rescatados…

THE FOUR FOUR-LEGGED ADVENTURERS + ONEOn the outskirts of a big city, there lived four little dogs who took a walk around the neighborhood every day to stretch their legs with their owners. They spent the rest of the time on armchairs or lying in the sun in the garden.In a corner near the wall, behind the house, hidden by a tree, there were some old used and slightly broken objects. One of the dogs, named Tachi, decided to go exploring to see if there was anything interesting and found what seemed to be an old ball — but a bit strange, with a kind of leg."What could it be? It looks like a suspicious object!" she thought. "Better call reinforcements immediately. Woof, woof, woof!"The other three rushed over, barking — just in case there was someone or something to scare off."A ball, a ball!" they shouted and got into position to play.The most mischievous and smallest in size, Pippa, started to kick the object with her little paws but stopped immediately exclaiming, "Oh, but how hard this ball is!""It's hard indeed, silly, can't you see it's a globe?" said Luca and Lillo, the other two members of the family, while Tachi remained thoughtful and not entirely convinced.But once it was clear what it was, they all started to observe it as, magically turning on itself, it showed distant countries they had heard about from their owners who, to tell the truth, were great wanderers!At the end of the day, after many adventures, naps, a walk at sunset, and a good dinner, they all went to bed; but thinking about the globe, none of the four could sleep much. As soon as they closed their eyes, they began to travel with their imagination and thought of exciting adventures that transported them to unknown and fantastic places to visit.In the morning, there was a lot of whispering. "Slept well?" they asked each other. "No, I traveled to unknown countries," "I thought of flying," "I of sailing the oceans," "I climbed very high mountains."Thinking and thinking, they decided it would be really nice to turn these dreams into reality. They continued to chatter, and after a few hours, they all agreed and pronounced the fateful words: "We will be the four four-legged adventurers, traveling the world, all for one and one for all." On the second round, while enjoying the view of the city, an unexpected gust of wind made them spin in the air and fall into the water of the Seine with a splash, a "plop", and then a great movement of paws and a collective barking: "Woof help, woof help, woof help, woof help, save us, we can't swim!”Luckily, a boat was slowly sailing right at that moment in the river. The crew rushed to save them all by throwing the lifeboat and pulling them on board.At the same time as the rescue, a big trouble arose. The sailors were none other than pirate dogs. Black flags with skulls and crossbones waved on the boat.The boatswain arrived on the deck of the ship and, scratching his nose, observed the scene, incredulous and also worried. The boat was on a special mission and carried a large treasure well hidden in the hold. Untie them immediately and offer them bones and croissants at will."The pirate captain, approaching, said: “Oh, don't you recognize me? I am Odi, my owner is a friend of yours." So, Tachi, Pippa, Luca, and Lillo, remembered him. They did somersaults with joy for being saved and for having found a great friend. Addressing the crew, he said, “I lived in their house, across the ocean, hosted by their owners and treated like a king.”Late as a broken clock, the wizard dachshund, like a lightning bolt, arrived on deck ready to fight to defend the four four-legged adventurers, but he could do nothing but breathe a sigh of relief and greeted Odi the Pirate with a paw shake.All happy and content, they spent a few hours of joy admiring Paris from the boat with their pirate friends. In the evening, Ettore the wizard dachshund organized the return trip, which included the pirate captain, Odi.The five four-legged adventurers, once home, across the ocean, stretched out warmly by the fireplace, recounted their fantastic Parisian adventure. Woof, woof, woof, woof, and woof.

I QUATTRO AVVENTURIERI A QUATTRO ZAMPE + UNOAlla periferia di una grande città, abitavano quattro piccoli cani che ogni giorno facevano un giro nel vicinato per sgranchirsi le zampette insieme ai loro padroni. Il resto del tempo lo passavano in poltrona o sdraiati al sole in giardino. In un angolo vicino al muro, dietro la casa, nascosti da un albero, c'erano dei vecchi oggetti usati e un po' rotti. Uno dei cani, quella che si chiamava Tachi, decise di andare in esplorazione per vedere se c'era qualcosa di interessante e trovò quello che sembrava essere un vecchio pallone — ma un po' strano, con una specie di gamba. "Che cosa sarà mai? Sembra un oggetto sospetto!” Meglio chiamare i rinforzi immediatamente, pensò: "Bau, bau, bau!" Gli altri tre accorsero subito abbaiando — in caso ci fosse da spaventare qualcuno o qualcosa. ”Un pallone, un pallone!" gridarono e si misero in posizione per giocare. La più birichina e più piccola di taglia, la Pippa, iniziò a calciare l'oggetto con le sue zampette ma si fermò subito esclamando: ”Oh, ma com'è duro questo pallone?!” “E' duro si, sciocca, non lo vedi che è un mappamondo?" le dissero Luca e Lillo, gli altri due componenti della famigliola, mentre Tachi rimaneva pensierosa e non veramente convinta della cosa.Ma una volta chiarito cosa fosse, tutti si misero ad osservarlo mentre, magicamente girando su se stesso, mostrava paesi lontani dei quali avevano sentito dire dai loro padroni che, per dirla proprio tutta, erano proprio dei gran girelloni! Alla fine della giornata, dopo tante avventure, pisolini, una camminata al calare del sole ed una buone cena, andarono tutti a letto; ma pensando al mappamondo, nessuno dei quattro riuscì a dormire un gran che. Appena chiudevano gli occhi, iniziavano a viaggiare con la fantasia e pensavano ad avventure emozionanti che li trasportavano in posti sconosciuti e fantastici da visitare.Al mattino, c'era un gran bisbigliare. "Dormito bene?" si domandavano gli uni con gli altri. “No, io ho viaggiato in paesi sconosciuti," "Io pensavo di volare," "Io di navigare sugli oceani," “Io invece di scalare montagne altissime." Pensa e ripensa, decisero che sarebbe stato davvero bello trasformare questi sogni in realtà. Continuarono  a parlottare, e dopo qualche ora, tutti d'accordo pronunciarono le fatidiche parole: "Saremo i quattro avventurieri a quattro zampe, a giro per il mondo, tutti per uno e uno per tutti." La decisione fu presa; ma come sarebbe stato possibile iniziare l'avventura? A Luca gli venne in mente il vecchio saggio bassotto Ettore, che viva nel vicinato e che di mestiere faceva il mago cantastorie . Lo incontravano quasi tutti i giorni durante le passeggiate al tramonto. Ettore seduto davanti alla sua casa narrava con occhi scintillanti di emozione storie di viaggi fantastici ad un gruppetto di cuccioli con i loro padroni; tutti intenti ad ascoltare.  Una volta lo sentirono raccontare di Parigi e della sua maestosa Torre Eiffel che si alzava in cielo fino a sopra le nuvole, dei monumenti imponenti, dei grandissimi giardini da visitare e poi, attenzione attenzione, croissant con burro e marmellata per colazione, baguette ripiene di tutto un po' a pranzo ed ossi succulenti e saporiti per cena."Ecco chi ci potrebbe aiutare: Ettore il Bassotto Mago!” esclamarono con gioia.Immediatamente, quatti quatti, uscirono di nascosto dal loro giardino, passarono da un piccolo varco nella staccionata e si incamminarono verso la casa di Ettore. Arrivarono alle le cinque del pomeriggio in punto ed Ettore li invito' per il te con i biscotti. I quattro avventurieri, fra un biscotto e l'altro gli raccontarono del mappamondo trovato per caso, e del loro desiderio di avventure. Il bassotto mago, che tutto aveva già intuito, disse: "Con un incantesimo io posso accompagnarvi in giro intorno alla terra ed andare a visitare una località da voi scelta." I fantastici quattro a quattro zampe, in coro gridarono: "Andiamo a Parigi!" “Con piacere," rispose Ettore. Tutti pronti per la partenza!Il bassotto mago prese il suo super bastone magico, che battuto tre volte per terra "toc toc toc", e alle parole "Babau Babau!" ne uscirono piccole stelle luminose; ognuna prese per la zampetta un cane alzandolo in volo, ed a seguito del mago, partirono per l'avventura.In un primo momento chiusero gli occhi timorosi, ma: "Guardate guardate," disse la loro guida, e aperti gli occhi videro che sorvolavano oceani, mari, montagne, laghi, città e foreste incantate: "Che meraviglia!” Dopo poco, improvvisamente, in lontananza apparve la città di Parigi. Volteggiando come piume al vento, in un soffio arrivarono quasi a toccare la Torre Eiffel, che con la sua altezza, bucava le nuvole passandovi nel mezzo. La compagnia si posò sui tetti di Parigi: “Che meraviglia, Parigi è davvero magica e affascinante!" Mentre passeggiavano per le strade di Montmartre decisero di mandare una cartolina ai loro padroni per fargli sapere del loro viaggio.Indirizzo: Alla nostra casa dall'altra parte del oceano.Terza strada a destra.Nona a sinistra. Giardino con albero di limoni. Scoiattoli che gironzolano intorno. Possibile avvistamento colibrì. Città di chissà chi lo sa, vallo a sapere.Modalità di spedizione: Raggio di luce veloce e magico. Assicurata. Richiesta firma alla consegna. Spedita la cartolina. Videro la famosa ruota panoramica e senza esitazione ci salirono sopra. Al secondo giro, mentre si godevano il panorama della città, una inaspettata folata di vento li fece volteggiare in aria e giù a precipizio nell'acqua della Senna con un tonfo, un "pluff" e poi un grande movimento di zampe e un collettivo abbaiare: "Bau aiuto, bau aiuto, bau aiuto, bau aiuto, salvateci non sappiamo nuotare!” Per fortuna un battello navigava lentamente proprio in quel momento, nelle acque del fiume. Accorse l'equipaggio che li salvò tutti e quattro gettando la scialuppa e tirandoli a bordo. Nello stesso istante del salvataggio, si presentò un grosso guaio. I naviganti non erano altro che cani pirati. Sul battello sventolavano bandiere nere con il teschio e ossa incrociate.Il nostromo arrivò sul ponte della nave e grattandosi il naso osservò la scena incredulo e anche preoccupato. Il battello era in missione speciale e trasportava un ingente tesoro ben nascosto nella stiva. Rimuovendo i suoi occhiali tondi disse: “Oh, ma che siete spie 007?”Nel dubbio i quattro cani furono presi prigionieri e legati alla spalliera di piccole sedie.In quel frastuono, apparve sul ponte il capitano. Indossava una bandana con teschi, cinturone con pistole, spada e stivali, e una benda all'occhio destro, ma non aveva aria minacciosa. Avanzò verso i quattro con passi decisi sul legno scricchiolante del ponte. Fissando i prigionieri, alzò la spada e gridò con autorità alla sua ciurma: "Fermi tutti! Questi quattro cani io li conosco, sono miei amici. Slegateli immediatamente e offrite loro ossi e croissant a volontà."Il capitano pirata avvicinandosi disse: “Oh, ma non mi riconoscete? Io sono Odi, la mia padrona è amica della vostra." Così, Tachi, Pippa, Luca, e Lillo, si ricordarono di lui. Fecero capriole dalla contentezza per essere stati salvati e per aver ritrovato un grande amico. Rivolgendosi all ciurma disse “Io ho vissuto nella loro casa, al di là dell'oceano, ospitato dai loro padroni e trattato come un re”.In ritardo come un'orologio scarico, il mago bassotto, come un fulmine, arrivò sul ponte pronto a dare battaglia per difendere i quattro avventurieri a quattro zampe, ma non poté fare altro che tirare un sospiro di sollievo e salutò Odi il Pirata con una stretta di zampa.Tutti felici e contenti passarono alcune ore di gioia ammirando Parigi dal battello con i loro amici pirati.  Alla sera Ettore il bassotto mago organizzò il viaggio di ritorno che includeva anche il capitano pirata, Odi. I cinque avventurieri a quattro zampe arrivati a casa, dall'altra parte dell'oceano, distesi al caldo accanto al caminetto, raccontarono della loro fantastica avventura parigina.Bau, bau, bau, bau e bau.  

THE FOUR FOUR-LEGGED ADVENTURERS + ONEOn the outskirts of a big city, there lived four little dogs who took a walk around the neighborhood every day to stretch their legs with their owners. It looks like a suspicious object!" she thought. "Better call reinforcements immediately. Woof, woof, woof!"The other three rushed over, barking — just in case there was someone or something to scare off."A ball, a ball!" they shouted and got into position to play.The most mischievous and smallest in size, Pippa, started to kick the object with her little paws but stopped immediately exclaiming, "Oh, but how hard this ball is!""It's hard indeed, silly, can't you see it's a globe?" said Luca and Lillo, the other two members of the family, while Tachi remained thoughtful and not entirely convinced.But once it was clear what it was, they all started to observe it as, magically turning on itself, it showed distant countries they had heard about from their owners who, to tell the truth, were great wanderers!At the end of the day, after many adventures, naps, a walk at sunset, and a good dinner, they all went to bed; but thinking about the globe, none of the four could sleep much. As soon as they closed their eyes, they began to travel with their imagination and thought of exciting adventures that transported them to unknown and fantastic places to visit.In the morning, there was a lot of whispering. "Slept well?" they asked each other. "No, I traveled to unknown countries," "I thought of flying," "I of sailing the oceans," "I climbed very high mountains."Thinking and thinking, they decided it would be really nice to turn these dreams into reality. They continued to chatter, and after a few hours, they all agreed and pronounced the fateful words: "We will be the four four-legged adventurers, traveling the world, all for one and one for all." History is written by the victorious. But do we not also need to hear the story from the other side, from ordinary people caught in the middle of historical upheavals, forced to pick a side, or just try to survive? To those relegated to the footnotes in the history books, or not mentioned at all.This can be said to be the starting point for the novels of Sudanese-Scottish Leila Aboulela and Ethiopian-American Maaza Mengiste, both writing about historical events in their home countries.The backdrop in Aboulela's new novel River Spirit is the dramatic time in the Sudan's history in the late 19th century. In the span of just a few years, the country underwent several occupations, as well as a bloody revolution led by a man claiming to be al-Mahdi (the Islamic Messiah). Through a multitude of voices from different sides of the conflicts, and with the young orphaned girl Akuany as a turning point, Aboulela leads us through a central historical time in the Sudan.A young, poor woman is also central in Maaza Mengiste's The Shadow King, telling the story of 1935 Ethiopia invaded by Mussolini's Italy. Told from as different perspectives as Ethiopia's emperor Haile Selassie, the Italian soldier Ettore and the servant girl Hirut, the novel offers a complex picture of the events. Mengiste has emphasized that she was particularly interested in exploring women's role in the resistance movement.Mengiste was born in Ethiopia, and is currently living in the United States. She has explored Ethiopia's recent history in both her critically acclaimed novels Beneath the Lion's Gaze and The Shadow King, with the latter shortlisted for the prestigious Booker Prize. Mengiste has also made her mark as a photographer and an essayist.Aboulela was born in the Sudan, today she lives in Scottland. She has published a number of award winning novels, short story collections and plays.
